I’m sure it has something to do with Pitt’s academic calendar, but trying to hold a scheduled outside event in Pitsburgh in early- to mid-April is just an invitation for miserable weather.

The annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage seemingly continues the streak of heavy cloud cover, rain and wind. But don’t worry, having at 7pm will make it that much more comfortable.

/pours some bourbon

/sits in front of the computer to watch the feed on ESPN3

/realizes its not even 9am

/shrugs and drinks bourbon

So, good luck to the hearty souls who will go out to Bethel Park tonight. I hope the number of people in the stands outnumbers the combined number of players on the sidelines and people up in the press box.

Some related things.

With spring practices all but done, this will shock everyone but the coaches would like to have more practices.

While the players might be excited to hear that there are no more full-pad, grinding workouts to endure before fall training camp starts in August, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph said he could go for 15 more practices.

“I don’t get a lot of supportive looks when I tell them I wish we could start at [day one] on Thursday, but I wish we could,” Rudolph said.

Chryst even took it a step further.

“I think he’s kind of optimistic,” Chryst said. “I could go for 30 more. Guys are working and they’re starting to get a feel for it. That’s the tough thing about spring, right as you feel like they’re just getting close, you’ve got to stop. But it’s been good.”

Once practices end, the only real contact for the players with the coach will be through the strength and conditioning coach and offseason workouts.

A piece on team leadership — or the lack of it over the last few years — was typical. What struck me was realizing that CB K’Wuan Williams will be a senior this year. That doesn’t seem possible.

One player who I think will rise on the depth chart by the first game will be Ejuan Price.

Ejuan Price continues to be an interesting player for me on defense. He has mixed in a little bit with the first team recently, but usually in a very defined role. They’ll usually remove a defensive end, and put Price in as an extra linebacker/stand-up rush end. This is similar to what he did in Todd Graham’s offense two years ago, and it’ll be interesting to see how Pitt incorporates him into the defense this year.

“He’s able to do a lot of different things,” defensive coordinator Matt House said. “He’s continuing to learn, you know, but he’s a guy that, he likes to run, he likes to play and he likes to tackle, so we can find a place for him.”

Price made am immediate impact in his freshman year, but tailed off. He was injured for all of last season. For all the questions I have regarding Matt House as the DC, I like that he is mixing up the formations and trying to use them with players’ particular strengths. I just think Price will be fully recovered and in much better condition by the time practices start in August.

Looking over who is out for the game.

The following players are OUT of the spring game: CB Cullen Christian (hamstring), CB Brandon Felder (foot), CB Pat Fisher (knee), LB Shane Gordon (neck), OL John Guy (knee), S Jason Hendricks (foot), WR Brandon Ifill (knee), CB Jahmahl Pardner (knee).

Pitt coach Paul Chryst said today that QB Tra’von Chapman and C Artie Rowell are questionable for tomorrow’s game.

As far as having a chance on the depth chart, Christian, Felder and Ifill are probably the most frustrated. Both Christian and Felder are transfers and have not gotten out on the field for quite some time. Missing significant chunks of spring practices just puts them deeper down list. Ifill will be a redshirt junior. He is rapidly running out of time to get any playing time beyond special teams.

That last Spring Game I watched was in 2010 (DW’s last year) when it was broadcast on the NFL Network.

There was all this hype about how talented this new QB we had was. Can’t remember his name for the life of me.

Anyway, I was all excited, had the Beer, Bourbon and Pizza going, invited a few friends over.

And no kidding, everyone commented,

“who’s the lousy kid playing QB for Pitt”

I was kind of embarrassed since the kid could barely complete a pass and it was obvious he had no arm strength at all. (i was thinking to my self, this is the kid they anointed to play QB, what a farce)

Anyway….my memories of the annual Spring Blue/Gold game.

Agree about the WPIAL.

We need to get some skill players from the South, just as Majors & Sherrill did way back when.
Also you need some LB’s & DE’s with speed from the south to cause havoc on defense.

I think recruiting the Midwest is good if you’re in the slow Big 10. We’re not.

Chryst doesn’t need to stage a spring game at a high school to build wpial relations. Yes heinz is too large. Yes a future OCS would help. What about the riverhounds stadium?

My son and daughter know what happened in those showers at Pedo State. They are forbidden from that campus until the Kool Aid drinkers provide a mea culpa and realize Joe Pa was not God and there is more to life than football.

Over the summer, let’s hope these players stay in shape and out of trouble.

I’ve been a PItt man for a long time. After watching the game last night and reflecting on the year, I’m liking our chances for next year to do better than the general masses — in both FP & BB. Why?

It usually takes a season of heartbreak(Witchita State), misery (Notre Dame FB) and controversy (Adams NBA & Shell Transfer) to completely wipe away the thin skinned Pitt fan expectations. When expectations are low, we tend to do better. That’s my logic.

I think FB has a strong year and finishes higher than anyone expects.

I think BB has a strong year and challenges for further than usual.

Both will ultimately fall shorter than we dream, we are still, in fact, Pitt….but nonetheless, I think it’ll be a little better than expect and we will be in the conversation.

8 or 9 wins in FB with another crappy bowl win.
25 wins in BB, ACC final & S16 in Tourney.

As Jack Nicklaus says…”You always want to be in the conversation”

We will be in the conversation.

From Corhhole Stevie’s Wiki page:

Under the leadership of Pedersen, Callahan led the Huskers to a 27-22 record in 4 seasons as Nebraska’s Head Football Coach.

On October 13, 2007, the football team lost its homecoming game 45-14 to Oklahoma State. Two days later, Pederson was fired during a five-minute meeting with chancellor Harvey Perlman. Perlman cited Pederson’s leadership style as his rationale for the change. Six weeks after Pederson’s firing, Callahan was also dismissed.

He should have been dragged into Nordy’s office after the Youngstown State mega loss and been shown out the door.

FYI

we are 30 – 22 in the last 4 seasons.

Including the weakest 2 schedules in Pitt history.

“Neat” article and mostly good postings. Several thoughts: Let’s stop making Tino out to be “He Who Must Not Be Named” (Lord Voldemort.) He was just a college kid who was a below average major college quarterback. He was what we had. I like what is being said about our current crop of quarterbacks and hope the good stuff is true when the real games start. I’m not sure about Maryland’s spring game which may be at a h.s. stadium and they were having some practices at h.s. stadiums. Edsal is reaching out to the local players and coaches here as Chryst is in Western PA. They have been having attendance problems and while they play in their own stadium there is local competition for the football dollar from the Redskins, Ravens and Navy. I don’t think our problem is playing in a nearby off campus stadium. As Dr. Tom says “Just win baby!” It amuses and annoys me that some middle and upper middle class suburban kids think State College is a better and safer place than the city of Pittsburgh while PSU along with WVU is constantly ranked as one of the top party schools based largely on alcohol consumption. Hell it takes us students, alumni and others from 6 or 7 universities and colleges to get the South Side close to State College’s alcohol crazy level and then only after the bar’s close on weekend nights. Also we have responsible University and University police who work together and don’t treat athletes and other student’s with special privileges the way their counterparts do at PSU. Enough ranting. Great women’s b. ball hire. HTP!

The WPIAL can’t provide enough quality players to compete on a national level, even if we got them all which we don’t.

However, it is still the base and is needed to grow the fan base, I know families and friends of former players that still attend regularly.

The games at Gateway and North Hills were well attended. BP was a flop because it is difficult to get there and there is no buzz whatsoever about Pitt Football outside of this and a few other sites. Half the guys are here to complain and wouldn’t attend a game with free tickets and chauffeur service, even when we play Notre Dame.

I was a little miffed at Tony for asking whether I was a shill for Pitt. Mostly because I could do a better job of marketing than they do on their best day.

I just hope that Pitt Football has hit bottom and is starting to climb out of it. I prefer to think they are and be disappointed when they don’t, rather than say they stink and feel self important when they prove me right.

After all, I will be a fan through thick and thin, not just a front runner.

@Frankcan

Are we talking about South Stadium in the Southside ?

Yea that would be great place for the Blue/Gold Game.

You could enjoy all that South Side offers both before and after the game. And it’s very close to campus. That should be an easy sellout.

Comment by EMel 04.13.13 @ 3:59 pm

I also contenc that in addition to being difficult to get to Bethel Park, the fact that the game was on Friday evening instead of Saturday afternoon, when most people have more time on their hands, was also a reason for the low turnout

Comment by wbb 04.13.13 @ 4:15 pm

I wonder if this year PC wanted to ‘fly under the radar’ with the spring game and keep it low profile. perhaps he wants to wait and build the actual team up before pumping up the volume of publicity and public statements on this team?… then it make sense to be at an out of the way south hills stadium on a Friday night?

Comment by Pittscript 04.13.13 @ 5:20 pm

I like that the game was at a H.S. They can practice at Heinz anytime. Pitt is the local team and where our roots are.

I am always positive. Of course losing hurts.

In NCAA BB we seem to play teams that go to the final four.

In FB we sometimes play dumb or simply do not have the talent YET.

Comment by Frank MD 04.13.13 @ 6:40 pm

The Riverhounds stadium sounds almost too easy of an idea if it’s possible in the future.

I like the high school stadium idea in the meantime though.

If we ever get the football program in gear and get 10K, then maybe Heinz.

If we’re only going to have 2K or 3K fans, then why not?

C’mon, I know the South Hills is a bitch, I live there, the only area not to get a parkway or interstate running through it, with one of the bigger populations, but, seriously, did anyone really not go to the game because of the location????

I don’t mean out of towners, I’m talking about those of us that live in Allegheny county and surrounding area.

If the game was in Monroeville, Ross Twp. or Moon, and I really wanted to go, I’d find it.

C’mon.

Now, put Friday night with that, and ya, I may not want to go out to Monroeville or Ross on a Friday night. Poor, very poor.

Comment by Dan 04.13.13 @ 9:55 pm

I did find the game had a lot of bright spots, and look forward to the season and am hoping HCPC is starting to lay a foundation down of hard work and committment.

That can’t be the only thing, HCPC will need to get some horses in the barn and hopefully that will come as hopefully we get better and better.

He has some learning to do with HC’ing and gameday stuff, but, as I’ve always said, every coach, in any sport, should get a couple years to see what they can do.

@Upittbaseball, preachin’ to the choir. Allthough I didn’t like the stadium being torn down, I have come to live with it, and the benefit that the Pete has brought.

My main beef with Smug Smilin’ Steve, has not been a “he tore the stadium down” thing.

It’s been that he didn’t have the foresight for the future of the football team.

That he was banking on a pro stadium, when any college fan from 5 to 95 could pretty much tell you, it has never really worked anywhere.

He’s a visionary??? And Heinz Field was his solution???

I could see it as a solution, for a couple years, while his plan was unfolding.

But, alas, he had no ace up his sleeve, Heinz was his solution.

It can be good, when filled. And, he is the one that said, “we will fill Heinz Field up”.

He said it. Don’t want to hear about excuses either with coaching changes and trouble, and the BE conference, and trying to win to get attendance.

He said it. He hasn’t done it.

Comment by Dan 04.13.13 @ 10:06 pm

**I should have said, no parkway or interstate, in the heart of the area. We got 51, 19 and 88!!!**

Allthough, we do have the Turnpike 43, you can now get from Jefferson to Morgantown or Maryland much quicker!!! LOL

The part, that would have helped traffic and made thing easier, the part from Jefferson in the South Hills to the Squirrel Hill tunnel and Monroeville, has been put on hold indefinitely.

The part, that actually made some sense, has been put on hold, 700 million dollars later.

If you ever need to test drive your muscle car and want to wind it out, I suggest Pa. Tunpike 43, miles and miles of track.

It was going to be the “Parkway South” for South Hills. However, it’s now a road to nowhere.

Except for some South Hills kids that go to Cal U., I’m sure they like it,

but, I digress.

Comment by Dan 04.13.13 @ 10:24 pm

Allthough, as I sit here talking to myself, with my friend, “The Scotch”, I realize there is a parallel between Smug Smilin’ Steve and the politicians who said they’d build the road from RT.68 in W.Va./Maryland area to Monroeville.

They all said, they would do it.

Steve said he would fill Heinz. Politicians said they’d make the road.

Don’t want to hear about the residents got in the way, the EPA laws, zoning, bridges, churches, homes, no, no, no, no, no, no, stop right there.

You said you would build it.

Steve, don’t want to hear about it’s a pro town, there’s so much else to do in a big city, we don’t have the alumni numbers other schools have, no, no, no, no, no, you too, stop right there.

You said you would do it. End of story.

Comment by Dan 04.13.13 @ 10:33 pm

Heinz has ceased to become a selling point. It never was and never will be Pitt’s home.

Comment by TX Panther 04.13.13 @ 10:56 pm

Build a stadium that holds 45k people and put it where the projects are or on their Ed be t to not metal bridge. This isn’t hard. Tell some wealthy alumni they can have their name on it. Total cost 475M. That’s pennies. He is a moron and that would make to much sense.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.14.13 @ 8:24 am

F ing spellcheck. Next to the hot metal bridge on the river.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.14.13 @ 8:26 am

No 45,000 capacity stadium-ever, pulleeze!! That’s rinky-dink. second class and admitting you have given up forever the hope of being anything but an also ran, second class team in major college football.

In addition, the capacity might meet current average attendance expectations but is way too small for the big games. You should always size anything you build for peak-capacity not average capacity.
