Staying Calm

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chas @ 10:49 am

Flying home from Houston today. If we could avoid any more transfers or quitting the team today, that would be great.

On the bright side, at least Mike Rice isn’t/wasn’t Pitt’s basketball coach.

I was thinking the same thing last night…the storm just happened, hopefully the sunshine comes through the clouds. two scholarships opened up, is there anyone in top 50,100 thatpitt b-ball could land. what is the juco situation, is there top juco player that would want to play in the acc. on the football side lets give a fair shot to Bennett, and hopefully pc can put the full court press on for the top rb in the state from wash. shai. but I think its not as bad as it seems, the biggest loss is adams by far. we have no true center and it seems we have to play small. but when u play small u should be athletic, and I don’t see this group being overly athletic

Comment by teezy 04.03.13 @ 11:01 am

Unfortunate events at Pitt but child rape in the showers and coaches abusing players are more tragic and serious.

I’m still going to go to the games.

fyi – Stephens-Howling visiting the Steelers today.

Comment by pghFred 04.03.13 @ 11:27 am

It is all relative. At least we are not Rutgers or Penn State. We don’t have to hang our heads in shame about the recent events. PC did the right thing with Shell. Jamie is not at fault for Adams going pro, or Zeigler transferring either. Stuff happens, but we didn’t do it to ourselves like the aforementioned schools.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 04.03.13 @ 11:49 am

jeff this is true.
but we will be screwed in BB next year are fult
or not no depth no center.
and even with the recruits only 10 men on the team
for next year at this point .

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.03.13 @ 11:56 am

Rutgers

Rice is a despicable character. AD should
be terminated for allowing this situation
to exist.

Comment by JR 04.03.13 @ 12:16 pm

Exactly how is it bad for Pitt that we’re about to have our first lottery pick in 25 years? Obviously, next year will be a challenge on the front line, but JD has been to the tourney 9 outta 10 years — the guy knows how to coach.

And anyone that thinks he should’ve stayed one more year needs only to visit the Greg Oden Wikipedia page. Big men are prone to chronic leg injuries, so it’s imperative to get paid as soon as possible.

Sorry, but we know this was a possibility from day one of his career.

WHHAAA, I want my mommy!

Comment by Dr. Tom 04.03.13 @ 12:46 pm

Sadly, the situation we are in today are mostly due to the blue chip recuits … Adams, Birch and Taylor; none, for different reasons didn’t work out as expected. Bond, Gilbert and possibly one or two other potential recuits who may have shied away are not here because of them.

Maybe both of our programs should mostly recruit and be satisfied with 3 stars.

Comment by wbb 04.03.13 @ 1:54 pm

wbb, I feel the worst about Jaylan Bond, because Birch decieding to come a year early led them taking his scholarship. Gilbert might have decided to stay, if he thought he had any prospects of playing.

Comment by Justinian 04.03.13 @ 2:05 pm

i have a list for you i do not say these players
are any good most are jc players but they are centers who have not signed with any one yet.

joseph uchebo 6 foot 11 chipola jc.
robert ojeah 6 foot 9 tec cc
ajak magot 6 foot 11 az cc
darius lewis 6 foot10 img academy florida
lucas stivrins 6 foot 11 pratt cc
rozell nix 6 foot 11 kingdom prep
jordan robinson 6 foot 8 nc prep school

i am not saying they are any good but there are jc centers out there if dixon wants one this was not the whole list but enough for you to get the point.

Steven Adam’s dad had 18 kids with 5 different women! Just sayin!

Comment by Dan 72 04.03.13 @ 2:28 pm

Maybe Buttgers will hire one of our useless assistant coaches and Dixon will be forced to get someone who can coach & recruit.

I can dream can’t I?

Meanwhile Pitt’s BB program is toast…of course with another 11 rent a wins (I hope) Pitt might get to 20 wins again and everyone can praise the great and powerful Dixon again. Wash, rinse & throw-up…

Comment by Jackagain 04.03.13 @ 2:28 pm

Jackagain….yep, it is all Jamie’s fault that Adams has 17 siblings and a family in dire poverty. You know, not even Rush Limbaugh would want to help the Adams clan. So, $$$ from the NBA is dangled in front of Adams and he is faced with a situation..help the family to eat and have shelter or take nice road trips to see the beautiful campuses at Duke and Virginia…THIS IS ALL JAMIE’S FAULT!
Jackagain..GET A LIFE!!!

Comment by isnore 04.03.13 @ 2:40 pm

On second thought Jacagain you are 100% correct//Jamie stinks because he is not Calipari!!
Rent some academic misfits who will major in learning how to read a digital clock and allow them to run around for a season and shuffle off to the NBA.
….and do the same thing every year..then Jamie would be a GREAT coach, a great recruiter and Pitt would eventually be placed on probation or wore for eliminating All ACADEMIC STANDARDS, but, Jackagain we will have great BB teams..WOWEEE!!

Comment by isnore 04.03.13 @ 2:45 pm

worse..not wore.

Comment by isnore 04.03.13 @ 2:46 pm

Jackagain — are you from West Virginia? That’s a serious question.

Comment by PantherP 04.03.13 @ 2:48 pm

On a serious note, Dixon’s done more with less in the past, so getting back to the tournament next year is not out of the question, though not close to a certainty.

What I wonder about is whether Dixon is capable of coaching up a team that lacks a big true center. We’ve never succeeded without one — ie 2011-2012, which is the only year we’ve been without one in Dixon’s tenure. So what happens now?

(cue the negative nancies: “We’re all gonna die, Pitt is toast, Dixon should be tarred and feathered for not controlling things that no mortal can control but whatever i don’t need to make sense I’m a Pitt fan!!!”)

Comment by PantherP 04.03.13 @ 2:53 pm

Trey Ziegler must be from WV too….I think he read this the other day and cried…

link to crazie-talk.com

But his leaving has nothing to do with Dixon not using him properly. No…..he just stunk is all…or Malcolm Gilbert transferring to powerhouse Fairfield has nothing to do with Dixon.

It’s just a run of coincidental bad luck that players are leaving the program like the Pete is on fire(cough).

Comment by Jackagain 04.03.13 @ 3:07 pm

Trey Zeigler is barely a D1 talent — I’ll bet Duke is ecstatic they didn’t waste a scholarship on him. He can’t shoot, dribble, or play defense. The best thing I can say about him is he was a decent rebounder — that’s it.

When a player leaves a Big East powerhouse to play at Fairfield, does that say more about the coach or the player? If it was an issue with the coach and not a desire to play with his brother, I’m certain Gilbert could of played major college basketball — he just doesn’t have the ambition.

Comment by Denny 04.03.13 @ 3:22 pm

It’s been a busy day and I may have missed someone else posting this but, if I were a member of Steven Adams’ family and I heard about and/or saw Kevin Ware’s horrible injury, I would advise Steven to cash in if possible. He can always come back to Pitt (or University of Phoenix) to get his degree. But, if he is really a lottery pick, he is one bad landing away from losing it all.

My heart and best wishes go out to Kevin Ware. I hope he is able to recover. He may be able to play basketball again in college or at a higher level but, if not, I hope Louisville makes sure he is well prepared for life after college. I know Pitt would.

Comment by Pitt Dad 04.03.13 @ 3:27 pm

If both Ziegler and Gilbert stink then why did Dixon give them scholarships?

As for Gilbert….this from Panther’s Prey:

Dixon was quoted in the Trib after Gilbert left that he knew Gilbert always wanted to go and play with his brother eventually. He said it himself.

The NBA must be really hard up for big men. This kid is such a project that I do not see how he can improve sitting on the bench for a couple years, and question if the team that drafts him will ever get their value. By the time he gets game, he will be off to another team. Hope it is not another Mark Blount case.

Comment by Jimbo 04.03.13 @ 4:15 pm

Starting line-up for next year:
1. Point Guards – Robinson and Newkirk
2. Shooting Guards – Durand Johnson, Cam Wright
3. Small Forward – Patterson, Jones
4. Power Forward – JJ and Mike Jones
5. Center – Zanna ++ need much help here

If we can get a decent center we should be OK. This team however should runand not sure if Jamie will do that.

Comment by JP 04.03.13 @ 4:27 pm

on that list of centers i posted joseph uchebo
was a ncs recruit but did not have the grades

he had high potental but he has been in jc should be ready for dev 1 now

he might not be great but was to go to ncs so he cant be all bad

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.03.13 @ 4:59 pm

Its Mike Young JP, and its No. 5 that is the killer. Jamie needs to bring in a center. Zanna and Patterson were bad down the stretch and I just don’t see them making any big leap in talent next season. Is there any hope that Chris Jones can play the 2? his height would be nice there, and he is reputably a good shooter. We need a center. Zanna’s not the answer. Without a center, at least one who can clog the middle and block shots and rebound, we will NOT be ok.

Comment by bossdaws 04.03.13 @ 5:05 pm

Unless we get a good JUCO or 2, expect walk-on Aron Nwankwo (6’7) who was leading rebounder on Maryland state championship team, to see a lot of action. He was redshirted this year which is unusual for a walk-on

only 210 pounds but he can move real well and played on englands national team.
and has a 3 point shot.

he would be better than nothing and from what i read he sounds like a good player.

Steven Adams///academics. I wonder……Adams made his decision to leave Pitt while visiting New Zealand. Pitt was not in a Spring break or extended holiday….NZ is not exactly a quick turnaround trip…so, was he in academic trouble and already leaving Pitt?

@Jackagain In one breath you’re bad mouthing Dixon for not getting anything out of Ziegler and in the next you’re bad mouthing him for giving Zeigler a scholarship. Which is it? You said yourself Coach K offered him a scholarship.

I’m just saying you seem to be one of those people that would complain about something no matter the situation.

Comment by denny 04.03.13 @ 7:51 pm

Comment by panther94 04.03.13 @ 8:13 pm

Pitt needs 2 centers or else play like Villanova has many times and many other teams….play small with 2 power forwards (no one with their back to the basket).

Pitt didn’t feed Adams inside last year anyway, so why get a true center now who can’t play the position?

You don’t need to be tall to get rebounds…Charles Barkley was 6’6″, Jerome Lane was 6’5″ I believe and Sam Clancy was 6’7″.

@denny. I wasn’t bad mouthing Dixon for bringing in Ziegler….it was other guys here saying he stunk anyway, not me. I said Dixon couldn’t coach him up or use him right.

Comment by Jackagain 04.03.13 @ 8:38 pm

It’s high time Dixon alters the team concept to fit the players instead of what he has been doing, which is pounding a square peg into a round hole. He may need to play small ball and run some, that and press.

Comment by Jackagain 04.03.13 @ 9:35 pm

The Paul Evans years weren’t all bad. In fact those two teams in the late 80?s were better than any of the Howland/Dixon teams.

I love how ppl use Ralph Willard constantly to boost Dixon. As I posted on here before, Willard wasn’t scheduling 12 rent-a-wins to make his record appear great. If those rent-a-wins excite ppl and float your boat. So be it.

From what I see, lots of season ticket holders are no shows for the non-con. Like at least 20-25% of them.

People are starting to see thru the Illusion.

24-9 sounds impressive, but it was really 12-9 and 4-8 against the Top 50.

Also this notion of comparing us to L-Ville, Kentucky, UNC and others who lose one & dones is pretty much nonsensical. Those schools routinely recruit 3 to 4 highly rated (4 &5 star) players EVERY Year. Pitt meanwhile has almost entire recruiting classes that are wiped out by transfers/leavings/whatever and players who just aren’t very good. Whereas those elite programs just reload because they can recruit great, Pitt must scramble just to find some recruits to fill out the class. Comparing Pitt to those programs and their one & dones is ludicrous.

And while the apologists will say, losing Zeigler is no big deal, it is. He was in the system for a year and surely would have been better next year and showed to some extent when he got 20 minutes of playing time he could score as he scored 18 points and led the team in scoring one game in mid Jan and then had 13 points in a game the next week.

At the least he would have provided some depth and experience off the bench and gave you some length at 6’5? at the 2 Guard.

At the most he could have developed into the starter at 2 guard and perhaps avg’d 10-15 ppg.

And I have a feeling next year’s bball team is really going to struggle to score points. Especially in Dixon halfcourt snailball.

Heck Zeigler might have been next year’s leading scorer.

Oh and I think it’s great Kiwi Steve is going to the NBA as I don’t think JD knew how to develop him any farther anyway. It was just a shock since the kid just said the other day he loved it at Pitt and would be back for next season.

I just hope the NBA GM’s don’t screw him on Draft Day like they did with Blair & Young. Who both should have been drafted in the 1rst Round.
Half the players drafted in the 1rst Round that year, never even played in the NBA or don’t now.

I’m thinking there’s a connection between Riley in SLC to observe Adams and his bolting after saying he was returning. He wouldn’t have to score on the Heat, just rebound & defend. In few years when LJ Wade & Bosch age they’ve got a true NBA center. I wouldn’t be surprised if Riley traded up, just go keep Adams from Bos & NY from getting him. Also wouldn’t surprise me if wiley old Riley had someone contact Adams’ family to avoid tampering allegation. All’s fair in love, war and sports.
