Zeigler, We Hardly Knew You

This seems like a move born out of desperation by Trey Zeigler, than anything else.

The 6-foot-5, 203-pound Zeigler averaged 4.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in 31 games this season for Pitt after transferring from Central Michigan. Zeigler’s father, Ernie, a former Pitt assistant, had been fired from Central Michigan following the 2011-12 season. Zeigler was granted a special waiver from the NCAA and was immediately eligible at Pitt.

β€œWe will assist Trey in finding the best situation for him to reach his goals both academically and athletically,” Dixon said. β€œHe’s a great kid, hard worker and good player. We thank Trey for his contribution to our program over the last year and wish him much success in the future.”

I’ve said it a few times, but the worst thing for Zeigler was getting that immediate waiver to play. He didn’t have time to get familiar with the style of Pitt’s offense. Spend a year practicing against his teammates. He tried so hard to fit in on the fly that he was too deferential, tentative and stayed on the perimeter. Rather than utilizing his ability to attack the basket. He needed to be a little more selfish and drive to the basket.

Even Seth Curry struggled at Duke in his first season of playing after transferring from Liberty. And he sat out a year.

Not that Jamie Dixon escapes some blame here. It did not appear throughout the season that he worked particularly hard to put Zeigler in a position where he could attack the basket and penetrate. I don’t know if he never felt comfortable trusting Zeigler, or if he learned in practices that Zeigler was not as good as advertised. But this was not a case where he seemed particularly happy to have Zeigler.

That said, it is a curious — to say the least — decision by Zeigler. He will have to sit after this transfer and only one year of eligibility left. If he is trying to salvage some sort of chance at being drafted by the NBA he is taking a big gamble. He was exposed this season as not being able to do a lot of things against better competition.

He doesn’t have great ball control. His outside shooting and free throw shooting are sub-par — and flat out abysmal when you look at the position he plays. His defense is barely adequate. Part of why it seemed he didn’t attack the basket as frequently as he did at Central Michigan, was that he wasn’t able to handle high-major defenses.

It will be interesting if drops back to the mid-major level.

Oy Vey

Another one !

Top 50 or 100 player to boot.

Another scholarship is available.

Can’t wait for another Epps or Johnson or Gilbert to arrive. πŸ™‚

From the time of Mr. Zeigler’s DUI incident in Oakland to today’s announcement he managed to fade in to total insignificance. AMAZING considering his background and credentials from his family to Central Michigan.

This is a good kid who needs help and a massive shot of confidence…he should go back to a mid major school.

Comment by isnore 04.02.13 @ 6:27 pm

I was astounded at Zeigler’s lack of shooting and defensive technique as the season wore on. Both kept him from being an effective D1 player at Pitt. As a guard, you cannot freelance if your fundamentals are unsound. Perhaps the worst balance at the foul line of any Pitt player this year.

Wish him nothing but luck and a great future.

Comment by Dan 72 04.02.13 @ 6:31 pm

The departure of Zeigler opens up another scholie (3 for next year?)…a huge opportunity for Jamie to upgrade the team for the brutal ACC schedule we will be facing.

Comment by isnore 04.02.13 @ 6:31 pm

Too bad, high expectations, but was not ready for Big East, smart move to go somewhere to get PT.

Hope somebody is out recruiting.

Comment by gc 04.02.13 @ 6:35 pm

“What will Pitt do without Trey Zeigler?” — said no one ever.

If Pitt was smart they would insist that he transfer to an ACC school. What a disappointment this guy was.

Chas, You gave us a very good commentary. There was a stretch in the middle of the season, where Trey Zeigler had some success. Yes, a year of practice could very well have helped him adapt better. Case in point, was the dramatic improvement that Brad Wannamaker made in his second year and the improvement in Cameron Wright from his first to his second year. I think Trey has ability and I wish him success where ever he winds up.

Comment by Justinian 04.02.13 @ 7:13 pm

As per Ray Fittipaldo.. Adams is going to declare for the NBA draft.

Comment by Mailman 04.02.13 @ 7:21 pm

Adams is gone. The shit has hit the fan.

Comment by PatMac 04.02.13 @ 7:22 pm

Adams gone too according to Fittipaldo via Twitter. Will sign with an agent. The hits just keep on coming.

Don’t quite know what worse news could come but I’m sure it’s out there. My guess is that Pitt will soon be rejected from the ACC on some legal technicality and not have a conference to play in for next season. That’s about the only thing that could be worse than this week of news.

Comment by Mac 04.02.13 @ 7:23 pm

I was saying all along Adams leaving was higher than some though. Team would have been good with him. Definitely need to get a couple big time Jucos.

Comment by Wardapalooza 04.02.13 @ 7:29 pm

The Pitt basketball team will have what might be its least talented roster in ten years next year. Not the way to enter the ACC. The football program will be fine. Extremely worried about the future of the hoops program though.

Comment by Floyd 04.02.13 @ 7:29 pm

you know how this looks this is not good recruits are going to say 5 transfers in 2 years
stay away from pitt.
put this with the shell thing this is not good
do we have a revolving door at pitt every one wants to leave.
it does not make a diff that it is not are fult
it looks real bad to recruits.
when will we catch a brake.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.02.13 @ 7:31 pm

Pitt baseball ranked #26

Comment by steve1 04.02.13 @ 7:35 pm

Frank, Adams leaving for NBA is good for recruiting not bad. NBA draft this year is thin. I could easily see Adams impressing in workouts and being Lottery.

Next years team has talent just no size. Looks like we might finally get our wish for a running Pitt team. Will have to run and gun with Zanna starting at the 5.

Comment by Wardapalooza 04.02.13 @ 7:35 pm

adams will leave we are fucked. it is a good thing the 2 we recruited signed there loi becuse we wont get good recruits next year.
they are not going to want to come here to mutch shit happening.
and we dont have a good recruiter on staff any more
no more NY pipe line no slice no barry rohrssen.
we will be back to low rated 3 stars if we are lucky
but then agein dixon did better with thoes kind of players but we are fucked next year for sure.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.02.13 @ 7:41 pm

Adams will not add any value in the NBA for at least 3 years.

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.02.13 @ 7:42 pm

Just our luck.

We now have 3 open scholarships available with the latest defection.

And just about anyone of significance or note is already signed to play.

I hope he doesn’t just bring in 3 stiffs to fill the roster !

There’s a football recruit we signed who’s like 6’4″ or 6’6″ or was great in HS and considered a potential D1 player. Maybe we could get him to play, rather than wasting a scholie on a stiff.

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 7:44 pm

Steve Pederson is to blame in some form or fashion I’m sure. Are we ever in the news for anything positive?

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.02.13 @ 7:44 pm

To quote Larry from Weekend at Bernie’s, this sucks I am so unhappy!! What the flying crap is going on the last few days! Seriously! Can we take any more? I’m about to throw my money i phone out the window! Every five seconds something crappy happens.

Comment by Sweet Caroline 04.02.13 @ 7:48 pm

Sure glad we signed Jamie to a 10 year extension. Pederson undoubtedly tiring both arms patting himself on the back.

Adams leaving is a disiaster. Combine it with Zeigler and Shell same day and another in a long series of “black eyes” for Pitt PR wise.

Pens down 4-1. This has NOT been a good day for Pittsburgh Sports!

Comment by Dan 72 04.02.13 @ 7:48 pm

Yeah Adams won’t contribute for a few years but teams will draft him for his potential and size. And when draft pool is really bad like this year teams will gamble more on potential.

Basketball team will still make NCAAs. Get a couple Ontario Let type big guys from JuCo they will step in right away and contribute. When you have a legit PG like Robinson it makes things easier.

Comment by Wardapalooza 04.02.13 @ 7:50 pm

Unfortunatly it appears to be true according to the Trib. What a crappy day to be a Pitt fan.

Oy Vey Oy Vey Oy Vey.

When bad things happen, they always seem to happen in 3’s (as in we can’t make many 3’s in big games)

Everyone is reporting that Adams has declared for the NBA.

This is frickin unbelievable !!!

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 7:52 pm

Pitt athletics is becoming a joke…this is unbelievable…I’m sick

Comment by Keith 04.02.13 @ 7:54 pm

This is why fundamentals matter. Pitt’s athletic department is ill equipped to run any of it’s programs so decisions like Adams and Shell are magnified.
Why?
Because anyone with a pulse knows our athletic department is always going to underachieve.
Adams is a first round pick. $$$$$$
Wow, I’m pretty good at my job. Maybe Pitt will hire me so I can get more money and do less.
Jamie is nowhere near prepared for this and will get some JUCO with two left feet and no thumbs.
Pitt is always vulnerable because it is always a half step behind.
Good luck to Adams and Zeigler. Duquesne could use Z.

Comment by SFPitt 04.02.13 @ 7:55 pm

He its life and things happen/change. He discussed it with his family and Dixon. Good for Steve because as Ward said he just may be a lottery pick. I love both Pitt basketball and football BUT know there is nothing I can do about it and one thing I will never do is get angry or depressed over it.

Look on the bright side we have two more scholarships for either this year’s class or next. I believe this is why JD is still recruiting players for this class.

I for one look forward to better things to come in both basketball and football instead of heartache and misery. What can I say, am prone to look on the bright side of things and am not so fanatical to let these things affect more than 30 seconds to a minute….

Comment by Kenny 04.02.13 @ 7:56 pm

Comment by panther94 04.02.13 @ 7:57 pm

I can’t say that I blame Adams for leaving. He’s doing what’s best for him and his family. I wish him well.

Comment by Swinging Gate 04.02.13 @ 7:58 pm

Coach didn’t even get another chance to further lower his NBA draft worth.

Guess I can’t blame the kid, he came from a dirt poor family and Dixon has no clue in how to use him.

So this leaves us with one……Talib Zanna to play Center next year.
You know the guy who annually disappears after the rent-a-win season is over.

The backup at Center right now would be, idk.

Young, Patterson, Moore….. Arnold Ziffle.

Maybe we could bring back Yuri Demetreous.

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 7:58 pm

Bright side the one game Zanna played at center he had a monster game.

Comment by Wardapalooza 04.02.13 @ 8:02 pm

Chas can just add to the Title of this post.

Adams & Zeigler, We Hardly Knew Yee !

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 8:02 pm

Right now I would take Lucious Keese!!

Comment by Dan 72 04.02.13 @ 8:03 pm

Does Coach still have Cassin Digg’s phone number ?

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 8:03 pm

Arnold Ziffle LOL!!! You would have to pry him from Fred’s and Doris’s cold, dead hands. Aint happening!!!

Comment by Kenny 04.02.13 @ 8:04 pm

It was posted earlier on Twitter that Pitt might be getting a JUCO center that previously committed to North Carolina State. Was a teammate of incoming recruit Josh Newkirk in school.

Comment by Mailman 04.02.13 @ 8:04 pm

I remember Lucious Keese,

he looked like a Black Herman Munster.

Was about as nimble as Herman too !!! lol

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 8:05 pm

I’m still sick!!

Comment by Keith 04.02.13 @ 8:06 pm

Wow, this really blows. Happy for Adams, I think one more year would’ve helped but, best of luck to him.

Pitt on the other hand….I mean what can you say. Huge loss.

Comment by Kenny Powers 04.02.13 @ 8:06 pm

F*ck. Why can’t we ever have guys who decide to stay to win that championship (or whatever)? I’m usually an optimist, but I’m not feeling good about our team next year.

Comment by panther94 04.02.13 @ 8:07 pm

Coach’s backup plan is Aaron Nwanko…the big Wanker

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 8:08 pm

man….if we were all grippn about JD this year…it’s gonna be a real bad year next year…im predicting no tourny…and JD’s head on a platter!!

Comment by Keith 04.02.13 @ 8:08 pm

I mean this is a HUGE problem..we have had what like four transfers and on leaving for the pros in less than a year…what does this say????…no one wants to play defense first!!! we need to score F’n points….change your style JD…..I’m so pissed and bumbed right now!!!!!

Comment by Keith 04.02.13 @ 8:10 pm

We’re gonna be the new Duke in football and the new Wake Forest in bball.

And here I was looking forward to attending Pitt Road games down here in Dixie.

Comment by EMel 04.02.13 @ 8:14 pm

EMel – wife has hidden my latest stash or I would send you one. Watching the Pens and the news on Pitt has me about as enraged as I have been. Only thing that would cure my anger would be Pederson resigning.

Comment by Dan 72 04.02.13 @ 8:18 pm

EMel what good is 4 more scholarships when
all most every one is signed for this year
and they are not in line to come to pitt any way
we are not the first pick any more.
we have no ace recruiter no NY pipe line any more
no slice no barry rohrssen
to many transfers we look like a bb school in trouble to these kids they are not going to want any part of us.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.02.13 @ 8:18 pm

Adams leaving has nothing to do with Dixon’s style of play and everything to do with the fact that he wants to provide for himself and his family. I imagine seeing Kevin Ware’s injury on Sunday only made his decision to leave that much easier.

Some fans need to get a grip. Yes, this a huge blow to Pitt in the short-term. But if he’s picked in the first round of this year’s draft, it could be quite beneficial to the program in the long-run. If it wants truly elite recruits, the program-changers, then Pitt needs to start sending kids to the NBA on a consistent basis. Hopefully, Adams is the beginning of such a trend.

Comment by Swinging Gate 04.02.13 @ 8:21 pm

That’s the positive outlook I’ve been waiting to hear. Thanks Swinging Gate. Anyway, I think JJ and Lamar are going to need to be leaders next year. No more hesitation with shooting. I think they’re both fully capable of taking over. Maybe they will.

Comment by panther94 04.02.13 @ 8:36 pm

Swinging mabe in the long run but that wont help
next years team plus there have been to many
transfers in the last 2 years dont think outher schools wont use that when we are recruiting
they will they will say to thoes kids you dont want to go to pitt every one transfers out of there.

and as dockish said we dont have a top notch recruiter any more.

for next year we are fucked.

Comment by FRANKCAN 04.02.13 @ 8:41 pm

Everyone freaks out about Dixon not getting elite talent. He gets an elite guy Adams and now everyone is freaking out that he is leaving. That’s what happens elite guys leave ASAP.

Impact on recruiting will be minimal. Recruits don’t care what other guys do.

Comment by Wardapalooza 04.02.13 @ 8:49 pm

Next year will be a disaster but rest assured cyanide will give Jamie another 7 years on top of e 10

Comment by Upittbaseball 04.02.13 @ 8:54 pm

We are stuck with Dixon for 10 years this is the major problem.
Dixon completely destroyed Adams confidence by limiting his minutes (treating him like he was just like Carmen Wright in his freshman year).
There is no question now that Dixon sucks and it was not Birch, Adams, Zeigler that did not meet their potential it was Dixon favortism to headcases like Gibbs and Woodall.
If I were Robinson I would get out while he can and Young if he is only a verbal to get back in the pool.
It seems that only the bad apples those who can only play in a rigid structure stay at Pitt.
I am sick of this shit until Dixon is fired I will follow Adams career in the NBA.

Comment by pittisit 04.03.13 @ 2:50 am

About Pitt new reputation even McKenzie said that Schell leaving makes an immediate opening for him but he has to wonder what the hell is going on there with all the transfers, especially someone of Schells ability.
Schell is small potatoes compared to the ability of Adams and what is left of a program that has been sinking since 2009 regarding quality players.
Dixon is a terrible recruiter and got Adams by luck not recruting ability.
Despite Adams statement about money as was often visable on his face last year he realizes regardless of what he does he progression under Dixon will be limited so he will not move up by staying another year at Pitt.
Better to go now get a guaranteed contract as first round draft pick, get considerably better coaching and opportunities then if he stayed at Pitt that ruined other careers, Sam Young, and work toward big pay day when contract expires.

Comment by pittisit 04.03.13 @ 3:14 am

Transfer activity in FB driven by coaching changes. Adams
should take the money. Millionaire at 18. He helped us win
24 games. Trey needs to transfer….clearly not as good as
advertised….transfer to get playing time. Disappointed
about Shell however better that he transfers now rather
than becoming a malcontent. Pitt teams will survive.

Comment by JR 04.03.13 @ 5:44 am

Dixon took the ball out of his hands, like he does for so many players. They kids could aattack the basket, ie Depaul. After that game dixon wouldn’t play him anymore. Its the style of play that costs this team in the post season. Defense can’t win every game. This will hurt hime getting any type of players that will drive and create. Pitt basketball heading for the crapper!

Comment by blaise 04.03.13 @ 8:54 am

Adams making the right move. A millionaire
at 18. He play at least 10 yrs in the NBA.
Think Aaron Gray. Trey never fit. Would
like to see film of his games at CMU.

Lets go Pitt! Better days ahead.

Comment by JR 04.03.13 @ 8:58 am

Trey is leaving.

Where will we find another player that can recklessly drive into the lane and turn the ball over time and time again?

Adams is a loss but the kids family needs money and he is going to get a BIG payday as that’s how it is.

The good news we have opened two positions on the roster.
