Big East Dirge

It shouldn’t be a surprise. As soon as the Big East remaindermen leaked that they would let Notre Dame join the ACC for the 2013 season with Pitt and Syracuse for as little as $2.5 million. But in the impeccable timing of the Big East, they are going to approve that the Domers are free — right before the start of the Big East Tournament.

Notre Dame’s basketball teams will play in the ACC next year, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The Big East presidents will vote on the issue Tuesday morning, and an announcement is expected sometime after their conference call ends.

“It’s everyone’s intention that this will happen tomorrow,” said the source.

Way to lock in the direction of the conversation. Look, I know it is hard to generate enthusiasm for the first two games of USF-Seton Hall and DePaul-Rutgers, but this isn’t the way to do it.

About the only way I can figure the America 12/Remaining Big East is doing, is that they are fully committing to the “this is a sad week for college basketball with the demise of the Big East as we knew it because the Big East Tournament will never be the same again” storyline. Trying to poison the well for the basketball only Big East’s future BET.

So, do Pitt and Cuse stop payment on their exit fees and go back to court? I would think so.

And why is Louisville waiting a year to get to the ACC?

nd the kiss of death to the aac

Louisville waiting a year for football, would have been impractical to schedule (plus there was the exit fee to worry about). They probably want to move all at once too, don’t split their basketball team from their football team in terms of conferences.

America 12? I would suggest “Conference USA Part Deux”.

There’s no excitement for the first 2 BET games today? This will be our last chance to see DePaul and Rutgers in the “Battle for the Basement”. Kinda sad to see that go.

Can’t wait until the BE is no longer discussed
The BE should join the CUSA

Can’t wait until Rutgers joins the B10. The
travel schedule will rival WVU’s. Also
the nation cannot wait until the first
Rutgers/Indiana game??

Let’s not get our undies in a knot over ND. The reality is they have leverage because they are still in and have a legitimate claim that they should share in the 100 million war chest built up by departing schools. So they gave that claim up in exchange for being released from any exit fee. With legal fees now out of the equation, it was a good and smart deal for both sides.
Pitt and Syracuse signed a settlement agreement and that is bound by contract law, not subsequent dealings with others.

Not really sure what ND offers the ACC after looking at this for awhile???

I hope no one is under the illusion that ND will help one iota in keeping the ACC together.

If UNC & UVA entertain thoughts for the Big Ten, FSU & Clemson to the Big 12 and Va.Tech and NC St. to the SEC, playing Notre Dame once every 4 or 5 years will in no way come into play on their decisions. I mean, that won’t even be an afterthought, let alone a thought.

The basketball was allready one of the two best conferences, with Pitt, Syracuse and Louisville being added, it will clearly be the best.

I haven’t seen anywhere that they’ve added anything to any dollar figures for the conference or members of the conference???

I guess Duke and Wake Forest will get a home football game payday once every 8 to 10 years.

Notre Dame now has a cushy home in a top 5 power conference (for now), for it’s 11 or 12 Olympic sports.

Unless there is a behind the scenes agreement that ND is joing in football in 4 or 5 years, I’m missing the reasoning.

I’m sure Notre Dame is extremely thrilled.

I’m not sure that any east coast university will give much thought to the Big 12 after seeing what happened with the Hoopies. Not any intelligent ones anyway.

@longsuffering, agreee, and they have quite a mess.

However, if they are paying 4 or 5, or 6 or 7 million more a year, then most A.D.’s can hardly say no.

What I never really gave much thought too (unbelievably, yes I know), was that, that is every year!!!

So, each financial year, you start with another extra 5 or so million in the budget. Hard to turn down.

I believe that ESPN will have to do something, to at least get the ACC teams in the ball park of the other big conferences.

Will ESPN want to do something?? What do their books look like these days??

Until they are at least close, there will always be the realignment thing hanging over the conferences head.

And, I hate that!! This isn’t how I thought it would play out. I was thrilled Pitt got in the door of the ACC, and that there would be 5 big conferences.

Geographically, you have the Eastern Conf, the Midwestern, the Southeastern, the Southwestern and the Western. Seemed about right.

Didn’t count on Delaney being this much of a pacman gobbling everything up.

Not stressing as compared to life, only in the college football world of life.

Hey, I’m still having stuffed peppers for lunch!!

Couldn’t imagine it but there was a inside cover trib reveiw story singing the praises of Pederson as some kind of great AD.What a bunch of crap. They hardly have the space to tell us the score and schedule of most Pitt basketball games but they can devote a full page inside cover telling us how wonderful that bozo is.I will cancel my subscription today. The idiot destroys what little bit of a football program we had and leaves and returns yet he is the brains behind how we got in the ACC.Pederson is a snobby jerk who should have been fired and only dodged the bullet because of his being buddy buddy with the plaid set who see Pitt athletics as a necessary evil.We haven’t seen the last of his screw ups and for the Trib to be singing his praises smells of payoffs to me.

Dan when ND joins the ACC and gives them 5 football games a year plus bb acc can re do the tv deal they say it will get each team a 2 millon
hike from 17 million to 19 million so that is a good reason to bring them in.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.12.13 @ 12:46 pm

sfpitt ND was not in the football part of big east so they had no claim on the 100 milliom war chest

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.12.13 @ 12:51 pm

the reason it cost ND onlt 2 and half million to het out is they were only a bb member no football
i think that is why.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.12.13 @ 12:54 pm

sfpitt ND was not in the football part of big east so they had no claim on the 100 milliom war chest
that should read not as mutch as the football schools they would have got a small amount not worth staying

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.12.13 @ 1:09 pm

I don’t know Frank?? I know NBC has the ND home games.

As for the away games at ACC schools, never really heard anything about that.

I would think the schools that have the home game would get some cash, for being on tv, which they will against ND.

As for the conference, I don’t know.

The Maryland move was the one that got me. From their viewpoint, they were in a financial mess, so they had to go.

Why they were ever offered??? Just seems like overkill to me.

I know it’s about money and tv, but when is enough, enough??

I could see the Big10 needing a twelvth in Nebraska, I could see A&M and it’s cohorts not happy with Texas and moving on.

WVU needed a home. Can see that.

Some will say Delaney is a visionary. I know some so called “visionaries” that ruined a lot of good things too.

Comment by Dan 03.12.13 @ 1:36 pm

p.s. the only one I don’t like the fit, geographically is WVU. That’s ridiculous.

Just sayin’, ACC told them no, they had to find a home.

Ideally, the should be with us in the ACC.

Comment by Dan 03.12.13 @ 1:38 pm

I liked the Trib right up to the story today deifying Pederson. What a load of Bullsh..!

Why would they even write such a story? Perhaps because we are in the midst of some good feelings about Pitt BBall and the 2013 football team is undefeated so far.

Haven’t been very many moments under Pederson where good feelings have flowed with us Pitt Alums.

Does anyone know the date of the Spring Game?

Comment by Dan 72 03.12.13 @ 2:51 pm

ND is probably wishing they waited it out and just joined the Catholic 7.

Comment by Vulcan Rob 03.12.13 @ 3:22 pm

I’m pretty sure that the big east pie wasn’t sliced according to football participation. Were that the case, the C7 would have received less and I’m sure their share wasn’t diminished.
But assume you are right: that would leave the C7 and the football schools to divide the 100 mil. If ND was only entitled to 2.5% of that, well, there goes the exit fee.
@Vulcan. Sure ND wishes it could play hoops with the C7, but that puts ALL their other sports in the minor leagues.
You can’t overlook that because ND cares an awful lot about those sports.
