Open Thread: Pitt-Delaware State

End of year projects being rushed or made at the last minute. Having to buy presents. Kid’s school stuff. A flurry of various doctors’ appointments to make sure all the money is used from the benefits account before the end of the year. There is nothing about December that isn’t rushed, hurried or harried. Tonight it is my daughter’s holiday concert. I love her, but sitting through an hour plus of kids from 4-11 doing Christmas music has to at least hold a spot in purgatory.

The concert is — of course — set for 7 pm. Same as the game with the Hornets. It appears to be a game that can only be viewed via the Pitt website. Guess I’ll be surreptitiously checking my phone for updates tonight.

As for the Hornets. They are a MEAC team. A 5-6 record. No surprise they are renting themselves out for beatings. They are in the midst of a 6-game road trip. They are coming off an overtime loss that nearly had them knock off Penn State. Which would have still counted as beating a major conference opponent. They also beat Delaware (making the Blue Hens’ upset win over Virginia look that much more fluky and unhelpful for Pitt’s non-con SOS)

About the only intrigue in this game is that DSU features a center named Kendall Gray. In one player, it can evoke the frontcourt of the 2005-2007 Panthers.

Sagarin predicts between a 17 (ELO) and 33 (Predictor) point Pitt victory. We shall see.

Comcast has the game on 188.

From the Rapid Fire section of Jason King’s ESPN.com piece today:

Team we should be talking about more: Pittsburgh

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.19.12 @ 4:54 pm

Chas – my heart goes out to you while in purgatory tonight. My wife, daughter are elementary school teachers. The concerts are unbearable and long. Like watching an 8 yolds soccer nmatch. It gets better. Jr Hi and High School concerts are amazing.

No line on Pitt from Vegas.

Oakland getting 11 points from the very awful WVU team.

Comment by Dan 72 12.19.12 @ 4:55 pm

No odds being reported on this game from any line. So, the line from Texas is Pitt -22 with the O/U at 140.

Comment by TX Panther 12.19.12 @ 5:00 pm

Quasi Pitt question, what happened to John Seibel at the 93.7?

Comment by dcpinpgh 12.19.12 @ 5:09 pm

Seibel was let go, according to Smizik.

Comment by Moe Greene 12.19.12 @ 5:25 pm

I liked Seibel. Wonder if he took severance or said screw the non compete and is looking in the area?

Comment by SFPitt 12.19.12 @ 5:34 pm

Chas purgatory is better than hell. Gotta tell this story.
I’m 18 and dating a contestant in the Junior Miss pageant day after Thanksgiving. I am on my way out and new boyfriend on his way in.
Instead of watching football and eating cold turkey, I go to the damn pageant. Worse is that I have a blind pimple growing rapidly at the tip of my nose: even mire worse is the fact that new boyfriend is there too: worse yet is that hypochondriac grandma is present complaining about everything. Proving that God made me pay for sins I still haven’t committed (yeah, Catholic) my girlfriend wins the damn pageant.
You have not lived until you have seen the head of a 17 year old beauty queen triple in size in a matter of minutes.
So here we are at the damn winners reception; me, new beau, her brothers, parents, grandma whining and well wishers galore. God, my girls face almost cracked from smiling.
My nose is now ripe, redder than Rudolph and pulsating. My fate was sealed when, in the only 5 seconds of complete silence the entire night, the damn grandma pierces the silence by turning to me and saying in a clear, whiny voice “HEY SFPITT! WHAT’S THAT ON YOUR NOSE?”
Once my friends got wind if that scene I had to go into the witness protection program for 2 months.
Wait until your daughter gets older and boyfriends have to sit thru these things? I only hope out there tonight some poor SOB boyfriend can stand the pain.
Had to get that out guys!!

Heading down to the game.

Pop the sucker, please!

Back to hoops.

Gasaway finally waxing poetic about Pitt hoops, no longer f*rting around:

But I’m convinced he has yet to see the team play, nary a word about James Robinson.

My wife is a big SC Gamecock fan. Wants to watch the SC women play Stanford as it is the second game of double header with the men’s game (started at 5pm EST). Looked at the channel guide to see if women’s was on TV.

To make a long story short, PITT game is scheduled to be on CSS (Comcast Sports South). So if you live in ths south or at least upstate SC check your TV guide. CSS is not a HD channel but in our basic tier,

Comment by PITT-cocks Fan 12.19.12 @ 6:19 pm

I wasn’t a huge Siiebel fan but I thought the days it was only him and Miller were the team on the fan.

It amazes my the Pony can walk. He had to get his jobs on his knees, praying of course

Comment by DCPinPGH 12.19.12 @ 6:20 pm

Anyone in central Jersey with comcast. The game is on the comcast network.

Is Taylor hurt?

Comment by Jimbo 12.19.12 @ 7:32 pm

Pitt up 6 (29-23), 3:30 left in the first half. Have only listened the last 5 minutes. Sounds ugly.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.19.12 @ 7:35 pm

Cincinnati looks like dog vomit. They’re playing Xavier on ESPN2.

Comment by Denny 12.19.12 @ 7:40 pm

Woodall looks lazy. Bad passes and drives.
Way too many unforced errors for the entire team.
They better tighten-up in the 2nd half.

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 7:46 pm

@velvil – thanks for the link. Gametracker is almost as painful as the first half of this game.

Comment by San Diego Panther 69 12.19.12 @ 7:51 pm

Julius Page should be color man on broadcast. B owman not good.

Comment by Jimbo 12.19.12 @ 7:52 pm

Woodall refuses to give any kind of effort on defense. Reminded me of Gibbs. Dixon needs to challenge him. If he doesn’t respond, sit him. Let Zeigler play. He needs the minutes and he will play hard.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 12.19.12 @ 7:53 pm

Jimbo,
I agree Bowman is not good.
But Page talks about himself too much, I don’t think he would be better.

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 7:54 pm

Yes, Taylor has a foot injury. Doesn’t sound serious

Comment by velvil 12.19.12 @ 8:08 pm

Pitt 17 assists on 20 baskets. Unreal.

Comment by velvil 12.19.12 @ 8:13 pm

Curtis Aiken is doing the color, not Marcus Bowman. Sounds like yet another great 2nd half turnaround.

Comment by KeyboardKev 12.19.12 @ 8:22 pm

Aiken on radio, Brown on TV.

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 8:24 pm

*BOWMAN

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 8:24 pm

Thanks, xfmrman. No TV here so I have the radio on. No Taylor and not much Dick Groat tonight either.

Comment by KeyboardKev 12.19.12 @ 8:24 pm

33 rebounds and not one person in double figures. Couldn’t watch the game but that sounds like an interesting stat.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.19.12 @ 8:52 pm

Also interesting stats:
24 assists on 30 baskets.
DSU 10 rebs.

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 9:05 pm

That means we must have been doing well in the paint to have so many assists. Also interesting, Zanna (9) and Adams (8) each almost outrebounded Del State (10).

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.19.12 @ 9:09 pm

Final 71-43.

Comment by Pitt1972 12.19.12 @ 9:10 pm

Pitt Dad,
2nd half was a dunk-fest.

Comment by xfmrman 12.19.12 @ 9:12 pm

Nice. Wish I could have seen it. Well at least the Kennesaw State game will be on TV here in NY.

Winter break. Even in Morgantown.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.19.12 @ 10:17 pm

Back from the game, very entertaining. Impossible to tell how high our upside is. Lot’s of talent, still lot’s of mistakes. My guess, it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride. On any given night who knows, but it should be fun.

Bring on the Big East.

who sees the irony in oakland grizzlies vs. wv mountaineers?

Comment by panther94 12.19.12 @ 10:59 pm

maybe the bear will win this one

Comment by panther94 12.19.12 @ 11:00 pm

2nd half reminded of the days of Ontario Lett being fed for easy layups by the great one, the Brandon Knight. Also Chevy by Carl.

Again a great 2nd half beatdown, held them below 20 points for the half. Pitt 40 -16

Other games of note:

Cincy beat Xavier 60-45 (good for us)
Notre Dame 85 Kennesaw St. (next opponent) 57
UTEP 91 Oregon 84 (OU was #26 in AP)
Wisky-Green Bay 49 Marquette 47
Hoopies 76 Oakland 71
Texas 85 #23 North Carolina 67

We might be Ranked Next Week !!!

HTP !
Veritas et Virtus !

Comment by Emel 12.19.12 @ 11:28 pm

Detroit gave CUSE a run for its money last week.. and it was a much closer game then pitt… so maybe pitt isn’t THAT overrated.

Comment by snala the panther 12.19.12 @ 11:28 pm

Ironically the UNC loss might get PITT into the Top 25 next week.

Well it’s ironic for me, because the very 1rst basketball game I ever saw in my life was around 1968, my dad took me to see The Tarheels at Fitzgerald and Pitt actually won. Even though UNC had the great Charlie Scott (first black superstar of the ACC), George Karl from Penn Hills and Dennis Wuycich from Ambridge.

It was truly amazing PITT won this game considering the talent difference on the teams.
I remember we had Bill Sulkowski, Buzzy Hairston and that’s about all I can remember off the top of my head.

Comment by Emel 12.19.12 @ 11:35 pm

I could listen to Josh Miller all day. Very underrated, diamond in the rough.

Allthough, maybe that’s what I like about him, doesn’t sound like a radio guy.

Very cool and very laid back.

Like Starkey too. Liked Seibel, he was kind of the straight man, and always had some good points.

I thought he was just on vacation.

Pony’s a jack ass, and so is that Colon Dunlap, he’s a jerk.

Comment by Dan 12.20.12 @ 12:49 am

Khem Birch had 11 points 9 rebounds in 25 minutes last night. It’s wrong to hope for a nineteen year old to fail at basketball, but I’m going to do it anyway.

Comment by Denny 12.20.12 @ 6:58 am

Emel, Bill Sulkowski and Buzzy Hairston!! This is probably the first I heard these names on >40 yrs … and can’t believe I remember them.

I also remember that Duquesne was really good back then with Bill Zopf, Jarret Durham, Moe Barr and Nelson Twins

Comment by wbb 12.20.12 @ 7:45 am

Caught the halftime score on game tracker and still didn’t bother to keep tabs. The non-con has so many lame opponents I just went to sleep assuming correctly that Pitt would get it together and own the 2nd half. . . and they did. Debating whether or not to bother watching the replay. Maybe we should schedule the Hoopies (they had their hands full with Oakland too btw). Or at least some decect mid major Philly schools. Some of Pitt’s noncons I had honestly never heard of. At least if they schedule Harvey Mudd or Rose-Hulman I could say ‘Oh maybe the suck at basketball but they produce a lot of talented engineers’.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 12.20.12 @ 9:38 am

@Denny

Khem Birch will fail at life. I’m not rooting for it, but I just have a hunch

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 12.20.12 @ 9:40 am

Ghost, while paying the Hoopies hsould be a no-brainer, I concur about the playing the Philly schools (we did play at Temple last year – Birch’s best game as a Panther)

I also don’t understand why we don’t play schools like Kent St and Akron … like FB, many of these MAC schools play decent BB and they’re not that far away
