The wife and I don’t get many nights out without the kids. It just doesn’t happen. We don’t have family near us to watch the kids on the cheap. So any night out comes with an additional surcharge. When the opportunity does arise, unless there is a really good reason to say no you take it. Playing a 4-7 MEAC team is not a good enough reason not to take advantage.

The game is airing on ESPN3, so I’ll catch a replay later tonight.

Enjoy Frankcan too and I can’t spell either.

Gattuso would probably be as good an option as any, but Paul Chryst tends to hire people he knows and has worked with. The biggest excption id Bobby Engram. I’m sure, that given the opportunity, Gattuso would want to come back home.
I don’t know for sure, but I think he was a good recruiter. Dave Wannstedt’s staff did a pretty good job in that regard.

Comment by Justinian 12.17.12 @ 11:14 am

Todd Orlando is a Pittsburgh guy, I think he went to Central Catholic HS. Also went to Wisky.

Would be an excellent hire and is available since Cristobal got fired at FIU. Was at UConn for 12 years and helped Randy Edsall build that program, and left as the DC.

This would be a good get !

A couple of assorted rants:

My brother graduated from Arts and Sciences on Saturday. They had it in the Cathedral Commons Room. There were 8 rows of seats for the families and friends of a couple hundred graduates. My girlfriend and I had to watch from the the second floor. I thought Steve Pederson organized this event.

Second, as a diehard Buffalo Bills fan, Dave Wannestedt is clueless. Thank God we have Chyrst. The Wanny D let by 31 points to the Seahawks in less than a half and have broken several NFL records for sucking.

Is Mike Archer being retained by NC State?

Butler gets payback for their CBI loss to Pitt…the Bulldogs’ upset of #1 Indiana, once again keeps Pitt from Top 25 ranking. We were even surpassed by Oregon, as the top vote-getter in the ORV column.

Surprisingly, we are still in the ESPN Top 25 Power Rankings, though we fell two spots.

Looks like we’ll have to win against Cincy to be considered for Top 25 ranking…maybe even a convincing win.

Comment by Lou 12.17.12 @ 2:31 pm

we don’t deserve being ranked with this out of conference schedule. If and when we do pretty well in the BE, then we will get our due.

Comment by wbb 12.17.12 @ 2:43 pm

From Eamonn Brennan on ESPN.com

•Pittsburgh remains unranked yet again. The Panthers are underrated. I say this every week. I said it last week. I will say it again next week. And the week after that, too, if I have to. Doesn’t anyone notice this?! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.17.12 @ 3:01 pm

Before issuing awards to the Pitt basketball team and their gawdy record against the weakest opposition Dixon could find, why don’t we wait until the team starts playing real opponents. C’mon all you sycophants, attack me.

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.17.12 @ 3:21 pm

The one CBS sports.com write has us as 22, and we probably deserve to be better … but until we post wins against good teams, it ain’t going to happen

Comment by wbb 12.17.12 @ 3:22 pm

@TonyinHouston – I’ve said it before, I don’t care how we are ranked now. I just care about winning the BET and being ranked #1 in the poll after the final 4. I just thought it would be interesting to post what others are saying about the team.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.17.12 @ 3:40 pm

Foster is set to announce his decision this friday, the 21st at 2:30 pm. Roll Tide, or Hail to Pitt? Lets hope its the latter. I really hope we get him because I’m not optimistic Boyd will be coming to Oakland.

Comment by Kenny Powers 12.17.12 @ 4:53 pm

Rankings matter in Match.
Then and only then.

Comment by SFPitt 12.17.12 @ 5:01 pm

@TonyinHouston How’s life as a troll? Is it really that fun for you? I haven’t seen anybody on this site “issuing awards to the Pitt basketball team.” In fact, most people — especially the season ticket holders — have been complaining about the weak schedule. When you play in the Big East, the non-con is irrelevant: you can’t hide from the conference schedule.

I think most people are just saying this looks like a traditional Jamie Dixon team.

But I’m sure that won’t stop you from trolling.

Troll.

Comment by Denny 12.17.12 @ 5:53 pm

I love being overlooked by the polls,we are a few bad minutes away from being ranked in the top 10 now and we have improved dramaticaly since. This team will have some more bad games because they are starting 2 freshman, but the upside is we are going to have some great minutes too, because we have lots of legit talent and a great coach.HTP

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.17.12 @ 5:53 pm

tonyhouston Lots of teams played easy teams last week, but how many pounded them by 40+? We actually allowed Bethune cookman to get 6 rebounds for the game. This team hasn’t proven a thing but anyone watching closely knows they are way underated.Polls are for trolls so go sit under one.

Can we all agree that the Trib’s coverage of the Panthers is head and shoulders above that of the PG? Living in Philly, I can only get both papers on-line, but the Trib constantly out-scoops the PG on everything Pitt.

Comment by PittStadiumShuffle 12.17.12 @ 7:49 pm

I think there is an assistant on ND defensive staff that coached with Chryst – he may be waiting until after the NC game to decide on a D-Coord.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.17.12 @ 7:56 pm

I really don’t worry about Pitt’s ranking this early in basketball season. They’ve been number 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament and have gotten beaten in the past. Let’s just hope they continue to develop and improve as the season goes on. Hopefully they will be playing their best ball at the end of the season.

Comment by Justinian 12.17.12 @ 8:00 pm

I think Foster says H2P!

Can’t wait for Pitt vs Cincy. Cincy hasn’t played anyone either yet they are ranked.

What matters most like several have said is the rank near the end of the season for tourney seeding and for the right to call yourself a champion.

Comment by TX Panther 12.17.12 @ 8:03 pm

Strange PITT had 177 votes in the AP poll last week tied at #26 with Oregon. I thought we’d move into the Top 25, since #23 Wichita State lost to an unranked 4-3 Tenn team. However I forgot Butler was unranked and after beating IU they leapfrogged us and rightfully so. They also beat UNC while losing at Xavier and Illinois.

The following is kind of hard to comprehend though.

We LOST 40 some votes lol. Why? cause we won by the largest margin of ANY team over the weekend. And yes 95% of all the Top teams played Rent-A-Win teams over the weekend. We are not doing anything anybody else isn’t doing and have done for many many years. Syracuse typically never leaves the friendly confines of the Carrier Dump BEFORE January. And against a sordid bunch of weaklings to boot. It never keeps them OUT of the rankings though. Same with a lot of these teams. Not our fault, we got paired against Delaware in the NIT.

If Michigan is #2 (and they received a couple #1 vctes) we should be somewhere in the Top 25, as that game we down to the final minute and there were many questionable calls against us.

Comment by Emel 12.17.12 @ 8:44 pm

The nice thing about college basketball is that the rankings really don’t mean squat until March Maddness, and then only for seeding purposes.
Actual playing results trumps the rankings, everytime.

Still, it would have been nice to have beaten Michigan and therefore be getting some ranking recognition, just bragging rights during the season if nothing more.

BTW, regarding football recruiting, either Foster or Boyd committing would fulfill my Christmas list. Both of them ending up at Pitt and I’d start believing in Santa Claus again.

Kansas is 8-1 with a lousy NC schedule and a loss to the only good team they played….#22 MSU. Yet they’re ranked #9. We beat Lehigh and lost a close game to #2 Michigan…

OSU is much the same as Kansas. Rankings are nothing more than the opinions of idiots.

Comment by Jackagain 12.17.12 @ 9:06 pm

Another travesty in the USA/Poll, Butler just squeezed in at #25. Really. They just beat the #1 team in the country, IU. And they beat then #9 UNC by 11 points. Both are 8-2. Yet UNC is ranked #20, while a team with the same record, 8-2, who just beat the #1 team in the country and beat UNC by 11 is ranked #25. Butler has also beaten Marquette which gives them a #3 RPI, UNC isn’t even on the TOP 25 RPI !!! In fact UNC has a 43 RPI. Pitt’s is #54, so that’s not as bad as it seems.

Who are these morons that vote in the USA/ESPN poll ? The ESPN studio nitwits. 🙂

Comment by Emel 12.17.12 @ 9:19 pm

The rankings do matter.

As I’ve explained before, Pitt will move up much higher in the rankings if they are already in it, when we beat #11 Cincy rather than just squeezing in. Just like what happened to Butler in this USA/ESPN poll today and I talk about above.

Had Butler already been ranked like say #20 or so, they’d be right on the doorstep of the Top 10 now after beating #1 Indiana. In USA/ESPN’s mind there huge win over IU ONLY merited putting them in at #25. That’s the difference if your ranked when you beat a top team.

Also if they lose now in an upset, they’re right back out of the Top 25. Had they been up around the Top 10, they would only lose a few spots.

Huge difference. Everything matters. Especially with PITT !

Comment by Emel 12.17.12 @ 9:26 pm

Pitt has very good for 9 of the last 10 years. The problem is that they were a dissapointment last year and when a lot of people had them ranked. The silly part about it is that Pitt has been a program that Syracuse over the last ten years, yet from a national viewpoint Syracuse is talked about as the better program. As Emel commented above, they never leave the Carrior Dome before Big East play and play nothing but cupcakes and no

Comment by Justinian 12.17.12 @ 9:41 pm

As I said Emil….rankings are merely the biased opinions of idiots. Thank God for March….

Now if they can only fix college football…

First fix would be eliminate rankings until at least after the 3rd game of the season.

Comment by Jackagain 12.17.12 @ 9:41 pm

If anyone is interested, UNLV is playing on one if the national CBS stations. Only about 7 minutes left in the second half. Birch with two buckets so far, not much PT.

Comment by Lou 12.17.12 @ 9:45 pm

continued. no one says anything. I thought the Panthers were totally outplaying Michigan in the first half, but they didn’t build up the leasd they should have. In the second half Michigan went to 1-3-1 and Pitt didn’t hande it well. Getting a win against a team ranked No. 4 would have been terrific for the perception and ranking. At this point they can’t worry about any of that stuff. They just need to win their games.

We beat Detroit by 13. Syracuse only beat them by 4. And that’s with Cuse taking 32 free throws to Detroit’s 12. And Detroit won the second half big and almost came back and won. Pitt crushed Detroit in the second half. So, who’s better, Pitt or Syracuse?

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.17.12 @ 11:55 pm

@Tony, not sure you know what the word sychophant means. To refer to people on here with that word, hell, we’ll take it.

Usually people say we’re negative!!!

As Denny said, you must not be checking into the Blather as often.

Most people have been ticked about the non-con schedule.

However, after doing the research, other than a few teams here and there, Pitt is doing the same thing everyone is now. Budgets are tight, can’t afford to lose a home game.

Hey, I’m one the ones that thinks the fans should get thrown a bone, however, after looking into it, yes, pretty much everyone doing the same thing.

The only difference, Dixon is trying to get the cupcakes that may win their conference and get into the NCAA’s.

As for Pitt and the top 25. Actually some good points have been given that Pitt should be in their.

They have just as much being in there than a lot of the other teams, that, by the way, have played cream puff schedules also.

There are also points, why we shouldn’t, that are understood also. We had a crappy season last year, and it’s going to take a some wins in conference to get in.

I personally don’t worry about it, go 26-7 or 25-8 and the rest will take care of itself.

Not attacking you either. Just noticed your use of the word sychophant, and realized how out of place and misused it is in regards to PittBlather commenters.

Have a great day!!

Comment by Dan 12.18.12 @ 2:30 am

Sychophant? The teachers didn’t quiz us on words like that when I was in school. That’s one fancy word and I’m not even completely sure what it means. Probably a word that’s used quite often at Pedo State among students and alum who fancy themselves.

Well Pitt’s RPI ranking is #54 (of 300 teams)so that sort of blows your theory out of the water there, Tony boy.

Now are you sure what sycophant means, because we don’t have many if any on here. We all call it the way we see it for the most part!

P.S. it’s gaudy btw 🙂

Comment by Emel 12.18.12 @ 7:14 am

So are we from Creepy Valley (home of the Pedo) or Morganhole (home of the illiterate).

Comment by Emel 12.18.12 @ 7:19 am

I can totally understand definition number 2. I’m more familiar with the word brown noser. Tony in Houston, I can understand what you’re sayin. Pitt hasn’t played quality opposition but not many Top25 teams have either. We’ll see how good Pitt is in short order. I hope they continue to learn, gel and get better as the brutal Big East schedule begins. But why would a brown noser attack you. You probably meant to say omnicient. Did I get that fancy word right? That’s a word for know it all.

Comment by TX Panther 12.18.12 @ 7:41 am

Now, now. There are plenty of games left on Pitt’s schedule this season to assess their deserved or undeserved ranking. Let’s get along, it’s the season… HTP!

Comment by MariettaMike 12.18.12 @ 8:03 am

Maybe we should talk more about the BB uniforms – colors, scripts, etc. LOL

Comment by rayhpgh 12.18.12 @ 9:16 am

I thought being omniscient was required to post on this board 🙂

Pitt will be ranked soon enough…no need to rush. I predict Pitt will make it back to the Top Ten at sometime this season just like every season Dixon has been coach.

Comment by milo bloom 12.18.12 @ 10:32 am

The fact that we aren’t on tv and aren’t ranked added together allow us to be underestimated. That is a big improvement over big expectations without results. This team has the potential and the advantage of playing great conference competition. Milo’s prediction certainly could happen. This weekend proved to me that this season is wide open for a late developing team to steal more than just rankings. Duke as an example has earned its rankings, yet I can see them falling by the wayside in the second or third round of the dance. Our team as an example might fare well against a team that has the pressures of high expectations particularly if we could slow the pace and controll the tempo. They certainly don’t seem unbeatable.I like this work your way up the ladder aproach and think this could be a good season for us to make a nice climb. We are certainly not overanked at 27, and if we keep steadily improving this is likely to be a real memorable year..
