Open Thread: North Florida-Pitt

It’s another game. That means another open thread. One more reason to look forward to the start of Big East play. Games being aired on the Mouse Monopoly. Have to say that Root Sports really blew it. Not bothering to air any games. in the non-con. I get they aren’t the most inspiring match-ups but they are at least live sports. I guess they were actually banking on a NHL season.

We will see if Pitt can come out with a bit of energy and accuracy in their shots to start the game. Slow starts have been the disturbing norm in the past couple of weeks. Either they are coming out taking teams for granted or this is just a team that starts slow.

The opponent is North Florida. The Ospreys have played — and been soundly thrashed by — Pitt once before.  North Florida is an Atlantic Sun team living the non-con life as a rent-a-patsy. This will be their seventh road game in the season. They only play two home games in their non-con. Yeesh.

Robinson doesn’t make ESPN’s top 25 freshmen. A travesty.

What’s Pitt’s assist rank?

Comment by steve1 12.08.12 @ 6:37 pm

@steve1-Yea, not to surprising considering the morons doing these and other rankings contend that 6 points on a neutral floor to Michigan are the difference between being 27th and about 8th. Go figure.

Comment by Vulcan Rob 12.08.12 @ 6:58 pm

Watching on ESPN3… they just showed the football recruits in attendance…they look VERY bored :(

Comment by MikePITT 12.08.12 @ 7:17 pm

Apparently no one at ESPN watches ESPN3.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.08.12 @ 7:21 pm

Great find of Taylor underneath. That last three from the Ospreys has me grumbling right along with Dixon though.

Comment by pittbaster 12.08.12 @ 7:24 pm

Is Robinson finding his shot? If that part of his game comes along this year, the Panthers will be nasty.

Comment by pittbaster 12.08.12 @ 7:25 pm

Interesting, both Pitt and North Florida are shooting 9/18 and both are at 50% from behind the arc. The difference? Pitt has taken 2 3pt shots while North Fla has taken 10!

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.08.12 @ 7:27 pm

Pitt Dad, that’s a recipe for a Pitt W. That math says that Pitt is getting a lot more shots than North Florida, and 50% from 3 isn’t going to hold up if there’s a high volume of threes.

Comment by pittbaster 12.08.12 @ 7:28 pm

Erm, wait, correction on one point. Obviously same # of shots.

Comment by pittbaster 12.08.12 @ 7:29 pm

Where are all these off the ball fouls coming from?

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.08.12 @ 7:33 pm

Anyone else feel like the rush of fouls was the refs looking up and going “man, how’d we get this deep in a game without Pitt fouling”?

Comment by pittbaster 12.08.12 @ 7:36 pm

Pitt’s depth and size starting to get away from NoFla.

Comment by CNorwoodAZ 12.08.12 @ 7:37 pm

Nice block by Adams leading to Wright’s shot.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 12.08.12 @ 7:37 pm

Nice half….should be a blowout in the 2nd half as the 3’s quit falling for N Fla.

Comment by Jackagain 12.08.12 @ 7:46 pm

James Robinson is so good already, I’m excited to see what he can do against Big East teams.

Comment by Patric 12.08.12 @ 8:08 pm

Check out this score…UNC 37 ETSU 9 ouch

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:12 pm

ETSU is from the same conf as UNF.

The Atlantic Sun (Sum, as in sum on money for rent-a-win)

We have two more on these A-Sum teams to play.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:13 pm

Adams is looking a bit better at defense than he did at the start of the Duquesne game, he’s at 4 blocks so far.

Comment by Patric 12.08.12 @ 8:15 pm

My bad Bethune-Cookman is from the Mid-Eastern Conf.

But Kennesaw “Mountain” is from A-Sum.

Why no Robert Morris this year?

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:18 pm

Pitt outscoring the Ospreys 20 – 8 in 2nd half.

Jamie with his halftime adjustments again, lol

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:20 pm

Ziegler gets on the board.

3 players in doubles

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:22 pm

Sleepy hits 2

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:24 pm

Cameron Wright’s charge on a 3-on-1 fast break was the worst display of basketball IQ by a Panther this year.

Comment by MikePITT 12.08.12 @ 8:29 pm

Chryst just referred to his current school as Pitt University…….

Comment by MikePITT 12.08.12 @ 8:34 pm

Brain surgeons they’re not ! :-)

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:34 pm

UNF has yet to take a Foul Shot.

Rent-a-Win indeed, lol

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:36 pm

Oy Vey

Adams is shooting about 20% FT this year so far

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:38 pm

Wright into double figures.

He’s pretty good against these type of teams.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:39 pm

I liked the non-con last year, you had all the PA teams (well almost), Penn, LaSalle, Bobby Mo, Dukes

They should always try to get those 4.
Maybe Temple, Pedo State, St. Joe’s and Drexel, every other year or so.

It would be excellent for recruiting purposes.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:44 pm

This was a great team win for a number of reasons but I was particularly happy that we were able to realize success without having to shoot a significant number of 3-pointers. That’s been a trademark of our last few games and I’m glad we got away from it and used our size to get the ball inside the perimeter. H2P.

Comment by MikePITT 12.08.12 @ 8:47 pm

It’s obvious that Chryst gets nervous talking. He has to know we’re not referred to as Pitt University.

What a 2nd half!!

Comment by panther94 12.08.12 @ 8:48 pm

Sleepy with maybe career high 16 points.

5 players in doubles

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:48 pm

Good to see a good game from Taylor…a real team guy. Sooooo…who’s the next cupcake?

Comment by Jackagain 12.08.12 @ 8:49 pm

Emel — that’s Kennesaw University, Kennesaw, GA. Pitt better not take them too lightly, they beat GA Tech last year.

Comment by MariettaMike 12.08.12 @ 8:49 pm

Hey he could have called us:

University of Pitt

I like Pitt U myself if he’s going to screw up

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:49 pm

wow…a 48-17 pasting in the 2nd half.

Jamie’s halftime speeches must be getting good !

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:51 pm

marietta mike–of course you should never take any team for granted but we just blew out a team by 42 that is the equal of Oakland who we struggled against a couple of weeks back and which would be very competitive vs the bottom 3-4 teams in the Big East. Just to provide some perspective.

Comment by pitt1972 12.08.12 @ 8:56 pm

they must have lost some players, cause Kennesaw is a horrid 1-7 this year.

Yep I know it’s in Geooooowgia.

There was also the famous baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, he kicked Shoeless Joe Jackson out of baseball. Although Landis was from Ohio.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 8:57 pm

We’ve got lots of guys who can contribute. Let’s see how far it takes us.

I’m optimistic.

Comment by steve1 12.08.12 @ 9:03 pm

Any concern that JJ not scoring recently? FG% less than .300 the last 5 games. I think they are going to need his offense in conference.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.08.12 @ 9:05 pm

We’re sitting at #26 in USA/ESPN and #28 in AP polls. Need someone to lose cause we don’t play anyone to move us up unless someone from say #18 to #25 loses.

Would like to be ranked BEFORE we play Cincy on New Year’s Eve day, Dec. 31rst.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 9:07 pm

No problem Iron Duke.

Patterson’s numbers have gone up since JJ’s went down. Since they both play the same position.

It’s what we get combined from the two from the SF spot. We’re averaging 19 ppg from that spot now.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 9:10 pm

I don’t take much stock in any rankings at this point of the year, but I like what was posted here:

link to

“The Panthers are one of the most unselfish teams in college basketball. Their 19.3 assists per game rank second nationally.”

Comment by BATR 12.08.12 @ 9:13 pm

Anyone here interested in the Pacman fight tonight?

Comment by Jackagain 12.08.12 @ 9:13 pm

This might be the deepest Pitt team I’ve ever seen. It’s incredible.

Comment by PatMac 12.08.12 @ 9:21 pm

Nice BATR.

Let’s send that to all the USA/ESPN & AP poll voters. They haven’t given us much respect, considering our one loss was by only 5 points to the #3 team in their polls. (and that game was still up for grabs with a minute to go, judgemental officiating to boot)

And after a decade of excellence we deserve more respect than that.

I’d like to be in that Top 22-23 area before #11 Cincy, cause when we beat them, we can vault up that much farther. If we’re not ranked they’ll just stick us in around 21 or 22. We should have been in around 22 or 23 after the Mich game. Any other Top Program would have.

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 9:23 pm

Nice game. Pitt had more second half points than NFLA had for the whole game.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.08.12 @ 9:23 pm

This game despite the hype didn’t draw diddly.

Big Bad Texas, even has some chinks in their armor as far as drawing people. Despite the AD money, you still have to win on the court/field.
The Little 11 should be more concerned about that than increasing their “eyeballs”. More eyeballs watching means more embarrassment on the football field. lol

From Yahoo/Rivals:

The game was played at Reliant Stadium, home to the NFL’s Houston Texans, as part of a Texas-UCLA men’s and women’s doubleheader billed as the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Showcase. Despite a tight game and a wild finish, the nationally-televised game struggled to live up to its preseason hype between the now unranked teams, and was played in front of an announced crowd of 2,797.

(the game pics showed almost no one in the stands, so 2800 was a real stretch)

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 9:45 pm

True Emel. I haven’t seen any of the last 3 games, so not sure if he’s getting good looks and just not falling or if he is forcing. If he were 1-2, ok but 1-9 vs. Dukes and 1-5 tonite. Nitpicking I guess.

Nice thing about hoops vs. football, rankings don’t matter. Have always felt Pitt doesn’t get deserved respect from national media; but frankly they won’t until the reach and/or win one or more Final 4s. They are still not viewed as being in the Blue Blood Club (Duke, UNC, UK, Kansas, UConn, Cuse).

Comment by Iron Duke 12.08.12 @ 9:50 pm

Pitt’s 2nd half of 48-17 was impressive as UNC’s first half against ETSU of 42-12.

As both opponents are about on par. Same rent-a-win league. The A-Sum.

So nothing to be ashamed of folks, if the great North Carolina Tarheels can schedule these games, so can we. By the way Syracuse was hosting Monmouth. A Sum was paid to many tonight ! lol

Comment by Emel 12.08.12 @ 9:51 pm

Post Gazette: Pitt holds off North Florida…

What? Do they just pick randomly from a list of words/terms for winning?

Comment by panther94 12.08.12 @ 11:00 pm

@panther94: While I agree that the choice of headline is questionable, we were up a mere 11 points at halftime to a team we should have blown out from start to finish. Insofar as the game was ‘somewhat’ close to begin with, I’d say

Last time I looked, every game starts 0-0. Maybe the PG forgot, seeing that they are in the process of sanctifying the Immaculate Reception by that great defender of pedophile protectors, Sir Funko Harris.
Listened to the game. Sounded like we got aggressive and went for the jugular!

That is a bunch of points to give up.
12 in 1st half
43 in 2nd

Comment by SFPitt 12.09.12 @ 3:04 am

I guess, the solution to Paul Chryst’s “Pitt University” statement and ESPN calling us “Pittsburgh”, is to make things simple. To formally change the name to Pitt. Princeton did a similar thing about 10 year ago. In Princeton’s case the name of the school was actually, “The College of New Jersey”. However it’s located in the town of Princeton and everyone just called it Princeton. So about 10 years ago they offically changed the name. As soon as they did Trenton State took the name. Duke was origionally “Trinity” and they changed their name to Duke, when wealthy magnate Duke offered to build them a new campus.
Hey after all Pitt’s origional name, before it was changed to the University of Pittsburgh was the University of Western Pennsylvania. It would be live the Ivy league school the University of Pennsylvania who everyone calls Penn. Besides who want to say we played a basketball game at the University of Pennsylvania Palestra!

Comment by Justinian 12.09.12 @ 7:24 am

Wright is playing out of his mind. I really thought he was the odd man out. Only JJ Moore is playing below par right now. Recruits seem to have a good time and liked the Zoo. Chryst spent most of the first half talking with one of the moms. Shell looks like an excellent host.

Comment by RayHpgh 12.09.12 @ 9:48 am

what recruits were at the game last night? i was there and i’ll say it was one of the weakest showings by the zoo and the fans i’ve ever seen in person. by far the loudest the crowd was all night was when they showed chryst on the jumbotron and he got a half standing ovation… so that might bode well for some of the recruits

Comment by usd121 12.09.12 @ 10:16 am

I was at the game too and it looked like a ghost town. I usually go to conference games where the place is rocking. I still enjoyed the game even though the crowd was space. Got a good look at Robinson. He plays under control so well for a freshman

Comment by Gdodson 12.09.12 @ 11:04 am

Sparse not space

Comment by Gdodson 12.09.12 @ 11:06 am

when you bring recruits to a game you should be playing some one good not a cup cake then the place would be rocking.
the football side should correlate with the BB
side so that these things are connected and not

that way they would be observingwhat you want them to see it just needs to be organized

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.09.12 @ 11:36 am

usd, it’s the beginning of finals week. You have to expect a weak showing from the students-especially when the opponent is an outmatched North Florida squad.

Comment by PatMac 12.09.12 @ 12:00 pm

PATMAC yes that is right should have been organized better dates changed.
they need to plan these things ahead of time football needs to talk to BB maybe next year they
get on same page.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.09.12 @ 1:32 pm

Off topic, but did anyone see the video interview in the Trib yesterday on Tra’von Chapman?

Is this kid for real? I thought this guy was a senior in high school. I would be hard-pressed to find a more articulate student athlete at the high school level. This is going to be the real deal with this kid.

Between him and Voytik I think we have two great options for our future quarterbacks, long term.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.09.12 @ 2:16 pm

Cameron Wright really showing results from his summer of hard work. JJ pressing a bit offensively but bringing the D and rebounding. Much love for Dante Taylor. Never got his head down or cried about his knees. Now he’s playing like a senior. Thanks DT! Only wonder how Zeigler fits. Seems lost at times. Zeigs “scorer” rep seems to have stayed @ Cent. Mich! UPone

Comment by UPone 12.09.12 @ 2:57 pm

Yes Dr. Tom, Tra’von is one focused man.

And talk about a recruiting video, no spin doctor (sorry!) could even come close.

Comment by steve1 12.09.12 @ 3:03 pm

lol maybe he can be on the Pitt debating squad as well Doc.

“Pitt holds off North Florida”
As for the Post Gazette. F*ck em.

When are you guys going to learn, they are anti-Pitt. Have been for many moons. Best way to get back at them, is not to buy their rag sheet, nor subscribe to that PG plus garbage sports blog.
Their reporting and writing of sports articles is sophomoric at best. Among the worst written sports article I’ve ever read. I don’t even bother with their website anymore, it sucks worse now after the re-design. Does anyone really care about the dinosaur that is print news anymore.

It’s a dying industry and a dying newspaper. And they are creeps just like their favs up in Creepy Valley. They deserve each other.

UPMC should just buy the POS and close it down !
Since they’re always running polls suggesting UPMC is a monopoly. Then they could all move to Creepy Valley and write for the Pedo Daily News.

Comment by Emel 12.09.12 @ 3:07 pm

PG has been pro PSU since the 60s.

Comment by frank MD 12.09.12 @ 3:18 pm

Emel, now take the gloves off and tell us how you REALLY feel about the Gazette now, all politeness aside.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.09.12 @ 3:40 pm

I am always amazed how dramatically players improve under Jamie Dixon. Last year Cameron Wright looked like a guy who could defend but really wouldn’t be a factor ofensively. The difference in his play from last year to this year is remarkable. I remember the same could be said with Brad Wanamaker who improved in the same manner, from his 1st to 2n year. Wright obviously worked hard in the off season and it’s paying dividends this year.

Comment by Justinian 12.09.12 @ 5:50 pm

I’m also exited about Pitt football next season and the next few years. Yes, for the first time in 3 years, the Panthers will be coming into spring football with the same system that they ran in the autumn season. AND they will have the same head coach and the same coaching staff! Good stuff.

Comment by Justinian 12.09.12 @ 5:59 pm

I’m with you Justinian, I’m buying an extra season ticket to show my support.

Comment by Moe Greene 12.09.12 @ 7:46 pm

Yea I was feeling kinda congenial today Doc. You know how Sundays are…..kinda laid back.

I was a little surprised the bench didn’t get emptied last night, with the last 2 guys on it getting some PT. Those being Aron Nwankwo & Mike Lecak, as we don’t often have such a huge lead against an obviously over matched team. As these guys practice every day and need a little reward of some real game court time. Plus the fans love it.

Attendance has started to go down every year at all these non-con games which is kind of startling. Who exactly are the fans coming out to see, their own team, PITT (which they should be doing) or do some of them (a growing number) only show up when certain teams are at The Pete.
Some of them don’t even show up for certain BigEast teams !

That’s lame, they should give them up to people would absolutely LOVE TO ATTEND ANY PANTHER GAME !

Comment by Emel 12.09.12 @ 8:55 pm

Agree Justinian,

Very excited about next year’s football team, especially since we’ll have a new QB under Center for the first time since 2009. Seems like eons ago.

Oh the agony, the agony. lol

P.S. would be more excited if we land Foster & Boyd and another good lineman & scatback.

Comment by Emel 12.09.12 @ 8:59 pm

Emel,I’m with you on that one. Let’s hope it happens. I think a lot of people are up-beat about next year. Here’s to Foster and Boyd becoming Pitt Panthers.

Comment by Justinian 12.09.12 @ 9:06 pm

Would like to get a better understanding of early enrollment. I have heard that Orndorf, Chapman and Soto will join early which is awesome! Any others?

How will the number of scholarships be affected? A recruiting update mid-week would be awesome with early enrollees accounted for. When is the date for early enrollees to begn class? This recruiting season is exciting on its own just because we have the same coach….Hopefully he can close out strong. Class right now is good, but it could turn to really good, very soon.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 12.09.12 @ 9:30 pm

Emel — I don’t know what’s going on with the walk-ons, but Lecak hasn’t even dressed for a game yet. And I’m almost positive I heard someone say Nwankwo may redshirt, which seems crazy considering he’s a walk-on. But that may certainly be a reason we haven’t seen any “scrubs” in at garbage time. Plus, since we go 10 deep now with decent quality, there’s more minutes to spread around!

Comment by JW 12.09.12 @ 9:37 pm

Also, I don’t think the Post-Gazette is anti-Pitt. The Pitt News has a mentor program with them, and there’s also a summer internship program with them funded by The Heinz Endowment and Pitt’s English Department.

Comment by PatMac 12.09.12 @ 10:38 pm

Jamie Dixon mentioned in his post game press conference that Nwankwo and the Lecak are both redshirting this year.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 12.09.12 @ 11:38 pm

Count me among the season ticket holders who abhor the all too soft pre-conference schedule.
Actually, I split with two other guys (we all have kids) and my job is to equitably divide the tickets between us.
First, the Duquesne game is not part of the package. It should be added to the first “x” number of thousand who submit their applications based on FIFO. That would help everyone.
Next, there are only so many patsies that will hold your interest. RMU was dropped from the schedule. At least they were local and add to the interest.
I know Jamie doesn’t want to lose and I know PSU pu$$ied out when DeChellis cried “Uncle”, but if RMU can play Ohio U, can’t we? There are other schools in PA (Philly) who play basketball. I know, I lived there. Are we afraid of losing to LaSalle, St. Joe’s, Temple, Penn (we went there last year).
Bottom line is that many of these games are glorified practices. I can handle some, but not an entire schedule of scooby snacks.

Comment by sfpitt 12.10.12 @ 7:17 am

When I can’t make a BB game, I try my best to give my 2 tickets away and many times I fail. Not many people wants tickets to these early “practice” games.

Comment by rayhpgh 12.10.12 @ 8:24 am

I heard RMU wasn’t part of this year’s schedule due to the NIT. Since there was a chance Pitt could have played them in the NIT if they beat Lehigh they wouldn’t want to play the game twice.

Comment by Twink 12.10.12 @ 8:39 am

A nice article on Dante Taylor … a player I think really has taken too much heat for not living up to expectations. I’ve never heard a bad thing about him from his teammates or coaches … and this just reinforces it.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.10.12 @ 9:11 am

Agree that this was a good article about Dante Taylor. A good guy that had alot of hype but never got to the next level(sorta like Cam Sadler who is a good player but never seemed to get better). Love the name sleepy for Dante-always cracks me up when I see him because he just seems to look like he needs a nap. Hail to Pitt !!!!!!!!

Comment by Bruce F 12.10.12 @ 9:31 am

I go to all but a couple of the games each year and when I don’t go I try to give to somebody who will use so my seats are almost always used.

However more than once I have seats next to me that sat empty for almost every game the entire season except the major BE games..(makes a nice coat holder)…The guy who had them one year had them lived near Columbus and had 8 tickets total and they gave him 6 in a little better section and then 2 next to me.
A lot of the tickets are owned by companies as well and they don’t really care if they get used or not when they give them to clients.

Comment by milobloom 12.10.12 @ 9:33 am

If Robert Morris would have beat Lehigh in the NIT then they would have advanced to play us the next night. The game that needs to be on the schedule every year is WVU. The reson given for not playing the Hoopies is that we need the home revenue but I would rather play Duquesne every other year and play WVU.This game has as much history and is certainly more competitive. We have enough walkover games and the Dukes are no longer relavent.I’m a season ticket holder and wonder if anyone at Pitt ever considers the fans when making out the schedule.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.10.12 @ 10:06 am

how about a program to give unused tix to local schools, after-school programs, etc.?

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.10.12 @ 10:15 am

Pitt has a link on their site to donate tickets..assuming most don’t do that. I beleive they go to local schools and charities though not sure which ones.

I will say this though..for those without season tickets who want to see the place filled more, come down and buy the extra seats that are almost always on sale for these non conf games…especially the next three game when the students are on break. The Cinncy game may not that be hard to get seats either since it is on New Years Eve and again no students.

Comment by milobloom 12.10.12 @ 10:27 am

How about schedule somebody worth watching so those buying the tickets actually get what they paid for.I bet the Cincinatti game will be packed even without a full contngent of students.Charity is wonderful, but even the indegent don’t want to see us thump some nobody ten games in a row.I ask again does anyone at Pitt consider the fans when they schedule?

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.10.12 @ 10:37 am

PENN STATE had 3 players commit over the week end

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.10.12 @ 11:04 am

As long as there is waiting list for season tickets they won’t consider fans when making the schedule….no real use complaining about it because it ain’t going to change..and as has been mentioned many times on this board it isn’t much differnet than what other programs are doing.

Not like Pitt can go out and just pick another top program to play at Pitt…very hard to find another team to do it because most are doing the same thing as Pitt.

Comment by milobloom 12.10.12 @ 11:10 am

Every game I’ve been to, the same two seats next to me have been empty. Disappointing.
That said, there’s been two games I couldn’t make, or give away, and I still ended up selling them on StubHub for $6 and $8 a seat respectively. (Better than nothing!) So the demand is still there. Like milobloom said, as long as the tickets are still being bought and waited for, I don’t expect great change.

Comment by JW 12.10.12 @ 11:17 am

This pre-season is the result of a number of things, but we sholdnt be too upset as if someone (Dixon, Pederson, the BE ?) has done us a great injustice. It sounds like you guys want to blame someone for the fact that we were screwed out of the SEC challenge. If we got into that we would have ended up with upto 3 games against top-25 teams (Mich + 1 or 2 in SEC). That’s probably all it would have taken for fans to be satisfied. (actually Pitt fans are never satisfied).

Count me as someone who sees the early non-conf schedule as pretty much meaningless. What good has it done anyone ever to have played good games before their conference schedule? Its nice to see good competition early but purely for fun, it has had no relevance to our post-season odds in my lifetime. But I guess we have to be upset about something.

ESPN Big East Power Rankings

Pitt is sixth, which is ABOUT right, for now. Pitt has more potential and I expect them to be in third before too long, after beating Cinci.

The best part of the rankings, Villanova is dead assed last!!!! Dana O’Neal describes them as a “mess”. Awesome.

The non-con schedule is embarrassing. As a season ticket holder, I have been to all but one game, but totally understand why others have stayed away in droves. In some ways, Pitt is a victim of their own success. Rarely do any of the non-cons put up much of a fight. There isn’t any excitement, the fan base has come to expect a Pitt beat down of an inferior opponent.

And while this could be called putting lipstick on a pig, Pitt could do a better job of selling those games. I had no idea how good Ray McCallum was until I got to the game. I knew that Lehigh was good and that they had a NBA prospect, but had no idea how good. And I follow this stuff closely. Jamie has gotten better at being the front man for the program, but he still has a long way to go. And Pitt should be more aggressive in getting the word out and building a buzz.

Going forward, Pitt should try to maintain the rivalry with 1 or more of the big east basketball only catholic schools. Villanova would be a good choice. Good brand name, good historical rivalry (Scottie Reynolds still haunts me) and great location. Philly is very important for recruiting. The question is would Nova agree to a home and home? If not, go down the list, Georgetown, St. John’s and Seton Hall would all be choices. WVU could also be a consideration, and Huggy bear would agree to it in heartbeat.

We have played WVU every year for the past 40 I’ve been watching and I will miss the rivalry and drama of the backyard brawl.

Have you all been keeping up with the coaching
carousel that has been goining on?
i saw a lot of good hires like tommy tuberville to cincinati.
but the the hire that i think stinks is steve
addazio to boston college i mean he won just 4 games this year with temple.

the big east gets tuberville and the ACC gets
addazio i think boston jumped the gun on there hire or maybe they did not want to pay the money
for a good hire.
