Open Thread: City Game 2012

Ugh. One of those days where there was too much to do and not enough time. Add in the Coaching Carousel craziness and keeping an eye out for the next disaster and it has been a day.

So the City Game tonight should be a welcome distraction. Even if I’ve done zilch to talk about it.

Gametime is 7pm at the Con. Being shown on ESPN3.com.

We’ll see how the front court does tonight. We all know a zone is coming. Will it take them nearly a half to adjust or will they bust it right away?

Can not believe this game is not on local tv, only espn3. Would think ROOT would have picked it up, shows lack of bball interest in this town.

Comment by Jimbo 12.05.12 @ 6:51 pm

What a disservice by the local media in Pittsburgh, not to have The City Game on at least local TV.

What are they showing instead, Cheers, Friends, REal Housewives of NJ or I Love Lucy reruns ?

Let’s Go Pitt !
Beat the Dukes !

Comment by Emel 12.05.12 @ 7:03 pm

Certainly a needed distraction from our annual holiday coaching carousel garbage.

Comment by Emel 12.05.12 @ 7:04 pm

I’m actually happy it is on ESPN3…I am in NW Ohio for business and likely wouldn’t have access to the game otherwise

Comment by BCPITT 12.05.12 @ 7:23 pm

Adams doing his best Aaron Gray impersonation…missing easy layups and getting his own rebound 2 or 3 times in a row

Comment by BCPITT 12.05.12 @ 7:29 pm

Duquesne played man early.

Comment by SFPitt 12.05.12 @ 7:38 pm

Adams having a career night.

Comment by Lou 12.05.12 @ 8:40 pm

This game was a much needed diversion from all that football talk.

Comment by TX Panther 12.05.12 @ 8:45 pm

Hard to follow on ESPN3 for me (poor quality tonight) but seemed to be a solid game. Shot well from 3. Adams on the boards. Not much from the bench tonight interestingly.

Comment by JAM 05 Pitt 12.05.12 @ 8:58 pm

@JAM, fwiw, when that happens, I click off the site, and reload it, and most of the time, comes back good.

Also, noticed this, I make sure I have all other windows closed.

A computer geek may tell me that has nothing to do with it. Just saying what I do. And it comes back perfect.

Comment by Dan 12.05.12 @ 9:05 pm

Seriously what is up with Root? They uses to carry most non-national Pitt games. You would think a no brainier this year with no Hockey.

Comment by Iron Duke 12.05.12 @ 9:06 pm

Oh, I have FIOS wireless. Usually comes on distorted for about 20 seconds, then picture is excellent.

Just don’t like sitting in front of the computer watching it, don’t have a lazy boy there!! LOL

Comment by Dan 12.05.12 @ 9:07 pm

Good win Pitt! Woodall breakout and Adams close yo a double double!

Comment by Pitt it Is 12.05.12 @ 9:08 pm

lets hope adams can build on this…

Comment by Snala The Panther 12.05.12 @ 10:41 pm

Being old school….I love still beating the Dukes.
As I used to go to the game all the time with one of my old DU GF’s who lived in Cricklewood. lol

Which rhymes with tickle __ wood.

Those were the days my friends, I’d thought they never end…….

Hail to Pitt !
Veritas et Virtus !
GRP !

Ferry said Pitt looked better than G-Town who they took into ot earlier in the yr.

Comment by alcofan 12.05.12 @ 10:54 pm

Was surprised to see Ziegler back so soon. Figured that Dixon would’ve kept him benched longer.

Comment by MikePITT 12.06.12 @ 12:08 am

We seemed like we could lose to half the big east tonight; however, I think we got better tonight and I think that’s going to happen throughout the year. We’ll be on the rise in March.

Comment by panther94 12.06.12 @ 12:36 am

Does anyone have pg+ ? What about Ferry calling out Pitt and WV?

Comment by panther94 12.06.12 @ 12:40 am

Had to listen to the game on the radio, which gets more and more painful as Hilgrove gets older and older(Groat is already the walking dead, so I don’t expect much from him).

In the first half especially, sounded like there were a lot of quick shots, particularly long balls, and that Pitt was lucky Duquesne was equally as terrible with its shooting.

Good for Adams to have a strong game, particularly on the boards.

Against better competition going to need Moore and Ziegler to make substantial contributions.

Comment by Carmen 12.06.12 @ 8:04 am

Last night’s game wasn’t even as close as the score indicated. Pitt missed a lot of easy hoops including a stretch where Adams got his own rebound under the hoop about 3 straight times and still failed to slam it home and score. The poor performance from the bench didn’t matter because Adams showed up. It’s pretty clear to me that the fate of the team in March is tied to the progress of Adams. He just needs to keep grinding and getting better little by little.

Ferry said shame on both WVU and Pitt for not playing every year.

Dixon said Pitt can’t schedule home and away series in basketball because of the budget. I’ll ignore the fact that they have in the past. But even if that’s true, once Pitt is in the ACC revenue increases a bunch, which means home and away series are back. Although, I’d take a home and away against a teams such as Georgetown before WVU. You’d think Dixon would also be able to convince Callipari to bring his team back to his hometown area once in a while.

Comment by Wardapalooza 12.06.12 @ 8:29 am

Thanks for that info Wardapalooza.

Comment by panther94 12.06.12 @ 8:32 am

As far as no home and away because of budget..as a season ticket holder I would have no problem paying a little more for my ticket to see at least one decent game before Jan.
I think Dixon said even when they go to the ACC they still won’t be able to home and away because of the expanded conference schedules…(18 games).

Comment by milobloom 12.06.12 @ 8:38 am

Most of the big games that you see aren’t home and away. They are in some kind of tournament of a conference challenge (e.g. big ten-acc). There are very few home and away matchups even amongst the biggest teams. Most of Duke’s big games have come in some sort of tourney or one of the challenges.

Comment by omar 12.06.12 @ 10:00 am

Too busy to do the research right now, but I’m sure I’ve seen other top 20 teams, and for that matter, any other Div 1 basketball programs have home and home series with each other.

Not just the pre season NIT’s or Maui Invitationals either.

And we can’t??????????

Comment by Dan 12.06.12 @ 10:00 am

Maybe I’m wrong????

Comment by Dan 12.06.12 @ 10:07 am

Supposedly we can’t schedule home and away because we can’t afford to lose the home game revenue. What about what the people providing that revenue might like to see,is that ever a consideration as we no longer see WVU and and can’t even see the Duquesne game unless we buy a ticket. I have season tickets and I am starting to feel a little abused.

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.06.12 @ 10:23 am

Spirit of…totally agree.
But Pitt is just doing what all the other schools are doing ..Syracuse has one true nonconf away game and that was BE SEC challenge. UConn has none…Cinn has one away game at Marshall.
ND none..Now NorthCarolina goes to Texas and Long Beach St..along with ACC/B10 challenge and Maui but they probably get quite a bit more money for each of their home games that allows them to do that.
WVU plays a number of away games as well..they only play 5 nonconf games in Morgantown..not sure how they make it work.

Comment by milobloom 12.06.12 @ 10:50 am

Dan, Chas and I had a discussion about other non-con schedules before. Basically, a lot of the schedules are bad like Pitt’s.

Comment by Wardapalooza 12.06.12 @ 11:48 am

You guys are right.

Allthough, just tonight, Xavier hosted Vanderbilt in Cincinnati. Checked on it when I saw it. Vanderbilt did in fact host Xavier last year.

I just happened to be flipping the remote, 1st one I came too.

Not arguing with you or being sarcastic. I do believe you are correct.

Most schools are that way.

I wonder what changed. Just the budgets getting tighter???

We had home and homes with Wisconsin, Ohio State, Washington and Georgia as recently as 04, 5, 6, 7.

Allthough I agree with you, some teams still do it, so, I fall in the category of spiritofsection22.

How about taking a little hit one year and throwing us a bone.

Been pretty loyal hoops fans for the last 12 years at the Pete, and many of before that.

Hey, charge me double for that one game. I’d pay double for that one game against a top 20 power conference team.

Built in excuse next year with the move to the ACC.

“Well, we have Duke and NC State and Wake Forest and Virginia coming in.”

Ya, we know, but those are conference games now.

Hey, I don’t much to bitch about Pitt hoops for the last 12 years.

That’s the one thing.
