Blast From the Past: Jerry McCullough

Here’s something to note. Jerry McCullough, who came to Pitt during the downside of the Paul Evans era, is now coaching high school prep basketball in Massachusetts. He seems to be making an impact.

MacDuffie may not have that same pedigree, but second-year coach Jerry McCullough believes the Mustangs can compete now for Class AA hardware.

“I do — that’s why we play,” McCullough said with a chuckle. “Realistically, it’s going to be very challenging for us to do that. We want to improve and grow with the school.”

McCullough, who played under Paul Evans at the University of Pittsburgh before a professional career in the U.S. and Europe, brought the Granby school to the Class D championship game in his first season.

MacDuffie entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed and was unbeaten against Class D opponents before falling to Hoosac in the final.

Now the Mustangs are making the jump from NEPSAC’s lowest division to its second highest. Only Class AAA is higher, with schools like Brewster Academy, New Hampton Prep, Northfield Mt. Hermon and St. Thomas More, programs that churn out Division I recruits on a yearly basis.

McCullough was playing in Italy, as recently as 2009 (he’s even got a small entry on the Italian Wikipedia). He seems to have made a quick adjustment from the end of his playing career.

McCullough has had an influx of potential Division I level players who want to play for him, which necessitated the jump in divisions. We may be reading more about his program and his players in the coming months or years.

I always enjoy reading about past Panthers – a “where are they now perspective”. Thank you.

And good luck to Jerry. Maybe he can guide a recruit or two our way…

I always liked Jerry. He had a tough end to his career, getting injured and having all the kids he came in with graduate/leave and a coaching change.

I used to play pick up games at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse and he was there rehabbing and working out by himself one time and we shot threes together for a long time. Nice guy and #5 was always my number too.

Glad to hear he is having success.

Comment by PittDan 11.21.12 @ 9:29 am

I’ve seen a lot of good players over the years at Pitt, but I never saw anyone who could strip the ball from an opponent like Jerry McCullough. He had remarkably quick reflexes and the quickest hands of anyone to ever wear a Panther uniform.

Comment by Justinian 11.21.12 @ 9:45 am

Real nice guy … poured him a beer at Peters once because it was taking forever for him to get served. A few weeks later we were in North Oakland somewhere and he bought a round of shots for my table.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.21.12 @ 10:16 am

I remember that he had a bunch of heart but he took more ill-advised shots than anyone else I can remember in a Panther uniform. I undoubtedly swore when using his name more than I do with Tino!

Anyway, support to a former Panther and good luck!

chas yesterday you said you would be back with a post on the ACC and maryland i wanted to hear your thoughts but you did not post agein on that and is reed ok he has not posted for some time.

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.21.12 @ 10:53 am

KeyboardKev – I remember him driving to the hoop and always getting to the rim but not being able to finish – arghh! We didn’t swear too much when Mobley was jamming it back in but all the other times it was frustrating.

McCullough and Mobley ran at least two alley oops per game. Pretty much the highlight of that era.

Comment by PittDan 11.21.12 @ 11:01 am

FRANKCAN: Reed posted yesterday in the mess that was the MD-B1G post, I do miss seeing his pieces through.

But I agree, I was hoping to see something else this morning.

Maybe even something about basketball… you know… since we are playing the #5 team in the country tonight.

Comment by Benzene 11.21.12 @ 11:30 am

Did you see…. Butler beat UNC last night…

Comment by Joe D 11.21.12 @ 11:46 am

Eric Mobley’s dunk-to-“non”dunk field goal ratio was astronomical.

Comment by JW 11.21.12 @ 12:02 pm

Carolina almost came back from a 29 point 2nd half deficit in that game, got to within 6 points late in the game, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Very entertaining game. Hey didn’t PITT beat Butler in the CIB thing last year at Butler.

Nice to see Ice doing well. He was very entertaining as well.

Comment by Emel 11.21.12 @ 12:34 pm

Benzene yes i am with you on that.

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.21.12 @ 1:41 pm

Interesting observation vis-a-vis tonight’s game – Pitt has a different leader in each of the 5 main stat categories (points, assists, rebounds, blocks, steals), Michigan has only 2 (it’s either Burke or Hardaway, Jr.).

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.21.12 @ 2:20 pm

Like Pitt’s chances tonight, especially getting 2.5 points.

Got my kids out of school early today so we could be at Grandma’s house in time for tipoff.

Moore and Zanna will combine for 30 points and 10 rbs. Expect Adams to bounce back too, with 10 and 12.

Pitt 78, Michigan 74 and Boubabcar 7 Sierra Nevada’s.

SOME of you poted yester day that acc should go after penn state i said you were nuts.
but today i have been on some penn state sites one as recent as nov 10 and i will say this there fans are down on the big 10 dont think that means any thing but it does not seam as far fetched to day as it did yesterday.

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.21.12 @ 2:38 pm

lol Boubacar

I like all parts of that score.

I started drinking again with all the conf. realignment talk again, lol Deciding between Bakers Bourbon (107) or 100 proof Vodka.

The one you can drink over the rocks, the other is better with a mixer. And would require me leaving the domain to fetch it. We shall see.

Comment by Emel 11.21.12 @ 2:40 pm

This from a Wisconsin site;

Delany appeared to characterize the conference’s football woes as a short-term concern, as something that could be attributed to an influx of new coaches and the consequences of immoral behavior at Penn State and Ohio State. He made no real acknowledgement of the long-term statistics, of the Big Ten’s 34-52 bowl record since 2000, of the fact that the Big Ten has won 37 percent of its nonconference games against nationally ranked teams since Ohio State won the national championship in 2002. The top of the conference is largely shaky, and the bottom has never been worse: I imagine Purdue and Minnesota and Illinois would struggle to finish .500 in the MAC.

@Frankcan

The point with trying to solidify a conference is you don’t add 2nd rate schools. imo That is what the BigLeast has been doing, how’s that working out for them.

Swofford just landed a whale (even if it’s not been totally reeled in yet) in Notre Dame. Obviously this really worked on Swoffords old classmate at North Carolina psyche, that being Delaney as he is one of these Master of the World types. If you read the above article, you’ll get the idea as Delaney at Age 64 just climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He was not going to let Swofford outdo him. So he went after one of Swofford’s chess pieces, even though it was a pawn, lol.
It’s still a piece on the board.

So I would suggest, why replace a pawn with another pawn, go after a Queen, Bishop or Rook.

That’s how you win in chess.

Comment by Emel 11.21.12 @ 2:57 pm

@Emel – thanks for the link. I particulary liked the geographic representations of which state develop the most football talent and blue chip prospects. Seems like the ACC footprint is good in that respect.

Comment by Pitt Dad 11.21.12 @ 3:02 pm

it would be nice to add penn state but i will still have to see it to belive it.
but i would be glad to be wrong
vodka go get it it is a good time of year to drink orange juice vitiam c and all to fight colds

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.21.12 @ 3:11 pm

lol yes OJ is good, I just can’t keep drinking it continually.

was on the two big Texas sites, Orangebloods and burntOrange. This from Orangebloods:

Keep your ears open for rumblings out of the SEC about a push that could include Alabama with support from Texas A&M and Missouri to get Florida and Georgia to relent on their opposition to adding Florida State and Georgia Tech.

Louisville has been ringing the Big 12’s doorbell since realignment started, but now could be a candidate to replace Maryland in the ACC. The Big 12 has done studies that show schools such as Louisville and Cincinnati don’t move the meter enough in terms of television, so there is no interest in those additions at this time.

The ACC outfoxed the Big 12 to get Notre Dame. Could the SEC outfox the Big 12 to get Florida State and Georgia Tech?

Would the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets be open to such moves?

The fact that we are even asking these questions tells you that realignment is back and everyone better be on their toes.

Q: You often mention it, but as a Clevelander I have a question that I can’t figure out: WHY does God hate Cleveland? What did we do to deserve SIX DECADES of nightmarish failure across all major sports? Are we simply unlucky, or is God just a dick?
—Daniel, Cleveland

SG: I guess the silver lining is that we’ve narrowed it down to those two choices, right?

Comment by Emel 11.21.12 @ 4:01 pm

Swing for the fences even if it is unrealistic. Go after a disgruntled and dishonored PSU to convince ND to join full time. Then go after Navy for football only (they wouldn’t want to compete in basketball anyways) and G-Town as the one and only basketball only school. Navy and G-Town together make up the loss of the MD market. One basketball only school would not cause trouble. Go big – the L’Villes and UCONN’s will always be there and are not upgrades over MD – just par for the course. If you want to make a statement, go bigger than what you just lost.

Prediction for Pitt v Michigan game…

If Dixon uses 9-10 player rotation and no player gets over 30minutes…
Pitt wins…

If Woodall shoots more than 10shots.. Pitt loses.

Comment by Joe D 11.21.12 @ 5:56 pm

Both Dixon and Robinson will play over 30 minutes and Woodall will shoot more than 10 times. He’ll rotate the front court on a regular basis but Durand and Wright will only play spot duty.

You’re in for a long season Joe D if you don’t jump on the Woodall bandwagon – He’s Dixon go to guy this year and the one who he is running the offense through … and it’s not going to change anytime soon.

dont you wonder abought this the big 12 wanted
us before they took wvu.
the sec has us in there top 6 schools if they expand. and the acc took us.
but the big ten never cared abought us did not want us.

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.21.12 @ 7:13 pm

Tossing Thabeets — see you point about Joe D. My God, he acts like Woodall is Yuri Demetris.

Brandin Knight shot 30% from three his senior year and his jersey is retired. There’s more to being a great point guard than shooting percentage.

Comment by Denny 11.21.12 @ 7:21 pm

Tell me about it Pauly.

Comment by panther94 11.21.12 @ 7:47 pm

@panther94 I was a 95 grad. Ugly. I remember drinking with the entire football team the night before games at Charlies in North Oakland. It was a joke. As Pitt has been in the “rip your heart out” factor…I never want to go back to those days!

Comment by Pauly P 11.21.12 @ 8:10 pm

Mmm…. Charlies, best cheese steaks west of Philly… I had a bunch of friends who worked there and would meet them for drinks at Mitchels down stairs after they got off. 98′ grad … Had to go 5 years to see a bowl … And it took like 5 ot’s against wvu to get there.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.21.12 @ 8:31 pm

I will forever remember McCullough getting an inbound after Miami stayed in the timeout too long. It took a ref with balls to start the 5 count, but McCollough jumped on the chance to inbound the ball after the “turnover” and lead Pitt to a close road win.

Comment by SFPitt 11.21.12 @ 8:33 pm

Pauly, maybe you were the problem…getting the team hammered the night before games. lol

Comment by panther94 11.21.12 @ 8:38 pm

McCollough was definitely one of my favorite players. He had big shoes to fill too.

Comment by panther94 11.21.12 @ 8:42 pm

SFPitt … my fraternity had an event the night before that game. The Miami players were drinking and hitting on all of our dates. We took full credit for Miami being too hung over to come out of the timeout. Some players were still up at sunrise … good times. I’ve tried to find a clip on the internet with no luck … made SportsCenter.

That is a classic! Hey, alcohol stays in the system a long time. My memory is playing tricks on me so thanks for the prelude tale. I had never seen that before in a game and I’ve not seen it happen since.

Comment by SFPitt 11.21.12 @ 9:25 pm

No problem SFPitt … I remember when we first got Green Tree. I was in the elevator with a duffle bag full of beer bottles and a dude who could barely fit in the elevator looks at me and asks where we’ll be at. Fun night – the Miami team was cool too. No issues … but I still say we contributed to a rare mid-90’s BE victory. panther94, we may have crossed paths then … we weren’t very exclusive as a fraternity. We always had friends hanging around.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 11.21.12 @ 10:33 pm

@FRankcan

Yea I saw that. The main SEC blog had PITT listed as a possible target which would make sense for the SEC, since it would get them into a brand new area and Pittsburgh is in the Top 25 for TV markets.

If we truly are serious about football and still consider ourselves a football school (which I doubt considering the moves that have and haven’t be made by Pitt’s admin), PITT should put a feeler out to the SEC, as besides offering a brand new market for them, they get a good academic school, which is sorely needed with only Vanderbilt & Florida and possibly Georgia considered good academic schools. Don’t know maybe Texas A&M is too. Mizzou isn’t bad.

But put a feeler out, who knows, if it is going to 4 16 team conferences, as long as Texas stays in the Big 12, that is going to be more viable as one of the 4 than the ACC.

Comment by Emel 11.22.12 @ 1:34 pm

We could pull a TCU, lol

Comment by Emel 11.22.12 @ 1:35 pm

That would be funny as hell and really stick in Delaney’s craw. A hated SEC outpost smack dab between Ohio State & Ped State.

Comment by Emel 11.22.12 @ 1:39 pm

And Kentucky isn’t that far away, Lexington is closer than Louisville to Pittsburgh, and not that far from Cincy.

It could work for PITT and the SEC is launching their own network and like I said if it’s going to Four 16 school conf’s, we need to get a spot now. Not later !
