We Get Letters — Sort Of

Filed under: Admin — Chas @ 8:06 am

We lost power for a near 24-hour period thanks to high winds and rain. Somehow our block had minimal tree damage. The block east of us, however, got slammed. Some 8 or 9 trees knocked over on that block. Including one that took out a transformer (and a car and part of a house). So the 3 inches of water in the basement because the sump pump wasn’t on seems relatively minor. A good part of my day will be bleach washing the basement surface and getting rid of a bunch of kids toys (not exactly the plan I had to get rid of a lot of old toys, but I’m going with it).

In the meantime I figure on sharing this e-mail that got forwarded to me from a reader. It came to me from Yardbarker’s managing editor, who received it — and was quite confused as to why it came to him. This really is an actual e-mail from an actual person.

I was given your name by Jerry Micco, Sports Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  I wrote to him expressing concern about the Pitt Blather column which is published in the Post-Gazette.  He responded by saying that the column is a publication of FOXSports.com so I am forwarding my concern to you.

I like the content of Pitt Blather very much, but I don’t like the name “Pitt Blather”.  According to the dictionary, blather means non-sensical talk.  What kind of a name is this to assign to a serious blog about Pitt football?  The names of the blogs for Penn State (Black Shoe Diaries) and WVU (The Mountaintop), which also appear in the Post-Gazette, are dignified and pertinent, but Pitt Blather is not only off-target but also demeaning.  I am hoping that you will find a way to have the name of this column changed to something that is more appropriate.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my request.

Sincerely,

[Name redacted]

If you ever wanted to know why corporations were wary/parnoid for so long about including hyperlinks and sidebars to outside content, meet Exhibit A.

I’m mostly amused, but for the suggestion that this is a “serious blog about Pitt football.” That kind of depresses me.

When I was trying to decide on the name of this blog the runner-up to “Pitt Sports Blather” was “The Babble Pitt.” To this day I still second-guess the decision.

So let’s be real for a minute… probably over 90% of those babbling and blathering here have NO experience as college athletes or coaches.. therefore most of what us self proclaimed experts write is really blathering. Still the best thing going for Pitt sports. Therefore my friends, blather on!!

Who cares about the name… the content is great!

Comment by Pittastic 10.31.12 @ 8:45 am

Well I was kinda questioning the name myself until Joe D started posting but now it makes perfect sense…haha j/k Joe. Love the fire 😉

“Dignified and Pertinent?”

He don’t know you very well, do he?

Comment by Shawn 10.31.12 @ 9:09 am

I would have gone with “Sardonic Views.”

Comment by Lee in Altoona 10.31.12 @ 9:18 am

Best Pitt sports blog and one of the best blogs period.

“I don’t always comment on sports blogs, but when I do, I PittBlather.”

Keep up the good work fellas!

Atlantic Panther – you made me choke on my coffee laughing!

Comment by winedogs 10.31.12 @ 9:22 am

Please tell me the letter writer is a Hoopie and not a Pitt alum.

Comment by KeithS 10.31.12 @ 9:51 am

I like adventure time

Comment by paul shannon 10.31.12 @ 9:52 am

I’m assuming that he sent a similar letter to Jerry Micco about the often blathering content of the PG sports section? I mean really, how else can one describe Ron Cook’s column?

Comment by Randy 10.31.12 @ 9:56 am

Nosmo King!

Comment by oklahomeboy 10.31.12 @ 9:58 am

Since I am an expert “Monday morning QB” having never coached a game of football I think the name is most appropriate for myself.

Comment by Pitt Fan In Atlanta 10.31.12 @ 10:11 am

In the old days we would all be on a bar stool.

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 10.31.12 @ 10:12 am

I’m thinking Stevie P penned the letter. He probably wants to change the colors too.

Comment by pghFred 10.31.12 @ 10:14 am

How dare he.

Comment by FRANKCAN 10.31.12 @ 10:39 am

@ Tackle made by Hugh, while eating hard boiled eggs and huge dill pickles at “Chiefs”.

Often when I read a post that I disagree with on “Blather” I think what BS! So my suggestion for a name change is, PittBull! LOL.

Really though, who cares, just “Mason Up” will ya.

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.31.12 @ 10:41 am

Obviously it needs changed to “Dignified and Pertinent.”

Comment by JW 10.31.12 @ 10:42 am

What we have to say is closer to the truth then what the post or the trib have to say,
and more heart felt.
iwish we were in the news paper then chryst and outhers might get some ideas like the pitt script and that the AD must go.

Comment by FRANKCAN 10.31.12 @ 10:45 am

Blather! Although when loses occur I refer to this site as Panthers Anonymous. The 12 step program for die-hard panther fans. Hail to the Blather.

Pitt basketball recruiting is done for this year
unless one of these two players wants to come to pitt.
noah vonleh 6 foot 9 power foward who they were recruiting for 2014 but he reclassefied to 2013
or beejay anya a 6 foot 8 center.
outher wise we are done.
and to make room for one of them some one would have to go.

Comment by FRANKCAN 10.31.12 @ 12:11 pm

Frankcan – Over at Cardiac Hill they are reporting that Beejay Anya has crossed Pitt off of his list.

Comment by winedogs 10.31.12 @ 12:54 pm

ND has a pretty good offense. We need a “Dave Logan” type of game from Aaron Donald. The former Highlander almost singlehandly stopped the harps when Cav went down with a busted arm.

Favorite sayings from the blather from over the years that could make a good blog title:

-“that was very Wannestedtian”
-“it’s not about you,” when Dixon wouldn’t play young guys during the CBI and we were upset
-“pining for the days of Paul Rhodes”
-“read and react,” the legendary Rhodes defensive philosophy
-“we just need to run faster”

Comment by AJ 10.31.12 @ 2:43 pm

Thank you for the laugh. If nothing else, I got a history lesson on the origins of The Blather.

Comment by NickW 10.31.12 @ 3:15 pm

“Pitt Discourse and Squabbling” just doesn’t have the same ring as Pitt Blather. Keep up the great work Chas!

Comment by ECH 10.31.12 @ 3:25 pm

If you change the name, would we still be called “Blatherites?”

Comment by pittbluegold 10.31.12 @ 5:07 pm

Glad you are back up.
Would not second-guess the name.
PITT BLATHER is perfect!

Comment by xfmrman 10.31.12 @ 6:19 pm

This would mean we are not all blathering idiots.
Wow that’s a load off. 🙂

P.S. Didn’t they tear down Peabody HS. Omg where is Emel’s namesake these days.

Oh man, they are out there! He/she is so serious about college football that he sounds like a nit or a golden domer! Hey doofus, its supposed to be fun! Fun in ways professional football isn’t. Some call the NFL the no fun league and there are reasons for that. Chas thanks for the chuckle.

Comment by opfim 10.31.12 @ 11:04 pm

It was steve and along with color change wants the site now referred to ‘Pittsburgh Discourse’ with a constipated chipmunk next to it!

Comment by John 10.31.12 @ 11:33 pm

“We need to learn how to blather faster during halftime”

“The blather was made by number 99, hugh Greeeeen”

“You’d have to blather here to believe it”.

This site is named appropriately. Who would participate here if it was called penn state blather?

Comment by dhuffdaddy 10.31.12 @ 11:44 pm

Dravon Henry seems pretty excited about receiving his Ohio State offer today, based on his Tweets…

Also via twitter, Robert Foster is ready to commit after he tells family/coaches/teammates…

Cross your fingers

Comment by Pitt's Golden Age 11.01.12 @ 12:26 am

“Blather” is an apt description of most fan rants, mine included. But I prefer you go restore the Script Blather…
Actually, Gene Collier wrote one of his better works of prose around Mike Shanahan and history. Blather you scoff! Perhaps.
I would be excited if Ohio State offered me as well. So let’s embrace our good fortune. For those who follow the stars (system), this usually means that one of our recruits became better overnight and rose in the rankings.
I am interested in Foster and while I have my suspicions, I really have no clue where he will go. But I di know this.
If two people know something, it isn’t a secret. If “family, friends and coaches” know, the world will know long before the young man announces.
And for those out there whining about competing against Ohio State for recruits I have a question. Would you prefer to compete against Ohio U?
Embrace the legitimacy that an evil glance from Urban gives you. In recruiting, perception is reality.

Comment by SFPitt 11.01.12 @ 1:44 am

@ SFPitt,
Unfortunately the sports world, college football and the whole world is all based on perception.

Even though these programs like Ped State & Ohio Fake have been proven to be cheats and the lowest form of humanity, they still are perceived to be better than PITT.

Which further proves my point…about….

The Power of Perception.

Truly a sad state of Affairs !

Comment by Emel 11.01.12 @ 2:20 am

We truly as a Nation need to realize the power of the Media who create these perceptions and hold them accountable for the destruction that they rote.

Comment by Emel 11.01.12 @ 2:23 am

It’s absolutely laughable to believe these so-called penalties on Ohio Fake and Ped State are going to change any perceptions at all. And therefore they are totally meaningless.

Let’s see….. a Decade long penalty on the number of recruits and bowl appearances. And a total ban on games televised !
And in Ped State’s case, what indeed has to happen there, for them to get a total death penalty. Little boys sacrificed and slain ? Because this wasn’t like it was some one time occurrence, this was something that went on for over a 12 year period and more likely a 25 year period or longer ! That whole thing sickens me and it should you !

And then it was covered up for over a decade by the supposed leaders of a higher institution of higher learning. Give me a frickin break.

The fact that they are allowed on TV, says how little the media gives a damn on what these cheatin, evil, scumbag universities do !

Veritas et Virtus

Comment by Emel 11.01.12 @ 2:36 am

Blather on gentlemen, Dave Logan, haven’t heard him mentioned for a long time, good one! Donald could make history, Mason up, I love it.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by gc 11.01.12 @ 7:36 am

Who care about the name and definition
of “blather?” The content is key.

Great article in the Trib on Chris Burns.

Comment by JR 11.01.12 @ 8:42 am

Chas,

Glad to hear you made it through the storm with relatively minimal damage. I live in Aliquippa and while we got a good bit of rain and some unbelievably strong winds, we never lost power and damage to trees in our neighborhoods seemed to be relatively non-existent. I can’t help but think we dodged a bullet.

Comment by Stoosh 11.01.12 @ 8:58 am

At least you’re honest in calling it Blather. I just got off a 2-hour conference call for work — that was blather. Fox and MSNBC are blather. I’d rather blather about Cam Saddler than have a creepy name like Black Shoe Diaries (especially in wake of everything that’s happened central PA way).
