Good God, Play the Run

Filed under: Football — Chas @ 12:43 pm

Memo to Defensive Coordinator Dave Huxtable. Do not. I repeat. DO NOT overthink what Temple will do on offense.

They run the ball. That is the primary. I noted yesterday that they run the ball on 68.5% of their offensive chances. It dawned on me, though, that I don’t think I made that point clear enough.

On first down it is even more absurd. They are second from the bottom of all of 1-A football when it comes to pass attempts on first down. Only the creative genius that is Bob Davies in New Mexico passes less on first down.

There is no excuse that Pitt should be in anything but run defense on first down (and most other downs). The only reasons: either Pitt managed to steal the offensive playcalling signals from Temple, or Temple is in some sort of two-minute drill trying to drive at the end of the game to score. Otherwise, just stop the damn run.

Stop the damn run!

Just stop it.

Davie not Davies. Watch them air it out for 400

TonyC the way this year has been going, I wouldn’t be surprised!

There is an old axiom used in the NFL…”To win a championship to have to run and stop the run”…in the college game I do not think that holds true that much today given the pass happy offenses being deployed by most teams…however, I think that it is precisely the prescription for a Pitt victory this week!…

I gotta go with Chas on this one with a twist. The QB is a big part of their run game.
I don’t pass blitz..I run blitz…gap control and stay in your damn lanes.

Walt: “I had no idea that Toledo would continue to pass in the 2nd half despite their easy 1st half success.”

Wanny: “Rutgers is a running team. What we are seeing here is an attempt to lure us out of our base defense.”

Chryst: ?????

We couldn’t stop it against Buffalo. I am not optimistic that we can stop it against Temple.

We were just getting the LB situation worked out a little and they were playing better, and then Shane Gordon & Manny Williams got hurt. Now while I’m very happy that Todd Thomas is back (actually I thought this season was lost, so I thought maybe a Medical Redshirt would have been a good idea), this LB corp has been pretty much different every game and that is not good. And then Thomas has had to play both Outside Backer positions ( Wil and Sam) in his 2 starts. Oy Vey !

Now we’ve added Mason to the mix.
And while I love the kid and he’s a wonderful inspiration to the team.
Double Oy Vey !

We had problems corralling that UB QB, Zordich.
The Temple QB(Chris Coyer) is a better runner than him.
Maybe they should bring up the Free Safety to help in run support, as the new LB’s are still feeling their way. Well that could be an adjustment made if we’re NOT able to stop their run in our base defense. But if I’m Addazio I would be expecting that move and then I’d call a deep down the middle pass to the TE, who is their 2nd leading receiver.

Looking over Temple’s Roster they have 8 (eight) players from Florida. Sheesh, that’s quite more than us. PC really needs to hire someone with Florida connections……like yesterday !

Lots of Pittsburgh people in Jax and even a Permanti’s in Ft.Lauderdale. Come on PC you can do it.

P.S. I was just on the Primanti Bro’s website, they have frickin locations in EVERY suburb in the Burg now. They cant be the same as going to the Strip, where Chubs use to basically tell you what you were going to eat. What else a Cheese Steak !

The Temple coach (in his second year)was the OC at Florida, so not only does he have a good offensive mind he has connections to Florida.

Well it’s Happy Hour Time down here in Mid-Dixie.
Would love to have gone to this game as I started my college experience at Temple. You think Oakland is a shithole, you should have seen Temple’s campus. lol
We always hung out with the Ivy League snobs over at Penn at Smokey Joe’s. What bores they were !
🙂

Anyway… everyone have a good time at the game as well as the pre & post game activities.
And for God sake, bring home a win for PITT !!

right markp. Maybe we should have hired him, lol

I think Pitt will have more success stopping Temple’s QB than they did with Zordich @ Buffalo.

Most of Zordich’s yardage came from scrambling (due to excellant pass coverage) on pass plays where Pitt’s d-ends lost contain. Temple doesn’t pass the ball much, so those opportunities will present themselves less than in Buffalo.

Temple’s QB runs are designed, which should be easier for Pitt to defend. Just sit back and read your keys.

Anyone able to watch the hoops game? I hear it is 12-12 with 4:00 left in the first half. #TakeTheLidOff

Half time Pitt 21- D-2 IUP 16. Pretty bad half. Plenty of missed free throws, bad defense and Steve Adams looks slow. Looked like last yr.

The Pitt-Temple game is listed on the Big East tv network which many of us in Maryland and probably elsewhere don’t get. However, I just checked the Mid Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) web site and it will be on there at noon. So those of us in Maryland, DC and other states that get MASN appear to be good to go.

My family and I toured the campus this afternoon and we noticed that Pitt band members (trumpet section) were guarding the panther statue at the corner of Forbes and Bigelow…in full uniform….is this an old tradition that I somehow missed?

BTW – the students I spoke to seem excited about the team and attending the game tomorrow. Good for them I say!
