Early, Early Homecoming

Well, for those who hate noon games, this is actually worse. The Saturday, October 13 Homecoming game of Louisville-Pitt is getting a start time of 11 am for an ESPNU game.

Thanks to our overlords at ESPN for that. Pitt has no say on the times for a conference game. That’s between ESPN and the Big East. Well, really, it’s all up to what ESPN wants.

I repeat 11 am. Not 11 Central. 11 am, Eastern.

If you are a student or in for Homecoming weekend, I recommend the all-nighter. What, with Midnight Madness that night.

Going to be a lot of fun to get up at 5 AM to drive to Pittsburgh that morning. Bitter venting at this not only permitted, but encouraged.

Call me CRAZY but I think this works in Pitt’s favor. Louisville has not been what I would call a mentally sharp or focused team over the past two years. (See: Call of Duty Incident) L’ville has looked sloppy ever since the second half of the UNC game, and I feel like an 11 am start time will ensure a slow start by the Cardinals, if they even remember to set their alarms on time. Pitt, buoyed by the energy of homecoming, comes out on fire, gets off to a hot start, and then PC uses the run game to grind out a tight win.

Seriously, I’d rather have an 11 am game at home than on the road, I think this favors Pitt more than Louisville. It’ll be up to PC to make sure his guys stay focused and ready to get after it at 11, but I have a good feeling about that start time!

Irish coffee, mamosas and bloody marys

Comment by wbb 10.01.12 @ 12:10 pm

That’s exceptionally and unconscionably *Swear Word Adjective*

Comment by Cavalier Panther 10.01.12 @ 12:13 pm

And yet another reason why moving to the ACC was a no brainer.

Comment by Wardapalooza 10.01.12 @ 12:17 pm

I have been on hold with the Pitt ticket office half the morning and they are also stunned by the game time. Un f’n believable.

Comment by Dan 72 10.01.12 @ 12:25 pm

omg. never got to the parking lot at 6am. will need to set the alarm.

keep calm.

hail to pitt.

Comment by pittkeith 10.01.12 @ 12:28 pm

FYI it’s Freakin DARK outside at 6am. Are they planning to have the lights on in the parking lots? As if homecomming couldn’t be a bigger non-event….This pretty much kills it.

Anyone else thinking….post game tailgate instead???

What a joke.

Comment by ClarkLotTgate 10.01.12 @ 12:32 pm

Wow, I have no words for this…Why not go totally high school and make it a 10:00 AM kickoff!

Comment by HbgFrank 10.01.12 @ 12:42 pm

Drinking alcohol at 9 or 10am is a tough thing for an older body to do.

Tailgating afterwards is a good idea but a win definitely helps and this will be a tough game. Moreover, you’ll need to sober up before the ride home and that could take some time.

I think the time is to Pitt’s advantage. Chryst just needs to make sure his players are on curfew and get a good night’s sleep. Save your energy for the big Saturday night party after the big win.

I’ll be watchin down here in Texas with a Shiner by the pool. I’ll be in for Temple.

Comment by TX Panther 10.01.12 @ 12:45 pm

Does PITT really need to be on TV so bad, that we have to ruin homecoming. After the parties, etc., late nite on Friday nite, who in f*ck is going to want to get up at 7 or 8 am to go to Heinz Field. And listen to that over modulated annnouncer and that god awful rap noise between every snap.

Since this is our last year in the BIgLeast, if PITT had any balls, they’d tell ESPN/BigLeast to shove it. Yea right…. lol

Comment by EMel 10.01.12 @ 12:47 pm

This is a joke. Post game tailgate more in play for me now but still not happy. 3 hr drive for 11am game. This should have been scheduled before the season started!!!!

Comment by why me 10.01.12 @ 12:49 pm

Purely selfish but GREAT NEWS. I was told by my wife that I was going to have to miss the game as we have a 3pm wedding, but now I can watch Pitt deliver a homecoming victory and then get trashed at the wedding. Just hope PC has the boys ready to take a big lead so I can get out of the parking lot early. Wonder if I’ll be the only guy at the wedding wearing my Pitt gear?

Comment by Taxing Matters 10.01.12 @ 12:50 pm

And if they lose ( a distinct possibility), the post game activities starting at 2pm, should be real joyous. Might be better to go back to the Hotel and crash for a few hours. Cause I would dead at 8 or 9 pm otherwise and no fun at all.

Hell it might be better just to stay home, since the University/Athletic Dept. has no regard for people coming from out of town obviously.

Doesn’t this suck.

Comment by EMel 10.01.12 @ 12:53 pm

glad for taxing matters- at least someone gets something out of this! never heard of an 11 am eastern kickoff.

Comment by nw pa pitt fan 10.01.12 @ 12:57 pm

I have a 2-1/2 hour drive, so that makes an early morning for me.

Comment by gdodson 10.01.12 @ 12:57 pm

TaxingMatters, on the other hand, guess who has to go to a relative’s wedding this freaking Friday night?

Comment by wbb 10.01.12 @ 1:04 pm

wbb,
Fall weddings suck . My sister got married last year when Pitt played ND. Considering I walked her down the aisle, it would have been a bit tough to miss that one. Although I missed a loss, I still wanted to be there.
Good luck getting the game on one of those new fangled video “whatchyamacallits” while your at the wedding.

Comment by Taxing Matters 10.01.12 @ 1:14 pm

wbb – I feel ya…I’m going to wedding Friday night also, and I know it’s going to be a big party. Waking up for the 6am tailgate is gonna be rough, but I’ll be there…I refuse to let the Big East and ESPN affect the plans.

BTW, your relative’s wedding wouldn’t happen to be at the Doubletree in Greentree Friday night?

Comment by Hank the Tank 10.01.12 @ 1:42 pm

Wow – 11Am for HOMECOMING? Thanks SP for standing up for your University’s best interest ($) instead of those lesser-importance stakeholders (students, alumni).

Comment by The Big A 10.01.12 @ 1:48 pm

Here are the other TV times/games the Big Least negotiated with ESPN for October 13:

12noon – Syracuse @ Rutgers – ESPN3/BE Network
1PM – Temple @ UCONN – ESPN3

Previously scheduled: 7PM – Fordam @ Cincinnati – ESPN3

Comment by TheHoopZebra 10.01.12 @ 1:58 pm

i seriously thought the 11am kickoff was a typo when i read that on espn earlier. get your oj and champagne ready

Comment by usd121 10.01.12 @ 2:02 pm

Big East sticking it to Pitt yet one more time.

I will be at the Maryland/Wake Forest game this Saturday. Will be wearing my Pitt gear just to remind them of one more football and two more basketball losses they can look forward to starting next year.

Comment by longsufferingpittfan 10.01.12 @ 2:09 pm

I agree that Fall weddings do suck particularly on days when Pitt plays Iowa and gets an invite to the ACC. Are your reading this Pat?

Comment by TX Panther 10.01.12 @ 2:19 pm

This is all on the Big Least .. as much as they most likely despise it, Pitt and Uncle Stevie had absolutely no say in it and have no recourse to “just say, no” .. the TBA on the schedule means To Be Announced by the League .. teams do not schedule conference games .. there was no ‘already scheduled’ kick-off time to revert to even if they wanted to .. besides, there is no way Louisville would agree with Pitt and go against the league – they’re still going to be here next year .. so let’s save the vitriol for the Big Least where it’s most appropriately directed and which is looking better and better in the rear view mirror …

Comment by TheHoopZebra 10.01.12 @ 2:23 pm

Emel and Big A – Pitt and SP have nothing to do w/the times, ESPN and the BiG East do…at least the game is on the U versus espn3.

Comment by markp 10.01.12 @ 2:25 pm

BIGGEST LOAF OF BULLSHIT. EVER.

Comment by H.LandPitt 10.01.12 @ 2:29 pm

Midnight Madness…all night partying…early morning tailgating…Pittsburgh ZombieFest 11:00am at Heinz Field!…

Comment by Leaseman 10.01.12 @ 2:46 pm

Yeah.. Think there will be a lot more yellow and not too much “red” in the stadium. Making that 7 hr. trek for a 4:00pm game and partying in Pgh sat. night would have been an option for a few Cards. The 11:00am game hurts the local economy as well as our “feelings” and plans.

Comment by CompLit 10.01.12 @ 3:29 pm

Sorry if I don’t cry a river for you guys. I’ll be up at 7:00 cooking breakfast for an 8:00 am kickoff.

Comment by cnorwoodaz 10.01.12 @ 3:30 pm

Wonder if there’s a plan to carry the passed out student section from the busses into the stadium?

Comment by CompLit 10.01.12 @ 3:33 pm

Why don’t they just move the game to Wembley Stadium so that the fans they must really be targetting can see it in person?

In any event, I enjoy breakfast tailgates as much as any other, so bring on the egg casserole and bloodies!

Comment by JLawrence 10.01.12 @ 3:35 pm

I hate ESPN… and this doesn’t help.

Comment by PittofDreams 10.01.12 @ 3:35 pm

Big A, No it’s not at the Doubletree — just the opposite, it’s in Amish country where hard cider may well be the most potent beverage avilable — (not sure yet) .. but I’m bringing my flask

Comment by wbb 10.01.12 @ 3:37 pm

In other news…the game and 11 am start time is now sponsored by 5 hour energy. You’re gonna need it.

Comment by Atlanta Panther 10.01.12 @ 4:10 pm

Over/Under 40,0000 for this one?

Comment by PatMac 10.01.12 @ 4:19 pm

Morning games dangerously encourage binge drinking, as people try to cram an entire tailgate into one hour.

Comment by Chuck Morris 10.01.12 @ 4:19 pm

I wish tv did not have a say all games should be at 1 pm even pro games like they were years ago.

Comment by FRANKCAN 10.01.12 @ 4:26 pm

as much as i hate noon games, ive learned to deal with it. i will be there at 6am at my normal spot with a beer in my hand and having fun. Hopefully the ACC will treat us better then this.

Comment by mike 10.01.12 @ 4:41 pm

Yeah, and it’s Alumni Band Weekend. Want to go as it’s Jack Anderson’s last year., but we have to be there about 4 hours before game time. We’ll need flashlights to tell the old farts from the youngsters!

Comment by CompLit 10.01.12 @ 4:55 pm

This just in: The Big East has announced that the 11AM start time for Pitt – Louisville was set up as a test run for the 2013 opening BE game – Rutgers @ San Diego State which will need to start at 9AM local time to make ESPN’s noon east coast TV time slot. [sarcasm intended]

Comment by TheHoopZebra 10.01.12 @ 5:00 pm

Could be a slick field for this one. Does the morning dew even burn off the grass in October before, like, one o’clock?

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.01.12 @ 5:17 pm

Midnight maddness is that night before an 11 am game. First the Pirates, no Pens, and now this

Comment by KRF 10.01.12 @ 9:40 pm

Oy Vey, Thursday night games, now Friday night games competing against local high school games, and now an 11 am Sat. start. Funny we got the whole trifecta this year from the Bums at ESPN/BigLeast.

The season will be only 6 games old and we had the Thursday AND Friday nite games AND the 11 am Sat. Start. And it’s homecoming weekend !! And we have Midnight Madness the nite before, WTF !

And we all should know by now, ESPN gives the orders in this arrangement, the Providence peeps just listen and go…”yes sir”.

This is what money and overt money grubbing has done to college sports and tradition. Basically thrown it in the toilet and flushed it.

Let me have old musty historic PITT stadium, with 1 pm or 3:30 starts, the walk/stumble up Cardiac Hill from the Keg or Zelda’s or frat house bar, provided the kegs weren’t blown from previous nite’s activities. And something hidden, that nobody cared about in the student section. That usually was passed around. Now that was a great college gameday(hear that ESPN). Not the crap we have now. Too bad these kids at PITT now will never experience what we had.

Here’s to PITT Stadium, the Script and the Mustard and Royal Blue !

Suggest lots of coffee (the good stuff, very strong), lox and bagels and bloody mary’s as necessary. Let’s win one for the acc and knock the snot (win wise) out of l’ville. htp!

Comment by opfim 10.01.12 @ 10:03 pm

Come on the big east is a train wreck waiting to happen. How can you not follow it to it some degree.

Comment by KRF 10.01.12 @ 10:10 pm

11 AM start time is a residual effect of the Youngstown St. loss. We lost too much credibility – this should easily have been a night game on ESPN 2. In my days at Pitt this is precisely the time I rolled out of bed after a typical fun filled Friday night !

Comment by ROCKY20 10.01.12 @ 10:20 pm

My hotel is on the North Shore boys. I’ll roll out of bed at 10 and see you at 10:15 for some shots. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by The Atlanta Panther 10.01.12 @ 10:42 pm

hey for those of you that said the wait during the bye week was killin you…. ESPN moved it up!!
Just kidding! Have my daughters pitching lesson in Punxsutawney @ 7am so getting down in time for the game is gonna be tricky!

Comment by Punxy Panther 10.01.12 @ 10:47 pm

Well this sucks. I really was thinking they might schedule this one at around 330. And if PITT snuck by the CUSE we couldve been in for a fun atmosphere for a 330 game against an undefeated Lousville team.

blah..

Comment by rhyno527 10.01.12 @ 11:34 pm

TX Panther,
Aren’t you glad you had something else to distract you from the pain of losing to Iowa? Nothing better than keg-stands of Penn Oktoberfest for that.

Comment by Patrick 10.02.12 @ 12:26 am

I like SFPitt’s attitude. I suggest just mixing up the pitchers of screwdrivers and bloody Marys the night before so that they’ll be nice and cold for the morning tailgate. Now if the SF in SFPitt’s name stands for San Francisco then he would really have great reasons to bitch, right?! Let’s see, roll out of bed at 7:30 on the west coast, bright and early Saturday morning and catch the Pitt game before you have a chance to drink your second cup of coffee. Now there is a logistics problem!

It’s all good, it just made my decision exceptionally easy in deciding to stay over in Pittsburgh Friday night. So now my Son and I catch Midnight Madness and get to wake up and just walk over for the game on Saturday morning. No 4 1/2 hour drive as a warm up to the game festivities. It is all in your perspective.

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.02.12 @ 7:36 am

For those needing libation to get their spirits up (pun intended), when we move to he ACC we can look forward to playing Thursday night games. Being a GA Tech season ticket holder, Thursday night games on the Flats make for an early rise where I do have to set my alarm clock — to get up and go to work on Friday. 🙁

Happy Homecoming! 🙂

HTP!

Comment by MariettaMike 10.02.12 @ 7:49 am

And nothing better than breaking my middle finger getting that keg out of the backseat of a Sonata. Good times!

Comment by TX Panther 10.02.12 @ 11:07 am

Blame the Pirates, ESPN thought they’d make it to the playoffs when this game was scheduled and that the ‘Rats would be playing at PNC that afternoon. Pirates tank, time’s already locked in, too bad. Stupid Pirates.

Comment by deepelemblues 10.02.12 @ 11:15 am

I was planning to attend the fireworks and midnight madness for the first time with my fiance. I never saw this as a student. My old 29 year old rear end has no chance of staying up to 2 am and then getting to an 11 am game the next day. Thank you, world wide leader of sports.

Comment by AJ 10.02.12 @ 1:23 pm

I couldn’t have said it better than “FloodCity Panther” over at Cardiac Hill, Check it out.

Regarding our cry baby fan base,I’m much more direct and much less suble. My request to the Panther fan base, drag your lazy ass out of bed, pull up your big boy pants and go chug a few beers before showing up to cheer on the Panthers to victory! Kill the Ville!

Looks like I’ll be at Midnight Madness too. Gonna take my son, stay in the hotel right after and roll to the game. Maybe it will be a Blather Fest. This is one time I really wish we had an on campus stadium. Dr.Tom, I’ll follow your libation suggestions. Bottoms up!
