Open Thread: VT-Pitt

Got called in for a Saturday project at the last minute. So, I couldn’t make the trip to Pittsburgh. Not happy about it, I really, really don’t want to have to hear constant references to Beamer Ball on TV.

If you watched ESPN’s pre-game show last night before Washington St-UNLV, as they ran through key games they hit on the VT-Pitt game for all of 7 seconds. Basically, Mark May did not want to talk about this.

Not sure if I’ll be back home for kick-off so the DVR is set, and I may take a while to catch-up.

Oh ye of little faith

I called this game in the preseason. But I lost faith after those first two debacles. Today we played with Pitt Panther Pride and I am proud of them!
Hail To Pitt!!!!

Big up to Chryst and the offensive line coach. That is ridiculous turn around.

Comment by Stashy 09.15.12 @ 3:22 pm

Hail to Pitt!

Dr. Tom,

Oh yeh of little faith!

Comment by PittofDreams 09.15.12 @ 3:30 pm

Alcofan I never give up on them whether they win OR LOSE. They are my college football team plain and simple and besides I am an adult and that is just freakin neat for me….

Comment by Kenny 09.15.12 @ 3:30 pm

Tino played well — hats off. But his pocket awareness still makes me REALLY nervous. I think the O-line were the champs today but Tino hit some good throws. Shell is fierce.

Comment by Matt N. 09.15.12 @ 3:30 pm

The no talent wpial’s Rushel Shell 23 carries for 157 yds.

Comment by alcofan 09.15.12 @ 3:30 pm

And the D-line brung it too.

Comment by Matt N. 09.15.12 @ 3:31 pm

Good! Now the cry babies on this board will be quiet for awhile.

Comment by Oklahomeboy 09.15.12 @ 3:32 pm

look it up when chas ask who would win i said pitt bye 6 but this is better.

Comment by FRANKCAN 09.15.12 @ 3:32 pm

The O-line and D-line was the difference in this game.

Comment by J Bizz 09.15.12 @ 3:32 pm

Shell & Graham – 250 yds. rushing – starting to feel like the PC we read about at Wisky!

Comment by CompLit 09.15.12 @ 3:33 pm

@ Kenny – according to Chas, “neat” has to be used inside of quote marks!

Comment by CompLit 09.15.12 @ 3:36 pm

Both of my arms are all red and swollen because I keep pinching myself, is this for real?
Well if Dorian Johnson was debating between Pitt and Virginia Tech, this should seal the deal. Fantastic game for potential Pitt recruits to see.

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.15.12 @ 3:39 pm

It’s Mea Culpa time fellas.

Comment by PittofDreams 09.15.12 @ 3:43 pm

Sign those recruits up now even if it is to many.

Comment by Frank 09.15.12 @ 3:45 pm

Boy was I wrong! I was counting the days until basketball season (30 now btw). Was this a Tino abberation and will we lose to GW next week or has PC gotten him in line. D-line was awesome, Aaron Donald looking like 1st team AA. HTP

Comment by jim 09.15.12 @ 3:52 pm

Wow where the hell was this team for two weeks???

You know what Tino will probably F us in a few games this season but at least for today I congratualate him for a well played game and for a great effort. It was amazing to see some life on the Pitt sideline. Lots of energy early on.

Why can’t Tino just do this every week??? He wasn’t spectacular but he played very well and most of all he didn’t do anything stupid to lose the game. He dumped the ball when he needed to, hit the wide open receivers and made smart decisions….if he does this consistently this team can compete.

Congratulations to the Panthers. It would have been easy to go out there and flop but they played hard and played with some pride for a change.

Rushel Shell! Can’t wait to see more of this guy – he is special.

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.15.12 @ 3:54 pm

We blast him when he is bad, we need to praise him when he is good. Tino played a fantastic game…good on ya! Joe D, Shell is who we thought he was…a ridiculously talented power RB!

Comment by HbgFrank 09.15.12 @ 3:57 pm

Tino played great, only a few bad throws (INT was awful)… O-line made VT’s defense look like a high school JV unit… Only thing that worries me after today is the penalties and big plays… can’t give up 85 yard TDs and 94 yard punt returns every day.

I can’t wait to have Shell and Voytik in the same backfield for (hopefully!) three years starting next season.

Comment by deepelemblues 09.15.12 @ 3:58 pm

Brooklyn’s “Top of the food chain” Jason Hendricks with 2 picks today. He was missed last yr.

Comment by alcofan 09.15.12 @ 4:00 pm

heck of a game today. Glad they showed up

Comment by Kenny Powers 09.15.12 @ 4:03 pm

Tino showed up today and played SMART but before you Tino backers gloat too too much, remember Syracuse 2010 and USF 2011. He looked sharp in those games and then laid eggs pretty much the rest of the season. Chryst is a better coach than Wanny and Graham I’m guessing however, so probably will manage ‘bad’ Tino more effectively. And if the line can play close to that the rest of the season, and Graham keeps getting healthy and Shell runs like that, we may just power ball everyone else we play and only require average QB play.

Comment by Matt N. 09.15.12 @ 4:22 pm

it is good so nice to win

Comment by FRANKCAN 09.15.12 @ 4:31 pm

Congrats to Paul Chryst for first Head Coaching victory.

In 2 weeks this team lost to a D2 and looked listless, never had the lead and frankly embarrassed the University, to today. WTF

Life & football is sure strange.

Comment by Emel 09.15.12 @ 4:36 pm

wash, rinse, repeat.

Comment by rhyno527 09.15.12 @ 4:40 pm

The much maligned defense was stellar today albeit for a few plays. (most notable the 85 yd pass)

Came up huge when the game was still in doubt after Tino threw the 4rth Quarter pick at 28-17.

They keep playing like that, and we continue to have the 1-2 punch in the backfield, Graham & Shell, this team could do some damage.

We shall see, inconsistency has been a hallmark of Pitt’s since 1983.

Pitt played an awesome game, including Sunseri. I hope they can continue to build on this. Can Tino keep duplicating this? Graham and Shell were beast! Great performance!!!

PittofDreams said:

I second that with a “Neat” “Neat” “Neat” Third “Neat” for emphasis because it was a good day for a Pitt and its fans…

Comment by Kenny 09.15.12 @ 5:03 pm

Looks like Sunseri, Shell, and Graham are back in the running for the Heisman. Remember most of us thought it would be a blowout and we were right!

Comment by 66Goat 09.15.12 @ 5:08 pm

Well we saw what can be today. Hopefully the line play continues and the defense remains tough.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pittman_1979 09.15.12 @ 5:10 pm

I have no idea what happened to the Pitt football team today,,,,,BUT I LIKE IT!

Comment by Dr. Tom 09.15.12 @ 5:14 pm

I was wrong, my boyz in Vegas were wrong, but these Bud Lights taste soooooooo good!

Comment by Moe Greene 09.15.12 @ 6:02 pm

I was there. Tino played smart football. Street had an attitude. Graham nay not be 100%, but he us back to using his instincts. D played well, tackled better.VTECH QB threw off his back foot all day..throws sailed.
Was impressed with physical play of Shell. D line hit people. Harper got a mulligan today. Holding on Punt return, but it ain’t a penalty unless they throw a flag.
Attendance was lousy, but it should have been.
Shanahan catching TD after getting crushed on punt return was sweet revenge. Did I actually see linebackers reading the play?? Band sounded good. Pretty day. Pederson still must go. 3 RBs. When was the last time we had 3 legit runners? 74 will have a lot to work on this week.
Covered but what was the over/under?
