The Big East decided to screw Pitt in the SEC/Big East Match-up this year. The ACC, however, is being a lot cooler about things for their own marquee non-con conference cross-over.

Syracuse and Pitt are expected to be a part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in 2013 when they are members of the ACC. There was initial talk of not including them because they were new — but that was never going to fly. The ACC hasn’t officially decided how it will decide the 12 teams that will go against the 12 from the Big Ten. But one proposal that will be discussed is to pair the top 12 RPI teams from the previous season in the ACC with the 12 Big Ten teams. If that’s the case, the bottom teams will get frozen out.

Doesn’t that simply make more sense when one side has more teams than the other? To take your best teams? These are match-ups for conference pride and bragging rights. If you can avoid sending the DePauls, Providences and Wake Forests you do it.

PLAY PENN STATE!!!

Comment by Lee in Altoona 08.31.12 @ 8:55 am

Dibb’s on the Penn State game would be wonderful each year, but if we want a stronger schedule we may want to opt for someone who will actually perform better than the bottom half of D1 Basketball.

I would not play Penn State in anything. No college wants to be on the geographical outskirts of their conference, just ask BC. It can be polarizing and the team can lose an identity. The repercussions for the college in middle PA are yet to be felt and extending any olive branch is a mistake in my opinion.

As far as the challenge is concerned I do agree with Chas that each conference needs to send their best. Perception is huge in the media. Whoever wins will be seen in a greater light by espn and hence perceived to be stronger come selection time. As Don Henley once wrote…”kick em when they’re up, kick em when they’re down, kick em when they’re up, kick em all around!

Could we be lucky enough to get it to be a home game at The Pete??

Comment by Dan 08.31.12 @ 10:27 am

Lee in Altoona, Jamie Dixon had us playing Penn State. If I’m not mistaken, Penn State didn’t want the basketball series to continue. To Jamie Dixon’s credit he has been receptive to playing Robert Morris, Duquesne as well. Those are bigger games for those programs than are for Pitt and their players get up for playing Pitt. If you look at it what Pitt gains, they gain nothing. You risk more by playing Penn State, Robert Morris or Duquesne, because they are not very highly regarded. I you happen to lose one those games, it’s a big hit, with little or notheing to gain. Despite that Dixon, hasn’t avoided scheduling them. If Penn State ever wants to resume playing Pitt in basketball, I am sure Jamie Dixon would listen.

Home game vs Ohio State.

Yes, please.

Home game vs Duke, yes please.

Home game vs UNC, yes please.

Home game vs Maryland, yes please.

You get the point.

One more go around in the BE, lets enjoy it.

Comment by H.LandPitt 08.31.12 @ 11:23 am

Lee in Altoona, Maybe we should offer them “Joe PA’s 2 for 1 deal”, with 2 home games, at the Pete, for each game at State College.

Comment by Justinian 08.31.12 @ 12:35 pm

Justinian,

How about we don’t acknowledge them at all?

That sounds better to me.

Comment by H.LandPitt 08.31.12 @ 12:50 pm

Pedo State ?? Who wants to play those child molesters and their enablers of the raping of little boys. No thanks !

And can we take those creeps from Creepy Valley OFF the football schedule. Sellout, schmellout.

Let’s stand for something the complete opposite of the pedo’s from Creepy Valley.

Veritas et Virtus !

Give me Ohio State or Wisconsin. Preferably Ohio Sate so we can resume kicking their asses from the end of Howland, beginning of Dixon era. I believe the Suckeyes called off the series since we were clobbering them.

Comment by Emel 08.31.12 @ 1:22 pm

But my gut says we get Wisconsin. Both teams don’t run much, rely on tough D. And you would have that Pitt-Wisconsin back story line for the media.

Isn’t their coach Bo Ryan I believe, from the Burg as well.

If they go with RPI’s from the previous season, it doesn’t guarantee a good matchup, due to a little thing called graduation or the NBA draft.

Perfect example would be PITT from 2010 (high RPI) to PITT 2011, (stunk).

If I realize it, surely the muckety mucks of each conf will too.

@justinian

What is truly funny is the first year after PSU dropped Pitt, they had their best team in decades but still couldn’t make the NCAA tourney due to a crappy SOS. A game with Pitt might have put them in the dance.

Comment by pghFred 08.31.12 @ 1:52 pm

Sanity! From a conference! It feels AMAZING!!

Comment by Get the Glory 08.31.12 @ 2:11 pm

pghFred, Yes, and to compound the stupidity, no one would have expected them to beat Pitt. If they played the Panthers tough it would be feather in their cap. A upset of Pitt, by Penn State, would be a signature win for them. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. As the saying goes, “No guts, no glory!”

Comment by Justinian 08.31.12 @ 4:55 pm

Guess who I want us to play. I’d pay anything to see Pitt at tOSU & kick their ass.

Comment by OhHowIHateOhioState 08.31.12 @ 5:37 pm

Just an FYI for all of the out of towners… Pitt game will be on ESPN3.com at 6pm Saturday.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 08.31.12 @ 7:14 pm

Please anybody but PSU. Its over for them they turned their backs on us now lets just stay away. OSU,MICH,MICH ST,WISKY, OR INDIANA those are the teams I would like to see home or away

Lets get to the really important stuff, what is Chryst’s position on the return to the script.

Comment by maryland andy 08.31.12 @ 8:49 pm

Don’t play Pedophile State. They don’t want to play us in hoops because they suck. They don’t want to play us in football because they felt superior.
Well, they do suck and they are not superior.
Don’t play them in anything.
I prefer to play OSU or MSU.

Comment by SFPitt 08.31.12 @ 10:20 pm

Rev. George M. from Columbus, It was good to see you back in an earlier post. Perhaps you posted before that and I missed it–I was concerned that you had been kidnapped by rampaging buckeyes or something.

I agree with those of you above who want to knock the snot out of those so and sos (ohio) in basketball. Moreover I’d like to have them as an occasional out of conference opponent in football and do the same to them there as our team gets better.

About 18 and a half hours till the Paul Chryst era starts. HTP!

I’ll be in Atlanta for the Auburn game but I’ll catch the Pitt game on replay (assuming we win)
