Another Tradition Dies in Oakland

Filed under: The 'Burgh — Chas @ 7:47 am

Ah, Bates Street. Home to 3 am staggers, stumbles and vomit. That stretch of impoverished student housing and road conditions that necessitated avoidance if at all possible. Perpetually under some form of rebuilding that never seems to finish

What’s that? The City of Pittsburgh did what to it?

OH MY GOD, BATES IS FINISHED. @Souf_Oaklin on Twitpic

(H/T to @Sta7ic)

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

You bastards! You cleaned it up! What about tradition! What about history!

What? Jo Hammer Square across the Blvd of the Allies from the Pittsburgh Playhouse behind what was once a Volkswagen Dealership (where I lived c. 1970) could be next! Arrrh!!!

And creeping towards Dawson, my ’65 home.

Don’t do it.

Comment by steve1 08.04.12 @ 8:04 am

next thing you know, they’ll start cleaning the grille and changing the fry oil daily at the ‘O’

Comment by wbb 08.04.12 @ 8:10 am

wbb, did you know you can actually get a salad at the O? My wife just last year was the first to buy one.

Comment by steve1 08.04.12 @ 9:02 am

In case you haven’t noticed, the area is improving. I get it that some people cry tears of joy at the odor of stale beer and urine.

But change is inevitable.

BTW, Pitt will replace UNC as the oldest school in the ACC. Handy trivia.

save the cricket lounge !

First CJ’s becomes a Dunkin Donuts…now this. Where are the protesters?

Comment by Yeti 08.04.12 @ 10:23 am

Sfpitt, great call on the on the ACC’s oldest being Pitt.

Any idea who the oldest school with a D1 football or basketball program is?

Also, Bates has been at least half blocked off for upwards of a year, it’s about damn time that they got this done. I think it only took 3 water main breaks to do it.

Comment by Benzene 08.04.12 @ 11:06 am

Also, don’t kid yourselves… this is Pittsburgh we are talking about, Bates will be back to its normal self within 2 years.

Comment by Benzene 08.04.12 @ 11:06 am

UNC is older than Mr. Jefferon’s UVa?

Comment by Joe Lawrence 08.04.12 @ 3:16 pm

sorry – Jefferson.
I apologize to all offended Cavaliers

Comment by Joe Lawrence 08.04.12 @ 3:17 pm

From the posts about Bates, it sounds as if most of the contributors to this blog are older than UNC, me included! LOL

Comment by Dr. Tom 08.04.12 @ 3:20 pm

I always said that the best thing that happens to south oakland is a bomb goes off, but the roaches there would still survive regardles. I know we are a pitt blog, but i gotta report the idiocy i read over on a Penn State Scout blog. Apparently they are trying to make a “white out” at their first game with links to buy a shirt “The Freeh Stooges” with picks of Emmert, Freeh, and the PSU pres. What a bunch of morons! How disrespectful can they be toward this whole thing. If i was PSU administration, I wouldn’t allow anyone in the stadium that sported this shirt and/or arrest anyone onsite that got in the stadium and smuggled it in. This type of juvenile act just perpetuates the culture that they are attemtping to change. And it is almost like asking for more punishment to be given by the NCAA.

Did mike young announce yet? What is he waiting for? Pitt needs him. Don’t you dare become a Hoopie.

Comment by TX Panther 08.04.12 @ 7:07 pm

soon

Comment by pitt1972 08.04.12 @ 7:09 pm

Surprised no one is talking about the overwhelming Pittsburgh ties tonight at hall of fame induction.

Comment by Scoocher 08.04.12 @ 7:10 pm

Young picked………………….

PITT!!!!!!

Said it was so his family could watch him play, mom, bro and sis live nearby.

Good weekend for Pitt at the HOF. Chryst had better play this hand. Shows Pitt has tradition and has quality players historically as well as men of good character. The Pitt legacy is strong.

Comment by TX Panther 08.04.12 @ 7:59 pm

Excellent news about Mike Young. Reeling in prospects like this further lays waste to the notion that Jamie can’t recruit.

Comment by Swinging Gate 08.04.12 @ 8:08 pm

Jamie is proving he can close the deal. Now if only Chryst can do that with a few 4 stars. Granted, Jamie has a proven track record and Pitt basketball isn’t a cluster like football. Chryst has an uphill climb.

Comment by TX Panther 08.04.12 @ 8:41 pm

UNC began instruction in 1795. UVA began instruction in 1819. Sorry Mr. Jefferson… especially since 1787 trumps both easily.

By the way, what did they do to Bates? The picture looks like they just paved it and fixed the sidewalks. If so, who cares? Any new pavement will be soaked in beer and vomit by the first week of September.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 08.04.12 @ 9:29 pm

Oh no…could Zulema St be next? I lived in an apartment there in 1983 (just off Bates). Just around the block was a great gyro joint called Niko’s. I have yet to find a better gyro!

Oakland News.

Across the street from Carlow on Fifth is a brand new partment complex…
Look for bennie the torch to work some magic in Oakland next summer when the students are gone. I just hope no one gets hurt but nothing like a fire of suspect origins to “ignite” some redevelopment.

Comment by sfpitt 08.05.12 @ 11:16 am

Fear not! The traffic will still be horrible along that stretch. There are too many drunken, stumbling students and too many half-assed parking jobs in its future. That, and the occasional car starting to catch fire. *ahem*

Comment by Shawn 08.05.12 @ 7:29 pm

That photo looks like it was taken from just across the street from my last South Oakland apartment, and right around where my car was hit in November and towed in February. Good times.
