Watchlists to Fill the Time

You get a watchlist nod! And you get a watchlist nod! He gets a watchlist nod! Everybody gets a watchlist nod!

Still weeks before training camp. Not even any good arrests happening at this point in the college football offseason. So for the myriad of college football individual honors that are quickly forgotten once they are handed out in January (or is it December?), announcing the watchlists for the various awards makes sense.

We are bored/desperate enough. You get attention across all the conferences as long as you include a couple from each conference. Which they do. The watchlist is basically the acknowledgment that, yes this guy might be good and he’s got some hype. We’ll mention him.

So far, Pitt has four players mentioned on the watchlists:

Ray Graham — Maxwell Award (Best college football player)

Aaron Donald — Bednarik Award (Best defensive player)

Hubie Graham — John Mackey Award (Tight End

Ryan Turnley — Rimington Trophy (Center)

The Maxwell and Bednarik watchlists have 65 names each. The Mackey has 33 names and Rimington lists 51 names on their respective watchlists.

Like I said, the awards at least get some attention.

I find it interesting the the award for best center has 51 names but the award for tight ends only has 33. Only one center can be on the field at once but there could be up to 3 tight ends. Most teams use 2 even if not in a traditional sense (one is called an H-back for example). Me thinks the Rimington should just name every center, they are nearly there with almost 43% of the centers on the list.

all on this list are Wanny recruits, but I guess we should blame him for not having anyone on the Jim Thorpe or Biletnikoff watch lists

I stopped giving a $-hit about watchlists the year Tino was named to the O’Brien watchlist.

Who wants to tabulate how many Whisky players were on watchlists and correlate that to wins compared to Pitt?

You mean Pitt’s Tino didn’t make any watch lists this year. Maybe that’s a good thing and he will pleasantly surprise us. But if there was a watch list for frustrating quarterback play, he’d be right at the top based on last year’s performance.

The player list above is impressive. Next year, Pitt needs to have a linebacker, cornerback, wide receiver and quarterback as additions to that list. Pitt should be represented in every position if the coaches are doing their jobs recruiting elite talent and ensuring players reach their full potential.

not trying to offend you in any way… but that list has got to be one of the most ridiculous things i have read in a long time… what a waste of that “journalist’s” time… how informative: Ball States HC is never going to lead them to the National Championship… imagine that

it’s all about hits and selling ads .. that’s what the internet has become all about. This is why there are 52 slides instead of just one page with a list of 50 coaches … it’s all advertising … and we in the US just love our lists (just ask Letterman)

In other news, check out Chris Dokish’s writeup of Alex Van Pelt. His numbers weren’t that much worse than Tino’s. Maybe Tino makes this list in five years?

ESPN College Today (or whatever they call it)did a piece on the watch lists today and did not mention a single Panther.

ESPN is all about the big names … SEC, Oklahoma, Texas, Tebow, Favre, Lebron, Kobe, Yankees, Red Sox, Manning, Brady, Coach K, … in all sports. 10% of the teams or players get 90% of the coverage.
