Football Start Times

Well the gods have spoken for at least a few more games. ESPN has announced the start times for a slew of games, including 3 more Pitt games.

Previously unknown start times for VT-Pitt, Gardner-Webb-Pitt and Pitt-Buffalo have been set. So, here’s how the schedule now looks.

2012 Pitt Football Schedule

Date Opponent (TV) Time
Sept. 1 Youngstown State (ESPN3) 6 p.m.
Sept. 6 (Thurs.) @ Cincinnati* (ESPN) 8 p.m.
Sept. 15 Virginia Tech (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU) Noon
Sept. 22 Gardner-Webb (ESPN3) 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 29 Open
Oct. 5 (Fri.) @ Syracuse* (ESPN) 7 p.m.
Oct. 13 Louisville* TBA
Oct. 20 @ Buffalo (Big East Network) 3:30 p.m.
Oct. 27 Temple* TBA
Nov. 3 @ Notre Dame (NBC) 3:30 p.m.
Nov. 9 (Fri.) @ Connecticut* (ESPN2) 8 p.m.
Nov. 17 Open
Nov. 24 Rutgers* TBA
Dec. 1 @ South Florida* (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2) TBA

Frustrating to see that the VT game is a noon start. If that game is a nooner, I’m not holding out much hope that the other 4 open times — which includes half of Pitt’s home games — will be anything but nooners.

But at least Gardner-Webb gets to be a 3:30 start. Least they can do with 1-AA games, extra tailgating time.

it wuld seem to me that both the Ville and Rutgers games have a chance to be BE games of the week. If so, the good is that they will be televised; the bad is that they will be noon starts.

As I have often mentioned before … just remember that Iowa, Wisconsin and the B12 teams often have 11 am starts (noon eastern).

It all depends on us. If we are battling for a BCS Bowl our last 2 games should be night games

Comment by Tony C 06.07.12 @ 4:30 pm

Outside of VT this home schedule is a joke. Outside of ND on the road and the road schedule is terrible. If you gave me 50 guesses I couldn’t tell you where Gardner Webb is… Youngstown State is D I AA right. With this schedule we should win 8-9 games. The move to the ACC can’t come fast enough.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.07.12 @ 4:40 pm

Being a seasoned tailgater, 5 hours is 5 hours. I wish the lots opened earlier for later games, but my crew is used to drilling breakfast at 7 am.

Comment by pendlum 06.07.12 @ 5:10 pm

If we win one game that we should not win we are 8 and 4 on the year .
But i think we go 7 and 5 unless tino is tino then
it is 6 and 6.

Comment by Frankcan 06.07.12 @ 6:55 pm

tino = mediocre Reserve your seats for Birmingham where your 7-5 panthers take on the 8-4 Temple owls!!!

Comment by Coach Ditka 06.07.12 @ 7:33 pm

Those two teams are in the same conference now smartass

Comment by Pk 06.07.12 @ 8:53 pm

Are you guys serious that Tino will see any reps let alone start. He wouldn’t be a third stringer in any conference in America except the Big East. If he is the best we have then our program is in a very sad state.

Comment by Upittbaseball 06.07.12 @ 9:56 pm

Like i said if tino is tino than 6 and 6 but the coach is goin to be great i just know it so 7 and 5 or 8 and 4 if we can steal a game becuse of good coaching. Not becuse of tino but becuse of the coach he is worth a win or two i have faith in the coach.

Comment by Frankcan 06.07.12 @ 10:08 pm

Pk dont be rude he knows were temple plays he is just haveing fun but he is most likley right birmingham is were we end up.
or the beef o brady bowl. or the one in new york
what is it called the pine strip bowl or something like that.
cant wait till we move to the ACC has was said to
pharaoh let my people go.

Comment by Frankcan 06.07.12 @ 10:20 pm

IF Pitt is doing well late in the season, those nooners will get pushed back

Comment by Yup 06.07.12 @ 10:37 pm

i dont want to be rude but i dont appreciate someone mocking pitt on a pitt board. thats like inviting a friend over your house and he insults your mothers cooking. it annoys me

Comment by pk 06.08.12 @ 12:14 am

I know I’m in the minority but I don’t tailgate and I like the noon kickoffs.

Comment by JLE 06.08.12 @ 12:27 am

Oh, joy. Several games with Beth Mowins on play-by-play.

Any chance she might be on maternity leave in the fall?

Comment by Mailman 06.08.12 @ 12:48 am

If we had a real QB we could run the table, with the exception of VT. I see a frustrating year where we could go 6-6 (Frankcan hit the nail on the head) or better depending. Its a shame that none of our QB’s have the will or talent to step up. I was really bummed that Meyers didn’t step up in spring camp. I just don’t get it. I hope PC can pull of kind of miracle with his game planning. I’m considering buying scotch in bulk, I’m afraid that this season could be tough on my liver.

Comment by IH8PITT 06.08.12 @ 6:53 am

Mailman, beth mowins isnt doing games anymore! Lol lets see who they find to replace her.

Comment by Pk 06.08.12 @ 7:46 am

As for the qb situation, one thing that can change the whole dynamic is tom savage’s eligibility. Hes at pitt right now as a walk-on. I thought that walk-ons dont have to sit a year? Tom savage had a very good freshman year at rutgers so if he hasnt regressed since then, he would at least challenge tino for the job.

With that said, tino wont be nearly as bad as you guys are saying. Hell be in his sophomore form but with much better coaching. With pitts running backs, a huxtable defense with a great deal of young talent on that side of the ball, and a creampuff schedule, pitt wins 8/9 games. Honestly-your logic of tino so .500 is beyong me. 6-6 last year with that staff, all the system changes, and a good schedule but only 6-6 this year with chryst at the helm, familiar system that hides players imperfections, and a creampuff schedule yet they dont win more games? My mind=blown

Comment by Pk 06.08.12 @ 8:00 am

funny how everyone forgot that Tino won 8 games 2 years ago against a stronger schedule than this coming year’s. It totally fucking amazes me how everyone attributes this past season’s failures all to the QB and none to the coaching.

Comment by wbb 06.08.12 @ 8:38 am

I agree == last year was a complete cluster @#$%! This team should be able to run the ball & lessen the pressure & need for Tino to make the big play. We need to give Tino a break & support this kid! He is your PITT PANTHERS starting QB. The schedule sets up nicely -if- the Panthers can win that Thursday night game against Ciny. Hail To PITT

Comment by DC33 06.08.12 @ 8:59 am

It’s all a guess (sometimes educated) as to where we will finish this year but I am excited for potentially seeing PROGRESS as the season goes on. I do think PC will TEACH the game of football and I do think we will see player development. I have no inside source to the program but I’ve read and heard countless times how the past regime lacked the teaching aspect of the game and how players were just as confused at the end of the year as they were at the start – which was obvious by the execution on the field. Granted players have to take some responsibility for the team’s performance but I think we will see a night-and-day difference in the coaching as the season develops. HTP!

Comment by JAM 05 Pitt 06.08.12 @ 9:06 am

PK – it doesn’t matter if Savage is a walk-on or on scholarship, the NCAA rule is that when transferring from one program to another he has to sit out a year.

I understand that he has an appeal into the NCAA based on his not playing by taking a redshirt last season but he was enrolled and on the football roster at Arizona so that waiver may not be granted.

wbb – I agree. Sunseri is a lightning rod when it comes to criticism of our 2011 season. It is ridiculous to look at our season as a whole and point only to the QB.

Upittbaseball – not only will Sunseri see reps he’ll start. The only thing that might change that, IMO, is if Savage gets his waiver to play in 2012 at PITT. Even then he’ll have to beat out Sunseri and that isn’t a slam dunk at all. Savage’s best year, 2009, at RU wasn’t any better than Sunseri’s 2010 year at PITT. As a matter of fact Sunseri had a 10 point better QB rating.

Sunseri has a terrible arm period. Vince Lombardi could coach this team and it wouldn’t make an ounce of difference. He CANNOT throw the ball more than 20 yards, defenses will stack against the run and force tiny under pressure. Its a losing formula no matter what system or coach.

Once Tino is gone, I have all the faith in the world that PC can turn this team around and good things will happen. Until then prepare for another worthless uninspiring bowl appearance at maybe 7-5.

Comment by Coach Ditka 06.08.12 @ 11:31 am

Too early for prediction methinks, but if Tino is the starter (which is a 90% likelihood) not expecting much improvement over last year. Sorry, but reality is reality, he’s just not talented enough to win consistently in D1 (and asking PC to turn this glass of water into wine is too much to ask). I’ll be in my yellow seat hoping that I am totally wrong, but . . . .
Only hope is defense is good enough (like Pirate pitching this year) to steal a game or two and overcome the offensive limitations. Don’t know anything about Huxtable, is he a good enough coach to pull this off?

6-6 no bowl sounds about right. Just not a good program. Time for Chryst to clean up this mess

Another article on Graham. Is it just me or is the media starting to be taken in by him again?

This schedule is incomplete!

It’s missing the January 5th, 2013 BBVA Compass Bowl….

CoachDitka, you are over exagerrating. Tino is not the second coming of Marino by any means, and while he is awful with the long ball, he’s shown over the last couple of years that he’s capable of being effective in the <30 yard range, at least when the O-line is actually blocking and he's not trying to run FraudGraham's idiotic Keystone Cops offense.

Unfortunately, the previous two coaches insisted on running offenses that depend on hitting the home run ball all the time, knowing darn well that skill wasn't in Tino's bag. If you can consistently complete 10-15 yard passes on first or second down, you can burn a team that stacks the box all day long, so I don't see that as an issue. There have been a slew of good teams over the years that generated tons of offense based entirely on running and short passing. That sort of scheme plays right into the skills of the players that we can put on the field right now, including Tino.

So, if Chryst actually runs an offense this year based on the strengths of the QB and doesn't depend on him to constantly do the things he's clearly not good at (i.e., deep ball, running the option) like Wanny and Fraud, then Tino will probably surprise a lot of people. Hopefully, that will be the case.

Like someone said previously, Chryst is actually the first good offensive mind we've had here since Walt Harris. Wanny and Fraud couldn't coach offense to save their lives, and I was never impressed with any of their coordinators. I'd like to see us have more complete QBs in the future, but for now, people need to lay-off Tino a bit and hope that the new coach decides to actually put him in a position where he is likely to succeed, instead of the one the last two put him in. Think back to Bill Stull – the guy couldn't hit a fade if his life depended on it, but Cavanaugh kept calling it in the red zone over and over again. So, you can't really blame Bill for those losses. The situation with Tino isn't that much different. Remember, these are college kids, not professional draft choices, and you have to be able to make the best out of the players you get.

Recruiting talk anyone? Robert Foster tweets top 7. We’re still in it, and we still get no love from the national media. Would make it all that much sweeter if we nab him.

theOtherSteve, I see your point however I haven’t seen much evidence that Tino is even accurate enough to hit the short passes consistently. Most passers that cant throw throw the long ball can throw the short ball very precise and consistent and yes in those situations the short passing game can work. I just dont see it with Tino. the second he senses pressure all bets are off and don’t think for a second the opposing coaches don’t know it. They will bring every blitz imaginable to rattle him and dare him to beat them down the field.

I truly truly hope I am wrong and Tino shows me otherwise but after 3 years I have little faith in him to get the job done.

Comment by Coach Ditka 06.08.12 @ 7:19 pm

amen brother

Comment by Frankcan 06.08.12 @ 8:19 pm

Personally, I think most of you have it all wrong.

While Tino has his physical limitations, they are not as severe as some here believe.

Rather, his biggest problem is mental. He can’t be counted on to lead the team late when the game is on the line. The closest thing to a victory he can claim in that department is South Florida 2010.
That’s my problem with him.

That said, to think that him starting guarantees a 6-6 or 7-5 season is dumb. Give last year’s team this schedule and they go 8-4. And again, that was with the system change and all the injuries.

If this year’s team goes 7-5 or worse, we have bigger problems than Tino Sunseri.

Comment by originalether 06.08.12 @ 9:14 pm

Ether is correct. Sunseri’s physical talents, save the deep pass, are fine. It is above the shoulders that killed him last season.

Ditka – Sunseri has had a 64% completion rate in both the last two years. That is very good and, contrary to some PITT fan’s beliefs they all weren’t three yard passes. He was 41st in passing last year and his yards per completion was 10.59 which also isn’t too shabby either.
