I’ll get to more on the increasingly insane latest bit of expansiopocolypse and what it means for Pitt in a bit. This is just a short thing that’s been gnawing at me.

One of my dad’s favorite cliches that he reaches for when trying to decide on a big economic thingĀ  — buying a new car, moving, changing jobs, replacing large appliances, etc. — is: “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.” My father, as you can imagine, is very financially conservative.

That phrase, though, keeps echoing in my head as expansiopocolypse continues. Albeit in a flipped on its head to be: “Better the devil you don’t, than the devil you know.” Everyone is completely willing willing to risk the devil they don’t know for the money. And because they feel that they know the devil they know just that well.

Beyond the money there is no football school in the Big East that wouldn’t run screaming to another conference, because they know that Providence-based leadership just that well by now. They know how incompetent, late to react, and how little they actually care about football — and thus the conference doesn’t provide any help, support or growth for the football schools. If the Big East was able to get $20 million/year for football schools I would still want Pitt out of that conference.

The Big 12 has seen 4 members leave in the last couple years. So sick of a conference structure that was dominated by the wants and desires of Texas. Everyone of them on the way out the door has made it clear that the problem was with Texas. Even if, ultimately, the money per school between the Big 12, the Big 10, the Pac-12 and the SEC will all end up being surprisingly close. The only way the Big 12 has stayed together — beyond simply because Texas and Oklahoma have decided to stay — is with a shotgun pushed in the back of all schools with the grant of rights. The system by which all member schools give their TV rights to the conference for the duration, regardless of whether they are part of the conference or not. A nuclear-level stick to keep the teams in place.

At the same time, because of Texas and Oklahoma are such football schools, the money for the conference keeps rolling regardless of the instability and absolutely no other marquee programs/markets. Making it easier than anyone would have thought to bring in new members from rival conferences. To the point where FSU, Clemson, Miami and Virginia Tech fans are all saying, “Yeah, Big 12! Sure it’s geographically awkward. Sure we keep hearing these things about Texas. Yeah, we’d rather go to the SEC, and if we sign with the Big 12 we are tied for over a decade regardless. But the money is good, and we can make it work. Besides, we’re football schools and that is what the Big 12 is about.”

Those ACC schools are obviously wanting to make sure they get the bigger money. Afraid of being left behind. But they also speak — a lot — of the problems with the devil they know in the ACC. The leadership beholden to the North Carolina/basketball power structure.

ugh .. not this again !

There is so much disinformation and just plain old greed out there when it comes to FBS schools in the big 5. It is still being perpetuated at FSU/others because its about money full freakin stop.

FSU aint freakin jumpin. The detriments of jumping to the little big 12 would keep their football program in mediocrity. How many fans want to travel to TX, OK, OK ST, Kansas and/or Iowa? Yes if they are in the same division as TX/OK those would be some great games but those teams are regular top 10 programs. FSU at this point aint a regular top ten program. It makes no sense for FSU to cut its ties to schools in the SE/ACC to go to the little big 12 pond that has two big fish with one carrying the cards to beat the others in line.

I would be totally shocked if FSU jumped. Remember that all of the schools that left the little big 12 did it for a reason. Texas wanted them to be their bitc*es/lap dogs. In the little big 12 its the Texas way or hit the highway. FSU IS NOT JUMPING…

After the Commonwealth of Virginia weighed in to get VA Tech in the ACC to be paired with UVA over Cuse during the previous ACC raid of the Big East; there is zero chance VA Tech is going anywhere. Virginia funding of Virginia Tech’s academic programs and infrastructure (even after recent economy related cuts) dwarfs the FB revenue increases a B12 move could ever generate.

Comment by pitt1972 05.21.12 @ 11:15 am

The ironic thing here is that Pitt was rumored to be in talks with the Big 12 a year ago just as the season was starting…before the ACC announcement, before TCU bailed, and long before WVU left. If SP had any spine at all he’d be in touch with Ollie Luck (as much as that hurts to say) right now trying to gain help in securing an invite under the premise of us providing a travel partner and an instant 100+ year old rivalry to the Big 12. I say go ahead and bail on the ACC just like TCU did on the BE. Unfortunately, Pitt is too often worried about saving face and appearing to be the “nice guy”. I’m sure we’re headed to the ACC, or should we call it the Big East of 10 years ago?

Comment by pitt99 05.21.12 @ 11:33 am

Miami is more cash strapped than FSU. Unless they have someone willing to pony up the $20M exit fee, I don’t see them going anywhere either.

Is this the moment that Notre Dame finally picks a conference? If so, can they really be interested in the Big 12? I guess so for the right money…This seems to be a crucial moment for the ACC….can they land the big remaining catch in ND despite the bowl agreement between the Big 12 and SEC? And will the ACC be relegated to being the BCS outsider alongside the Big Least? I sure hope not….

Comment by CJK 05.21.12 @ 11:47 am

I think of all FBS schools, Notre Dame is hyper-sensitive to their desire to remain a “national player”, not only as a football program, but as an institution as well. Although rationality has very little to do with any of these machinations, I find it really hard to comprehend how Notre Dame decides it wants to regionalize itself through a conference affiliation primarily in the Midwest or Southwest. If that was their desire, they could have joined the more prestigious and traditional B1G years ago. Do you really think the Catholic Church has any desire to tie itself to areas like Lubbock Texas and Ames Iowa? Manhattan maybe…but the New York variety, not Kansas. Not to mention the continuous dick measuring between Notre Dame and Texas might actually cause the Earth to rotate off its axis and spin us all into outer space.

Comment by ECH 05.21.12 @ 12:12 pm

After giving careful thought to all of the possibilities, I’ve come to the conclusion, that Pitt will end up back in the Big East!!! LOL!!!

Good Lord, Nordy and Stevie finally do one right, and this crap happens.

I would like to think everyone is staying put, but some of the stuff out there, makes you wonder.

Yes, anyone can post anything, but a lot of people think FSU to Big 12 was a done deal before, now, the nail in the coffin.

I myself thought the 20M exit fee would be a deterent, but several articles out there say that’s just an inconvenience if Texas and the Big12 really want them. They’ll loan them the money to get out just like they did with WVU and they have coffers of cash to do it.

Nordy and Steve gotta feel like SCHLEPROCK!! I know I do!! LOL

Maybe nothing will happen. Ya, right!!

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 12:39 pm

It is very sad for grown men to fret and worry about this rumor which has no foundation. But again no team’s fans feel sure of their team’s future. It is inane to get worked-up over this ESPECIALLY when there are no hard facts out there to validate it. Just internet rumor from fans, bloggers and the sports media. The latter’s MO is creating hype for those who are ensnared by all of this speculation. Why do they love it? Its because they know fans on blogs will perpetuate it…….you know said fans of college football will watch/listen and all without using their brains…they are playing fans for suckers…

Comment by Kenny 05.21.12 @ 1:07 pm

Chas, sorry to nitpick one thing out of the whole post but can we please stop saying that the leadership doesnt care about football? They do, as does EVERY school and conference. Everyone knows where the money is. It’s not that the providence BE offices dont care, it’s just that they’re incompetent at dealing with football issues.

Sorry, it just burns my ass anytime anyone even hints that any football program might be getting slighted or deserves any sympathy. Football rules the roost across the country — and the other sports must change conference, traditions etc at football’s whim.

Its the way of the world and I’m at peace with it. I’m a Pitt football fan, dont get me wrong. I’m just a a b-ball first guy who, like a lot of non-football first people have been politely, patiently watching changes occur that we (basketball people) have no say in whatsoever.

We’re being good sports about it. But we’re practically prostrate over here, please dont make us bow even lower by having to pretend football gets slighted by the BE and deserves any sympathy.

*steps off soap box, sheepishly leaves area*

Comment by PantherP 05.21.12 @ 1:18 pm

Pitt will stay with the ACC regardless of who leaves,………….Because they know the Devil ib the Big East. He lives in Providence and with the BE Basketball only schools. As for Notre Dame they be joining the ACC, Big 12, or the Big Ten because they have alumni who are delusional and harken back to the days of Knute Rockne rather than except the realities of college football today. Notre Dame could have saved the Big East anytime by joining with completely and bringing their football. Their basketball program benefitted greatly from being in the Big East and the conference gave them a place for their olympic sports to thrive. Instead they looked after their own interests and then criticised Pitt and Syracuse for doing the same.

Comment by Justinian 05.21.12 @ 1:18 pm

correction – Notre Dame won’t be joining the ACC, Big 12 or Big Ten.

Comment by Justinian 05.21.12 @ 1:21 pm

@Kenny, first point. Don’t know any grown men fretting and worrying about this.

This is extremely minor compared to life, family and work.

However, as this is a college football blog, most people will give opinions on the certain subject matter that Chas posts for us.

This post is about the recent developments over the past few days, and some of us are commenting our opinions about it. That’s all, no big deal.

SECOND POINT. I hope you’re right, and everything just stays the same.

You are correct about internet bloggers and people pushing their agenda on the internet. Yes, a lot of it could be nothing more than b.s..

There have also been many example of where there is smoke there is fire. (Texas A&M, Missouri, Utah, Colorado, WVU, TCU)

Nebraska, Pitt and Syracuse, no one saw coming.

I can only speak for myself, but no fretting or worrying here. Just some b.s.’ing during some lulls in the day.

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 1:32 pm

p.s. Everyone knows I was kidding about the Big East, right???

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 1:33 pm

@Kenny. Also, allthough I mentioned the rumors that have been out there, I should mention, my thoughts mostly are from the latest SEC-BIG 12 agreement.

I mean, it’s not rocket science to figure out, that if the ACC is left out of a “Big 4”, nor given a chance to compete in a playoff, I believe some “football” schools would definitely be looking to be included in one the the Big 4 conferences.

Also, if those conferences are where gigantic payouts to top tier bowls, semi-finals and final games are, and say the ACC champion gets a second tier bowl, then they’d be looking also.

I get your point, it’s all speculation. But, brother, that’s what these blogs are for right, to bs to each other on subjects.

Hail to Pitt, and a good day to you!!

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 1:39 pm

Sorry Dan. I already jumped off the bridge. In the hospital now as I type.

This instability has me worried.

What does the ACC leadership need to do to prove that football comes first in the conference?

Maybe Swofford needs to be replaced with a non-NC football guy. Maybe the ACC HQ’s needs to be moved from Greensboro. Maybe the schools get to keep all their bowl money.

Something has to change.

I don’t want to go back to the Big Least.

Comment by TX Panther 05.21.12 @ 1:50 pm

The ACC has FSU, Miami, VT, Clemson and GT. We’re not getting left out

Comment by Tony C 05.21.12 @ 1:54 pm

The ACC has those teams today. I’m worried about what the ACC will look like tomorrow without them.

Comment by TX Panther 05.21.12 @ 2:24 pm

If the ACC turns into the Big East I’m tuning out until basketball season every year like a Duke fan. Hell, I’ll probably completely tune out of college football, like before I attended college (as would most of the Northeast) and had no idea what Pitt even was (I’m from Jersey).

Comment by Chris 05.21.12 @ 2:32 pm

Ya Tx, just when you get comfortable, thought we’d have 5 or 10 years of enjoying the ACC.

I’m not chicken little either. Hopefully the ACC all stays together.

A lot will have to do with the playoff format. If they say the 4 conference champs are in the semi-finals, then there are going to be problems.

I forget who, but someone on here that knows a bit about law, said, they’ll have to leave a slot open, or lawsuits from the other 60 teams will be coming against the “Big 4” conferences. Don’t know how true that is.

If they leave a slot, then it’s up to the individual teams to go undefeated and get in the top 4 rankings.

That will be another topic. Who is doing the rankings in the future?? How will they determine that??

What really would stink, is if FSU and Clemson would go. Those are probably the two teams I wanted to see the most at Heinz.

Maybe it is all hot air. A lot of money on the table to be in the Big 4 though.

Hope I’m wrong.

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 2:33 pm

Dan no sweat my Pitt friend. I know its a blog and people express opinions but its not in my character to worry over unsubstantiated information. Personally believe the rumors pertaining to this matter were started by fans blogging and it is being perpetuated by…….Texas. They need some more bitc*es to grovel at their feet, of course it helps if said bitc*es open up new revenue markets for em…

Ya, we’re good Kenny. I know what you meant. I think the first rumor was even started by a WVU fan stirring things up.

I don’t even care if we aren’t in the “Big 4”. I love the ACC. Just don’t want to lose anyone before we even start playing them.

Your points are well taken. A lot of bs out there.

Comment by Dan 05.21.12 @ 5:01 pm

@Kenny, hey, please don’t let my retort above stop you from posting. Good to see people on here. I haven’t seen you post much, wouldn’t want to be the one that scared you off.

Good to have lots of opinions. Hey, you might not have seen me too much either, kinda of hit and miss during the summer.

Have a good evening.

Let’s go, Rangers!

Comment by steve1 05.21.12 @ 6:05 pm

Like i said on the outher post if the ACC loses 2 teams say FSU and VT and they are replaced bye 2 teams from the big east. we will be more like the big east of last year than the big east of this year it will be big east one and big east two
with bouth strong in BB and weak in football and we will be screwed agein.

Comment by Frankcan 05.21.12 @ 7:19 pm

VT is not going anywhere. ACC should replace with whoever leaves with UCONN and RU.

Play hoops tourney in MSG and set up game against ND if ND does not play for NC (and they won’t). If not ND, then play PAC 12.

Quit whining guys…it’s our move…always want the last move.

Comment by SFPitt 05.21.12 @ 8:11 pm

Frankcan–VT goes nowhere! The Commonwealth of Virginia has UVA and Tech locked together like Siamese twins. Both are far far more heavily dependent on state funding than any of the PA universities. UVA had to vote to admit VT to the ACC or potentially suffer draconian cuts in state $$s. For the same reason VT can now never leave the ACC without UVA going along. Any FB $$s are chickenfeed compared to the $$s they get from Richmond.

Comment by pitt1972 05.21.12 @ 8:18 pm

pitt1972 that was not the point i just thru vt out there the point was if two teams leave SAY FSU AND THE U SAME THING IT DOES NOT MADDER WHICH TWO THAN WE BRING IN TWO FROM THE BIG EAST THEN WE ARE BIG EAST ONE AND BIG EAST 2 . YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN NOW LESTS HOPE NO ONE LEAVES
WE WOULD HAVE MORE BIG EAST TEAMS THAN THE BIG EAST ORGINAL TEAMS ANY WAY .

Comment by Frankcan 05.21.12 @ 8:48 pm

sorry abought the caps was typeing with out looking at the screen

Comment by Frankcan 05.21.12 @ 8:50 pm

Frankcan–OK on VT.

On the other hand, I don’t really care who leaves the ACC. As long as it has no basketball-only members and is East Coast centered, IMO it is still the best place for Pitt.

The only non-East Coast centric league I wouldn’t be unhappy to see Pitt a member of is the Big 10 because there are enough teams physically close enough to Pittsburgh in that league (PSU, OSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, and Northwestern) for it to make some reasonable geographic sense. The B12 makes no sense at all unless, IMO, unless it were to add a slew of teams closer to Pitt like Rutgers, Cincinnati, Louisville so that an entire easternmost division (with WVU and Cuse) could be created.

A hypothetical better opportunity to contend for the MNC in a conference with Texas and Oklahoma makes absolutely no sense to me regardless of money because the route to the MNC game really would not be easier because of the tougher competition.

Comment by pitt1972 05.21.12 @ 9:10 pm

Dan….if you are going to turn yourself into a
“White” album zombie, put on the headphones, get the pipe out of storage and listen to Lennon shred his guitar on ‘Back in the USSR’!
best Lennon guitar work ever!

Comment by SFPitt 05.21.12 @ 9:55 pm

SFPitt have the complete box set of every Beatles albums along with 2 past master cds. They are all loaded on my IPOD and you would have to pry the set out of my cold dead hands to get it away from me.

Now if I was in bad funk like some over Pitt football, I would listen to Grand Funk Railroad’s song “Walk Like A Man”, Two songs Robin Trower’s “Bridge of Sighs” album and Cream’s “Strange Brew”.

GFR’s “Walk Like A Man” would instruct me to buck-up and quit whining.

link to youtube.com

Trower’s “Too Rolling Stoned” would remind not to get too high if you now what I mean.

link to youtube.com

Trowers “Little Bit of Sympathy” would be a clarion call to the “Star/Recruitnics” to give me a little sympathy and calm down the rhetoric.

link to youtube.com

Finally, Cream’s “Strange Brew” is an elixir which will kill the “Star/Recruitnics'” need to fret over things they cannot control anyways.

link to youtube.com

Of course a few Real Brews aint too bad either in fighting the fretting disease but don’t drink to much or you will just start again…
