Local Coverage Skips CBI

Guess it sums up the CBI. Both the Trib and P-G did not bother sending their beat reporters to the Pitt-Butler game. So, the articles from each paper were written by Indiana-based freelancers.

why the lack of coverage? could you see NC and Duke not getting any coverage if they were in this tourney? even though its been a bad season by pitt standards, its still Pitt hoops that is playing…i was glad to see butler fans show up for the game, hopefully we will get more then 2000.

The Post Gazette article was such a piece of garbage that it didn’t even mention who Pitt’s next opponent will be. Either the writer forgot this piece of information or the PG edited it out. It’s such an obviously thing to mention.

Let me assist:

Next up for Pitt is (fill in the blank).

or

Pitt will now face the winner of (Team X vs. Team Y).

While I’m on the subject I’d also like to say the PG’s new online format is awful and Zeise has been AWOL. OK, I’ll stop moaning.

Got to keep costs down. It could be the Pitt beat writers are still going to cover the Sweet 16 and can’t do both. And heck, if half of the Pitt squad didn’t bother to show up last night than why should a writer. That was really one of the hardest games I have ever watched. Doesn’t rank up there with the Rutgers game but with a healthy team it was one of the hardest to watch.

Is there a stat for “Most shots blocked?” I would assume Nas has set a record for having his shot blocked in one season. I know he has knee troubles and is undersized but how about a pump fake?

Comment by bdubb 03.22.12 @ 7:55 am

The Gazette and Trib are pathetic. They’ve never covered the University, except to throw the football team under the bus.

So it’s Pitt vs. Washington State in a best of three series. I hope Pitt Pride prevails. I’m don’t think Gibbs is into this tournament. What a shame. There is definaty a chemistry problem with this team.

An observation from last nights game — Jamie was drawing up a play on the white board and Gibbs wasn’t even looking at Jamie and seemed to be somewhere other than in the game.

I hope Pitt wins but I still believe, unless returning players play most of the minutes, this tournament is not worth much.

Wow. That’s pathetic. This is the local college team! The article in the Trib was far better than the one in the PG though.

Nice to see Pitt win that one. Now let’s finish this off and win the whole CBI! Why not?

Hey Mike —

Optics are everything, sometimes. Pitt had 2,000 turn out for the Princeton game. The Pete was an empty arena.

Butler last night – packed arena and big turnout, or so it looked to be on tv. Really, the game was played in a gym smaller than Fitzgerald when it hosted basketball (Fitzgerald held 6800). The attendance was only 3700.

As a Pitt fan im sick of having to act ashamed that I care about this CBI. Pitt’s playing so I’m watching and I care. What really got me mad last night was the FAN’s post-game.

Groat and Hillgrove called the game….as usual they were biased as hell and emotional…just the way I like them to be as the voice of Pitt Hoops. So they did their thing..two professionals and Pitt legends that make me proud to be a Pitt fan. As soon as the game’s over Chris Muller (or whatever his name is) is the next voice you hear giving a sarcastic, frat boy rant cutting up on the CBI and Pitt fans that give a crap about it. If you want to do that fine, but not immediately after the Hilly-Groat spills their guts out for 2 hours and it’s ESPECIALLY disrespectful coming from some amateur, bush-league, mid-night shift, two-bit hack like Muller or Andrew Filiponi.

THE FAN SUCKS AND PITT FANS SHOULD NEVER LISTEN TO IT WHEN Hillgrove isn’t on the mic.

FWIW, Pitt will now play Washington St, in a best of three format. Game 1 begins Monday (3/26), at Washington. Game 2 will be played Wednesday (3/28), in Philadelphia, as will Game 3, if needed.

Does anyone know anything about Washington St? Their statistics are average, at best, and don’t really have any notable wins this season.

Comment by Lou 03.22.12 @ 8:41 am

Lou – you mean Pittsburgh for games 2 and 3?

Comment by steve 03.22.12 @ 8:45 am

MariettaMike-

It does look like it was more of the returning players contributing-Zanna, Patterson, Moore, and Woodall. Nas did seem to get his share of minutes, but Gibbs being in there was almost a negative. It feels like Jamie has worked in the returning players into the CBI tourney, but has used his seniors for some stability.

As terrible a tournament as the CBI is, this was a great game. I will maintain forever that playing in this thing once invited was the right call. Not only is it a chance to play more basketball, but it’s just being honest about who and what Pitt basketball was this year.

Comment by pittbaster 03.22.12 @ 8:48 am

No, according to the CBI site, they’re playing games 2 & 3 in Philly. I haven’t discovered the location.

Comment by Lou 03.22.12 @ 8:49 am

According to Washington State web-site games 2 and 3 are at Pitt?

Comment by steve 03.22.12 @ 8:55 am

I take it back…Games 2 & 3 will be at Pitt. I don’t know how I read that incorrectly. Aging eyes. Playing in Philly would be silly.

Comment by Lou 03.22.12 @ 9:04 am

@Lou — Thanks. Hopefully, this tournament will have some redeeming value.

Comment by MariettaMike 03.22.12 @ 9:07 am

Thanks Lou

For what it’s worth, according to the Pitt-Butler program from last night, the home team has a large advantage in the CBI. Home teams win over 72% of the time:

Of course, the same program also suggested that Ashton Gibbs was a “player to watch” last night. I suppose that might’ve been true, if you wanted to watch a player contribute negligibly to their team’s effort.

boomer — could not agree more. Hated the post-game. Wish there was the usuall Hillgrove/Groat interview with the coach and players.

Chris Mueller (or whatever) is bush league and wated time talking about whether a banner should be hung or not rather than the game. Totally misses the point and like many a sport talk radio host, his logic is ridiculous. Anyway, who cares whether there is a banner (there won’t be). How about talking about how the leaders for next years team won this game for us, are still fighting and still see reasons to keep improving. Or maybe what does this mean for next year?

anyway, the fan after 6pm stinks unless its someone from the Pitt b-ball group — that includes Julius Page by the way who, while a complete homer (totally fine with me) is pretty savvy, and knows the game. MORE JULIUS PAGE, less these bush league frat boys like Mullen.

Comment by PantherP 03.22.12 @ 10:27 am

What business is the Post Gazette involved with? Never heard of it.
