Open Thread: CBI, Pitt-Butler

This game is on HDNet at 8pm. If you have DirecTV (and HD service) it is on channel 306.DISH is Channel 362. AT&T U-verse has it on Channel 1105.  Verizon FiOS is channel 569.  In the Pittsburgh area, Comcast/Xfinity appears to offer it on channel 897.

On the call for HDNet will be Kenny Rice and Keno Davis. Yes, the ex-Providence coach is on loan from the Big Ten Network. As for Rice, he generally handles horse racing and MMA. Shouldn’t be annoying at all.

I’m probably going to be running a bit behind on watching the game, so we’ll stick with the open thread.

So within 1 MINUTE the announcers brought up last year. I guess it was expected. Much like the fact that this game probably will be nothing like that. Go get em Pitt!

They did on radio too. If there is an elephant in the room, best to deal with him sooner rather than later.

Comment by SFPitt 03.21.12 @ 7:06 pm

I have comcast. Is it online? Or on the radio?

Pitt seems to be playing in mid-season form this 1st half. Start with a nice 2/3 and a little lead. Then they give up a bigger run to Bulter by playing shoddy defense and taking 3’s and turning the ball over. Ugly game out there.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 7:26 pm

Gilbert is in!! Almost a foul in 9 seconds, but given to Woodall instead.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 7:31 pm

Thanks.

Comment by CBC 03.21.12 @ 7:36 pm

horrible shooting or Pitt would be way ahead.

Comment by markp 03.21.12 @ 8:00 pm

Pitt’s defense is horrendous in the 2nd half. 2 open dishes for dunks and another easy pass for a lay-up. Inside defense is non-existent.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 8:12 pm

And the officiating is absolutely horrid. At this point we might as well just play Zanna, Moore, Wright, Johnson and Taylor and see how that goes.

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.21.12 @ 8:23 pm

I am going to add Bulter to my list of really annoying places to watch as a visiting fan. Every whistle blown against Bulter is drawing boo’s. They think they are angels apparently.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 8:26 pm

Gibbs and Robinson combined 1-15. See ya!

Comment by Tony C 03.21.12 @ 8:34 pm

Wondering how Pitt could be so hot in the 1st two games of this tournament and completely lay an egg the 1st time away from home. Hoping the players sticking around will use this for next year. Not sure how this is only a 6 point game. Gibbs and Naz aren’t scoring. Bench them for the rest of the game and see what we have for next year.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 8:38 pm

Can’t wait to get a true Center. Naz is getting used by their Center. Taylor/Zanna playing ok for Power forwards.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 8:43 pm

85 degrees in Indy today and no A/C in Hinkle. Butler is used to it but you can see Pitt is wilting.

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.21.12 @ 8:45 pm

that was a much longer 5 count than Pitt had at their end.

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.21.12 @ 8:47 pm

Tied at 52, Butler has the ball and may play for te last shot.

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 8:57 pm

Wow…a little flop a little trip up, but no doubt a foul called against Pitt. Ugly end to this game.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 9:00 pm

Pitt has 3.4 second for redemption in regulation.

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 9:01 pm

Going to OT

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 9:03 pm

Hoping for a little more defense in OT (doubtful) and maybe a point or two from Gibbs/Naz/Woodall

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 9:05 pm

Still no points from Gibbs. Pitt up by two, time winding down.

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 9:12 pm

Bill and Dick are pumped. It can only be a good sign.

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 9:12 pm

Pitt up by four, 37 seconds on the clock; Patterson to the FT line. Pitt now up by five

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 9:13 pm

Also they’re saying if we get the “W” it would be aganst “STEEP ODDS” (according to Bill Hilgrove.

I’m really curious what this means…. oh. Dick Groat seems to be really upset about the officiating being in Butler’s favor (and generally in a bad mood for maybe other reasons too).

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 9:16 pm

Pitt win?! i cant get feed!!!!!

Comment by Pitt it Is 03.21.12 @ 9:17 pm

Can’t wait to read a blog about how this win actually happened….

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 9:19 pm

on to the finals baby!!!!!!

Comment by Matt_Miklasevich 03.21.12 @ 9:19 pm

Woodall made two FTs, the JJ Moore, with two more, the Woodall with two more to seal it for Pitt. Just a sliver of redemption.

The panthers came back in a tough environment, on the road, and advance to the CBI championship game.

Comment by Lou 03.21.12 @ 9:20 pm

Yes Pitt it Is – Pitt won in OT by playing slightly better than Butler.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 9:20 pm

Jeez, after Moore fouled near the end of regulation, how many of the players instantly relived last season? Thankfully Pitt won

Comment by Greg 03.21.12 @ 9:21 pm

thanks silver. looks like we barely got there.

hnail to pitt

Happy days are here, or are they?

Comment by WLAT and the Big Beat 03.21.12 @ 9:23 pm

Thanks for posting the feed, SilverFox. enjoyed listening to the game. it is frustrating during the season that we can’t listen to the PITT feed from out of town, unless it’s on Sirius. good game in tough conditions.

Comment by nw pa pitt fan 03.21.12 @ 9:24 pm

REVENGE!!! hail to pitt

Comment by Kevin 03.21.12 @ 9:25 pm

another 20 win season!

Gibbs and Nas went 1-16?!?!?!? What !

I guess the good news is JJ, Talib and Lamarr were the guys that won this. ie next years team.

I really wish i knew more about what the heck happened here.

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 9:29 pm

and we didn’t have to pay to play this one.

I’m rambling and the fact that I’m excited about this win says that apparently this matters to me. (which says a lot of things about me…not good things. just things)…i’ve also been drinking (McClellands was on sale).

Comment by PantherP 03.21.12 @ 9:33 pm

Nice comeback thanks to JJ’s and Patterson’s guts.

Interesting how so few 3s were launched and so many picket fences built a la Chitwood.

Hackman would be proud.

Comment by steve1 03.21.12 @ 9:42 pm

Interested to see how the best of 3 format works for the playoffs. Players going from Pittsburgh and Oregon/Washington and maybe back again? Pretty unique experience.

Comment by SilverFox 03.21.12 @ 9:45 pm

Listened to the game over http://www.pittsburghpanthers.com Probably the only guaranteed way to hear it if out of town as they are not always on XM. Sounded like the type of officiating reserved for high school games. Butler missed some free throws down the stretch. H2P

Comment by Joe 03.21.12 @ 10:04 pm

Gibbs 0 for 8, no free throws, a few assists and a couple of turnovers. Those are awful, but real stats and reflect the season for him.
Anyone remember when he toyed with turning pro? I suspect everyone wishes he had. You cannot place all of the bad of this season at his feet, but his head and heart were never here.
It can’t be easy to coach a team lead by him.
Good job Pitt. Regardless of the season to date their is dignity in fighting the good fight; much like the Post Gazette continuing as a newspaper with no real journalists. Pitt has a future, not so with the PG.

Comment by SFPitt 03.21.12 @ 10:11 pm

Nice win by the Panthers, winning ugly is better than losing ugly. A little redemption is better than no redemption at all.

Pitt basketball has never won any kind of post-season tournament basketball championship. Baby steps, baby steps. At that seems to be the M-O of Pitt athletics, baby steps baby steps.

Let’s get our first national championship in whatever.

Hail to Pitt !
Veritas et Virtus !

Comment by Emel 03.21.12 @ 10:13 pm

wish Gibbs did leave, JD would have found a transfer or someone. If we had any guard play early on we would have won in regulation, in spite of the refs. Gibbs was just awful, maybe worse on defense. My favorite play of this entire season was Lamar’s stuff on their center in OT. When Lamar just plays ball, when he doesn’t think and just plays he’s a good player.

Comment by Old School Panther 03.22.12 @ 5:32 am

When these younger kids gain confidence, things just start clicking and the game comes to them. They think less and just react. Got to get the minutes and the right situations. That’s what this tourney is for and why they played. So yes the CBI is a bit of an embarassment but I’d rather play and get some carry over into next year. Good job Panther. H2P.

Comment by TX Panther 03.22.12 @ 6:20 am

I watched the entire game other than the first three minutes of overtime. When we got the foul called on us with 4 seconds in regulation, I literally got sick to my stomach. I can’t believe the Panthers tied the game and then I couldn’t bear to watch ot. I was thinking of the ’99 football loss to PSU, blowing a 21 point high ocatane lead to Iowa, losing to NC St. in fb a few years ago, Andrew Janoko, Furman, Scotty Reynolds, Jerry Macnamera, Trey and Tino throwing footballs, and I couldn’t bear to see a defeat. I’ve never been so emotionally spent during a sporting event. Suddenly in the middle of getting clothes ready for work, I heard, “three by Woodall.” I watched the end and feel a little justice. This may only be the CBI, but we won a close game in fb and bb for once. I woke up smiling…let’s win this damn thing.

Comment by AJ 03.22.12 @ 6:59 am

We benefited from the worst foul shooter I’ve ever seen, yes even worse than Nas or McGhee. He stopped his motion midway before releasing.

Bad coaching.

Comment by steve1 03.22.12 @ 7:15 am

I miss the Gibbs of 10-11.

Comment by velvil 03.22.12 @ 7:28 am

Dead-on assessment of Patterson, Old School. If he can consistently play with confidence next year, I think he’ll have a big season.

Zanna actually showed me something and finally appears to be improving.

I know he makes some dumb passes, but Wright plays good D and does a nice job of letting the offense come to him. I think there’s hope for him.

At one point I had some hope for Sleepy, but it’s faded.

Gilbert got, what, one 4-5 minute stretch maybe? Still perplexed by this.

Gibbs was just awful. It was hard to watch. Almost feel bad for him… almost.

Finally, can those who have coached tell me if there is any justification to have Woodall always being the throw-in guy? The other team puts a taller guy on him and he struggles to get it in. At least one turnover last night b/c of that and several other close calls.

Win’s a win. Bring on the west coasters.

Comment by Carmen 03.22.12 @ 8:47 am

In bounds will be worked on. We’ve been so good on that play historically, can’t believe such a basic play went from an asset to a liability. Guaranty JD’s got them working on that before the series.
