Open Thread: Princeton-Pitt

As with the last game, no TV. Given radio rules, there is no guarantee you can get a free stream on the Pitt flagship, 93.7 The Fan. The best bet is to go with the broadcast from Pitt radio, WPTS.

The competition improves a bit with Princeton. They, were capable of beating Rutgers.

Hopefully, Coach Dixon does give the younger kids more minutes as he said he should. Everyone needs the work.

Whe did Dixon say he should be giving the youger guys more mins?

Comment by Yup 03.19.12 @ 6:20 pm

Man…I wish Pitt could put up these leads and dominate the entire season. I think Princeton will fight back, as they have the shooters, but their defense was questionable at best and I think we are seeing that.

Comment by Pendlum 03.19.12 @ 6:38 pm

Right after the game with Wofford.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 03.19.12 @ 6:39 pm

Wow, who are these guys playing in white?

I am a diehard listening to the game in Dallas, I really thought this game would be a major struggle, looks like a big time blowout and it’s only halftime.

Comment by Jim from Dallas 03.19.12 @ 6:40 pm

Slow night so I decided to listen to the game (WPRB 103.3 Princeton). I must have the wrong game on because we are loaded with great shooters.

I am curious about how many people are at the Pete. From the sound of the crowd I am going to guess 3,500.

Comment by isnore 03.19.12 @ 6:45 pm

Any idea of the crowd number? BTW, who is this team, and what did they do with the team that turned the ball over every other possession? Only 1 turnover at the half

Comment by greg 03.19.12 @ 6:48 pm

So here’s how we get to the Final 4 next year: Discourage people from attending.

Comment by steve1 03.19.12 @ 6:58 pm

Having trouble with the internet radio feed. Can someone give me a score update? Thanks.

Robinson takes a 3 and misses. Uh oh

Comment by steve1 03.19.12 @ 7:21 pm

There has to be less that 10 minutes left, correct?

Comment by MTD23456 03.19.12 @ 7:27 pm

How refreshing, malcolm gilbert doesnt play, same for epps, and johnson and wright barely play. This is a joke.

Comment by Pk 03.19.12 @ 7:28 pm

68 – 55. 5 minutes or so left

Comment by steve1 03.19.12 @ 7:29 pm

Thanks Steve. This has a very familiar tone to it. Losing big leads.

Comment by MTD23456 03.19.12 @ 7:30 pm

It’s over, “Princeton running out of gas”

PK, it’s not about you.

Comment by steve1 03.19.12 @ 7:30 pm

80+ points, that is awesome. So, being superstitious, I have stayed home for these 1st two games. Do I break the streak and go to the next one or stay home to keep the streak going?

Comment by Pendlum 03.19.12 @ 7:40 pm

Gilbert is in the scoring column with one made FT!

Comment by Lou 03.19.12 @ 7:40 pm

I really thought Princeton would give Pitt fits tonight. Good game Panthers. Prove me wrong again.

Comment by TX Panther 03.19.12 @ 8:15 pm

die hard fan.. great to see the guys get more practice and game experience.. but wonder how much effort the teams in the CBI really give…. but a win’s a win and good teams should play hard.

Comment by snala the panther 03.19.12 @ 8:42 pm

I think we underestimate this team — i know. We over-estimated them so much at the beginning of the year, then our opinions dropped so much that they only could go up. Trey came back, all of a sudden we (including me) thought there was an outside chance of the NCAA tourny. Then we lost and our opinions plummetted so far that now maybe we’re back to underestimating? or something.

Main point – Pitt has by a significant margin the best RPI and Kenpom ranking of any team left in the CBI. Only Wyoming and Oregon State are within 20 of us.
Pitt – 73
Wyoming – 84
Oregon st – 88

Everyone else is in the 100s. So yeah. We may win this thing. Hooray ?

Comment by PantherP 03.19.12 @ 8:43 pm

Butler has a very good defensive team. Good rebounders. Terrible offense. And Pitt’s been bad on the road all year. To those who care, this one will be a toss up.

Comment by velvil 03.19.12 @ 9:17 pm

A slow night so I decided to go to the game. In typical Pitt fashion they were not prepared for the 500 or so of us who were trying to buy tickets. I stood there for about 30 minutes before I could get in, by that time there was 11 minutes left in the half. They sent us to another gate and that computer went down and they would not leave you in. Wouldn’t you think that they would have tickets printed and just collect 20 bucks from everyone (even though they should haveleft everyone who wantedto go infor free). No I had to stand there while the computer printed out my ticket.

Now for the game. I got to see Gibbs and Robinson play for at least 25 of the 30 minutes of the game when i was there. Gilbert got in with 1:59 to play and Epps gotin for about 20 seconds. Here again when they moved Gibbs to the point things slowed down and Princeton made a run. Another interesting thing. In the first half Princeton scored 25 points and made 7 3 pointers. In the second half they figutred out that they could muscle Pitt inside and we had a hard time stopping them.

I thought I was going to see the young guys play but it appears Dixon is coaching this like he is in the Final 4.

Comment by JP 03.19.12 @ 9:19 pm

Winning against Princeton – a 20 win team – helps build for next year. Especially with Lamar and Tray leading the scoring. H2P

Comment by Joe 03.19.12 @ 9:19 pm

so who and what time is the next gm…any chance on tv

Comment by teezy 03.19.12 @ 9:21 pm

Pitt certainly would of had it’s problems this year, uncontested turnovers by the backcourt and Robinson that made them appear weaker on defense then they were and created those terrible offensive games (turnovers create uncontested layups and limit the number of offensive opportunities). This a yearly problem for Pitt I am going to blame this phenonmenon on the coaching.

The major mistake that hurt Pitt this year was not recruiting a center since 2008. Playing fowards as centers worked well against the non-conference schedule. The center does not have to score but he must limit the number of scores by the opponent in the paint.

Pitt may have outrebounded its opponents but it gave up twice as many points in the paint then it scored. You can not play with the big boys with a convertted 6’9″ forward at center and a 6’5″ SF. Today this is smaller than many high school teams.

I blame this on Dixon. A McGhee who would not be hard to recruit in 2009-2011 would have chaned 6 to 8 games.

Comment by drw 03.19.12 @ 9:31 pm

Question? Do these games count so that Pitt can get a 20 game win season through the back door?

Comment by drw 03.19.12 @ 9:47 pm

So you are just going to keep posting that crap until someone agrees with you? Like in every single thread? Because by now you must realize that they recruited a McDonald’s All-American to play center, which is easier to play than power forward, and he hasn’t turned out to be any good so far. If you had been here three years ago lamenting Dante Taylor’s recruitment, you’re opinion would hold a lot more water. As it is, the team normally outrebounds opponents and frontlines rarely ripped us up. Among all the problems they encountered, it was turnovers and horrific perimeter defense that doomed us. Sooner or later you’re gonna get it. Maybe next thread, maybe next year! Hang in there. Eventually Bill Murray’s character got it right and got Andy McDowell’s to love him.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 03.19.12 @ 9:47 pm

Pitt vs Butler rematch!! I give the edge to Butler as it will be played in Indianapolis.

Wednesday….on HD Net

Comment by pittrocks 03.19.12 @ 9:47 pm

Wow…Pitt vs Butler, this Wednesday night, in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Living in Indy, should I go, or will I be utterly disappointed?

Comment by Lou 03.19.12 @ 9:52 pm

DRW, how many times are you going to repeat the same thing? We get it, Dixon didn’t recruit a center and forced Taylor to gain weight so he could play out of position and get hurt due to carrying the extra weight. Good lord, just let it go and move on.

BTW, spring practices have started, what are your thoughts on Myers at QB? Wait, I think we’ve heard that a few times already too…

Comment by Gopitt33 03.19.12 @ 9:59 pm

You have to go if you live in Indy! H2P

Comment by pitt87 03.19.12 @ 11:04 pm

Question for you all.
Would you have preferred to have been unjustly invited to the NCAA, played in front of your home crowd and lost in the 1st round by 22, never having once shown a pulse or an ounce of fight OR would you rather be still playing in a post season tourney that you have to buy into, that does not get any coverage from media and is scorned by your own fans as well as the general public?

My answer: when you have lemons, you make lemonade. Quitting is always the easiest thing to do, it takes no effort, no humility and no one looks.

I hated this season because I want so badly to win, care about the school, the students, the coaches, etc…

But I despise people who quit. Pitt has opened itself up to criticism by playing in this tourney and has a target on it’s back for the local media who think “big time” basketball begins and ends with WPIAL friggin finals at a place where winning college basketball has been played less than a handful of times over the last 30 years!

I have gained more respect for Dixon in losing and facing up to it than I ever had when winning.

I suspect there are many people who will take Dixon to task for X and O’s decisions and they may even be right. Dixon makes a ton of Money to do his job….he won’t make a dime more for the 2011-2012 season, but he has shown me he can take a punch and ain’t walking away.

Tough times don’t make character gentlemen, they reveal it. Dixon and Pitt will not win the NCAA, the NIT or perhaps this tourney….but they ain’t hiding either.

Comment by SFPitt 03.20.12 @ 2:11 am

That’s why I despise Birch, a quitter. That’s why this tourney is good for Pitt. But, I do wish the younger guys played some more. If Dixon isn’t going to play them, they shouldn’t be suited up next year. Beat Butler. I want revenge.

Comment by TX Panther 03.20.12 @ 5:46 am

If this NCAA tournament displayed anything it is that there are a lot of good coaches out there. Jamie maybe a good coach but he is not beyond reproach. Pitt deserves to be in a post season tournament, one they don’t have to pay to play in. Next basketball season should be very interesting for Pitt and Jamie.

I’m not a quitter but I can’t tolerate mediocrity either. When one has to pay to play, well I’d rather see our players spend more time with their books.

If we win the CBI do we get a banner to fly over the Pete?

Comment by MariettaMike 03.20.12 @ 6:26 am

No banner. But becuase this is a big time tournament that thousands have thronged to see (yes, multiple thousands at the Pete but barely), we get our pick of left over trophies from the Zebra Pen College Bowling Invitational, which already have “CBI” engraved on them. And the players each get a bobble head trophy.

Comment by velvil 03.20.12 @ 7:04 am

There were more people in the crowd for the Blue/Gold game this fall. Less than 2000 for sure.

I went, what a total waste of $40 (took my 13 year old, who asked me if this was like the Meineke Care Care Bowl) and two hours.

I was really hoping that either Princeton would give Pitt a good game, clash of styles, or Jamie would play the younger guys at least a little bit. No luck on either front.

Pitt was up by 24 at halftime and still ran out Robinson and Gibbs for most of the 2nd half. I just don’t get it. WHAT IS THE POINT?????????

Taylor was bad, yet no Gilbert. Dixon has totally botched the season for that kid. Burned his redshirt for no good reason, then doesn’t play him when the situation presents itself.

Jamie, wouldn’t it be good to know whether Gilbert and Zanna can play together? What about Taylor and Zanna? Why don’t we see if Moore can play some shooting guard? What about whether Moore and Patterson can play the two forward spots with Gilbert at center?

I just don’t see who benefits from running out the same old lineup that is built around two seniors who had a whole season to accomplish their goals and didn’t it get it done. Why do we need to keep rolling them out there for 30 minutes?

I DON’T GET IT.

Comment by boubacar aw 03.20.12 @ 8:37 am

I would have rather had them get an undeserved invitation to the NCAA’s and shown some fire and character and won a few of those games.

PK, it’s not about you!!! LOL

Comment by Dan 03.20.12 @ 8:42 am

Aw, boubacar aw, you have to realize, “it’s not about you”!!! LMAO

Yes, you and PK want to see some of the younger guys play, because it’s for your personal pleasure, I guess??? It’s going to help get you a raise at work, help your family, something like that. But, remember, it’s not about you!!!!

I know you didn’t want to see the younger guys get any playing time, to help themselves improve and help the Pitt basketball team do better next year. Have some real game time experience so you didn’t have to hear “they’re not game ready” yet next year.

You and PK are selfish bastards!!!! LMAO!!

It’s not about YOU!!!! ROLMAO!!!

Comment by Dan 03.20.12 @ 8:47 am

Can someone explain why Butler gets the home game?

I think Pitt has the better RPI and Kenpom ranking (as i mentioned) and even by the eye test Piutt is better (which, yeaa, is saying alot). How do they seed this thing?

Comment by PantherP 03.20.12 @ 8:49 am

I assume that Butler draws the bigger crowd … thus far, we drew 1449 and 2071.

Comment by wbb 03.20.12 @ 8:57 am

The team I did not name is the one going to the Big 12 next year.

We can’t do anything over so the regular season is done and it ain’t about getting a banner. There is really only 1 that means anything, IMO.

But what goes on between the ears is always more important and while I want to see the kids study too, I don’t think this tourney has taken one minute away from their studies…they would be playing anyway without the structure of a schedule.

I agree with TXPanther…Birch quitting in mid season is far different than simply transferring.

Comment by SFPitt 03.20.12 @ 9:23 am

Wbb- I bet you’re right. Our attendance #s just aren’t enough.

Comment by PantherP 03.20.12 @ 9:27 am

Well now we may get to have revenge over last years heartbreaker. Think Nas us gonna hear about the last seconds of the last time we played these guys?

Man I blocked this out. Forgot how painful that game was.

Comment by PantherP 03.20.12 @ 9:34 am

I can see both sides, I would like to see more minutes from the young guys. I have been saying it since mid season. I might be the only guy on here that thinks Epps could be a good point guard.

I also respect Jamie’s loyalty to upper classmen. He rewards the guys that have put in the time.

Gibbs and Nas had a tough year, but they deserve to be remembered for the positive things they meant to this team during their careers.

At this point it is only a game and it looks to me like they were having fun.

The big disappointment is the weakness of the fan base. Only 2000 in attendance. Can you say Fair Weather?

Comment by gc 03.20.12 @ 11:02 am

i agree about the fans, i have season tix and i went last night..i go to support the team. maybe the 20 dollar per tix is the problem for the CBI game??

Comment by mike 03.20.12 @ 12:39 pm

@SilverPantherinNYC….. I absolutely love Andie McDowell!! I think she’s one of the most beautiful women around, with that voice and the way she carries herself…..

Oh wait, this is a basketball blog.

Comment by Dan 03.20.12 @ 1:39 pm

And since I corrected you on the “Andie”, I will now correct myself on the “MacDowell”.!!!

Comment by Dan 03.20.12 @ 1:41 pm

boubacar, I share your angst.

Dan, I wish Chas would make repeated use of annoying teenage shorthand a bannable offense.

Looking forward to tomorrow night’s game, actually. I’m sure I’ll be screaming at Dixon to get Gilbert’s a@# in the game, but as long as the Panthers are still on TV, I’ll watch.

Comment by Carmen 03.20.12 @ 8:57 pm

Watch it Carmen, “it’s not about you”. ha ha

I guess i’ve worked that over enough. Just don’t get the “selfish” thing if you want the younger players in? Who is that, that keeps saying that, Steve, I believe.

I mean, what could it hurt?? I guess I’ve made my point ad nauseum. I’ll be yelling for him too, but, I’ll watch and cheer for whoever is on the court.

Comment by Dan 03.20.12 @ 11:39 pm

silverpanther as long as my opinion on recruiting a center, not on your obseession with deameanizing Taylor continues to annoy you beyond realism. In all your personal attacks on me you never address your opinion on the lack of a center recruited in 3 years. You will have to excuse me if I bring it up now and again so you can have something and someone to further hate.

It is obviously the your only reason to partic

Comment by drw 03.20.12 @ 11:59 pm

The game is going to be on HDNet. So it is Mark Cuban’s fault that we will be subjected to watching Gibbs and Robinson at least one more game.

Comment by boubacar aw 03.21.12 @ 6:10 am

Given that the returning players aren’t getting more playing time, what is the purpose of Pitt playing in this forgettable tournament?

Comment by MariettaMike 03.21.12 @ 6:33 am

link to youtube.com

To quote Allen Iverson, “We talkin’ about pracitce, how silly is that?”

Jamie Dixon is a practice coach. Practice is what he’s good at and what he loves to do. “Not a game, not a game, not a game, we talkin’ ’bout practice man”.

Jamie has built this program to where it is (top 20 program despite this year) on hard work and PRACTICE. No one, not even Dixon apologists like me, would argue that Jamie is a good game coach. He doesn’t make great adjustments on the fly. He needs things to be scripted, planned and PRACTICED.

Playing in this “forgettable tournament” gives Jamie a couple more weeks to practice with his team and try to get better.

So in order to have a few more practices, Pitt needs to win. Jamie must believe that playing Gibbs and Robinson give them the best chance to win .

Where Dixon completely losses me, is when he was up 24 points at halftime against Princeton, Taylor is playing his usual mediocre, stupid foul prone game and he still can’t find Gilbert 10 minutes? Come on man.

So, I’ll watch tonight, and hope Jamie has had Robinson practice not fouling after a missed free throw. And hoping that Dixon will get another couple practices in before the off season.

Comment by boubacar aw 03.21.12 @ 7:59 am

TJ McConnell swap for Isiah Epps. Good deal for everyone but Ron Everhart.

Comment by Boubacar aw 03.21.12 @ 9:20 am

Boubacar aw, I know you were just joking, but to any thought out there for anyone,

just said, he got released, and agreed not to go to Pitt or Robert Morris.
