Open Thread: St. John’s-Pitt

Game is on ESPN2. Probably be starting around 2:30 give or take.

I’m going to be tweeting during the game rather than a liveblog. Only because there I may have to record the last 5-10 minutes.

Looks like were going to get alot of Moe Harkless

Is Ashton Gibbs the least-court aware/lowest overall basketball smarts senior of the Howland-Dixon Era? I say yes.

I see where Michigan and WVA have signed to play hoops in the new Brooklyn arena – too bad Pitt’s Athletic Department isn’t doing anything like this!

Watching Woodall is painful

robinson can dunk?

Nice run to end the half by the Panthers. Nice to see Gibbs hitting some shots.

I was thinking the same thing, Omar. I was shocked.

Went off and came back on for me.

Does it seem to anyone else that the refs from WWE are calling this game?

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.06.12 @ 4:05 pm

They’re trapping everywhere,pass the ball.

Comment by alcofan 03.06.12 @ 4:09 pm

im only getting the box score on espn since I’m at work. So neither Taylor nor Zanna have any points? not surprising, but jeez. SJU does not havea strong front court and Taylor ate them up last time. good to see scoring evenly spread around the other guys though. Looks like Gibbs is all of a sudden is playing b-ball again, realizing he needs to boost his legacy maybe.

Things turned around for Pitt after the Jehovah’s Witnesses came knocking at my door mid way thru the first half. Is that a coincidence?

Comment by dinosaur 71 03.06.12 @ 4:15 pm

holy sh*t. Woodall has 6 TOs?!?!?!?!

Comment by PantherP 03.06.12 @ 4:17 pm

Senior leadership today

It was the best of Pitt and the worst of Pitt.
Lots of turnovers and missed foul shots…but step on both Srs Gibbs and Robinson who combine for 35 points. Pitt got to run a classic 4 corners at the end and they ran it ACC terrifically. First time in as long as I can remember a Pitt team running out the clock that way. They will need to bring their A game tomorrow against Georgetown…but the first win in a BE Tourney since 08. Hail to Pitt!!!

Comment by Dan 72 03.06.12 @ 4:46 pm

Looks like Ash and Nas finally figured out that their next loss is their last game.

On to G’Town. Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Pitt Dad 03.06.12 @ 4:49 pm

So two stupid things to say that really only belong on a Pitt hoops site.

1. While perusing the internet, I recently saw a picture of Omar from the Wire(Michael Kenneth Williams) and shortly thereafter a picture of Tre Woodall. I really think they could be related.

2. Was googling some old articles and found this quote. Of Dante Taylor, J.J. Richardson, Talib Zanna and Lamar Patterson “this will be the best four guys we ever brought in,” Dixon said.

PantherP:

Both 1 & 2 are awesome!

Comment by omar 03.06.12 @ 7:24 pm

I’ve seen Michael K. Williams on the street in Brooklyn and Tray about 12+ times in person. I don’t know about that one…Looking forward to the game tomorrow. We beat GT pretty handily way back a few months ago. There’s always a chance lighting can strike again.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 03.06.12 @ 7:44 pm

Looking casually at the BET bracket, Pitt seems to have one of the “easiest” roads to the semi-finals as anyone. G-town wont be a cakewalk, but maybe we have their number…maybe we’re warmed up after playing one game already. Who knows?

Comment by Lou 03.06.12 @ 7:49 pm

Used to be homecourt advantage was 10 points. Don’t recall how much Pitt beat Gtown by. Gotta take them one at a time. It’ll be interesting how well the walking wounded hold up if they do last past tomorrow. Jamie may need to do even more creative substitutions.

Comment by Joe 03.06.12 @ 8:28 pm

Woodall comin’, y’all…

Comment by JW 03.06.12 @ 8:37 pm

I am torn between wanting to put this season out of its misery, and intrigued as to whether this team can put it together, win the tournament, and then foul a defensive rebounder off of a foul shot with 1.5 seconds left and blow an early round NCAA tournament game.

So many tough choices when you are a Pitt fan.

Comment by PO'd Panther 03.06.12 @ 8:53 pm

Nice game and a nice win. let’s have 4 more just like it. Actually I would be happy to a have reprise of our last win against Georgetown.

Comment by Justinian 03.06.12 @ 9:20 pm

I am out of the prediction business but was actually working from 2:30 till 4 or so and went on the Iphone to check the score.

Nothing surprises me, but I was pleased.

Common Panthers…play like your lives depend on it!

Comment by sfpitt 03.06.12 @ 9:59 pm

LOL, PO’d Panther!

Comment by Lou 03.06.12 @ 10:04 pm

As Ivan Drago said in Rocky IV, “til’ the end”. That’s my hope for this team, that no matter the outcome they keep fighting until the end. I believe that if they do win tomorrow that they will beat Cinci. 5 in 5 I believe HTP!!!

Comment by Pitt Rob 03.07.12 @ 12:21 am

I love the Big East Tournament! One of the highest times I’ve ever jumped was 2003s beatdown of UConn. Along now with Nasir, Julius Page could sure dunk!

Comment by Gordo 03.07.12 @ 12:28 am

Keep it up Panthers…H2P

Comment by Gordo 03.07.12 @ 12:29 am

Omar was probably the best character on The Wire, and there were a lot. Hated the way he was killed, though. May have to have a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios in his honor.

Comment by Carmen 03.07.12 @ 8:12 am

One down….10 to go.

Comment by FG 03.07.12 @ 8:21 am

The problem for Pitt is that they were carried by Gibbs and Robinson against St, John’s, both of these players have had several games were there turnovers equal points scored in the game. Neither of them are game in and game out threat because of their weaknesses at this lebel, lack of height, ballhandling skills, and Robinson any for of offense 5 ft. away from the rim.

Anyone have any idea why there most legitimate player Moore played only 17 minutes. His shooting was off 2-7 but that pales to Gibbs percentage. It appears that although Moore who is the best overall player on the team is still on the short leash (destroying his new found confidence).

God forbid Jamie does not do this to the first legitimate guard guard coming to Pitt and Adams and clone of Charles Smith, 3 inches taller and a hell of alot meaner.
