Follow-Up Recruiting Stuff

Reed has the nice rundown, and as usual on this site for Signing Day Wednesday, there will be an open thread for when recruits are “confirmed” by recruiting sites as signed.

Just a couple other things.

Demetrius Cox will be making his announcement tonight on KDKA-TV around 6:40 tonight. Unlikely that he chooses Pitt at this point, but who knows.

Rutgers seems to be doing a good job of keeping their class together. It also looks like Mario Cristobal could be the next coach there. Would hate to see that simply because the storyline would be so beaten into the ground about how close he may have come to being the next Pitt head coach. To say nothing of the comparisons to Chryst for however long it goes. That would be tiresome.

Bam Bradley will make his decision at a 9am signing day ceremony at his high school. Arizona, Pitt or Stanford seem to be the choices.

I highly recommend this recruiting guide installment dealing with how you, as a fan, deal with signing day.

Still haven’t heard anything from Dave Durham, the Ohio State fullback looking to transfer. Seems to be a choice of Pitt — and sitting a year — or somewhere like Richmond in 1-AA to play immediately. Duke might also be a possibility since Durham is from North Carolina.

A couple local high school juniors got offers from Pitt. Who knows.

The pulling of Marzett Geter’s scholarship is a shame for the kid. It will be treated as a cautionary example. He said something stupid, and emotional on twitter — and was called out on it. It wasn’t profane. It wasn’t misogynistic. It wasn’t much more than a selfish moment. He’s still a 17-year old kid. The immediacy of technology and impulsiveness of youth are a toxic brew. As I’ve said before, there are plenty of mature, grown-ups that can’t get it right. I think everyone is entitled to at least one relatively benign twitter screw-up.

To be honest, it strikes me more as pretense for pulling the offer — and yes, I know the rumors about his academic issues. If he was a more highly touted recruit at a bigger position of need, this would have been a non-issue.

Chass i would like Cristobal to rutgers if it came soon enough we might pick up players becuse he runs a different system and in the years going foward it would be one less school runing pro
system we would be looking for different kinds of players that would help us a little.

Hey Chas, how about Geter’s toxic tweets about Tino Sunseri during the national championship game (i.e., Jordan Jefferson is LSU’s version of Tino, Tino needs to step up his game, and Pitt got the wrong Sunseri in reference to Vinnie?).

THEN he tweets that Pitt is wasting scholarships when Ryan Lewis verballed? And he has bad grades?

You can’t have that kid in the locker room. Cut ties, and move on.

This was not a one-time mistake.

Comment by pittjd06 01.30.12 @ 12:36 pm

The biggest area OL recruit next year will be North Alleghney’s Sean Kugler, who Pitt has already offered .. as well as many other big name schools.

Hid dad is the Steeler OL coach so I’m wondering if that will or won’t be to our advantage.

Robert Foster, Central Valley WR/DB, is the other area blue chip.

Comment by wbb 01.30.12 @ 12:42 pm

Anybody watching the twitter war between Dokish and that bimbo that wrote the ESPN article putting down Pitt? He’s calling her on her shit and she just doesn’t get it. It’s hilarious!!!

Comment by Mike 01.30.12 @ 12:43 pm

Wbb , do not forget about the top area blue chip of all for next year, regardless of classification. Tyler boyd of clairton ! Next western pa. All time great.

Comment by Rocky20 01.30.12 @ 1:19 pm

Mike:

I saw that. Some people just don’t understand history lasts longer than 10 years.

Comment by Hurriquake 01.30.12 @ 1:22 pm

I didn’t mean to impy that Kugler and Foster were the only 2 blue chippers next year … just that those 2 are getting a heck of a lot attention by the biggies.

“Demetrius Cox will be making his announcement tonight on KDKA-TV around 6:40 tonight. Unlikely that he chooses Pitt at this point, but who knows.”

Maybe I’m missing something, but why would he choose to make his announcement on Pittsburgh TV if he was going some place else?

Comment by Scottish Steel 01.30.12 @ 1:37 pm

I saw Foster in the Hopewell vs CV game that was on ESPN this past year. I originally tuned in to see Shell and that Foster kid was like lightening in a bottle.

Comment by BCPITT 01.30.12 @ 2:08 pm

KDKA asks them to come on and announce so that Pitt and/or PSU fans will watch. Unfortunately for them everybody already knows he’s going to Michigan State.

Comment by Mike 01.30.12 @ 2:15 pm

@ Scottish….because he is an 18 year old kid from Jeannette who wants to be on TV.

Comment by BCPITT 01.30.12 @ 2:17 pm

I followed some of the recruits on Twitter after Fruad Graham left for ASU, Geter being one of them. Let me say that IMO I am glad his scholarship was pulled. I understand that kids will be kids and that 17 year olds tend to be emotional, etc. etc. However, Geter constantly “tweeted (sp?)” bone-headed comment after boneheaded comment using all kinds of profanity, regardless of what he was talking about. I was skeptical at that time and then the following tweets about Sunseri and the offers to other defensive backs – no thank you. IMO it was much more than an isolated, emotionally charged tweet.

Comment by JAM 05 Pitt 01.30.12 @ 2:18 pm

What if any comments has Geter been tweeting since he got shown the door??

I wonder if Geter ends up in prep school before all is said and done?

Fine piece, Paul on the pipe dreams inherent with LOI Day. This is an annual travesty. It is meant to entice sports writers to speculate and bloggers to commiserate. After half a century of watch “big stars” become “has beens” and “under the radar prospects become “big surprises” like Isaac Pead of Cincinnati. you would think I wouldn’t waste my time with articles loke this—but, here I am==again. It is always fun to see a walk on become a starter and a 3 star player like Pitt’s Ravis, become an ALL-PRO. As always. we will see in several years who the real “finds” in this year’s class really are. So good fishing, guys, mat your dreams come true/ Rev. George from Columbus

Wbb that is to bad it would have helped us had he going there the class would have broke up some and we could have grabed one or two.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.30.12 @ 4:35 pm

I think it is funny to read the RU fan comments on the NJ.com site saying how Flood was their first choice anyway…I did notice one or two cries for Tom Bradley to be hired which instantly triggered flashbacks to our past two coaching hires.

Comment by BCPITT 01.30.12 @ 4:38 pm

I swear this is a real comment from the NJ.com article:

i have a feeling that the getting his salary approved by the governing bodies was the problem. Go get wannstadt, flood looks like we are settling for our third choice what. it looks bad.

Comment by BCPITT 01.30.12 @ 4:45 pm

if they take flood they are just filling a hole not geting a good coach. but it will keep the class together which is bad for us

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.30.12 @ 4:52 pm

If Flood gets the job and keeps the current staff I would guess they keep most of their recruits. Question is though is he the best hire? if not hiring him to keep his class is short sided on their part

Hester picks toledo over pitt that is bad when pitt offers and you pick toledo
some of the outhers you can say pitt was pruneing
the tree but now i wonder if that was true what the hell is going on.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.30.12 @ 9:27 pm

Surely no one would expect a Jeannette kid to go to Pitt. I think the last one was Dante Taylor and that was a disappointment. Pryor, Jordan Hall and a raft of players have forsaken their roots for out of state venues. Let Pitt fans not lament the loss. After all, Coach Dantonio left his roots of Zanesville to settle north. Let Pitt try to pick up one or two linemen, either offense or defense and I’ll be content. I see where Tony Gibson of RichRod’s staff continues to be relentless in his claiming of Pitt verbals. The latest being Parks. Oh, how I look forward to this whole recruiting charade to cease. Rev. George from Columbus/ P.S. Great win fot the Panthers hoopsters in hostile Morgantown.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 01.30.12 @ 9:34 pm

FRANKCAN
I totally agree. I have seen nothing from this new crew to suggest that they can recruit. I will wait and see but I have my doubts. As for getting Roberts Wisc. only has 12 recruits and they wanted him as a preferred walk-on.

Comment by JP 01.30.12 @ 9:35 pm

JP i am with you i think i to will wait but i do worry i mean who picks toledo over pitt you must have done a poor sales job.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.30.12 @ 9:48 pm

I also look at the sleaze at ASU who is putting together a nice class with a few 4 stars and a buch of 3 stars (21 recruits and a number of others that are close). So I don’t want to here that only a month is not enough time to develop relationships and get some top talent.

Comment by JP 01.30.12 @ 9:59 pm

IMHO, any kid who switches to a MAC team from Pitt has been told by the Pitt coaches he is not likely to play much. Either that, or the kid is not expected to qualify and is really headed to Prep School. Just my opinion, though. I may be wrong and these coaches may be terrible recruiters.

We will know by this time (or soooner) next year, in any event.

Comment by pitt 1972 01.30.12 @ 10:28 pm

JP – most of ASU’s recruiters were from Denis Erikson. Once Chryst and hsi staff show they can coach, the recruits will come.

Comment by markp 01.30.12 @ 10:42 pm

I am boycotting KDKA.
Could and would this kid be allowed to announce his choice of another school outside of his hometown anywhere else but Pittsburgh, I am tired of the negative publicity in this city of the local university which they seem to enjoy putting down.
Would this occur in Happy Valley? How about Birmingham, Ala. or maybe Columbus?
Never! KDKA you suck.

Comment by frankarms 01.30.12 @ 10:57 pm

I don’t fault this staff so much for the way the recruiting class has shaken out.

We fans tend to look at the PITT football program with rose colored glasses and forget that just 14 months ago we were being ridiculed on the national stage for more than one issue…

A string of violent arrests, the SI article, The DW firing and Haywood debacle and finally our brand spanking new coach who we built a massive national advertising campaign around abruptly up and leaves.

Any one of those issues would be bad for a program. What it did for PITT is make it into a national laughingstock and something for recruits and their parents to be wary of.

In addition we have a Head Coach and an Offensive Coordinator who are rookies at their jobs. It will take a solid year of no negative news with good effort and production on the field to overcome that.

Put it this way. If Shell wasn’t a soon-to-be father of twins he’d be at Alabama and if PITT didn’t have a great pre-med and medical school Voytik most probably would be playing elsewhere also.

That’s what this recent string of negative factors does to even a decent football program and we have a lot of work ahead to overcome that.

Frank – in another thread you asked who picks Toledo over PITT. Answer: a recruit who isn’t going to academically qualify at PITT does. The MAC academic standards are a good bit lowwer than the BE’s. When we move to the ACC the standards at PITT will be higher then also.

Anyone else notice that there is a new mutually beneficial girl? — Maybe the comments on the Blather were heard and Chryst made the hire?

Comment by BCPITT 01.31.12 @ 8:17 am

Look fellas, it’s not that bad. The breakdown:

QB – 1 – A stud
RB – 1 – Also a stud
WR – 3 – The Davis Twins, who are both good and the 6’3″ Trent Coles who apparently runs a 4.4
TE – 1 – stud
OT – 1 – Bisnowaty – stud, plus another probable sleeper (Guy from NH), so lets say 2
OG – 1 – sleeper…but at least adds depth
DT – 1 – Well he’s big
DE – 1 – 3 star, decent size
OLB – 2 – smaller, faster guys with potential
MLB – 1 – Caprara – probaby too small, so really 0
S – 1 – Scout shows 2, but Jevonte Pitts probably won’t qualify
CB – 1 – Sleeper from WA. (I thought Pitt had too many cornerbacks…)

Okay, so the next thing I’d do if I had time would be to look at the all the freshman coming off of redshirt and match up the holes in the lineup. But I have to work.

Bottom line is – what everybody has been saying. We need a couple more big bodies and an MLB (Sorry but Rippy is an OLB who apparently only excels at edge rushing so he doesn’t count) A couple more cornerbacks wouldn’t hurt either. But until you look at the redshirts, it’s kind of pointless. Maybe I’ll get to it this afternoon.

Good work Atlanta!!

Comment by Dan 01.31.12 @ 1:56 pm

I don’t think this recruiting year is terrible and we may have some nice surprises. But, this is a down year for many reasons – put out a decent showing for Paul Chryst’s rookie year and we’ll see players banging our doors down to play at PITT.
