This Just In…

Reed is having ribeye steak, asparagus and homemade bread for dinner…

Oh, and four star TE/DE J.P. Holtz committed to play his college football at PITT this evening.

This is a big get for Chryst & Co. in that Holtz is a highly ranked local prospect who was targeted by Wannstedt, Graham and Chryst as a player they very much wanted on the Panthers.  He most probably will line up at the TE position for us and seeing the way Chryst used TEs, sometimes in a two TE set, he may be able to contribute sooner rather than later.

Currently PITT has only two ‘true’ TEs on the roster in Hubie Graham and Brendan Carozzoni with converted WR Drew Carswell and converted QB Anthony Gonzalez working into the rotation at that position.  I wonder if Carswell might move back to WR as he has the size at 6’4″ and 215  that this staff likes and has used there while at Whisky.

I don’t envision Holtz playing much as a true freshman but one never knows.  Hubie Graham will probably get the bulk of playing time at that position and let’s hope he gets more passes his way.

Here is an interesting fact: in 2010 our TEs caught 21 passes; under Graham in 2011 they had 45 receptions.  I hope we incorporate the TEs into the offense at least as much as last season.

Personally I really like Brendan Carozzoni and want to see him get more action on the field.  He only caught four passes last season but showed flashes of what he can do in the UCONN game when he had three catches for 36 yards.

The big question, at least in my mind, is which of these TEs are going to excel in the run blocking aspect of the position? I think Bostad will incorporate that into the offense more than we saw last season.  We really were spoiled with Nate Byham in that role.

There is also the chance that the staff may want Holtz on the defensive side of the ball as he excelled there also.  He’s a multi-talented kid who has great athletic ability.  Plus he looks like he’s forty years old already so he’ll definitely be able to get into bars without being carded.

Holtz was a Jack of all trades in his career at Shaler as he contributed in many ways:

As a senior, Holtz ran for 337 yards on 72 carries. He caught 19 passes for 332 yards and scored 15 touchdowns.  J.P. Holtz says he played mostly running back during his junior season and had 14 total touchdowns (rushing and receiving). He says he can bench 305-pounds.

Holtz plans to major in education and reports a 3.0 core GPA. He is taking the SAT in June.

So, congrats to J.P. Holtz for picking the University of Pittsburgh for his college choice and let’s wish him the best of luck while here.

Holtz had originally committed to play at Penn State then reviewed his options after the Sandusky scandal broke and they had their coaching change.

Pitt is it!!!

Comment by Justinian 01.25.12 @ 6:57 pm

Now, does this create momentum for others to follow?

Comment by Reed 01.25.12 @ 7:02 pm

This is wonderful news for Pitt. It is also a wise choice for J.P. He will be incorporated into the new offensive scheme, pronto. Things are looking UP in “da Burgh”. Now if we can just get it together on the court tonight. In JUBILATION! Rev. George from Columbus

Excellet Addition!

This class is really shaping up, way to stick together fellas.

Comment by Yup 01.25.12 @ 7:23 pm

To be honest I drafted up this post before he committed.

pk – you are correct and of all those four kids Jackson is the more probably one to commit soon.

The OG you are thinking of is Gabe Roberts from Wisconsin. He’s flown under the radar as a non-ranked player but Bostad was working him heavily when he was the OL coach there. He got Roberts to visit PITT on Jan 20th but Wisconsin is still the school Roberts grew up wanting to play for.

We’ll see how attractive a draw Bostad is if he can switch this player.

Comment by Reed 01.25.12 @ 7:23 pm

Travon Woodall dropping 3’s right now..

Comment by Yup 01.25.12 @ 7:30 pm

Reed, thanks. Yea i couldnt think of his name. Im expecting at least two more commitments by the end of signing day. Chryst might want to save some schollies for next year

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.25.12 @ 7:58 pm

Awesome! And we now have clear evidence that Coach Chryst knows what he is doing and is a recruiter to be reckoned with…. Let’s all relax and let him do his job! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by SFPitt 01.25.12 @ 8:17 pm

Colorado, wvu, arizona, and pitt are his top 4

Comment by Pk 01.25.12 @ 8:17 pm

No Frank, you weren’t wrong to worry. It seemed a bit late for the coaching staff coming together and with coach Chryst coaching the Rose Bowl (which I applaud his decision), there was some reason to be concerned.

This may seem strange, but I wasn’t concerned one bit, because I had almost written the whole recruiting process over after the Fraud fiasco.

I figured anything we could get, was gravy, and I wasn’t going to even think about Chryst’s recruiting ability until next year.

Then, word came out we kept 15 or 16 committs, they were keeping their word, especially Shell and Voytik, then we lost a few, but, now gaining a few, it seems we now may end up with a teriffic recruiting class.

If he can get these guys signed on the dotted line, I will be very pleasantly upbeat for the spring!!!!

There were some concerns, you were not wrong, but it looks like it might just turn out allright!!!

***And we’re closing out a BE win, finally***

Chryst is low key…no flashy dancing and fast talking just a straight forward adult approach.
In the long run this will lead to quality recruits who really want to play in the ‘Burgh.

Jamie…..go home and pour a couple of cold brewskies!

Overall this class is looking quite nice. With a few more additions to come, it should be quite impressive in any year let alone under the circumstances we’ve gone through. Hail to Pitt!

Good pickup by Coach. Not worried about the defections as most were suited for an offense and defense we will no longer be playing. Still have to really like the leadership of the core group that is sticking together given all that has happened. We need to give Coach some leeway to get people that he feels will fit his system. There is nothing at all wrong with being honest with recruits if he does not feel they are a good fit.

Comment by Mailman 01.26.12 @ 12:39 am

Isn’t the Devlin kid on the roster a TE?

Comment by The Incline 01.26.12 @ 1:00 am

Houston Panther, you are so right. College coaches and any customer pulling up to a drive thru window are at the mercy of 17 year old kids. How would anyone like to manage a fast food restaurant staffed only by 16/17 year olds? Oh the humanity….

Comment by SFPitt 01.26.12 @ 2:01 am

Incline – Devlin’s football career ended because of recurring knee injuries. He met the NCAA requirements for a medical hardship waiver so he’ll be able to stay and get his post-graduate degree from PITT while not counting against the scholarship limit.

I don’t think any of these kids who decommit are doing it specifically because of Chryst himself as the new coach. There is a real change in coaching culture from Graham and his staff to Chryst and his. Some players don’t feel comfortable with this new staff as they weren’t pursued by them in the first place.

When you have a recruiter calling you all the time and telling you how great you are and how soon you’ll play… and then new guys come in and say “Well, of course we’ll honor our scholarship offer to you.” that is a big drop in comfort level for the recruits.

My impression of Chryst and this staff is that they know exactly what type of kids they want on the roster and don’t give much of a damn about recruiting stars. Lewis is a good example.

If you research Ryan Lewis‘ career on the internet you’ll see that his complete JR year was lost to injury so he had no game film to show off, which is crucial for schools to recognize player’s talents and to start recruiting them. Once he had some film to show halfway through his senior season schools started sitting up and taking notice. Utah and Colorado aren’t chopped liver either.

Same with Caprara. You just know that Chryst was getting calls from local HS coaches and was told what a real player Caprara is – I’ve read quotes from opposing coaches who have said he’s the best defender they ever played against. That’s saying something in the WPIAL. So Chryst makes him an offer to play at PITT. No stars or national accolades but someone the staff wants on board.

If you go back and look at Wisconsin’s past recruiting you’ll see that on offense they recruited only one four star player over the last four years, a WR. All others were three star and below kids. That speaks volumes about how that offense, led by Chryst and which produced so many points per game, was targeted and recruited.

He just doesn’t care about star rankings. He cares about how the recruit will play for him out on the field.

Feeling good about things. This class is just tremendous after what has gone down. PC and the other assistants deserve tremendous kudos.

Great article / interview with Voytik and his father by Scout. Both father and son had some awesome things to say about PC and Rudolph’s style. Very very encouraging and a strong endorsement of their recruiting prowess. Voytik is also working hard on the recruiting front. The more I read the more I think this kid is mature beyond his years and will be playing next year. He’s going to take this program to where we all want it to be…and soon. HTP!

Comment by FG 01.26.12 @ 9:25 am

ESPN is reporting that Greg Schiano is being considered for the Tampa Bay job. While I don’t understand that, Tampa Bay is not known for great coaching decisions. If it happens before LOI day it may give us a chance to flip one or two of their top recruits.

Comment by Houston Panther 01.26.12 @ 10:45 am

Don’t forget that they’re were 3 transfers last year that weren’t eligible to play last season: Cullen Christian, Brendon Felder, and Ray Vinopal. Just need to get some beef for that Offensive Line!!!

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.26.12 @ 10:58 am

Comment by jw in Raleigh 01.26.12 @ 11:00 am

If Schiano leaves Noo Joisy for palm trees we might be able to pick up a recruit or two (depending on how many scholies we have left).

I hate to say this, it is very possible that Penn State and believe it or not Maryland could be the
lucky benefactors in the fallout avalanche.
RU is an I95 corridor school and the recruits come from a radius that is well within PSU and
Terps territory.

Denman is the prize!!

Comment by isnore 01.26.12 @ 11:06 am

this may be the test of what Bostad told Denman … if Denman chooses Pitt, then he was told that Bostad is staying.

Of course, this is all contingent upon Schiano levaing and in tuen Denman deciding to re-commit (for the 4th time)

Comment by wbb 01.26.12 @ 11:10 am

Good Point Pitt Is It! Both Cullen Christian and Brendon Feldon (hopefully healthy) are top notch talents with mad athelicism/speed. Don’t know much about Ray Vinopal but I do think he got some PT at Michigan which is saying something. Don’t forget Tom Ricketts an OT who transferred from Penn St. 4 star rivals recruit from Wexler in 2010. He should bring some beef!

Hey PAUL SHANNON, take a hike.

What do you come on here, once a month or so??? A lot you’ve offered to the blog.

Frank has never self-promoted himself, he is a passionate Pitt fan, who does a lot of the leg work, and comes up with a lot of good info and leads on Pitt recruiting.

Don’t put words in his mouth, he never has patted himself on the back, he does a great job, and 99% of us love him.

Perhaps if you got involved in the dialogue more than once in a blue moon, you’d realize that.

It’s people like you, who like to rain on others parades that suck.

He bashes people at will??? Please show some specific references where he, or any of us have done that. There are some heated discussions at times, but personal bashing???

A lot of us that come on here quite often, have also got to know each other a bit (as good as you can on a blog), and we yell at each other sometimes, no big deal.

Chas’ has the archives at the bottom of the page, right corner, please give the blog and date of bashing at will.

Tampa / Rutgers: Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting that Greg Schiano has a shot at the Bucs’ head job. Update> Adam Schefter just tweeted that Tampa plans to hire Schiano…and they are working out the details of the contract now.

Time for Pitt to “quick-pick” a few Rutger recruits…….??

@Gordo – Yeah I forgot about Ricketts. BTW, did Dorian Bell actually transfer to Duquesne from OSU last year? I guess he had some “issues”

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.26.12 @ 12:01 pm

I wonder how many of these recruits realize that they don’t have to sign on Letter of Intent Day? Schiano leaving probably puts some pressure on a few of those Rutgers commits trying to figure out what they’re going to do, especially if they were on the fence. Feb.1st is less than a week away. Remember Ejuan Price last year? From all reports, he was a nervous wreck on LOI Day trying to choose between OSU and Pitt.

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.26.12 @ 12:10 pm

I’d love to see them grab one of Rutger’s WR commits… Schiano has been pretty good at getting quick, shifty guys for WR, something Pitt was sorely lacking last year.

Gordo – just curious but do you ever go watch any of Duquesne football games. I bet they would be fun as hell to watch.

When I was growing up I went to all the PITT home games and also any CMU (Carnegie Tech then) games I could – and honestly I thought the CMU games were just as much fun.

BCPITT, Denham is quite aware of how Bostad prizes him, since he recruited him for both Wisc and Pitt. His worry may be if Bostad is staying .. we don’t know what Bostad told him (if anything) about the Bears OL job .. because I guarantee you recruiters from other schools mad Denham aware of the potential that Bostad may leave.

Comment by BCPITT 01.26.12 @ 12:48 pm

Ok, tino’s mom is uncalled for.

As for the Tino bashing, what?? He stinks!!

I know, I know, the offensive line and receivers.

We all get that ad nauseum. He simply stinks, when given time, overthrowing 5 feet over heads, into the dirt 5 feet in front of them constantly. Absolutely no pocket prescence or awareness what so ever.

It’s not just “everyone blames the quarterback”, we all get there are 22 players on the team.

Yoi, we can’t still be talking about Tino can we??

Please let someone grab the reigns in the spring so we don’t have to go over this one more time!!

No, it won’t be maybe he’ll be okay in the new system, he stunk in Wannstedts system too.

He was as bad in his last game against WVU as he was in his first game against UTAH two years and 20 some games ago. He never progessed at all.

To the point, no, you shouldn’t have been called Tino’s mom.

However, complaining to Chas and Reed about Tino bashing would possibly make me wonder if you are a relative or friend of his?? Sincerely???

If you would happen to be, the best advice is probably not to read the boards, they can be tough on the families as well as the player.

Hence, why a lot of players and coaches don’t read press clippings. Some do, I give you that, but I’m sure a lot of them don’t so they don’t have to go through an emotional rollercoaster.

I also can never remember seeing anyone question Tino as a man (yes, he’s 23 or almost 23), a brother, a son, a student, an uncle, a human.

Just as a quarterback at a Div 1 college.

That’s what this is, a sports blog, one that happens to be about Pitt, pretty much football and basketball. Everyone talks about the good, and the bad.

Dan’s two responses were well stated. FRANKCAN is a dedicated mainstay on here and deserves better. PS, just show alittle respect and you should get it in return. No need for name calling, including “Tino’s Mom”.

wbb—no need to refer to Pitt bloggers as simpletons because they disagree with you on Tino. And if you want to find out if Dan and I and Emel and the rest are relatives or the same person, come see me. I am at 189 Main St. Adamsburg PA. As a Pitt fan, you will be welcome. We can speak face to face and remove all doubts about your above post.

Enough of the insults.Let’s maintain some class on the Blather. HTP

wow, what a surprise Boosdaws .. Dan’s response were well stated and FRANKCAM deserves better, and I get called out for the simpleton analysis.

I would like to point out to you that Dan told paul to take a hike followed and FRANKCAM called him a troll … seems like you (selectively) missed that … but I’m sure you will send your love to each and stroke each other’s egos

Comment by wbb 01.26.12 @ 1:51 pm

I guess ESPN is reporting that it’s official — Schiano is going to Tampa Bay. Wonder if Penni has relatives on the East Coast .. the kids would love NYC?

Comment by wbb 01.26.12 @ 2:03 pm

I will lower myself to answer @wbb, I’m bored at this time.

You selectively failed to mention that Paul Shannon started the whole thing asking if Frank sucks???

Hence, the troll and take a hike comment.

Is that clear enough for you?? LOL

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 2:14 pm

Hey, I wonder if we have a substitue today for Geometry in 7th period!!!

Oh, and Lisa Smith told me that she likes Billy, but she doesn’t think Billy likes her!!!

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 2:16 pm

@PaulShannon, if you have lots of money and want to share, you’re my best pal!!

If you’re a cop, I don’t speed and I don’t drive drunk, and I doubt you could help me if I murder someone!!!!

But, I’d be happy to know you anyhow!!

By the way, how’s Nosmo King???

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 2:19 pm

P.S. my jocular post above referencing middle school and high school is poking fun at all of us, especially me!!!!!!!!!!

On a semi-serious note, I realize some people on here may not be computer savvy as some, and I’m not really either, but…..

everyone knows LOL-means Laughing Out Loud

LMAO-Laughing My Ass Off, right??

I would suppose most do, but for some, thought I’d let you know.

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 2:31 pm

Dan ,now thats funny ,trying to stay away from the brownies and chasing the girl scouts.I just read more than post, just do not like the personal crap about the players just the facts is that a troll.

Comment by paul shannon 01.26.12 @ 2:43 pm

No Paul, everything is cool. I see you post on here, and am aware of you. I should be more aware, and will be, that a lot of people mostly read and don’t post that often, and some never post.

I just jumped to quickly, but I wanted to defend Frankcan.

I had just spilled coffee on myself at the time, so I was a little trigger happy I suppose.

My apologies.

Paul Shannon what i say to Wbb Was said in fun
and if he or you had read all the posts you

Wbb and i walk down the same street just on different sides of the street had you said i was nuts that would be ok or had you said you thought
i picked on Wbb to mutch or had you said i was crazy i might say right on

but you were not involved so out of the blue i suck i never said a mean word to you dont think i saw you on here before so i thought you were a troll .

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.26.12 @ 3:23 pm

Hey Paul, also, this will get WBB a bit!!

If you happen to be Nordenberg or Pederson in disguise as Paul Shannon, could you please put the frickin’ Pitt script on the helmet and the mustard and royal blue uni’s back please!!!!!

It’s not that long ago, and precedent has been set, Washington, BYU, Buffalo Sabres and NY Islander fans all demanded there teams go back to their real colors after failed marketing schemes, and they did. I’m sure there are others.

Whew, that’s a load off, I feel better!! ha ha

If you’re not them, well, again my apology for kinda jumpin’ quick this morning, and I look forward to reading your posts, and please, always comment or criticize mine.

Good day, tell Kinish (sp?) I said hello!! LOL

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 3:25 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.26.12 @ 3:34 pm

Rutger fans are commenting “How about Mario Christabol? Coached here under Schiano from 2001-2003, took FIU from 1-11 to Sun Belt Champs in four years. “

Comment by mtoolmn 01.26.12 @ 3:45 pm

Gotcha Frank. I think Paul Shannon may actually be Chilly Billy Cardille!!

Comment by Dan 01.26.12 @ 3:56 pm

never saw Duquesne football but my grandpa went there about 75 years ago…$40 season tix cant be beat. too bad I’m on the left coast

Comment by Gordo 01.26.12 @ 4:17 pm

dan i think there is a new post for the 26th

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.26.12 @ 4:18 pm

When I saw FRANKCAN’s post above that starts with Paul Shannon, at first I thought maybe it was a poem, because it looks like it’s written in stanzas.

But then I thought I’d never seen a poem with that line structure before and certainly none of it rhymed.

And now that I’m sure it wasn’t intended as a poem, I’m still not sure it shouldn’t be read as one. I know I will re-read it again and again.

Comment by hugh green 01.26.12 @ 4:41 pm

lolol hugh green

love the last line

“before so i thought you were a troll .”

Comment by Gordo 01.26.12 @ 4:45 pm

Free verse? Since we are talking about middle school, how about a haiku for Pitt football…

Coach Chryst now at Pitt,
Recruiting, recruiting hard,
A quarterback, please?

Comment by Stfan 01.26.12 @ 9:28 pm

LOL, Holtz blew off Mark Madden this afternoon for an interview. I guess Madden blamed Shaler HS for not letting Holtz know. It’s pretty funny because MM is a Shaler alum.
