Meet Us At Hemingway’s

Picked up the Volvo S60 for the weekend at my local Volvo dealership. Got a crash course (figuratively I mean) about the car and all the features. It’s going to be a lot of fun to drive — even into a winter storm.

Well, I popped the trunk on the Volvo S60 I get for the weekend thanks to the Biggest Fan in the Big East contest. (Please, vote.) And in there was a box filled with t-shirts, mini-basketballs, beer cozies and hats. Emblazoned with Big East and Volvo logos. Needless to say, I have little corporate goodies to give away tomorrow.

As for the where, I’ll be at Hemingway’s around 6 pm tomorrow. Also definitely going to be there will be at least one of the Bryan’s from PittScript blog. Unfortunately Cardiac Hill almost certainly cannot make it. Please come on over and have a drink (or more) with us.

Get that sucker a blue and gold paint job before you return it to those fine folks at Volvo.

Chas – save some for the National LOI Day festivities @ PITT. I think I’ll drive up this year for that.

Comment by Reed 01.20.12 @ 3:59 pm

Chas – At some point before I expire from this earth (and hopefully that will be while)I would like to help sponser a party with all of the members of this blog. I would be willing to put together a significant amount of money toward this event…maybe after a Pitt game in the Fall
or after the Spring Game this year. I would love to meet my fellow characters on this blog and hopefully be able to put a face with a name. Just a thought. Also, would like to meet you and Reed.
Could probably get Zeise and Jerry Mico to attend.
You have my email….Let me know if you and Reed ever get close. Thanks to all my fellow bloggers.

Don’t expect miracles vs Louisville. I too, will be rooting as hard as possible but this is a very bad match up for Pitt, even with Woodall returning

Comment by Dan 72 01.20.12 @ 4:06 pm

Chas, I’d love to join you, but I’m leaving at 7:00 tomorrow morning for a convention in Las Vegas. Please tip one for me. I’ll be thinking about all of you while I’m walking the stip in the warm sunny weather.

PS Being a Pitt fan only goes so far……leave the car as it is. The Volvo looks great in red.
You can always get an “I Love the Panthers” bumper sticker.

Comment by Justinian 01.20.12 @ 4:13 pm

I continue to vote for Chas over Stephanie against my better judegment, and sadly as usual, he needs our help.

Chas, Volvo is well known for its safety .. does this one have a breathalizer feature for start-up?

Comment by wbb 01.20.12 @ 4:26 pm

Yeah, I hear ya wbb. I have both Stephanie and Marianne mad at me, but I continue to vote for the Chas Man.

If Woodall comes back strong and we handle the press, and Gibbs is hot, we have a shot tomorrow night. Louisville in a tailspin.

Comment by bossdaws 01.20.12 @ 6:17 pm

Back in the burgh for the game. Just arrived to a forecast I so remember for a mid January night. 3-5 inches of snow and gray skies.

Pitt plays like they did against cuse and Marquette minus the 13-0 runs plus we make a few lay ups and we win.

Excuse me while I drink beer and watch the pens with my brother in law.

Comment by Velvil 01.20.12 @ 6:42 pm

Remember when Volvos looked like a box with wheels? Congrats Chas! Bring home a winner.

Comment by gc 01.20.12 @ 7:40 pm

Main Dan (Dan 72). Yes, I know my place. Dan72 was here before me, he changed his to Dan72 to differentiate us!!!

Hey, I think that would be absolutely fantastic. You know, other than not knowing each other in person, you do get to know people on here pretty well. If you are on here for awhile, you definitely know personalties.

Would be fantastic to meet everyone. I’d be willing to kick in. Something we need to keep on the back burner and talk about. After a Pitt game would be ideal.

Fantastic idea. Let’s make it happen.

Comment by Dan 01.20.12 @ 8:07 pm

I would definitely drive back there from Indiana and contribute to such a get-together. Best wishes, Chas-good luck with the contest!

Comment by Lou 01.20.12 @ 8:14 pm

I don’t feel like the voting buttons were quite lined up right. I think I voted for you, Chas, but I may have voted for Pat Buchanan by mistake.

Comment by Brian in BK 01.20.12 @ 8:28 pm

I think I may have mistakenly voted for the mutually beneficial girl.

Comment by Justinian 01.20.12 @ 8:58 pm

Is the voting playing by Chicago rules? I’ve played by those rules before. If so, I’ll make sure to get the local cemetary to participate.

I like the idea Dan. Where there’s a will, there is a way.

Comment by TX Panther 01.20.12 @ 9:13 pm

@gc, ya they were boxes with wheels. Past 10 years or so, some of the best lookin’ cars on the road, IMHO.

Seems like I’ve said “what is that” and many times the reply “it’s a volvo”.

Good luck Chas. Have fun cruisin’ her around.

@justinian, a vote well placed!

Comment by Dan 01.20.12 @ 9:15 pm

I’m amazed that I can see the mutually beneficial girl’s toes… Enjoy a pop at Hemingways for me. I’ll be there in spirit, if not body…I’m taking my 11 year old daughter to the game and she and I will be taking in a little more low key pre game atmosphere.

I have a feeling we will get a great effort from the boys Saturday night and will make things interesting at the end.

Comment by ECH 01.20.12 @ 9:17 pm

A great idea, Dan. I’d like to meet the guys and girls? too) Perhaps after a game we are certain to win, such as West Virginia!! This blogging thing is bonding. Hail to Pitt!! Rev. George in Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 01.20.12 @ 9:26 pm

I too am here for the game tomorrow night. Any second now the freezing rain will be starting. Looking forward to seeing our first BE win of the season in person. Anyone know what time Gameday is broadcasting at the Pete tomorrow morning?

Comment by OrlandoAlum 01.20.12 @ 9:36 pm

The doors for College Gameday open at the Pete at 8:30 and the broadcast is at 10:00 AM till noon. Be there or be square.

Comment by Justinian 01.20.12 @ 10:17 pm

Hopefully it will be done snowing by then. Really coming down here now.

Comment by OrlandoAlum 01.20.12 @ 10:48 pm

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.20.12 @ 11:18 pm

that should read the last post on the post from the 19th

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.20.12 @ 11:38 pm

I’m going to continue to be optimistic(and probably a little nuts), but I believe the Panthers come out firing tomorrow and win going away by 15. This game starts the run to a stunning closing stretch in which the Panthers get back into this thing. Again, I know I’m out of my mind, but I can hope.

Comment by Pitt Rob 01.20.12 @ 11:40 pm

I’ll be at Hems to grab a quick drink with you guys, but I’ll have to back out early to get my priority seating in the zoo for attending GameDay.

I’ll be the tall skinny dude in glasses and a zoo shirt.

Who in hell is this Mike Gambardella guy and how does he pull in 46% of the vote? Sounds like he’s Brooklyn connected to me.

Comment by Reed 01.21.12 @ 7:36 am

Mike Gambardella is John Marinato’s cousin.

Comment by ECH 01.21.12 @ 7:41 am

Dan – that is a great idea. Two years ago I hosted a retirement bash (for myself) at the old Cantina bar next to Bettis’ – now the Tilted Kilt, which is a major upgrade BTW.

I invited everyone from here and the message boards at Scout.com and we had a blast meeting each other and putting faces to screen names. It also gives us a chance to talk about things we may not put out in public.

So, here is some advice. If we do this after a PITT game it is going to be packed to the gills with PITT fans. Which makes getting tables and having a decent conversation among a group hard to achieve.

I’d suggest doing it at the Spring Game – which this year might actually be interesting given that we’ll see some different players at QB (I hope).

Not everyone likes to make the drive for that Spring scrimmage though, but it’s low key and a lot of fun. We need to get a little tight before the game, that’s the only way to watch the Spring Game given the circus-like atmosphere down on the field and our natural inclination of doom and gloom from being PITT fans.

Either way, Spring Game or regular season game, count me in. But Dan, don’t pay for it yourself, especially if you have kids you want to put through college. I’m still paying off the massive debt I racked up there… PITT fans are no longer beer drinkers, they tend to go to the hard stuff early and often, which makes sense given the material we fans have to work with.

Comment by Reed 01.21.12 @ 7:49 am

The Spring Game has merit. Pitt needs to have some fo;ks attend. When is it and where? Rev. George in Columbus where 50,000 for the April exhibition is not unusual and one can get a free tatoo if one wishes.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 01.21.12 @ 8:06 am

Great read in ESPN about great QBs from Western PA:

“If there is any solace in history, it is this: To see Pennsylvania’s best quarterbacks, you only have to travel 50 miles west of the state line to Canton, Ohio. Of the 23 modern-era quarterbacks elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, these six — Blanda, Unitas, Namath, Montana, Kelly and Marino — came from Western Pee-Ay.”

I will go to the game if a few of us get together prior to the game for a few drinks.

Comment by Jim from Dallas 01.21.12 @ 8:22 am

Frankcam, the (non-pay) FB message board on Pantherlair has been listing Holcomb as the new DL coach for about a week now.

Of course, these boards have not been entirely accurate but Holcomb does indeed seem like an accurate candidate. (Like Haering, he played at WVU in late 80s/early 90s)

Comment by wbb 01.21.12 @ 9:36 am

I should have written that “Holcomb does indeed seem like a ‘viable’ candidate

Comment by wbb 01.21.12 @ 9:37 am

Frank you always have our love, you’re always on top of things, and a very important member of this board brother!!

Comment by Dan 01.21.12 @ 10:09 am

Anyone watching “Gameday”? It seems ironic that they are arguing about ‘rushing the court’ when they are in a building that never rushed the court … even after Ramon hit a 3 pointer to beat VU, or Gibbs did the same to beat Providence.

Comment by wbb 01.21.12 @ 10:35 am

Excellent point wbb, teams that expect to win, never rush the court, it belittles and embarrasses you.

I remember a few years back, Syracuse fans rushing the court after a victory, and it was horrible. I even said to myself, “what are they doing, they’re Syracuse”.

And I remember 95% of the Syracuse fans on their boards the next few days were on fire, like we would be, saying the same thing about those that did rush the court.

If you’re a winner, you never rush the court.

Comment by Dan 01.21.12 @ 12:31 pm

I didn’t see the show, but, if they were being somewhat serious, someone needs to tell the Zoo members, if we happen to win, “don’t you dare”!!!

Comment by Dan 01.21.12 @ 12:33 pm

Dan, in 03, Syracuse rushed the court vs Pitt 3 differnt times within a space of 5 minutes.

They hit a shot with about 4 seconds left and Pitt called a TO before another Pitt player took it out and threw up a long shot … 1st rush of the court.

Pitt was granted a TO and the court was cleared so Pitt took the ball out again with the students lined up ready to pounce. The ball went to half court to Brandon Knight who threw up a half court shot .. and the students rushed again. The ball went in but it appaered to be shot after the buzzer .. again the court was cleared while the refs checked the replay. The they finally said no shot and Cuse wins .. and those morons rushed the court for the 3rd time. Great spontanaity!!
