Ahead of Last Year

So far so good.

No reports of Paul Chryst being arrested for beating his wife. He hasn’t been caught pulling up to an In-and-Out drive through stark naked looking for someone to slather in any special sauce,

Happy New Years everyone.

I guess our expectations have been lowered. But at least they’re not as low as in Unhappy Valley.

Patience Chas. You still have 6.5 hours (or 7.5 hours if he is still in Wisconsin) 🙂

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 12.31.11 @ 5:23 pm

Oh, come on, Charles, you can do a better lead on than that. Surely! How ’bout something like” “Smooth sailing ahead for Panthers as year ends serenely”. Or how ’bout a word or three abput Pitt’s prepping for the bowl game. Well. happy New Year, everyone! Rev. George in Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 12.31.11 @ 5:27 pm

All is quiet on the Pitt from Chas! GREAT NEWS.

I was talking to the wife of Pitt’s Captains on defense from the 80’s. His mentor was Tony Dungy…this was before Tony Dungy was TONY DUNGY as his wife put it. He had some personal challenges his freshman year and is a strong Christian and Dungy and he became close.

She told me PSU contacted Tony for the Head coaching job?????? Of course he said no. They are getting desperate…and reaching out to many many folks.

Comment by Big Black 12.31.11 @ 5:34 pm

Oh and he is still strong in the Pitt family and he has no news either on coaching moves…..as he put it, it is like courting a chick….lots of shit to go through before ur sure there is a good basis for a marriage.

Appreciate your insights, Big Black. Welcome to the forum!

Happy Anniversary, Mike Haywood.

Lets keep our fingers crossed in hopes that when the ball drops in Times Square, Pitt will finish this with its count of head football coaches locked in at 4 for the past year!

And my wish for the new year is that the count will remain at 1, this time next year.

Happy New Year and Hail to Pitt!

Chas, One more thing that you forgot to mention.
This year we don’t have an A-hole as our head football coach.

Comment by Justinian 12.31.11 @ 11:00 pm

Chryst didn’t get that second guy from Wisky to be DC! Pitt football is doomed!

Sorry, didn’t see anyone do it on the other thread and was really surprised.

Well, we’re 3.37 (so 3 and 1/3rds roughly) hours into 2012. So far *knocks on wood* all is quiet on the western coast.

I want to avoid the ‘S’ word (considering his last name and all), but so far..so good.

Comment by Lou Gagliardi 01.01.12 @ 3:38 am

Happy New Year. A good time to reflect on our blessings and they are many…in 2012, let the Pitt motto be “the harder we work, the luckier we are and we are going to be the luckiest program in the country.

Comment by SFPitt 01.01.12 @ 5:44 am

Happy New Years all and I hope last night was safe and enjoyable for you and your families.

Comment by Reed 01.01.12 @ 7:13 am

SFPitt – that would be a good one but hard to fit on a T-shirt.

My personal favorite slogan was when during the off season between 2007-2008 Wannstedt had t-shirts made up that read “Show Me?” because we were naked 25th in pre-season polls.

Excellent slogan until we shot ourselves in the foot at Heinz Field against Bowling Green in the opener and lost by 10 points. I’ll never forget the post-game interview Wannstedt gave in the locker room with a bunch of players walking around in those shirts.

“This is the season that the Panthers must “Prove It” — a team theme, complete with T-shirts — as they have not posted a winning season in their three under Wannstedt. In fact, if you take away three victories against I-AA teams, Wannstedt’s teams have gone 13-19, and he is still waiting to get to his first bowl game.”

I still haven’t seen any blog entries from Paul Zeise. I think we need file a missing person report.

Comment by Justinian 01.01.12 @ 8:49 am

Justinian, LOL… Paul is out to lunch as usual and when he is around, he regurgitates stories from other outlets. The PG should just let chas and this blog report on Pitt football and hoops!

Comment by Pittfan92 01.01.12 @ 9:53 am

Zeise reports only when he has news .. and he doesn’t regurgitate stories. He was the very first to discount the story about Bradley being hired last January (a few days before Graham was hired.) He also told everyone how foolish the great internet rumor of Fedb 2010.. when the B10 was supposed to announce that Pitt would be its next member … remember that??

He may not always be first .. but he is usually right. He is not in the position that us anonymous bloggers are, and can throw any name that comes up. You don’t see Neil Reidell of the Altoona Mirror bringing up the names of Nick Saban or Les Miles … no, these names come from the PSU blogs

Comment by wbb 01.01.12 @ 10:34 am

ZEISE is some times very good and some times useless as tits on a bull.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.01.12 @ 10:35 am

Favorite Pitt tshirt slogan came from the Carl Krauser era I believe… ‘We All We Got’… obviously he majored in ‘Creative’ Writing

Comment by Big Bill 01.01.12 @ 10:40 am

I meant to say that Zeise doesn’t ‘always’ regurgitate stories. Of course, he will bring frth stories from other sources that he finds to be credible … everyone does.

The fact is that he is assigned to Pitt but the news we are concerned about is coming out of Wisconsin or Caifornia .. and as Reed and others have reported, Pitt will not or should not release any information until after the Rose Bowl when Chryst is no longer affiliated with another college.

Comment by wbb 01.01.12 @ 10:41 am

Totally agreed wbb… We gotta be patient on this and trust PC. Now, if no coaches by weeks end, then we have got some worrying to do. But after the sketchy way Graham left,we gotta let this play out with some class and character.

Comment by Big Bill 01.01.12 @ 10:49 am

Wbb this is 2012 there are cell phones things like this all ways have leaks. i hope i am wrong but unless we are as tight as the CIA which could be. or he is haveing a problem geting a staff i dont know which. but we will know jan 3

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.01.12 @ 10:55 am

FRANKCAN, it’s a dead period – PItt still doesn’t play in over a week and Zeise will be traveling with the team. Wisconsin has a game tomorrow and has been preoccupied with that. I’m not worried at all who his DC will be. There are a lot of good coaches available and PItt has an enticing D for next year.

Zeise’s focus is on the upcoming bowl game, not speculation. Speculation is our jobs. The dude deserves a holiday. Nothing has broke since he disappeared. I took his last Redshirt Diaries post as a signal that he would be on hiatus for a while. If there’s news, I’m sure he’ll report on it.

I agree that sometimes I wish he had more but you have to remember the beat writers for college teams are on a short leash with the University. The University can banish reporters unlike the Pro teams.

Happy New Year to all Panther Fans.

There will be plenty dead horses to kill this year. I look forward to maintaining our standard of being the most critical of fanatics.

Comment by gc 01.01.12 @ 11:49 am

Just throwing this T-shirt slogan out there for those cynical impatient Pitt fans that may want to hold Paul Chryst’S feet to the fire right off the bat in the 2012 Pitt season. I suggest the accompaning graphic to be our Panther Logo decked out with a huge wedge of Limburger as it’s crowning fedora,,, WHERE’S THE CHEESE? LOL.

I’m anxiously awaiting PC’s announcement of his coaching staff. I would have preferred a little more hype from him this past week regarding his major picks but I’ll withold premature judgement until I see what he produces as his ultimate staffing selections. Might be he really is just as low keyed in his actions as his resume presumed.

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.01.12 @ 12:03 pm

I am looking forward to upcoming announcements on the coaching staff and on recruiting. I am hoping to see these as evidence of enough aggressiveness to be successful.

Comment by Houston Panther 01.01.12 @ 12:17 pm

Pitt vs cincinnati tonight. don’t feel too good about it. my keys to the game are: do everything better than the last two games. there’s no 1 thing Pitt needs to do better, they need to do it all better. if I had to pick I’d say play better defense and get out into transition. the latter, however, seems to be something Jamie Dixon doesn’t want to do.

Comment by pk 01.01.12 @ 12:29 pm

Zeise only stopped speculating when he got criticized for continually speculating wrong.

Comment by Mike 01.01.12 @ 12:45 pm

I really don’t think Paul Chryst will have a tough time putting together a good staff. He got a quality hire with his Offensive coordinater Bostad. So what if didn’t get any more of the Wisconsin coaches to leave. They have security there in Madison and they don’t have to uproot their families. Chryst knows people from around the country and you want to have people, who want to come to Pitt.

Comment by Justinian 01.01.12 @ 12:58 pm

Hey guys! Like I said on a previous thread, Relax! I know we need to be right this time with our choice of coaches. But, give Chryst the benefit of the doubt until he screws up. He has a record of success. Successful people are successful for a reason. He is surrounded by successful mentors who staked their rep’s on backing Chryst. I am sure that he is doing what he needs to do to be successful. He has as much to lose as anyone.

I have seen on here and on other blogs how he is not doing enough to contact recruits. That is our bias and our expectations. None of the recruits have echoed those sentiments to my knowledge.

We have the right fit for Pitt. Now let’s allow him to be successful by supporting him, his staff and players.

Happy New Year!
HTP!

What an insult to the stooges, although I did enjoy Wanny’s portrayal of the Great Moe Howard.

Comment by gc 01.01.12 @ 2:06 pm

I just read that PSU is close to deal with Bill O’Brien, New England Pat’s OC, to be new head coach according to USA Today.

Comment by jw in Raleigh 01.01.12 @ 2:07 pm

A few things:

Chryst has been calling committed and prospective recruits as far back as when he accepted the job on Dec 22nd as was reported on TOS pay sites just the other day.

Dr. Tom – he or PITT aren’t going to release any info until Chryst is formally and legally our HC which will happen on Jan 3. It just wouldn’t be appropriate for either PITT or Chryst to tell us who is going to be the ass’t coaches are going to be because… they won’t actually be staff members until they sign thier contracts which will be after Chryst signs his.

Notice that in all the news stories about Bob Bostad coming onto the staff there wasn’t one mention of his being “hired”. That is due to his not having a signed contract yet.

I think the bottom line here is that while we all wants some concrete info we shouldn’t be too worried about Chryst or PITT not being forthcoming provided the circumstances with the Rose Bowl, etc. You know he’s working the phones in anticipation of his new position with both recruits and prospective staff.

Comment by Reed 01.01.12 @ 2:21 pm

Thank you for the update Reed. I, for one, have total confidence that Coach Chryst is a great hire. What is TOS? Just curious.

HTP!!!

Comment by jw in Raleigh 01.01.12 @ 2:35 pm

That’s bullshit. Not one prospective recruit said he called them. Not one.

Comment by mike 01.01.12 @ 2:36 pm

Mike, how do you know who he contacted and didn’t contact?

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 01.01.12 @ 3:02 pm

Mike–lots of reports on Rivals and Scout about Pitt’s verbal commits getting called by Chryst. On the other hand, if you mean other prospects who are not yet committed, I have no idea about any of them one way or another.

Pitt, reed said committed AND prospective.

Comment by pk 01.01.12 @ 3:43 pm

I know because they’ve given interviews and none of them have said they talked to Chryst. He just recently talked to the recruits but he’s yet to talk to one single prospect.

Comment by Mike 01.01.12 @ 5:04 pm

JW – TOS means “The Other Site”.

Comment by Reed 01.01.12 @ 5:54 pm

Reed-Pardon my ignorance. To what “Other Site” are you referring? If there are other great sources of info, I may want to join them to improve my knowledge.

Comment by jw in Raleigh 01.01.12 @ 6:08 pm

Hold on folks – It looks like my fingers got in the way of my brain in regards to the prospective recruits being contacted by Chryst. After reading Mike’s comment I went back and looked at the articles I read and the interviews I watched and they all point to ‘committed’ recruits being called and nothing about non-committed prospects, but I grouped them together. So, I think Mike is correct and my sentence above is incorrect.

Now this makes me wonder about something. Why would there be a dividing line between the two camps in Chryst’s actions? At first I thought that because he’s still under contract as a staff coach to UW his doing anything with prospective recruits for PITT would make him a ‘booster’ since he isn’t on PITT’s staff as yet.

But then that would apply to the committed kids also as they haven’t signed LOIs either and he’s calling them, so that theory is dead. I don’t think that PITT would allow Chryst to do anything against the NCAA rules regarding recruiting, but it is confusing to me.

I don’t think it is any type of laziness on Chryst’s part because he’s still taking the time to reassure the committed kids they are welcome at PITT. I’m sure he’s busy as hell being the UW OC prior to the Rose Bowl but there is always time to call kids.

The other alternative is that Graham’s targets aren’t what Chryst’s will be. He may have a completely different list of kids he wants to fill the rest of the scholarships with – or maybe even wants to save some scholarships for next year. At this point we have 19 commitments and, I believe, four open spots… before any transfers or 5th year seniors being ushered out.

Huh, I really don’t know what is the answer here… but I’d think there is a good reason for it.

My theory is that he ran out of minutes on his cell phone and can’t figure out how to put more on. I have the same problem.
