I do believe a good bit about what Khem Birch said to CBSSports.com’s Jeff Goodman about leaving Pitt — well at least the part about not being particularly close to his teammates and feeling isolated. When you look at most of the places Birch cites for potential transfer destinations, they are programs that happen to have a Canadian player on the team. Pitt by the way, has released Birch to transfer to anywhere except Missouri.

Other aspects I’m not so sure about. Check out PittScript for a good running account of everything from yesterday — including the Mizzou tampering allegations. Mizzou has denied any tampering allegations, and it seems Pitt buys it — because the contact appears to have come from some of the people around Birch. And those same people are the reason Mizzou really doesn’t want much to do with Birch.

Birch also insists that he is in no rush to get to the NBA.

Maybe he isn’t, but those around sure seem to give that vibe. Pushing him to go somewhere else mid-year to play in a different system. To up his draft stock.

And this is the problem. Birch insists this decision was his and his mother’s. Everyone else has been saying a lot of pressure to bolt came from people around him. A  lot of hanger-ons and people looking to cash in on him. They appear to be manipulating Birch. Those people are still around him.

That Missouri is implying that behind-the-scenes and publicly by stating they have no interest in him, says volumes.

He is obviously starting to hear and see things about the way he is perceived — or those around him are. The interview seemed a bit of spin control effort.

He has some great talent and potential, but there is a much longer list of players who quickly washed out of the NBA (or never even made it). Those with as much potential or more who had so many of the peripheral issues do more than just distract.

Birch may be a nice kid. Immature and naive as well. The fact is, that is, that excuse only lasts so long. At some point it becomes his responsibility to take control. Ultimately it is his actions by which people will decide what kind of person he is.

Sounds like a cry baby to me. When he wasn’t catered to, he took his ball and went home. Yes he sound naive and gullible. He would have developed quickly at Pitt, been toughened up, and developed different parts of his game. Sam Young certainlly benefitted with his time at Pitt, he became a better defender, learned to play the small forward position and dramatically improved his shooting. Birch’s “handlers” are doing him a diservice.

Comment by Justinian 12.30.11 @ 12:17 pm

Maybe they should have school for “handlers”.

For their own good, never a good ending when someone is rushed through. If the handlers were smart, they’d know, that most guys need a couple years of college to get into the NBA.

Unless you’re LeBron or a few of the others, you will double or triple your money by staying in school for a few years.

You will then probably expand your career from 1 or 2 years, to possibly 10 or more.

Silly handlers, if they only knew, it would be better for everyone.

Comment by Dan 12.30.11 @ 12:26 pm

I don’t know how much support the others on the team gave him, but I’m guessing not a hell of a lot.

Comment by steve 12.30.11 @ 12:31 pm

I can’t believe Dixon didn’t feel this kid out before letting him enroll here. what does this say about dixon being able to get the five star kids?…it’s hard cuz weve been so succesfull with the three and four star projects..will he need to change coaching style while in the acc with the big boys??

Comment by pitt-for-life 12.30.11 @ 1:29 pm

What do you mean by saying “in the ACC with the big boys”? Are you implying that the Big East is somehow inferior to the ACC in basketball? Take away Duke and UNC and there is not much left to the ACC. Take away the Top two Big East teams (if you can decide who the top two teams are) and you are still left with at least 4 Elite teams.

Comment by Ghost of Pete Gonzalez 12.30.11 @ 1:40 pm

Agree. BE is better top to bottom than ACC. Until Pitt and Cuse join the ACC, that is. Then the ACC will hold that title.

Birch will regret his choice. this is a lose-lose. Not blaming Jamie, but we need to replace Birch’s shot blocking and hustle on D, and so far we haven’t.

Comment by Bossdaws 12.30.11 @ 1:53 pm

Actually, the Big East has been the best conference the past few years. Arguably, certainly, but discussing and watching and reading, seems like almost everyone has given the nod to the Big East lately.

Even the ACC pundits.

Not being biad either, I could care less, but it seems to be that the ACC had it for a few years, then they both kind of went back and forth for a few years, and the past couple, the BE has been top dog.

Now, when Pitt, Syracuse and WVU leave, with the former two going to the ACC, there won’t be much of a question.

Not to argue, but how do we know Dixon didn’t feel him out. He could have had all the right answers then and said all the right things.

In my mind, Dixon has carte blanche for awhile, but, I do believe he will need to adapt a bit more, not for the ACC really, but, it seems some teams have figured out his vanilla “o” a bit, more for the future in general.

Comment by Dan 12.30.11 @ 2:04 pm

I am not saying this is a good thing just saying that years ago some schools would pick a team mate
or a cheerleader to be friends with star players so they did not get lonley there first year.
you know some one to hang with becuse they thought stars needed special treatment so they dident get home sick

Handlers are like speculators, they do not look out for the long term or for anyone’s particular interest. Their one and only concern is the quick buck and screw everyone else.

Sports reflect society.

Comment by EMel 12.30.11 @ 2:14 pm

The ACC has several other good to sometimes great programs other than Duke & Carolina. They have just been a little down, as of late.

But Maryland won the National Championship in 2003 I believe. And always has a very good program since the Lefty Driscell days.

Georgia Tech has had some very good if not great teams.
Wake Forest had some very great teams with Tim Duncan and going way back with Billy Packer.

NC State has won 2 National Championships, and PITT fans should know about at least one of those.

Boston College always had a good to very good team in the BigEast and will rise again.

UVA has had great teams with Ralph Sampson and Jeff Lamp and other greats.

Clemson always has a pretty good team and is usually in the NCAA’s and Va tech is improving under former Pitt asst. Seth Greenberg.

Florida State always has great athletes on their team and are building are pretty good program.

And then you add PITT & Syracuse to that. It will be just as good if not better than the BigEast. Granted the BigEast has been better the last few years. BUT THINGS NEVER STAY THE SAME.

I know the older guys know this axiom.

The ACC will be cycling back up.

Comment by EMel 12.30.11 @ 2:25 pm

great idea FRANKCAN. If someone had the foresight to hook Birch up with the Mutually Beneficial Arrangement chick on the right, we would have had a “mutually beneficial arrangement” and Birch would still be here.

Comment by Bossdaws 12.30.11 @ 2:39 pm

Dixon’s style, which only works in regular season and consistently underachieves in March, is why he left.

Many of us were hoping he would go more uptempo once he had the athletes.

Rather, he did a 180. He recruited the athletes, and tried to mold them to his stale style of offense.

THIS is why Pitt’s ceiling under dixon was reached years ago. Despite having BY FAR the second best team in the country (PITT and UNC had most talent, zero question about it) with the Blair/Young/Fields team… he STILL couldnt get it done in March.

He never will

We might as well look forward to 2012, where Jamie surely will get back to peaking in January and having a few big Monday wins over Cuse.

Dont hold your breath for a tourney run, this Birch experiment was TERRIBLE for future recruiting

Comment by DeVanzo 12.30.11 @ 2:41 pm

TX Panther, I thought that your post re: Jamie Dixon on another thread was really dumb, but you have competition. I may even have to apologize to you. In comparison, DeVanzo is making you look smart.

Comment by BigGuy 12.30.11 @ 2:55 pm

DeVanzo…you are right – that 08-09 team had a ton of talent…I guess it was Jamie’s job to physically go on the court and guard Scottie Reynolds…I get the coaches told them to not foul but if a team loaded with top players can’t guard someone for like 4 seconds why is that Jamie’s fault?

Comment by BCPITT 12.30.11 @ 2:58 pm

I also guess Jamie should have went out and made that second free throw that Gil missed last year against Butler or even better reached out to grab Nas by the back of the neck to stop that inexplicable foul on Howard.

Comment by BCPITT 12.30.11 @ 3:03 pm

Devanzo, please shed some knowledge on why the Birch incident will be bad for Pitt’s future recruiting. Flighty kid does like he did in high school – not stay in one place too long. Pitt will be fine. From the tone of your post, I’d guess you are either a youngster (which is OK) or one of the newer fans (which is OK as well). People that have been going to the games prior to the Ben / Jamie era appreciate what jamie has done here. If you are not a youngster, you are not someone that voted for jason white for Heisman, are you?

Comment by Ghost of Pete Gonzalez 12.30.11 @ 3:07 pm

Devanzo may be on to something i know you all like to jump on him but we will have to change are style of play when we go to the ACC you all know that the big east style wont work in the ACC.
so why not do it now and see if the team plays better we are all ready loseing games what can it hurt.

The word is that Dixon did indeed “feel” Birch out, and probably wouldn’t have even pursued him if it hadn’t been a slam dunk thanks to Pat Skerry.

Comment by JW 12.30.11 @ 3:23 pm

“you all know that the big east style wont work in the ACC”

FRANKCAN, I enjoy your posts. They generally are insightful but not inciting. However, I have to take issue with your statement. I, for one, do not know that the BE style will not work in the ACC. I seem to remember a game in MSG a few years back against Duke. If I remember correctly, our style seemed to work just fine. Also, I believe that UConn’s style of play served them well last year.

Comment by BigGuy 12.30.11 @ 3:25 pm

Jaylon Bond would have been a great player to bad we gave him up for birch.

Comment by Tackle made by Hugh 12.30.11 @ 3:30 pm

Jaylen Bond is averaging about 15.5 minutes of playing time per game at Texas while Ashton Gibb’s brother, Sterling, is averaging about 10.4 mpg. Bond is averaging 5.2 ppg while Gibbs is averaging 3.6 ppg.

Comment by Velvil 12.30.11 @ 4:27 pm

I’m starting to tire about the explanations of “homesickness” in reference to Birch. Thousands of new soldiers, sailors, and airmen join the armed forces every year–many of them the same age as Birch. These service men and women have had to go off to foreign lands, in far worse conditions than Birch has had, and many of them won’t see the US again–much less their home town–for multiple semesters of school.

Birch is a basketball diva. He hit a little turbulence on the path of his basketball career, and bailed out. It’s not a trait that will serve him well in his life.

Comment by Lou 12.30.11 @ 4:46 pm

I’m with Lou.

Mainly I’m pissed off because his departure seemed to send our season into turmoil just when it looked like Pitt had gotten their shit together.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 12.30.11 @ 5:31 pm

Couldn’t have said it better Lou. Tired of the “he’s just a kid” thing too.

I realized a lot when I saw his twitter moniker..
“Mtrls Gift” or whatever it was. Anyhow, translated to Montreal’s Gift.

That says enough. And whether his “handlers” or family put those thoughts there or not, is irrelavant, that’s where his head is right now.
He’s Montreal’s gift to the basketball world.

Comment by Dan 12.30.11 @ 5:46 pm

Hey, also Lou. The “foreign” country excuse. He’s from friggin’ Montreal. The one that is a few miles from the New York and Vermont border. He’s not from Thailand or Belarus!!!!! LOL

Homesick??? Why are his schools of choice all over the place including Texas???

Shouldn’t he be enrolling at the University of Montreal???

Comment by Dan 12.30.11 @ 5:53 pm

BIG GUY what i ment bye that is they dont play as rough in ACC and unless we change it will be foul city on us every night

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.30.11 @ 6:42 pm

This kid reminds me of a name from the past, Jamal Faulkner. Old timers will remember him. He had all the potential in the world, and ended up at a different school each year and never made it.
Birch had trouble figuring out when he was done lwith high school let alone picking the correct college. My guess he wll turn into a bball vagabond and will soon be forgotten by all.

Comment by Jimbo 12.30.11 @ 7:03 pm

Gotta woner if Pitt’s style has to change with the move to the ACC… given that Dixon recruits / recruited “tough kids” …NYC/ Bronx types that can battle in Big East. ACC seems to me more of a “tempo” conference. At some point the philopsophy may have to change….. just a thought.

Comment by zero93 12.30.11 @ 7:26 pm

And I betting the refs call a “different game” as well…..

Comment by zero93 12.30.11 @ 7:31 pm

I think the referee angle brought up my zero may have a bigger impact than the competition. They let you play in the BE and B1G, but not so much in the ACC.

Comment by wbb 12.30.11 @ 7:38 pm

Wbb thanks that is wwhat i was trying to say to Big Guy but you put it better.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.30.11 @ 8:41 pm

If you actually read what he said in his interview, the main issue seems to be not getting to play the 4. For a player with NBA aspirations, this is an actual and real issue and something I’m sure Dixon promised him would happen if he signed. Dixon did the same thing to Dante Taylor, sticking him at center and never letting him develop as a power forward. Maybe these moves are in the best interests of the program, but you can’t fault a kid for feeling hoodwinked and wanting out.

That said, Jamie Dixon is amazing. But these are the casualties of war when you need to lie to recruit.

Comment by ROCKPANTHER 12.30.11 @ 10:09 pm

thats wut i mean wen i said the big guys…duke and nc..that’s who we will be competing with..and the acc will be the best confrence wen us and the cuse go…..and i agree…that our style will not fit well in the acc…all acc teams are athletic..and wut do we struggle with??..athletic teams..

Who cares?

Comment by SFPitt 12.30.11 @ 11:23 pm

“you all know that the big east style wont work in the ACC”

FRANKCAN, wbb, zero93, pitt-for-life, you may have a point. I didn’t consider differences in refereeing and foul calling between BE refs and ACC refs.

Comment by BigGuy 12.30.11 @ 11:58 pm

Velvil: I think it’s pretty clear. Just listen to Taylor’s high school coach.

“I can tell you for sure he’s not a center, by any stretch of the imagination,” said Trevor Brown, the coach at National Christian Academy… I was led to believe he’d be playing the four””People call me and say…Why is he playing the center spot?’

In Birch’s case, that he transferred two months in and said he wanted to play the 4. Pretty obvious it’s a repeated pattern. I love Dixon and all but it definitely seems like he pulled a bait and switch on these two. I think Birch made the right choice for himself. Sucks, because I wish he was at Pitt but you can’t get mad at a kid for looking out for himself when Dixon isn’t.

Comment by ROCKPANTHER 12.31.11 @ 12:25 am

The problem is that Taylor never showed the skills to play the 4 either and Zanna earned that spot. If Taylor had beaten our Zanna then their roles would be reversed. In regards to Birch, with Adams coming in and Gilbert waiting in the wings he would have been the 4 next year. 5 was easiest way to get him on the court. Birch already wasn’t a player favorite…imagine if he had started ahead of Nas at the 4. It would have been a disaster in the locker room.

As much as Taylor has been a disappointment on the court, he never complains and his teammates seem to love him. He represents the University well so don’t hate on the kid for not living up to expectations.

On top of that, we haven’t had a guard with the balls to get the ball into the post since Fields.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.31.11 @ 8:40 am

Suddenly everyone’s criticising Jamie Dixon. This playing out of position stuff is bullshit. In the 1980s Charles Smith want to remain at forward, but didn’t win until he moved to center. If I recall, Jerome Lane did ok at power forward, leading the nation in rebounding 2 consecutive years. You do what’s best for the team! All these guys were stars on their high school and AAU teams. You can’t start catering to 1st year players. If Birch wants to the big fish, he can go to 2nd or 3rd rate program where he can be the star immediately. Also all this stuff about Pitt not being able coach on the big stage, the Big East is as big as it gets. If DeJuan Blair stayed 1 or 2 more years Pitt would have done a lot better in the NCAAs. Last year Pitt lost to Butler with Nassir Robinson’s brain freeze foul 90 ft. from the basket and Butler went on to make to final game. We lost on Kemba Walker’s last second shot in the Big East tournament and lost with no time on the clock to Butler. We were a point or two away from beating the two teams that played in the national cmpionship game.

Comment by Justinian 12.31.11 @ 8:51 am

Well said Justinian.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.31.11 @ 8:59 am

I believe there is a difference between telling a kid,

“ya, I see you as a 4, that’s where you belong, we do switch around to help the team and play wherever needed, we’re a team, but, in the long run, ya, you’re a 4”

and

“yes Khem, you are a 4, that’s the only place you’ll ever play, you’re a 4, that’s what I’m recruiting you for, a 4. That’s it, bank it, count on it, you’re only ever gonna play a 4”.

I find it hard to believe the latter is what Dixon told Birch.

And, let’s see. Between Dixon and Howland, including Dixon being a main recruiter when he wasn’t a head coach, we have 11-12 years now of them having a track record of being pretty honest, very few problems with players, very little problem with team chemistry,

no, I’m gonna side with Dixon on this one.

Comment by Dan 12.31.11 @ 9:00 am

Pitt’s not the only school with this problem. McDonald’s All American’s seem like a delicate bunch.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.31.11 @ 9:11 am

I’d also have to question Trevor Brown, Dante Taylor’s head coach, even with my miniscule basketball knowledge, if he thinks Dante Taylor could be a 4 in big time college basketball.

p.s. not “mad” at the kid, and I wish him no harm, but, he’s not above being called out a bit.

Comment by Dan 12.31.11 @ 9:15 am

In this case, the only way Birch is going to learn is to be called out. Better it happens now before it’s too late for him to make a legit career out of basketball.

If he wants to be the star of the team and play right away, I’m sure Towson could use him.

Comment by Tossing Thabeets 12.31.11 @ 9:29 am

Birch doesn’t have the tools right now (who knows about the future) to play the 4. Thin, weak, no discernible power moves (yet), couldn’t rebound against the bigs (got shoved around) — and don’t point to the weak non-cons as proof he can rebound, look at the 2 majors we played. He’s he a great shot blocker? Sure. Can he run the floor? Yup? But that’s why he’s a 5 right now. Assuming he put the work in on the floor and weight room, could he have been a 4 next year or will he be elsewhere? Maybe.

As for Taylor’s coach, maybe a bit of CYA there for him. The kid clearly came to Pitt playing just on his athleticism (yes, a very good high school athlete here in DC compared to others) but he clearly wasn’t coached to be college ready at the 4. Does anyone really think he’s be better at the 4 and Dixon made a mistake moving him to the 5?

Comment by velvil 12.31.11 @ 11:53 am

The kid still doesn’t get it. What major D1 school is going to give him major minutes “trying to develop his 4 man skills?” He might get 5 minutes a half doing that before it is disruptive for the team.

Secondly, why did he come to Pitt in the first place if he needs an up-tempo pace? I wish we would run more than we do too but we don’t and apparently never will. Did he not watch Pitt hoops before this year?

How does being around another Canadian help? It isn’t like he came from Russia. Does he only speak French or something?

I don’t know. Something just ain’t adding up.

Comment by bdubb 12.31.11 @ 1:25 pm

It is not Canadian companionship he needs and maybe the reason no one on the team reached out to him is because he acted as if he was better than them. Sure sounds like he feels that way. Not a good way to make friends in any walk of life.
Reminds me of the QB Jeff George…multiple schools, some talent and not a friend in the world. Career was cut short by his inability to work with others.

Comment by SFPitt 12.31.11 @ 2:25 pm

Arguing that Dixon is doing Birch or Taylor a disservice by giving them a lot of minutes at the 5 instead of letting them ride the bench as the second or third best 4, is just crap. There’s a lot of development that takes place among young players just by getting minutes of any kind. A good player will learn from the experience and it will ultimately make them a better player.

Who thinks THIS conversation ever took place:
J.D.: “Oh sorry Dejuan. You’re definitely going to be a 4 in the Pro’s. I don’t want to screw up your NBA skills by giving you two years of playing experience at the 5 spot.”

Comment by Financepro 12.31.11 @ 6:19 pm

Finacepro DeJuan may not be the best analogy. He played the 5 spot all through high school and did not have the skills to move to the 4 in college or pro.

Because of the developed skills in high school playing the 5 and his unique physical structure and the lack of quality big men in college he dominated in college.

San Antinio tried to make him a 4 but he does not have the skills and has to play at the 5. He does well with Duncan helping at the 4 but has trouble with bigger centers in the NBA.

Neither Birch nor Taylor have a future as a center in the NBA and if they do have the talent for the next level they have been short changed by Dixon not playing them a the 4. Taylor with McGee solid at the 5 should have been given the chance to play behind Naz at the 4. If he had the skills Dixon and the Pitt coaches thought when they recruited him by the end of his sophmore year he would have supplaned Naz.

This year Birch, Taylor, and Zanna would have had to rotate behind Zanna at the 5 until Adams arrived but they should have been used at the 4 made their mistakes early in the year and hopefully make big steps by Feb. and Mar. (as Calhoun and Boeheim do with their 5 star’s) play them lose early and see if they develop by the tournament (Jermy Lamb/Johnny Davis)
