New DC on the Horizon?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Reed @ 1:27 pm

I just got word from a very reliable source, who learned first hand,  that Jim Tomsula, the Defensive Line coach for the San Francisco 49ers,  will be joining Paul Chryst as an assistant coach at PITT.  I would think that would be as a DC but I’m not sure on that count at all.

Thomsula has a pretty extensive coaching back ground in both football and carpet sales. ..

” Part of his coaching career was spent at his alma mater, Catawba College in North Carolina. He began there as a volunteer defensive line coach in 1997. He also worked part-time as a carpeting salesman and lived out of his car for part of the time while coaching at Catawba.’

Man, you have to just love that after all we’ve been through the last 12 months.

After reading this please understand that this is the first time I’ve every cited a ‘source’ on here and will probably be my last, but this info is too trustworthy not to share with The Blather folks.  If the guy who told me this is wrong I’ll kill him.

This would be a great hire. Couldn’t be happier if its true.

I believe the same ‘source’ told Chas two weeks ago that Tomsula would be the new Pitt HC

Birch is finally starting to speak out. He said he left becasue he wanted to be a power forward and he was not learning those skills by playing center. He also said he did not get along with the players. As much as I like JD there is something to be said about positioning players. I wonder how much better Taylor would be if he were at forward as advertised out of HS. He was pushed into being a center because there was no other player with his height. Same for Birch.

It takes a special mentality to play the post and neither Taylor or Birch have it. Taylor has stuck by his commitment while Birch decided to leave.

Interesting. So he goes from a speciously rumored possible Pitt HC

to a possible DC or so at Pitt.

My concern is his lack of any recruiting history. Chryst and Bostad are not known for their recruiting prowess. The hope/expectation is that he would look to get some coaching staff that have recruiting chops.

Coaching acumen and even the desire to coach aren’t in question. But talent is still a necessity.

Comment by Chas 12.29.11 @ 2:02 pm

If true, this has the makings of a pretty awesome staff. Rumors out there today that Huxtable is coming, too. Supposedly as the DC.

Comment by The Incline 12.29.11 @ 2:06 pm

wbb, yea but it was made clear that that was just a rumor. this would be a great hire. it believed by many members of the San francisco media that tomsula is responsible for making sf’s front 7 into one of the best in the NFL. ha, tbh whether it’s tomsula or huxtable, Id be thrilled either way.

so which is it, tomsula or huxtable? reed?

Comment by pk 12.29.11 @ 2:32 pm

I would love this hire if it’s true. I think the players would love playing for this guy. He has been an outstanding coach for the 49ers. Nolan hired him but was the only guy Singletary and Harbaugh kept on board. That means something.

the heck with the new DC … what’s the scoop on the ‘Mutually Beneficial Arrangements’?

Comment by wbb 12.29.11 @ 2:54 pm

Tomsula is an awesome guy and will be a great recruiter.

Comment by Jdubb 12.29.11 @ 2:57 pm

LOL @wbb…I have been hiding the side bar while frequenting the blather at work due to that side bar!!

Comment by BCPITT 12.29.11 @ 3:02 pm

If he can sell carpet he can sell PITT

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.29.11 @ 3:05 pm

The again he was living in his car so he couldn’t have been that great a closer…..

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 12.29.11 @ 3:08 pm

Why would Tomsula go from being a hot coach on a hot team to being an assistant at Pitt? Doesn’t make sense.

Comment by Mike 12.29.11 @ 3:18 pm

mike, because he’s from Pittsburgh and because he could be promoted from d line coach to defensive coordinator

Comment by pk 12.29.11 @ 3:22 pm

d line coach for the 49ers to defensive coordinator a pitt is not a promotion

Comment by Mike 12.29.11 @ 3:38 pm

my guess would be that working for Chryst is much better than working for Harbaugh

Comment by wbb 12.29.11 @ 3:44 pm

“Mutually Beneficial Arrangements” though awesome is totally NSFW … I’ve been busted on a few occasions, once by my CEO. “So “Melba” .. what do we have here?”

Comment by MelbaPlace 12.29.11 @ 3:46 pm

Dokish reporting Huxtable not coming to Pitt. Says Tomsula sounds too good to be true but hopes it’s true.

Comment by Mike 12.29.11 @ 3:50 pm

Wbb – I won’t speak for Chas but I believe he posted that article a while ago in response to chatter on the internet and the media. I posted this today because it came from someone with concrete knowledge of the situation.

Again, I’m not sure he’ll actually be the DC but I firmly believe that he’s coming here on staff.

As I said, this is the only time I’ve ever stated “a source” without identifying him and will probably be the last but I was asked to keep a confidence from the guy I was talking with. I’m not an ‘insider’ myself by any means but this guy is, at least for this situation.

This isn’t real shocking news either as you state above its been talked about for some time. So I thought I’d share.

Comment by Reed 12.29.11 @ 3:55 pm

Dokish also wrote 2 different articles since Chryst’s hire that included speculation that Todd Orlando would be the DC.

Reed, since Chas’ article about Tomsula was so tongue-in-cheek, I wasn’t sure if you were serious

Comment by wbb 12.29.11 @ 3:59 pm

Wbb – No, I’m serious and I’ll tell the source after the fact. As I said earlier – I’ll invite you to his funeral if this doesn’t pan out the way he said it would. But it will I think.

BTW – not sure it will be as DC – that was some speculation on my part and personally I think Orlando, from what I read, would be a good one. All I want is an aggressive defense as I think that is the way to go in college ball.

Either way these hires, when they happen, sound pretty good so far all around, HC included.

Comment by Reed 12.29.11 @ 4:06 pm

Reed do you think Tomsula would leave a steady NFL position coaching job for anything less a DC position on the NCAA level? I guess not that is why you speculate as such – maybe his role is yet to be defined.

Maybe AHC/DC combo title?

Comment by BCPITT 12.29.11 @ 4:16 pm

BCPITT – I don’t if Tomsula goes AC/DC and I really don’t care about his sex life.

Seriously? I have no idea what the motivations are with this. I would think that Tomsula probably sees it as an inroad to the college coaching ranks where he would be more upward mobility than in the NFL.

There are 112 DC jobs and 112 HC jobs on Div I teams so right there are a lot of job opportunities.

He’s only 43 so has a lot of coaching ahead of him.

Comment by Reed 12.29.11 @ 4:47 pm

Jim graduated 1 yr before me at Steel Valley. We still keep in touch. This guy is a class act and is one of themost passionate people I know! Plus he knows ball. He is a great teacher and leader. Perfect for young men!

Comment by Big Black 12.29.11 @ 5:36 pm

REED some one is pulling your lag.
SCOUT. COM AND FOOTBALL SCOOP both have HUXTABLE as comeing to PITT and he is not comeing to coach LB he could do that at wisconsin.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.29.11 @ 6:04 pm

FRANK – I don’t think so… as I said it may not be as DC but as a position coach. Saying DC was a bit of speculation on my part.

IMO it would be great to get both though.

Comment by Reed 12.29.11 @ 6:13 pm

Bielema already said today that Huxtable isn’t coming to Pitt so it looks like scout.com an football scoop are the ones that are wrong. Not surprising on either.

Comment by Mike 12.29.11 @ 6:14 pm

BIG BLACK can you call the man if you keep in touch we would like a heads up on this.
REED if your man is right tomsula sounds as good as the outher. if he can recruit

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.29.11 @ 7:11 pm

Frank – maybe it’s just my belief that PITT Football is due for a productive, non-drama filled few years, but I’m getting pretty excited to see how this unfolds with Chryst.

Comment by Reed 12.29.11 @ 10:00 pm

I saw Jimmy a few months back at his Aunts funeral. He said he would like to be home. He made the comment that his pipe dreams have a tendacy to come true. He has a young kid and two teenage daughters. He did bitch about the cost of living and said he really love college coaching and as a side benefit his girl could go to school for free and he could kick ass if she is bothered :-)…really. Jimmy’s drive is not money positions or power. Its about family and coaching. Believe it. When he told me he was going to coach over a beer with several SV grads at Chiodos we thought he was crazy…..10 grand??? Dude WTF. He said I am going to make it….do what u love and u will love what u do!

I asked Jimmy via test if he is planning a move. His response back is “It has to be a package deal, They got to bring in Chep to get me”. Bill Cherpack (TJ’s coach) and Jimmy graduated together. Of course he was joking. But the next text was “Hmmmmmm, we may be hanging out a dukes (bar on 8th ave, all SV guys)more often”….so he is not showing his cards!
