Pitt Takes a Safety/Corner

Call it talking a flyer. Finding a possible diamond in the rough. Whatever you want, but Pitt picked up a commit from one Jahmahl Pardner today. Pardner is a 0 to 2 star recruit out of Rochester, NY. Rivals.com has him unrated, while both Scout.com and ESPN.com (Insider subs.) say he’s a 2-star recruit.

Pardner had interest from BC, Rutgers and Penn State. However, they did not offer him. His best  offers aside from Pitt came from MAC schools.

Pardner is 6-0 to 6-1, 170 to 179 pounds. He plays cornerback for now, but is likely to be moved to safety. There is some potential, per the ESPN.com scouting report.

Pardner is a two-way stand out at the high school level with very good athleticism and ball skills. Has more than adequate height and some length on his frame to assist his very good extension and high-point skills. Shows above average football speed but is not a burner and his lack of great explosiveness and overall speed is a concern when projecting for the next level. Will likely get recruited at safety where he shows well-rounded skills-set and his speed fits best. Instinctive with good physicality. … Could have difficulty breaking down sharply and defending in space. Gets downhill on run support and takes good angles. Productive in the first level as a tackler but will need added bulk and strength to continue producing as a box safety in college. Overall, Pardner is a very productive football player at the high school level with solid athleticism and ball skills that could be falling under the radar on the recruiting trail, but he is likely a mid-major type of prospect.

So, likely to redshirt and get bigger and stronger. Apparently the Pitt coaches see some potential in him.

Welcome to the Panthers.

Hey, Tyler Palko quarterbacking the Chiefs tonight. I’m a Chief’s fan tonight! Go Tyler! I never thought I would see him starting in the NFL no matter how many people were hurt but good for him and his perseverance.

Coach Graham’s first words to the new recruit…
“Howdy Pardner”????? huh? c’mon, give it to me!!!

Good story about Palko in PG today …he gives a lot of credit to Matt Cavanaugh (former OC at Pitt)

Tme will tell regarding Mr. Pardner, however, you have to wonder why Syracuse did not show any interest. Rocha Cha is only about 70 miles from
The Land of Orange. Of course it is very possible that SU is asleep when it comes to recruiting.

Panko time tonight.Let him beat Giselle.

Pitts depth in the secondary is ridiculous. their returning all of the starters from this year, plus the guys behind them, the transfers from nd and Michigan, with another possibly on the way, and all of this years recruits. the secondary has actually been strong this year and it looks like that will continue.

alright Dan…I’ll give it to ya (Howdy Pardner). We could use a gunslinger in the secondary. Hopefully a hitter.

RichRod hired by Arizona…..how many Pitt assistants will go back to their former bossman?
Impact on our recruiting? He’s a dirtbag and will do nothing to help Pitt….I would not be surprised if he hasn’t already been burning up the phone lines to PBurg.

Pitt guy coaching hoops, WVU guy coaching football. Weird.

Speaking of dirtbags, WSJ exposes JoePa:

I’ll trust Graham on his recruiting instincts. He obviously doesn’t care too much about the star ranking system when filling out his quotas.

He has either started or played four two-star true freshman already this season…

I. Bennett
R. Jones
J. Brinson
L. Carrington

…and 10 other three star and above true freshman. If the kid can contribute then he can play early.

As too all the DBs. Look for some of those kids to switch positions. Some will go up to LB and Banks and others will move to offense.

And, SD, the NYT finally relates the Renee Portland story, another black eye for the Veiled Valley.

Good article in the WSJ. That is the norm for major college sports programs. PSU is not alone.

FWIW–One of the Pgh newspapers (can’t recall which) this AM stated that Pardners also had a Georgia Tech offer.

The kid dose have good size and decent speed for a DB prospect. Presumably, with limited ships remaining (and reportedly a decent number of excellent prospects with strong Pitt interest still available), the coaches see him as a true sleeper with “4-star” potential.

Wow..the WSJ article is something. Can you imagine these words were written more than six years ago in an email to Dr. Spanier from the person in charge of enforcing the PSU code of conduct on football players:

“Coach Paterno would rather we NOT inform the public when a football player is found responsible for committing a serious violation of the law and/or our student code,” she wrote, “despite any moral or legal obligation to do so.”

I guess those words still ring true today.

FWIW, upper-state NY is not a fertile ground for high school football players and it could well be that the ratings services jsut haven’t gotten a chance to evaluate. them. Two players of note from this general area — Tony Collins and Dion Lewis .. who, of course, was sent to a New Jersey academy so he would play in an a competitive hS envrionment

Comment by wbb 11.22.11 @ 3:42 pm

correction — Kevin Collier (not Tony Collins — actually I meant Conredge Collins)
