Brawl At Night

The Backyard Brawl is set for 7pm on Friday, November 25 on ESPN.

I’m sure it will be a sedate and relaxed crowd for the game.

Unless they change it, the Pitt/Penn basketball game on th 25th is also at 7pm. TV info for that game I have is “Comcast”

Comment by UPDave 11.14.11 @ 12:13 pm

If Cincy loses at Rutgers this Saturday, then Pitt and WVU will be tied for 1st place going into the game … just as we had envisioned at the start of the year, right?

Comment by wbb 11.14.11 @ 12:22 pm

Slightly unrelated — since it’s not Pitt — but the Pens also play at 7pm. Good night to find your favorite sports bar that has multiple screens!

Comment by Hank the Tank 11.14.11 @ 12:39 pm

UPDave, I know that Comcast channel 188 (Pgh area) carries a lot of Phildalephia area sports .. so maybe the Penn game is on that channel

Comment by wbb 11.14.11 @ 1:07 pm

Cinci and RU would still have the tie breaker over Pitt.. due to the head to heads…

we need cincy to lose 2 of 3.. and RU to lose one more. aaah what a sorry state for the big east.

Comment by snala the panther 11.14.11 @ 1:24 pm

Just to make sure there is a “festive” environment in Hoopieville, they will be selling the revelers more beer once they leave their respective tailgates at 7 PM (which they started at 7 AM)and take their seats. Now that the game will actually mean something, plus the whole Big East/ACC/Big 12 merry go round, the only thing I can think of to make this situation more potent is for the ushers to hand out molotove cocktails as folks enter the stadium. No Pitt fan with any regard for their own life would attend this game.

Comment by wally 11.14.11 @ 1:48 pm

Doubt the hoops game time gets changed. I think it maybe part of a Palestra double-header. If so, the only possible option would be to flip the 7 & 9:00 PM games.

Comment by pitt1972 11.14.11 @ 2:29 pm

looks like a good game to record (if you can)

Comment by wbb 11.14.11 @ 2:31 pm

Thanks ESPN for re-scheduling the game time. And what happened at Morganhole in the last night game?

Comment by EMel 11.14.11 @ 2:50 pm

Tyler Palko may start for KC Chiefs next game. Yesterday vs Denver, Cassell was pulled due to injuries and Tyler went 5 for 6 to lead a 4th quarter FG drive to put the Chiefs within a TD, but never got back on the field.

Comment by wbb 11.14.11 @ 4:28 pm

I’m sure brothers will be effing their sisters in MoganHole on NOv 5th.

Comment by Yup 11.14.11 @ 4:31 pm

This year reminds me a lot of 2004…a lot of crazy stuff had to happen for Pitt to win the Big East that year and it did…All you guys just gotta believe…Cincy loses 2 more, Rutgers loses 1 more, Panthers win the next two and we win the Big East!!!!…

Comment by Leaseman 11.14.11 @ 4:53 pm

With Collaros out Cinci could easily lose two more games.

Comment by Presto Panther 11.14.11 @ 5:38 pm

…if this is anything like 2004 I wouldn’t want any part of that BCS game. Me and my buddies were three of very few Pitt fans that made that trip to Tempe and I obviously it was NOT pretty. I would rather see Pitt miss a bowl entirely than see another national embarassment like that again.

Comment by BCPITT 11.14.11 @ 5:38 pm

What a morbid bunch!…you bitch when they lose but then you would rather they lose so they aren’t invited to a bowl game which they might lose??…

Comment by Leaseman 11.14.11 @ 5:52 pm

I’m not saying I wish them to lose and not get invited to a bowl…but if you asked me would I rather have no bowl or a BCS with THIS team THIS year I would say no bowl. I spent hundreds of dollars as a piss poor undergrad to go to that game and it was embarassing. Not to mention it’s likely the university would lose money like UCONN did last year. The only good thing about the entire trip was that Tempe has beautiful weather in December. I will forever hate all things Utah, Alex Smith, and Urban Meyer.

Comment by BCPITT 11.14.11 @ 5:59 pm

I was there too, and BCPITT’s assessment is dead-on. And Utah fans are complete a-holes also.

Comment by Presto Panther 11.14.11 @ 6:56 pm

Yes we are a morbid bunch Leaseman. 30 years and only one relevant season (2009) tends to do that to a fan base. I don’t count 2004 or whatever year the Fiesta Fiasco was because we ended up a lot higher ranked at #15 in 2009. Were we even ranked after the Utah beatdown,( ???)

No…. I’d prefer not to be the Poster Child of why the BigLeast shouldn’t have a BCS bid again.
Not with 5 losses and 7 wins. I see all the articles now, making fun of Pitt and the BigEast.

And that would also seem to lock Sunseri in for next year as well. So that’s two big negatives.
Which negative is worse I’ll let you judge.
And the BCS money is split equally among the conf. members, so that’s not an issue. Actually Pitt would get less since they would significant travel expenses. Plus we would get reamed again.

So thanks but no thanks.

Comment by EMel 11.14.11 @ 7:05 pm

That will all be a moot point anyway after the next game.

Comment by EMel 11.14.11 @ 7:09 pm

Could be a historic night in Pitt sports. When was the last time Pitt played at the Palestra, home of Philly’s Big 5 basketball? With conference realignment, Nov.25 could mark Pitt’s last visit to Morgantown for quite a while. Let’s see – which makes a better travel destination – Morgantown or Philadelphia? I’ll take my chances on Pitt basketball that night.

Comment by Tony77019 11.14.11 @ 8:23 pm

FWIW, I was at the Palestra in the early 80s for a Big 5 game to see Temple (Terrence Stansbury) vs St Joe’s (Maurice Martin) ..two all americans. That was also the time when everyone threw a streamer on the court after the 1st made basket … great experience

Comment by wbb 11.14.11 @ 10:06 pm

It is highly doubtful that we win two more and Cinci and Rutgers fall down, but I am not going to hope it doesn’t happen. So what if we get blown up in a BCS bowl. Sorry, but Sunseri still may be the best we have next year.

Do you think our players would rather go to Manhattan or the Tire or Beef bowl? They could still lose one of these.

The more practice days we get the better we will be next year. Emel and others, don’t fear the big time. We have nothing to lose, by getting lucky.

Comment by gc 11.15.11 @ 8:21 am

Hey gc, I’m all for it, if we get lucky enough. You know, if we would, that would mean we have won three in a row, right??

I also understand the other points. Getting pummeled on national tv isn’t so great either.

Money is a wash.

Personally, I would hope for the Pinstripe Bowl and NYC. Going there for New Years anyway. (with family, not Times Square, allthough everyone should go once).

Emel, pretty sure we’re doing Carolina around the holidays, will let you know for sure as it gets closer.

Comment by Dan 11.15.11 @ 10:47 am

Pitt at the Palestra. Excellent. That is excellent exposure for Pitt in our recruiting wars in and around Philly. We need to absolutely crush Penn and then all go to Smokey Joe’s and then Pat’s Steak House.

Provided Smokey Joe’s is still even there.

Comment by EMel 11.15.11 @ 11:06 am

The Holiday’s are almost here. Wow that was a fast year. We’ll have to play it by ear Dan-o. For I might be beckoned to Florida for the Holidays.

Are we talking about Turkey Day or Christmas season?

Comment by EMel 11.15.11 @ 11:09 am

Back to football: Pitt finally has a starting NFL QB. Check it out Tyler Palko will start for the KC Chiefs next week on Monday Night Football.

And then the following week against the Steelers on Sunday Night football.

Wow what a way to make an entrance. Good luck Tyler.

All things considered, if Pitt wins the remaining two regular season games, I would rather they go to a non-BCS bowl and win to finish an almost respectable 8-5 and have momentum heading into next year as opposed to losing (and possibly badly) a BCS bowl and finishing on a down-note with a far uglier 7-6 season.

Comment by pitt1972 11.15.11 @ 12:08 pm

@ pitt1972 ,,,,,right.
The only good thing coming out of a Pitt blowout loss in a BCS Bowl. Marinara Sauce Marinatto is the commissioner of a Non-AQ conference after PITT & the others leave. haha

Comment by EMel 11.15.11 @ 2:23 pm

…so some of you would rather see West Virginia or Cincinnati or Rutgers go to the Orange Bowl and Pitt go to the Beef O’Brady just because we might lose…I’m flabbergasted!!!

Comment by Leaseman 11.15.11 @ 3:01 pm

Leaseman–The best of all world’s would be 8-5 with a BE title and Orange Bowl victory.

However, wining a BCS Bowl with this team is virtually impossible. So, if the choice is between 7-6 with an Orange Bowl loss vs 8-5 with a Beef O’Brady win I will take the Beef O’Brady every time. Its simply better to finish 8-5 rather than 7-6 no matter how that is achieved.

Comment by pitt1972 11.15.11 @ 4:01 pm

I’m a big fan of the Beef O’Blimpy Bowl. Isn’t everyone !

Comment by EMel 11.15.11 @ 5:18 pm

the bcs game for the big east this year is against the acc winner I believe which will most likely be clemson. Clemson lost to ga tech and nearly wake forest so Pitt would have somewhat of a chance

Comment by pk 11.15.11 @ 5:43 pm

Not necessarily pk. It’s the BCS Bowl which has the last pick of BCS eligible teams. Which of course would be the BigLeast team, you would think.
But the clandestine way these Bowls operate amongst themselves, who knows.

Comment by EMel 11.16.11 @ 12:45 am

My cousin just sent this joke over…….

did you hear they’re moving the main campus from Happy valley?

yea…they’re moving it to Dubois…..as in DO – BOYS!!!

Mike McQueary to speak on CBS Evening News at 7!!!!!

Comment by EMel 11.16.11 @ 12:48 am

Guys, there is no shame or disgrace in being beaten by a better team, the disgace is in not wanting to compete against such a team for fear of losing!…

Comment by Leaseman 11.16.11 @ 12:23 pm

Enough already with the bowl talk, just beat the snot out of Mountaineers and let the rest of the cards fall where they may.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.16.11 @ 4:18 pm

Leaseman–Not looking at this so much as a shame or disgrace thing, although I won’t deny that’s a partial factor (8-5 looks a lot better than 7-6 to me). More importantly,IMO, a bowl win would give the players more confidence heading into spring practice and next season and, in addition, might well have a more positive impact on the closeout of recruiting heading into the February LOI day.
