LiveBlog: Maine-Pitt

My back is doing better, but it is still a little balky. Since I have to attend a wedding next week in Pittsburgh, I made a late decision to spend this weekend giving it a little rest so this doesn’t drag out any further. I feel guilty about it, but this is what happens when you start to get old.

On the bright side, I get to do the first liveblog of the new season. A little tricky with the game on ESPN3.com, but I’m going to make it work. I have the laptop to do the liveblog. The big screen will have a regular game on it, and the basement computer has been networked and is ready to stream the game.

In case you forget the rules. It’s a moderated chat, not a free-for-all or message board. Try to keep it on point. I won’t approve a dozen comments that all say the same thing after a good or bad play. That bogs things down.  Limit the personal vitriol. Some people will be have greater freedom than others based on past dealings and how they have handled things.

Things get underway at 1 pm.

As usual, if you need/want to break out the liveblog from the site, Click Here. Otherwise, it is just a little lower.

One thing I was looking forward to with Coach Graham coming in was the promise that “the best players would play”. Tino must sit down, he just isnt going to cut it. He seems like a good kid that works hard but so was Pat Bostick. Make the change now before its too late.

Lots of “high octane” nonsense….we need a nice easy going, calm kicker who doesn’t have the heebeejeebies when its his turn on the field.
In all seriousness Mr Toddy had better save a scholarship spot for a good kicker. Believe me, Ivy League ball has some great kickers, the MAC has some solid kickers….the cry is out for HELP!

The Hawkeyes are going to be really pissed off next week after losing to Iowa State.
This is an Iowa homegame and the black and gold fans will be out for blood. My fear is that the way Pitt has been playing, slow and very tentative we could suffer some major injuries in this game. Our players could really get pounded.
Make no mistake about it this was not a win against Maine….this was a disaster. I know, new coaches, new systems, new position players, etc…I understand that it takes time, however, we are playing like we are afraid to be on the field….and that’s when players can get really
banged up.

At least TG was right when he talked about the “Nitro Defense” – getting burned and torched!!

Too bad we have limited QBs with ability. None of our QBs fit our new system. The QB recruit from TN will probably start right away next year – he did well on the ESPN Elite 11 series and finished #5 of the top high school 20 QBs who came in for that contest. Tino is not a good passer – takes too long to get through his windup and ends up tossing too many “ducks”. Our O-line and many players on defense did not seem to be into the game. Not only did they seem unprepared, but they lacked much motivation.

I like Graham as a coach and will give him time. The Defensive coach however, has coached unimpressive defenses prior to coming to Pitt and worries the heck out of me.

Yes, Tino sucked today. He’ll probably suck some more in Iowa. And probably isn’t the guy for the system. BUT LETS THROW IN A FRESHMAN WALK ON! Imbeciles!

If you agree that Tino sucked, probably will suck again, and isn’t the right man for the job, who is the imbecile if you still don’t make a change? Sounds like you’re just another garden variety big mouth doofus afraid of change.

Everyone who loves Pitt football should wear black when preparing to watch the Iowa game next week, that way you’ll already be dressed for the funeral. IF we play like we did yesterday against Iowa, we are going to get our asses kicked good. Then we will have much more obvious evidence to ponder the question, where do we go from here? And we won’t have the excuse that at least we won the game. News Flash……..Iowa is a real college football team. Lets wake up and start playing football gentlemaen.

IF Pitt wins next week it will be due to a miricle transformation of player performance on both sides of the ball. What I can’t believe is that our players have been playing up to their potential over these first two games. Our offensive line is not as bad as it played yesterday, they just stunk out the place in their lack of pass coverage.

Tino can play better than he has, question is will he? I doubt it, once the competition gets tougher I feel he will go into the tank. Please Tino, prove me wrong!

I was worried about our secondary from the get go. That is now reality for all to see. What I can’t figure out is why our defensive front guys aren’t getting in there to “impact the quarterback”? That would be a really big help for our secondary guys, who need the help badly! We are not hurrying the QB or getting nearly the number of sacks that we should have gotten in these first two games, very worrisome.

A win next week will be a miricle!

For all the people bitching about the Oline/Tackles. if you rewatched that game and came to the conclusion that the problem was the line or more specifically the tackles not sure what top tell you. they are not the problem.

Dish, Trey Anderson’s abilities are a perfect fit for this offense – his balance of skills and system knowledge is what Graham wants back there and that’s why he’s at PITT. Don’t kid yourself into thinking Anderson was brought in for depth. He’s here because both Graham and dodge know the kid can execute this system very successfully and they wanted him to compete right away.

It’s game experience that gives Sunseri the edge coming out of camp and into the season and there is something to be said for that. He is a better mix of passing and mobility than either Gonzalez or Myers and that’s one reason he’s starting. But Graham is going to get Anderson playing time this season, possibly a lot of it and the reason is that Anderson is going to be either QB2 or QB1 in 2012 depending on how Sunseri plays this season, and that gives him an edge between himself and Voytik and IMO going into 2013.

IMO it’s Voytik that has to keep a weather eye on what’s shaping up at PITT, not the other way around.
