Missing Myles

The recruitment of shooting guard Myles Davis ended with an abrupt Twitter thud, last night.

“I would like to announce that I will be a Musketeer at Xavier University,” Davis tweeted late Monday night, also confirming the commitment to CBSSports.com in a text message.

The 6-foot-1 guard from Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) chose Xavier over Pittsburgh, Georgetown and West Virginia.

This was a surprise since Pitt had been recruiting Davis for some time and he is the coulsin of Pitt assistant Brandin Knight. Davis seemed to be highest on Pitt and Georgetown, so the choice of Xavier was a bit of a surprise.

Or maybe it isn’t.

“I just felt like it was the right place for me,” the Plainfield, N.J., native said late Monday. “I feel like I’m going to have a good chance of playing time with Tu Holloway leaving.”

Early playing time would be a big question mark at Pitt. Sure Ashton Gibbs will be gone next year, but Pitt has Durand Johnson, Isiah Epps and John Johnson all as possible guys to fill the role of Gibbs at shooting guard next season.

Davis is considered an excellent shooter, but right now that is the primary thing — hence why he is evaluated as being a 3-star caliber player. It isn’t a knock on him, it’s the same reason a guy like Ashton Gibbs slipped in recruiting rankings from his sophomore/junior years to his senior year. The rest of his game was not yet there.

Odds are, at best, Davis would have been a guy getting a few minutes as a freshman, but he would not have anywhere near a clear path to playing time at Pitt — or Georgetown.

Realistically this is the difference between a 3-4 star recruit and a 4-5 star recruit. The latter generally has the talent, better all-around game, and/or is so good at one thing that it will get him plenty of playing time and even starter minutes. The former, has to decide whether early playing time is more important than the particular program.

And frankly if Pitt is going to miss on a kid, better he goes to an A-10 school than a Big East rival.

Win some, lose some. That’s the name of the game. Congratulations to Xavier. Better that they caught that fish than the Bearcats, G’Town or that team in Morgantown. Rev. George in Columbus

He would have committed to Pitt if we wanted him. Dixon cooled on him and stopped giving him the love. Georgetown and WVU backed off him too.

Unfortunately we definitely missed on Calhoun and need to scramble to find a guard or wing for 2012

I think Myles Davis and Brandon Knight might know something the rest of us don’t. Pitt only has one scholarship left and if we get a big name in then Davis is out a scholarship. By going to Xavier he is guaranteed both playing time and a scholarship, no brainier for Davis.

my guess is just what he said. Wants to be an All American like Tu Holloway.

Same old story, nothing new here. Good program, good regular season team and disappointing come tourney time.
