Graham Understands Expectations

Todd Graham is down in Florida with Pitt’s contingent for Big East meetings. Not much for him to do other than talk to the media. He’s doing that.

Maybe it’s bravado. Maybe a touch of irrationality. I don’t know and I don’t care. Coach Todd Graham is not trying to lower expectations in his first year.

Pitt’s Todd Graham: “Our expectation is to win the Big East. Anything less than that & we’ll be disappointed.”

I choose to believe first that it is simply in his personality that he expects to win. To succeed at Pitt. The other part is that he does get that there are expectations. That the fans don’t want to have them tamped down. Especially not even before the first preview guides hit the newsstands. He knows what is expected, and he’s not going to pretend that it is unachievable.

It’s also got just a touch of wiggle room. Winning the Big East this year. Not going to the BCS Championship. Not running the table in the non-con. Winning the Big East.

Andy Staples has WVU at #20. I’m I missing something? What did they do last year to warrant a ranking?

Chas, what else could Coach possibly say? Some bad ideas:

“We’ll be competitive in the BE.”

“We’re gonna have a tough time adjusting to my no huddle system. By mid season we’ll be OK.”

“I didn’t inherit the type of players I need to play my type of ball. Give me a couple of years.”

___

None of these would make any sense at all given the current quality of BE football.

Pitt may be tested more in the non-conference than in the BE although, unlike Pittastic, I believe WVU should be the favorite. Don’t look past Louisville either altough most pick USF as another BE favorite.

Graham is a Winner and wvu has a coach in waiting

Chas, I see now why you don’t like posting about conference expansion. In one google search, you can find two articles, one says, won’t be for awhile, Big East in drivers seat with contract coming in two years. Other says, they want to move on it, so they will be set a year ahead of contract negotiations.

Oh, my point, both articles were from today or yesterday!!! ha ha

BigGuy, if memory serves, Ashton, Dante and Lamar all made the BE academic team as did JJ who recently transferred to Houston … also, one of the walk-ons.

On the other hand, UConn has more problems on top of the previous ones. However, Calhoun, like JoePa and Tressel has won championships and will call his own retirement (although this may help expedite it.)

Marco, Just hope Mark Myers, as rumored a few times on this site, decides to transfer. Hey, Russell Wilson, a lot of Pitt fans have thought for some time now (about 19 months to be exact) that you would look good in a Pitt uni.

CORRECTION: just hope Mark Myers, as rumored a few times on this site, decides ‘NOT’ to transfer

Comment by wbb 05.25.11 @ 7:29 am

Marco, because of the timing maybe bad grades? Just a guess.

Comment by steve 05.25.11 @ 7:31 am

I was wrong, not grades:

In comparing the academic rankings between Jamie’s teams and Calhoun’s UConn squads, I should have posted the following link:

I was suprised that Pitt’s football team didn’t fare better;

(From the link below) In the Big East, the Louisville football team was docked three scholarships because of its 908 score. The other six Big East football programs — West Virginia (962), UConn (953), USF (952), Pittsburgh (949), Syracuse (946) and Cincinnati (936) – were on solid academic footing.

Let’s see. If Gonzalez get dismissed from the team and should Myers transfer, maybe Todd Graham could go hat-in-hand, apologize to Kolby Gray and ask him to return.

Comment by BigGuy 05.25.11 @ 9:41 am

and sing on hands and knees “all my xs live in Texas, that’s why I live in Sewick-ley”

Comment by steve 05.25.11 @ 9:45 am

Maybe this clears the way for Myers. After Tino struggles to throw the ball over 15 yards MM steps in.

Comment by Coach Ditka 05.25.11 @ 9:56 am

NOW WHAT?? ANTHONY GONZALES THE BACK-UP QB BUSTED WITH MARIJUANA DRUGS LATE AT NIGHT WITH 2 BUDDIES (NON-FOOTBALL PLAYERS) MARK MYERS YOUR TIME HAS COME!!!!STOCL IN MYERS RISING AS STOCK IN GONZALES HEAD DOWN TO JUMP STREET!!!BOMBS AWAY IN PITTSBURGH, PA WITH STRONG-ARMED MARK MYERS

Comment by RandyRndyTime 05.25.11 @ 11:37 am

Look if Mark Myers transfers Other kids will see transfer opportunities to Pitt with Tinko Sunseri at QB So don’t worry be happy!

Comment by RandyRndyTime 05.25.11 @ 11:46 am

Arn’t we glad we didn’t get Dana Holgorsen now!!! Escorted from a Casino at 3:00 am by Cops for being Unruly and no doub’t drunk!!!West Virginia Hoopies

Comment by RandyRndyTime 05.25.11 @ 11:49 am

WVU will probably give Holgorsen a raise for fitting in with the locals…

Comment by Pantherman13 05.25.11 @ 11:59 am

At least he didn’t “walk into a door” or get drunk, fall down, and crack ribs on a coffee table. The level of tolerance at WVU for this sort of thing is VERY high.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 05.25.11 @ 12:10 pm

Pitt faces 3 teams in the (LOWER) top 25 – This is a perfect scenario – these teams are beatable & allows for a decent strenght of schedule !
