I’m rather cynical about most things. Especially when it comes to sports. Yet, I have to admit to being taken aback by the way Coach Wannstedt is acting.

Then Pitt’s administration tried to do the right thing by giving him a few days to decide if he wanted to coach the bowl game. As of today, he still has not given Steve Pederson his final decision. And the times I have talked to him over the past two weeks – the last time being Thursday – he said he was “going to work with the team, get them prepared, run practices and then wait to see where he is at and how he feels next week” before he makes his decision. Now, that is what he has said and that is what he is saying on the record.

Unfortunately, he has also told a number of people around him he is not likely to coach in the game and that he doesn’t want to go through a week of news conferences and luncheons and all of that “play happy” stuff. If it was just about the game, he would coach but all the other stuff he’s not sure he wants to go through.

I do know this – if he doesn’t coach, it will be defensive coordinator Phil Bennett who will be in charge and run things through the bowl. And while Hafley is gone and at least one more is likely to be gone shortly, for the most part the current assistants will coach through the bowl game.

I get that he is probably a bit bitter about the whole thing. I am sure he still feels blindsinded and never saw the firing coming. It’s seems obvious that he feels betrayed by AD Pederson, and this kind of putting off the decision is as much to get back at Pederson as anything else.

That said, I’m still surprised by the way he is acting since while it may be making Pederson look bad for not forcing the issue and contributing to killing ticket sales; it strikes me as being far, far crueler to the Pitt assistants and the players.

They are the ones stuck waiting to find out about preparation. They are the ones who don’t know who is leading the team. These are the people who are really being hung out to dry in this. I never would have expected Wannstedt to treat them as mere pawns in this.

It’s why no one knows whether Jason Hendricks and Mike Cruz will be suspended for the bowl game or not. Who is the one making that call?

It shouldn’t have come to this. AD Pederson had to hold Wannstedt to a timeframe to make the decision. And if he wouldn’t make it, then it is made for him. It makes no sense after the move to relieve him of his duties to then go soft on this part of things. I am having a hard time seeing how Pitt doesn’t come out and lay an egg in Birmingham with this mess.

Hey Scott,

I have a good one. How about Dan “I was waving my finger telling the world we were number 1 and then Penn State dropped 48 straight on us” Marino?

HbgFrank,

Yeah, because no one in the NFL ever enters with a history of drug abuse.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 7:47 am

It’s obvious from your posts that you’re a Penn State troll with nothing better to do than post on a Pitt fan blog. The use of your slanderous moniker only points to your jealousy of Marino choosing Pitt over your beloved Penn State.

Please go back under your bridge, troll.

Comment by TampaT 12.30.10 @ 8:46 am

Coach Haywood is getting it done.

“So far the Panthers have 10 players committed for the current class which will sign in early February, but that number is down from the 19 that had committed to the team before Haywood replaced Wannstedt.

Haywood said he expected to sign about 19 or 20 players but has been overwhelmed by the number of players who have reached out to him — who his staff either didn’t know or hadn’t planned on recruiting.

“We have a lot of players interested in us,” Haywood said. “Now we just need to figure out who fits what we are looking for athletically and academically. It seems like there isn’t enough hours in the day right now, but we’re off to a great start.”

Yeah, TampaT, we sure were jealous of Marino when we cost him his national championship in ’81 (remember 48-14??) and when we won it the next year. I sure Penn State fans were wishing they had Marino so they could have got blown out 48-14.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 9:14 am

Thanks for clearly identifying yourself as a Penn State troll. Now everyone here can take your comments for what they are worth – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Comment by TampaT 12.30.10 @ 9:38 am

Actually, I loved Rod Rutherford running down the middle for a 12-0 shutout the last time they played!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 10:17 am

Also Cocaine Dan, you guys ought to thinnk about getting a basketball club together, and starting a team!!! LMAO!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 10:18 am

You’re good at basketball, we’re good at volleyball. They are about equally interesting.

By the way, how many of the basketball players graduate?

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 10:34 am

Good comparison, one of the highest rated sports in the country, not to mention people going nuts for March Madness, and all the office polls that go along with it. Ya, comparable to volleyball!!! ha ha Good point!!!

FIRE STEVE PEDERSON NOW HE HAS THE PITT FOOTBALL PROGRAM IN SHAMBLES

Comment by Steve brain dead Pederson 12.30.10 @ 11:00 am

Ha ha ha LMAO what a friggin moron, you bumbling idiot. link to stanford.scout.com here are the basketball graduation rates for all schools.
That would be Pitt 75% Penn State 67% oh I’m cryin with laughter at my office.

Dude, first rule of trying to make an argument, do your fact checking first before calling someone out!!!!! Beau-tee-full!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 11:06 am

You must be too worried about being Iowa’s bitch to check on your facts!!! LMAO!!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 11:09 am

If that site is accurate, you must have had a couple of seniors on the bench that no one knew about. Look at past years, even the past 10. Sure not 75% then. Look at the football rates. Penn State, top 10. Pitt, not so good. And you would still be an average team in the MAC.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 11:13 am

Yes, Dan, just like you are WVU’s female dog. In fact, I just watched them the other night. They turned in the worst bowl performance of the year, losing badly to an awful NC State team. And that is the cream of the Big East. The same team that blew your doors off at home.

Join the MAC. Maybe you’ll be able to compete.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 11:15 am

………..and Iowa just knocked off a Top 15 team without half of their starting offense. Imagine what they would do to you guys.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 11:16 am

You have no credibility. You called out Pitt’s hoops graduation rates and got totally stuffed!!! “yabat, bu… but..10, 10…look at last, the last 10 years”. “yyyouu must hhhavee seniors on, on, on the bench, ya, that’s it”!!!

Now, be a good boy and go change JoePa depends!! You’re dismissed!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 11:21 am

I am still calling them out. Check the past 10 years, not just last year.

And it takes a lot of skill to make elderly jokes. I bet up to 5 years ago Paterno could have beat you in a 100 yard dash.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 11:35 am

I’m sorry, after getting totally ball busted on your call out, your credibility is lost, I can no longer argue with you. Good day, ha ha LMAO!!!

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 11:41 am

Bust me on the past 10 years. 75% last year means 3 out of 4 guys? I bet those three never left the bench. How about those guys that are getting you in the top 10? Are they graduating, too?

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 11:50 am

Hi Cocaine Dan!!!!

Comment by RAPIST AUSTIN SCOTT 12.30.10 @ 11:52 am

Ah, yes, Austin Scott. Charges were dropped. Want to hear the story. Scott had sex with the girl twice that night. The first time was with another person in the room. That person told police that it certainly was consentual. When the lady heard that, she changed her story, saying the first time was fine, but the second time he raped me. It was the second time the girl made an accusation like this. Like I said, case was dropped.

This, however, got him thrown off the team and cost him a pro career. At Pitt, when you throw a guy through a window, nothing happens.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 12:48 pm

Troll,
Scott sat out a year in high school, not because of an injury but because a drug search at his high school found drugs in his locker. This is not just rumor, but came directly from a coach and multiple Parkland students. This was the start of letting him get away with illegal behavior. PSU knew this when he was signed, yet still let him back on the team after his suspension for whatever it was Joe threw him off for the first (publicized) time.
Does a kid deserve a second chance to straighten out his life? Absolutely. Over and over? By the way, scott’s attitude stunk- me first, what team?
Oh, and as to graduation rate, when your bball players aren’t good enough to go pro they stick around for four years. That helps your graduation rate. However, no matter how good a fan’s team is, it doesn’t help them be a better person if they are an ignorant jerk.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 1:06 pm

Cocaine Dan, you seem to have an answer for just about everything!!! How bout the fine Mr. Pringle, along with, since 2002, 46 players with 163 criminal complaints. 45 resulting in guilty. 27 players plead guilty or were convicted.

Comment by PUBLIC MASTURBATOR STANLEY PRINGLE 12.30.10 @ 1:25 pm

GOOD POINT!!!!

Comment by ASSAULT AND BATTERY ANTHONY SCIOROTTO 12.30.10 @ 1:27 pm

Don’t forget, I got off easy!!!

Comment by BATTERY AND DOMESTIC JUSTIN KING 12.30.10 @ 1:28 pm

Yeah, most of them were underage drinking or peeing in public. Stop the presses. Scriotto’s girl was getting molested at a frat. He went and got his buddies. A fight broke out. Stop the presses.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 1:38 pm

Why did he need help?

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.30.10 @ 1:45 pm

You do have answers for everything. Sounds like a jail break up there, what’s goin’ on???

His girl was probably getting molested by the rapist!!! Oh, that’s right, you have inside info that he didn’t do anything!!! lol

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 2:02 pm

Hey pal, you outta quit, every school has problems with student athletes, Penn St. is no different than any other. Your basketball program is non existant, and I’ll give you the football may be ahead of Pitt’s, right now, I remember a couple of years ago you had losing seasons!!! You’re definitely mediocre in the Big Ten!!

Comment by MarkS 12.30.10 @ 2:16 pm

Mediocre? We won it two years ago. Mediocre in the Big 10 = Big East Champs. It does have to be a disappointing year for you guys, huh? Pre season top 15, talks of a national championship, etc. Now you’re in a bowl that no one has ever heard of and you can’t give away your 2000 ticket allotment. Pitt sure does have a loyal fan base.

Comment by Cocaine Dan Marino 12.30.10 @ 2:31 pm

Well, as you do with graduation rates, lets look at the last ten years, right????

00’….5-7….7th
01’….5-6….7th
02’….9-4….4th
03’….3-9….9th
04’….4-7….9th
05’….11-1…1st
06’….9-4….4th
07’….9-4….5th
08’….11-2…1st
09’….11-2…3rd
10’….7-5….6th

Totals 7.6 wins 4.6 losses avg place 5th

I don’t know, stinks of the definition of mediocre!!

Let me guess, you don’t count the losing or sub par seasons.

You’re preaching to the choir, %95 of us hate the Big East for football.

I must say, as bad as it is, the last time you played a Big East Pitt team, you got shut out?? 12-0 I know, that doesn’t count, it was 10 years ago, but go ahead and use 10 years for graduation rates.

All the crimes were misunderstanings, go back 10 years for this, not for that.

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 3:21 pm

Maybe it just upsets you, that Pitt has been to more Rose Bowls than Penn State???? Oh, ancient history right, whatever you need to fit your argument of the moment??? Sorry, I forgot!! LOL

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 4:20 pm

Maybe you’re mad the Pitt football program hasn’t been taken seriously for almost 30 years.

Comment by CDM 12.30.10 @ 6:40 pm

Hey, no one in the Big Twelve or SouthEastern conference takes Penn St. or the Big Ten seriously either. Actually, always have been a hoops fan first, so, I’m thrilled the past ten years!!!! No, not mad at football at all, we’ve been this way forever, so, mediocre football is no big deal, used to it.

I think what your problem is, you think that Penn St is part of some upper class with Texas, USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc. etc., when in reality, just another mediocre team.

Our difference is, I know my team is mediocre, you just haven’t come to terms with yours!! LOL

Comment by Dan 12.30.10 @ 7:43 pm

In case you didn’t notice, Texas and USC were awful this year. A down year. Just like Penn State.

Comment by hey Dan 12.30.10 @ 7:49 pm

Plus we’re playing on ABC on New Years Day against Florida. Is Florida upper class? The put us on ABC instead of ESPN. Know why? Penn Staters support their team.

Pitt has to play on Thursday or Friday nights for anyone to pay attention.

Comment by hey Dan 12.30.10 @ 7:53 pm

LSU took us seriously last year.

Comment by hey Dan 12.30.10 @ 7:54 pm

Get off the pitt board you nerds

Pathetic

Comment by DeVanzo 12.30.10 @ 8:25 pm

No, Penn State is just good ol’ mediocre. The sooner you come to terms with it, the better off you’ll be. Yes, they’ve had a lot more criminal charges than most the last 10 years, but, I have to admit, most teams have some.

Don’t forget John Ameche’, he certainly was a delicate flower in the Penn St. tradition! lol
