Bowl Challenge Reminder

What? You haven’t joined the Pitt Blather Bowl Challenge yet? The bowl games start tomorrow at 2 pm.

Need your incentive other than the joy of competing by predicting the outcome of all the bowl games?

Okay, time to announce the prize for the winner.

You will have a choice. I have one pair of the customized Pitt Nike Zoom Huarache training sneaker, courtesy of Nike. Here are some more pics from the Pro Combat day. I would have kept the pair for myself, because I did get to try a pair and they fit nicely. Unfortunately the pair they sent me is not my size. So if you win and want the sneaker option we will find out if you have the right sized foot for this.

(Odd aside, of the ten programs to get the Pro Combat treatment this fall, four of them — Pitt, Florida, Miami and WVU — have coaching turnover.)

Now the other prize option is a schwag/regifting collection. All of the items are new/unused. I’ve ended up with them, and it’s time to dump them share.

Among the items in this are:

— 8 GB jump drive in the form of Nike branded military dog tags

— Padded black Nike drawstring bag

— Jim Beam branded flask

— Brewzkey bottle opener

— Flying Dog branded pint glass

And I’m adding this t-shirt in size Large

There may be some other items added, but I have to look what is accumulated.

How can you not be fired up to play now? Register, here.

That shirt is way too nice to go with the rest of the stuff. I love recycled crap prizes! All the cousins have a real prize each year for the niece/nephew who gets the best “bag-o-crap” from the cheapskate uncle. With this haul, I could give my own bag-o-crap next year.

Hafley to Rutgers. Say goodbye to recruiting NJ.

Comment by J.P. 12.17.10 @ 7:47 pm

Yeah, except he has to recruit them to go to Rutgers.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 12.17.10 @ 7:54 pm

Tempted to pick Kentucky and leap all you guys on the slim chance we lose.

Comment by Krayz 12.17.10 @ 8:26 pm

What’s this confidence thing? Pffft, that’s no fun.

Comment by Krayz 12.17.10 @ 8:35 pm

if the pick with the most confidence isn’t oklahoma over uconn, the what is???

Comment by mike 12.17.10 @ 10:12 pm

If Haywood can bring back at least 2 of those lost verbals, I’ll consider that a victory…Jeff Hafley is gone…good! I don’t care how well he recruited, he could not teach a single member of the secondary that he coached to turn around when the ball was in the air. Enjoy the pass interference calls RU!

Comment by HbgFrank 12.17.10 @ 10:43 pm

Good point HbgFrank.

Comment by Dan 12.18.10 @ 3:08 am

Great point HbgFrank. Reed had done his best impression of Tom Cruise in ‘All The Right Moves’ this season…painful.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 12.18.10 @ 5:18 am

Hafley has a great smile and seemingly. a fine personality. He obviously recruited N.J. well. Smart move for Rutgers. However, his coaching of the defensive backs left much to be desired. I wish him well(except against Pitt). If his career is to go forward, he must learn how to coach. On the Haywood hire: I always rank coaches according to their progression. Judging from Michael’s season record of 2010 at Miami, the team made great strides and won the MAC championship as well. Why, the even defeated Temple and the “celebrated” Penn Stater, Al Golden en route. Golden’s team did NOT progress. So, from my perspective, the former Notre Damer deserves a chance before he too is thrown overboard by the infamous Pittsburgh media, Rev. George from Columbus, Ohio.

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 12.18.10 @ 9:34 am

I took the time to watch the first quarter of the MAC Championship game on ESPN3 (Friday Dec 3). I recommend it to all who have access. On the first offensive play for Miami, I looked at the formation and felt “more of the same for us is on the way”. True pro set. Handoff, off-tackle (which happend to bust for a long run). But then I saw a lot of different wrinkles that I rarely saw us use in the past. Misdirection hand off’s (Like UCONN toasted us with). A lot of WR slants over the middle to beat pressure on the QB. And my personal favorite: Fourth and goal from 2 feet out – two tightend jumbo set…nope, a full 5 wide spread, with one of the 5 being the tailback who motioned back into the backfield, took the handoff and easily made it into the endzone. On defense, lots of corners and safeties in run support. Corners playing tight coverage and in good position to play the ball. Plenty of pressure on the QB. On one nickle package, they blized two line backers and the nickle right up the middle. I think this system will be more fun to watch than what we have become used to seeing. I’m betting Haywood is planning to amp up his offense to utilize our skill players and put a more entertaining product on the field. Defensively, we will definitely bring more pressure against the run and the pass.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.18.10 @ 9:40 am

Haywood will be at the hoops game for a meet and greet before tipoff. I sure as heck hope this guy gets a ton of support and a great welcome from Pitt fans. He is our coach now, has done nothing wrong to Pitt fans, and wants us to win. It would be an absolute embarrassment for the University if Pitt fans did one of their typical moves and booed the new coach before he even starts. I bet quite a few Auburn fans have regretted harassing Chizik.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 12.18.10 @ 10:09 am

From the middle of MAC land, I guarantee two things about a Mike Haywood team that I’ve witnessed first hand:

1) His team will always line up and play it’s heart out. That alone encourages me because I haven’t seen that from Pitt for a LONG time…

2) As far as strategy, Haywood’s staff will always be right there. I’m not going to say they will be the best X & O guys in the land and will never be outplanned or out coached, but you will never see them looking lost or helpless. They are adaptable and make adjustments in game and between games. HbgFrank pointed out some great examples. Don’t be surpised to to see a tradition 30 runs off tack with little variety against a Maine – why? because it will win. But don’t be surprised to see a lot of 3,4, 5 wides and motion against a Rutgers or UCONN either…

the biggest question mark that will determine just how high Haywood can take this program is simply how well can he and his staff recruit… We won’t have a honest answer on that for a couple years. Based on what he did in the past, I like his chances…

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 12.18.10 @ 10:20 am

Incredible!! I can’t quite believe it, but neither can I deny it. I totally agree with Ron Cook on his plea for the Pitt negative fanbase to chill down. First time I’ve agreed with Mr. Cook for eons. Also, Mr. HobgFrank knows his football. He speaks like a coach. Perhaps he is one??? I also like the way Bowling Green Panther expresses Himself. Can’t wait to read what Wbb writes on the Pitt hire. I usually appreciate his imput. Rev. George

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 12.18.10 @ 11:52 am

Rev Geo …since you asked. I haven’t read Cook for years … decided that it was a total waste of my time a long while ago … but even he can he right once in a while.

Right or wrong, Wanny is gone, and it is time to move forward, and I agree that Haywood deserves a chance. Two things he brings to the table which will be welcome are (1) a no B.S. approach which appears to be badly needed since, to me, the biggest disappointment of this past season was the lack of discipline both on and off the field, and (2) the ability to adapt … he appears to be very willing to change his strategy based on his opponent and game situation.

While I, like many here, had my doubts about him because he was not the ‘sexy’ hire, I would not at all be surprised if he turns out to be Howlandesque (and not Callahanesque.)

Comment by wbb 12.18.10 @ 12:12 pm

I just want to say to all of you nay-sayers and negative bloggers about our new coach. Give the coach a chance. From what I have read he gets a strong, consistent level of execution out of his players. What has Pitt lacked during the Wanny years? The answer is strong, consistent execution. If he can do what he did at Miami with a basically bare cupboard of talent. He should do wonders with the talent Wanny left him. We all know that Wanny could recruit. So we have talent at the skill positions. If this coach and his staff can recruit some OL talent, we will be in great shape. OL talent should want to come to Pitt. They can play right away and Lewis and Graham are talented backs who can make the liuneman look like all-americans if they can hold their blocks for a brief second. What could be eeasier for an O-lineman? I had the same letdown as all of you after the hiring announcement. But the more I read about Haywood, the more I think we have a great future of contending foe BE Championships consistently while graduating guys of whome we alums can be proud. I know the jury is still out for all of you and myself included. But I am going to positively support our new coach until he prove me wrong. I will reserve judgement until I see what kind of team we have in 2011. I, for one, believe many of you will be pleasantly surprised. Remember, two years ago, the people at Miami of Ohio were saying what all of you are saying. Now, they are sad to see him go.

Kinda off topic but watched the PA AAA playoffs last night. Was interested to see how good Jameel Poteat, the 4 star commit currently wavering, looked. I’m no expert and it was only one game but I was unimpressed. Granted, McDevitt was committed to the pass, but to me, that makes Poteat even more suspect. The D was focused mainly on pass coverage so Poteat should have had ample running room. He looked very average. McDevitt’s QB is a stud, great arm, accurate and a great athlete, unfortunately he is only 6ft so he isn’t being recruited by many BCS programs. I think Poteat’s success is mainly due to his QB being so dominant. Anyways, dont be too concerned about losing him if he does commit elsewhere.

Haywood also brings a mature and cosmopolitan staff along with him. Our players will listen.

Comment by steve 12.18.10 @ 1:05 pm

anyone hear the rumor that maryland’s coach is potentially going to be fired and the top candidate to replace him is leach from texas tech? just great…we are being surrounded by the air raid offense (wvu and maryland)….wonder how this going to influence our recruiting base (if it does indeed happen). perhaps not much since pitt will have different recruiting philosophies on offense with haywood as our hc.

Tennessee must have played the game of their lives against Pitt last week because they just got upset again by Charlotte of all teams. They could not make a shot to save their lives and all the fancy passes went for naught. That is a good sign for Pitt. Much like the Steelers past, once teams play Pitt, they will feel it for a while.
I look at it this way, Pitt had an awful game and Tennessee played out of their minds! It happens.

I am in Maryland land and the rumors are rampant that the Fridge is gone….

Love our new coach Haywood and ask that we all get behind his efforts.

Bowling Green panther. I like what you have to say about the coaching aspect–sure hope it is a 100% accurate assessment!

I also agree that recruiting will be the key. However, I think we will have an answer on that score by this time next year not in two years, based on how he closses out the current class and how good the incoming 2012 commits look. If recruiting is the same or up from what Wannstadt did then the new guy will be a big success 9assuming you are correct on coaching)will be a flop in the long term. If somewhere in between those extremes the jury will be out for at least one additional year.

Find myself agreeing with HbgFrank’s assessment of Halfey. Guy could recruit NJ well, but that doesn’t mean Haywood can’t.

I don’t know why the perception here among some seems to be that Wannstedt’s coaches were the only ones capable of recruiting some of these areas.

As I’ve said in some other threads, some research into Haywood’s background and reading up on some interviews with people familiar with him reveals a coach who has made it a point to retain contacts he’s had with every area he’s coached at previously. He was recruiting kids from Texas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Virginia to Miami (OH). When I looked at the Miami (OH) roster, I was amazed at how many kids he pulled from those areas. He also made it point to hit the Cincinnati area hard, an area just as historically solid as the WPIAL.

Granted those kids he was pulling were MAC-caliber players for the most part, but isn’t that kind of expected anyway? He now has the selling point of a team in a BCS conference with much better facilities; I’m sure if he continues to hit those areas, he will bring higher-caliber players to Pitt.

The main things for me are the scheme and his ability to use talent within the scheme. He already said his offensive gameplans are built on identifying mismatches and exploiting them, and I’m not sure I ever heard Wannstedt say that over the six years he was here. To that end, I don’t care as much about the overall quality (read: ranking/rating) of the recruits as I do his ability to develop them and maximize their talents within his scheme. This is how Patterson wins at TCU and Peterson wins at Boise. This is how RichRod won at WVU. This is how Kelly also wins at Oregon (and with the help of a bunch of JUCO’s, too).

Rev, I’m not a coach…Just a guy whose wife and kid go to bed early on a Saturday night so I can watch a replay of a three week old football game! Really, I just watched it to see what formations were used on offense and defense, and like I said earlier, I liked what I saw. Hopefully, coach Haywood can implement the same system with the players we now have. One other thing, get ready to see a lot of long balls thrown on us because all that pressure does create a lot of one on one matchups for our DBs.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.18.10 @ 5:18 pm

An interesting note, Haywood won in ONLY his second year at Miami. As Miami was horrendous for a few years before he got there, that means he only had 2 recruiting classes of his players and he won the MAC. And most will tell you, a coaches first recruiting class usually isn’t that great, as he’s getting his feet on the ground. Meaning he also transformed the players he inherited from utter losers to winners and conference champions in 2 years.

Pitt is in nowhere as bad a shape as Miami was when Haywood first got there. If the current players ‘buy in’, they can reach their full potential as well. As far as the discipline stuff, a lot of these players go to private academies(think Dion Lewis & LeShean McCoy) and military schools for just that, to learn some discipline. It also makes you that much more of a better football player. Just watch Navy, Air Force & Army play, they usually don’t beat themselves. This could be a very good hire by SP & Pitt.

Comment by B 12.18.10 @ 5:58 pm

I’m undefeated! I’m going to win the bag-o-crap!

What do you mean it’s only the first two games, aren’t we supposed to jump to conclusions based on the slimmest of evidence on here?
