Haywood Announcement At 4

Pitt will be holding an press conference at 4 pm today to announce the hiring of Mike Haywood as Pitt’s next head coach in football.

I have said before that I am actually intrigued by the hire. I think Mike Haywood may turn out a lot better than the reactions from many.

I am not, however, enamored with how the process went. That has been an incredible turn-off. The actions have only reinforced the perception (or reality) that Pitt is not willing to spend the money to compete in 1-A football beyond a certain level of mediocrity (more on that later in a longer, more rambling post that I am trying to finish).

no one is saying haywood isn’t a good coach. the whole debate is whether he is the guy to get pitt to the next level. the debate is whether he is even an upgrade from wanny.

Comepletely agree….he’s gotta win right away, but I don’t see any reason he can’t.

half the people being super critical of this hire wouldn’t have been happy with any hire:
I can see it now…

Holgorsen “he’s never had any head coaching experience, he can’t run a program, he has no ties to the area, he’ll just leave if he’s successful….”

Golden “he’s record isn’t great, Temple improved because they moved to the MAC, his record vs. winning teams is awful, Haywood’s team crushed him in the championship we should’ve hired him…”

Kevin Sumlin “he went 5-7 this year how is this an improvement, he was lucky to have good cooridnator’s in the past, we should’ve just hired Holgerson”

Tom Bradley “he’s too old, not another defensive minded coach, he has zero head coaching experience, we don’t want him he’s from PSU…”

Austin “no HC experience, not another defensive minded coach, there is a reason nobody have hired him for an HC why should we be the first?….”

The point is every candidate had some very strong points on their resume and they all have holes or question marks as well…no matter what a lot of people would find a problem with any hire….I’m just happy its not Wanny anymore, because any coach that takes an ounce of responsibility and doesn’t baby his players is an improvement

I agree with several others, (hopefully) most, Mike Haywood is our new coach and we need to pull together and the support the man.

Let’s go Pitt ! Hail to Pitt !

It’s not like this is a job great coaches were beating down the door to get, it was going to be a gamble hire no matter what.

Its ridiculous that people are talking about his record or that he coached in the MAC. None of us interviewed the guy. Mike Tomlin won his coaching job in an interview in which he wowed the Rooneys. This is what Ive heard Haywood did as well. Tomlin’s hiring worked out pretty well if you ask me.

If there’s one thing about this guy, listening to him talks makes you want to go buckle your chin strap and play for him, a feeling I never got when I listened to Wanny talk.

In the Harrisburg paper, Ben Rothlisberger (sp?) stated that Haywood never reached out to him and, according to Ben, any succes at Miami is the direct result of the AD, not the football coach.
Given Ben’s issues with judgement, it sounds like a fantastic hire!!!!

what a piece of garbage, obviously if he doesn’t worship Ben’s ego he must not be the reason for success.

This hire is like Pederson’s hire of Bill Callahan at Nebraska. It will help us get rid of Pederson sooner.

Just 2 thoughts: The last disciplinarian coach was Paul Hackett. That didn’t work out well. Wannstedt’s success as a local recruiter was in large part due to his his likability and connection to the area.

When Haywood states he is looking for Freddy Kruger to play football at Pitt, how will that sell to recruits?

BlackMagic – read these news articles that were published this (Friday) morning…

It’s debatable which factored in the most – no doubt DW’s inability to win big games was very important to PITT… but there is no doubt that when DW lost control of the team that helped seal his fate.
