No, not the Panthers. I’m sure they are fine. Ready to kill New Hampshire, rip the wings off of flies, whatever.  I’m talking the fanbase for the home opener. Sold out season. All student tickets snatched. Now it is time to show up for the game, despite the construction and parking fubar.

Let’s run things down.

Chris Gates asks and several answer his weekly itchy questions (I really can’t call them burning, but they do irritate). He also has a Q&A with a New Hampshire beat writer.

This is New Hampshire’s big time.

The Wildcats have beaten bigger schools in places like Muncie, Huntington and Evansville. But this week it’s Pittsburgh, one of the great pigskin cities, and home to one of college football’s true big boys.

“This one is a different breed of cat we’re playing against,” University of New Hampshire Coach Sean McDonnell said.

Love my school. Love the history. Still dreaming big. But… Ah, hell, moving on.

Despite the poor throw that was intercepted in OT, the majority of Pitt fans seem fine with Tino Sunseri’s performance. So a couple pieces stressing Sunseri’s unwavering confidence.

“I don’t remember saying it, but I wouldn’t change it. I’d want the ball in my hands again,” Sunseri said. “It was just one of those things when you’re in the zone. (Teammates) feed off of that. People watch your body language.”

If Sunseri’s debut as a starter is to be considered stellar, it’s because of his performance in the fourth quarter. Sunseri completed 8 of 14 passes for 127 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown to Jon Baldwin, who saw his classmate’s confidence increase with every play.

“This was his first game as a starter, but we’re all held accountable,” said Baldwin, who finished with four receptions for 71 yards. “He had never been in an environment like that, at Utah. As the game progressed, he got a little more comfortable and started making more plays.”

No reason for him not to be confident. He played well overall and the general feeling is that Coach Wannstedt should have let him throw sooner in the game. Especially, play-action.

Q: Have any of the Pitt football team coaches ever heard of play action? Seems with the Utah team being so concerned about Lewis, when they were inside the 15 as time was running out, a play action pass would have been called for. Never once during that entire game did the offense run any play action.

ZEISE: This is sort of a strange question — this is a pro-style offense and play-action passing is one of the most important principles of offensive football to both the head coach and the offensive coordinator. The play action passing game is something the Panthers have done well in the past although you are right, it was noticeably absent against the Utes. I think we will see much more of it as the season rolls on.

You would hope.

I’m motivated to see this team put a beatdown on New Hampshire. We need a good beatdown to get people excited for Miami.

Unrelated note.

Anybody see the rivals committ list lately? They have the two guys who failed to qualify last year (K-M Smith and Andre Givins as committed) but what is really interesting is that Givens went from a 3-star running back to a 4-star defensive back. Forget about the stars because we can argue about their validity all day, it seems like we’re set at running back so if we can move this kid around the field it’ll be a big boost.

The score at halftime will be 17-10 Pitt, Pitt will hit a late touchdown to go up by 10 and the Final Score is Pitt 34 – NH 24

another nail biter for wanny.

I’m confident we’ll be in mop up duty in the 4th quarter. I think the team is going to look a lot sharper than some are expecting.

Comment by BnG 09.09.10 @ 3:24 pm

I think it’ll be a relatively high-scoring affair:

Pitt 37
NH 31

Any chance to see the game on tv in central PA?

Comment by Justin 09.09.10 @ 5:06 pm

Love that question about play action. It sure was mystifing not to see play action against Utah, especially since they called it on a Hail Mary pass last lear. One of my favorite Wanny moments. Ranks right up there with him calling time out to punt.

Dude, we went on the road against a perenial power and lost by 3 in overtime.

We’re at home against a 1AA team.

Much respect to New Hampshire for being a great program in the FCS, but we’re going to kick the (pardon my language) living shit out of them.

I would like them to go for the kill early. Don’t let this team hang around.

Comment by scoocher 09.09.10 @ 7:35 pm

the only reason I could think that there wasn’t much play action paases called would be that it would give Tino an immediate look at the defense as he is backing up to passa, especially sensible since Utah has been known to run a lot of blitzes

A while back someone on here mentioned a place for Pitt shirts in Whitehall… What was the name of the store???

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 09.09.10 @ 7:43 pm

man, to start this season with a loss really deflated all of my positive feelings for the season. Sorry to be a buzz kill – never liked starting with Utah on the road. Pitt really needed to keep people excited. On another note, I had dinner at the home of Penn State’s President last night in state college (business meeting) – so I had to ask him if PSU would ever let the PSU-Pitt game happen again. He gave me the old excuse that their schedule doesn’t give them many options. to which I reminded him that their schedule allows for Temple and Syracuse!

What gives anyone here reason to believe Pitt can blow out New Hampshire? In the last 5 years, how many teams have we blown out??? Look hard, there aren’t many. If we go up by 14, we are going to sit on the ball and run it into the line…we have a track record.

Is there any tv coverage of this game? The only thing I could find is http://www.espn3.com

Comment by Coach Ditka 09.10.10 @ 7:18 am

For you people who hold on to the day joepud is out at UPS that the series will resume, forget it. That ship sailed when ups found out they don’t need Pitt. In the begenning it was joepud’s revenge but thats not the main reason know.

When Wanny recruites players on defense does he look at players that have sucess against the wildcat or spread????

Comment by joel 09.10.10 @ 8:05 am

I’d like to see Pitt going away in the 4th quarter with a 3 TD lead for sure, BUT the Bowling Green game is still fresh in my memory banks. Looking at the injury report and considering how our linebackers played a step slow against the spread last week, anything could happen. Wannstedt better keep the pedal to the metal on offense because I feel if we have to play a couple of new guys at defensive end and in the secondary that our “D” might get exposed a little and who knows all of a sudden NH is in the game. I’d love to see Tino given a longer leash early in the game this week. Nothing would back off 8 or 9 NH defensive formation in the box than a successful passing game early, firing on all cylinders. This team needs a confidence builder right now. Hope Wanny lets the dogs out and produces one.

Nova to upgrade football to FBS?

Some times I hate this freaking city! I’ll be on suburban soccer fields coaching or watching my kids all afternoon, and it would be great to record the game and watch it when I get home. But in this city apparently nobody gives a sufficient enough of a crap about this team for there to be TV coverage of the game?! They play 12 freakin’ games a year, so to not televise even one is motherf@#$ing ridiculous.

Sorry for the venting. We win by 20, Dion Lewis runs for 140 yards, and Jonathan Baldwin actually gets a ball thrown to him in the end zone.

Comment by Carmen 09.10.10 @ 9:30 am

The Nova to FBS/Big East Football thing is a “finally!” moment for me. As many of us discussed this summer, this is just an obvious first step the Big East has to take in shaping its future.

Comment by maz. 09.10.10 @ 11:29 am

I am also glad to see that the Big East and Villanova are actively exploring the possibility of Villanova jumping to Div. 1A. My enthusiasm, however, is somewhat tempered by the realization that the only way this will work is if Villanova is willing to make the substantial financial commitment necessary to compete at this level. If they cannot make that commitment (and I’m skeptical that they can or will), this would be worse than the Temple situation a few years back.

Comment by Pantherman13 09.10.10 @ 11:37 am

I’m glad the Big East is takign a serious look at this but I really don’t see how Nova is a good choice.

Even if they build/play in a bigger stadium, I think they are going to havea a hard time filling it, I don’t think the alumni support is there.

Comment by BnG 09.10.10 @ 11:51 am

Didn’t we try an Philly school before…in Temple? Granted Villanova is a Western suburb of Philly, but still…not sure we aren’t trading one Temple for another.

What do you call 10+ wins per season, with two undefeated seasons and two BCS Bowl wins in the last 6 years (including one against the mighty Crimson Tied)?

I call that a power sir.

The comparison to Temple is interesting, although I’m not sure if them both being Philly schools is the most relevant similarity. Temple’s failure to succeed had as much or more to do with the school’s unwillingness/inability to adequately fund and support the program. I don’t have solid figures in front of me, but my memory is that their spending on football lagged far behind the other Big East schools. The lack of an on-campus stadium (not unrelated to the lack of financial support) hurt as well, because not even students were willing to make the trip to South Philly to see a losing team.

Villanova probably will have these same issues. The alumni base is smaller than Temple, and the student body is smaller. Without an on-campus stadium, it is hard to imagine large numbers making the trek from the western suburbs (a much more difficult trip than from North Philly) to a stadium to be named later.

Would Philly support a winning college football team? In the long run, I think the city would, but Villanova would have to be willing to put up the bucks to become “Philly’s team”. I’m skeptical that they have the resources to do that.

Comment by Pantherman13 09.10.10 @ 1:27 pm

Should be 59-0. This is what it SHOULD be if we played like a OSU, PSU, whoever. Due to our history, it will be more like a 35-14 W.

Carmen – Dion needs to put up 200 against this opponent and Baldwin needs 100+.

A W none the less.

Hail to Pitt

Pitt better be very careful tomorrow! Can somebody ask Wanny to play golf tomorrow afternoon…please.

Comment by Dan 72 09.10.10 @ 8:42 pm

I’m a Pitt alumnus and fan who grew up in Philly and was a Nova fan as a kid. The Philadelphia experiement was a bad one with Temple, and Temple had more alumni and money to put behind the program than Nova (partly due to big alum Bill Cosby). Philly is more of a pro sports town and they have numerous area colleges so it’s difficult to find any college team that would pack a stadium larger than 20,000 seats, especially in the early struggling years. I bet the Big East would give Nova some BIG requirements to meet – which they will not be able to agree to. We’d be better off taking Temple back (and they are much better now) then going after Nova. My personal opinion is to go after programs that have a better chance of filling 40,000 seats with more money and alumni support, and with less of a pro town. I’d rather the BE go after Memphis or Central Florida than Nova or Temple. I often wonder if Boston College may be ready to come back after realizing their student athletes in every sport are traveling way too much.
