I’m not sure if ‘Cuse fans are even aware of that any longer. So much off the football field stuff. The basketball team gets humiliated. It’s hard to blame them. This has been crazy.

Mike Williams quitting was related to a pending suspension, but not academic as I speculated. It was about going to a casino Saturday night in explicit violation of what their coach had told the team. And they would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for the meddling trucker.

According to state police, Syracuse football players Torrey Ball, Antwon Bailey, Andrew Tiller and Williams were in a Ford SUV that was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. The accident took place at mile marker 259.1 of the Thruway in the town of Lenox. That’s 6.4 miles from the Verona exit and the Turning Stone Casino.

The crash was entirely the fault of the tractor-trailer driver, said state police Capt. James Land. Nathan Primrose, of Clyde, was driving a tractor trailer westbound on the Thruway when he came up behind the vehicle Tiller was driving.

The tractor trailer struck the Ford, forcing it off the road.

Tiller, the driver of the SUV, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Everyone else was luckily unhurt.

The rest of the players on the Syracuse team are closing ranks behind the coach at this point.

Syracuse players seemed uncomfortable during their media opportunity on Tuesday trying to express their feelings over the events of the last 48 hours. All the players requested for interviews came in together. Typically, they filter in one by one over a 30-minute window.

“We’re coming together as a team, man,” said receiver Donte Davis. “That’s what we do. We’re going to stick together and stay close. You always have tests here and there. We’re OK. We’re brothers out here. We’re going to stay together.”

“It’s a team issue thing,” said Syracuse offensive lineman Ryan Bartholomew. “We all have to understand we have team rules and we all have to abide by them.”

“Coach has rules and guidelines,” said Syracuse starting quarterback Greg Paulus. “Those are the things this team is going to do. Coach always talks about doing things together, doing things as a family. He sets the standard through his example. It’s a great example for us to follow. I know we’re going get this thing going. Playing hard for him and our teammates, that’s what we’re working towards.”

“We’re focused on Pittsburgh,” said snapper Dalton Phillips. “We have four games left. We have to win three. We can’t let these distractions get to us. We need to press forward.”

Well, if they are focused on the Pitt game let’s see what else there is.

Tiller was the starting guard on the Syracuse O-line. That suspension hurts as much as Mike Williams’ quitting in my view.

DE Jared Kimmel is out for the Orange as well with knee surgery. Couple that with the suspension of Torrey Ball — a reserve DE — and the depth for a ‘Cuse team that was already very thin is inching closer to non-existent. That front four could well be  worn down to nub by the end of the game.

Syracuse’s scholarship roster was down to 66 before the injury, suspensions and quitting players (including a JUCO that never actually played). So it could well be that the number would be around 60 dressed scholarship players for the Pitt game.

The Pitt players and coaches swear they are laser-like focused on the game.

“We can’t overlook this team,” said senior tight end Dorin Dickerson, who leads the Big East with nine touchdown receptions. “They have nothing to lose. They are going to go out and hit people and try to win the game.”

Whether it’s coincidence or not, Pitt has tended to struggle the week prior to its biggest games of the year. In each of the past three seasons Pitt lost the game it played immediately before meeting rival West Virginia, falling to Connecticut in 2006, Rutgers in 2007 and Cincinnati in 2008. Pitt also lost the week before what was arguably last year’s second-biggest game (Notre Dame), losing to Rutgers.

But with Pitt off to its best start since 1982, the players understand a loss to Syracuse would diminish the importance of those same games they were tempted to look ahead to.

“We didn’t look past (any) team we played this year,” fullback Henry Hynoski said. “We focused on what we had to do at that time. If we didn’t do it all year, there’s no reason why we should do it now.”

Okay, then.

Meanwhile,  I guess I’ll peak ahead a bit.

The Pitt-Notre Dame game Nov. 14 is on the short list of games being considered for ESPN’s “College GameDay.” If chosen, the GameDay crew would do the show from Heinz Field.

Nothing like everything coming full circle.

Cuse is falling apart at the seems. Its really important that Pitt demolishes them to regain some of the lost momentum from the bye week. Where would GameDay do the show? From Heinz Field or the Peterson?

heinz field ?… when i was in school.. they did from heinz field when we played vatech.

Comment by Snala the Panther 11.04.09 @ 4:31 pm

Heinz Field! Or was that question sarcasm, Chris? Probably from the open end of the stadium, outside of the stadium, with the city skyline in the background, where they did it in the past.

Comment by dugdog 11.04.09 @ 4:36 pm

The highlight for me the last time they were here was the “Cleveland Steamer for Beamer” sign that a Pitt fan got on ESPN …

Comment by Chuck Morris 11.04.09 @ 5:07 pm

I realize no one wants to think too much about it, but the last time GameDay was at Pitt/Heinz Field was the Wannstedt/Weis debut to start 2005. Hence the comment about “full circle.”

Comment by Chas 11.04.09 @ 5:19 pm

darius walker is still running…

Comment by wilk 11.04.09 @ 5:24 pm

I would be surprised if Pitt was not the GameDay site…any chance to get Notre Dame on TV ESPN will take it and I don’t think ESPN has had a Big East team on since the Pitt/ND Wannstedt/Weis debut. You would think Pitt/Cinn would be a better game to have Gameday but no doubt they’ll be at SEC Championship that day.

I thought Zeise’s answers today in the P-G Q&A were very interesting … esecially Questions 1 and 3.

link to post-gazette.com

1. Note that even when Pitt was a Top 10 team annually (late 70s early 80s) they never averaged more than 50,000 at Pitt Stadium

3. Aside the QB, the big question mark for next year is the O-line … otherwise, there is plenty of talent returning for next year.

utah tcu is that day too. as well as osu iowa

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 11.04.09 @ 6:18 pm

here is an excerpt from today’s Trib notebook about Pitt:

Pitt recruit T.J. Peeler, a running back from Broad Run High School in northern Virginia, was penalized twice for unsportsmanlike conduct last Friday night, drawing an ejection and a one-game suspension that will be served during his team’s playoff semifinal Nov. 20. Both penalties were for bumping chests with a teammate.

rules are rules, and he should have known better after having been penalized the first time. However, the reason I posted this is to contrast this to the decision to suspend the UF player for half a game aginst botton feeder Vanderbilt for eye gouging …. amazing!

I love the way Gator fans are defending this decision on the blogs … could you even imagine their reaction if the Great Tebow was the recipient of such a heious act?

Comment by wbb 11.04.09 @ 6:23 pm

15 yards and an ejection for chest bumping his own teammates?

Glad I never played high school football in Virginia.

Wanny and Chubbie Charlie truly have come full circle. CC had the typical 1st season ND meteoric rise to the top of the football world, but now, is an Urban Meyer interest away from being let go; while Wanny had a rather tumultuous first three years, and hopefully has turned the corner, adding more supporters daily, and has job security through and through. Both were Pro Guys coming to the college game (although Wanny coached and played); both coming back to their alma maters, both were high profile and ranked to start the season.

What most people are now realizing: Wanny inherited a mediocre (at best) team. Don’t give me a BCS showing from the year before as an indicator of talent, our 2005 team was a mediocre squad at best. We were small, slow, and thin at most positions. And as Wanny revealed in his latest interview with Rivals, stayed loyal to these kids (mostly Sophs) as a measure of principles…

Chubbie Charlie, on the other hand, inherited a three year starter quarterback and the most tenured offensive line in ND history, rode them for two years, got the big contract extension by the Domers, and never developed a player from that point on– bumbling around a 4 to 7 win team at best. To this day, his best wins were the opener versus us and two losses to USC.

Chas is right, major full circle on this game.

I would love to see Wanny rewarded for his effort and humility.

I recall them having Gameday in front of Heinz Field back in 05. There was a guy with a giant Wannstedt head in the background.

Basketball gameday was at the Pete a couple of years ago. That one was inside.

check the back-to-back stories on B Bennette’s BE blog on ESPN .. the 1st one about BE’s attendance followed by the story on Shanahan:

note that Pitt has the lowest % of capacity .. (and amplified by the tacky yellow seats which really stand out)

Seems like Dion “Skip” Lewis is about to be on ESPN2, college football live

Comment by Steve 11.04.09 @ 8:20 pm

“He’s a special kid” plus it’s great that he’s so articulate.

Comment by Steve 11.04.09 @ 8:23 pm

I saw that ESPN2. Awesome that Dion got some love and Pitt was featured like that.

Comment by Panthoor 11.04.09 @ 8:25 pm

More on Skip: He’s so shifty like his idol, Barry Sanders

Comment by Steve 11.04.09 @ 8:29 pm

Gameday was already at OSU this year and also did a TCU game at BYU..I doubt Gameday would do two games from that conference in one year.

Comment by Section 110 11.04.09 @ 9:13 pm

Yep, Gameday would be at Heinz Field on the lawn near Bettis Grill. That’s where it was last time as Kirk Herbstreit got heckled

Comment by MelbaPlace 11.04.09 @ 11:10 pm

Well, Herbstreit was right when he correctly picked slight underdog ND in that game … knowing full well that their experienced O-line were lining up against a d-line that had a 2-star freshman lineman (Mustakas) who had to be thrown in well before hew was ready.

I’m wondering instead if Gameday will be here on 12/5 if Pitt & Cincy win throughout. It’s a longshot, especially since I believe UF plays Bama for the SEC championship, not to mention the B12 title game .. come to think of it, what am I’m thinking.

Comment by wbb 11.05.09 @ 8:53 am

Gameday doesnt usually travel on “Championship saturday”

Comment by Jamie H 11.05.09 @ 10:08 am

This game Saturday is the exact kind a previous Pitt team would lose – one that there is no way they should lose.

Not going to happen this season. This team seems focused, has too much talent, and had a week off to prepare. Losing this game would be an embarrassment to Wanny and the program.

Comment by Greg 11.05.09 @ 10:33 am

Greg, note that this was the same thing being said about the USF game

However, the last 3 games this year were the type of games that Walt always lost …and usually by a bigger score.

Comment by wbb 11.05.09 @ 12:33 pm

You can make the argument that both Walt and Wanny lost games in mind numbing fashion. I can also argue that both had inexplicable wins that left us even more perplexed as fans. The difference, we are now seeing, is the talent level that we have now is FAR better with Wanny…and…the success of the “middle-of-the-road” teams from the “old” Big East has been –for the most part– better (read:less favorable to Pitt) during the Wanny era. Basically, Walt did more with less (as a whole) than Wanny.

This game, however, is the type of game either coach should and would/wil have won… a game we have absolutely no business losing. We can argue whether or not we should ever lose to a MAC team, a road mediocre BCS team, or to a rival during a down year….all of which Wanny & Walt have done…but to a conference team in complete disarray or completely attrocious on both sides of the field and with our team humming on nearly all cylinders is NEVER acceptable. NEVER. EVER. NEVER. (Yes, I said NEVER)….

Comment by Pauly P 11.05.09 @ 1:39 pm

If I was running Gameday, I would pick Pitt-WVU but since I am not….

Let’s see – Pitt vs. Cincy or ND and some other team. I am going with ND.

Comment by Yeti 11.05.09 @ 2:22 pm

Last year Gameday was SEC Championship game..before that at the Big 12 Championship.
