Sick of QB Questions

The beat writers have spoken. Both Kevin Gorman and Paul Zeise have blogged that they are done with the whole QB issue. The matter is settled until after the season has begun and the whole thing is moot.

First, Gorman:

Are you going to bench a fifth-year senior quarterback with a 9-4 record in 13 career starts in favor of a redshirt freshman who has never taken a snap in a college game after eight days of training camp?

The answer is a resounding no.

So, before we begin the recap of Pitt’s first controlled scrimmage, let us end the outrage over Wannstedt’s insistence Tuesday that Bill Stull remains the starting quarterback. Stull has struggled. Tino Sunseri has shined. Pat Bostick has been steady, solid if unspectacular.

What is Wannstedt supposed to do? Pitt fans would like to hear Wannstedt announce that he is opening the quarterback job up for competition. They would like to hear him say, “Let the best man win.”

Don’t hold your breath.

What Wannstedt is doing is standing by his starting quarterback publicly, despite Stull’s unimpressive play in camp so far. It says here that Wannstedt should be applauded. Now is the time to build confidence in your quarterback. The season opener is less than two weeks away.

The message has been served. Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. has made it clear in the quarterback room that there is open competition. Stull knows this, as do Bostick and Sunseri. It’s as simple as this: perform and play, struggle and sit. But training camp is not the time to, as Cignetti likes to say, make such decisive decisions.

Come September, it’s a different story.

Perform and play. Struggle and sit. Win or lose.

And Zeise:

The only comments I will make is this — Pitt did indeed win eight games (Pat Bostick started the Notre Dame game) with Stull at quarterback and the only of their four losses you could pin on him was the Oregon State loss. Two of the other three losses (Bowling Green – way too conservative early – and Rutgers – a really bad defensive game plan) probably fall more on the coaches shoulders than anything else and it was Cincinnati’s year and they seemed to get every bounce in that game.

Now, Stull wasn’t great in those losses but he wasn’t the reason they lost, either. There is no question that the Panthers can win with him at quarterback, particularly if he improves some from where he was at in the second half of last year.

But like I said, when the head coach says “this guy is our starter”, that’s good enough for me to move forward. I would assume that Bostick will be the back-up because I have a hard time believing that they would throw a redshirt freshman to the wolves in the middle of a game or halfway through the season if the starter is gets hurt.

So with the quarterback position settled (at least in the mind of the only person whose voice matters…..), here 10 other observations/analysis from today’s scrimmage……

I guess they both have gotten a little tired of the e-mails and questions about it as well. From their perspective, it must be a little tiring. It’s the one aspect they get asked about. I’m guessing they are getting a fair amount of outraged and frustrated responses to their reports and answers they give. They don’t get to make the decisions, but their job is to report on the Pitt team. Instead they are repeatedly answering the same questions about the same spot. Something they have no control over, no influence and it certainly must put a strain on their dealings with players and coaches if they are continually focusing stories and posts on that one portion.

Plus, it must get a bit tiresome.

Stull will be the starter when the season starts. They are acknowleding, at least, that if he still can’t get to a point of mediocrity in the season then things likely will change. Even with Coach Wannstedt having the final say.

You have to love the attitude, “well stull didnt really lose us any games” !!!! What! Is that how you evaluate a position? My guess is Stull’s inability to perform or an injury will eventually land him on the bench but any chance Wanny lets Tino get a sniff of the turf? probably not.

The beat writers have lowered their ears and put their tails between their legs now that King Wanny has spoken. At least have some guts Paul and stick with what you said 24 hours ago…not this bs “whatever coach says is good enough for me!”

Comment by Rich 08.19.09 @ 9:49 am

I know, I know, I know the company line is ‘we can’t use a redshirt freshman at that position he has no experience and well, you have to remember last year was our starters first year as a starter…….” My first reaction to the “it was his first year as a starter” line is this — please remind me how many starts Tony Pike had before last season and how that turned out for Cincinnati. And Darryl Clark, how many times did he start prior to last season and how did that turn out for Penn State? Heck for that matter, USC’s Mark Sanchez had three career starts before last season and well, he did OK I think.

College football teams all across the country use young players at key positions all the time and win with them. It is a fact of life in college football, rosters turn over every year and some years significantly. The idea that you always must have an experienced player at every position to win is ridiculous. Yes, ideally you’d like to but if the best player isn’t a senior, well, you need to look elsewhere.

And frankly, if you have an entire training camp plus the added bonus of three mulligans (to use another golf reference) to start the season (i.e teams you should be able to physically overmatch and thus win while protecting the quarterback and helping him gain confidence and get his feet wet and get used to the flow of the game) – that’s seven weeks of work you could have to get a guy ready before the varsity games start. But the key is getting him as many reps as possible and well, you’ve now wasted an entire week.

AMEN! Wanny is clueless.

Just the thought that I have to endure another year of Bill Stull as QB is enough to make me want to pitch my season tix, if they ever get delivered to the far province that is Jeannette, PA. ( sidenote, T. Pryor made the best move of his life rejecting Pitt, imagine him as a benchwarmer here) Pitt will most definitely lose some games they should have won if Stull plays. The earliest Pitt QBs that I saw play were Dave Havern and John Hogan. I defy anybody out there to name me a worse starter than Stull. Inaccurate arm, not strong with a slow release. Too slow to duck the rush or scramble. He can throw the 35 yard flutter ball up there for grabs. This year, there is no Shady. So Pitt may have to at rare moments attempt to score an offensive touchdown through the air. We all know that defense wins championships, etc, etc, etc. But sometimes you have to be able to score 28 points. I look for losses to Buffalo & NC State

Comment by Kid Robbie 08.19.09 @ 10:20 am

I really can’t believe they would not use Bostick. Wanny has forgot more about football than I will ever know but this makes no sense.

Comment by Pitt79 08.19.09 @ 10:26 am

I can see it now: the coaching staff will wait until Stull has another really terrible game, ala the Sun Bowl, then their hand will be forced, and either Bostick or Sunseri will get thrown in there having gotten maybe 10-20% of the reps in practice in each previous week.

I love this coaching staff.

We all need a break from this madness. So let’s move on to what Chris Dokish reports on the Pitt Panthers’ defining sport:

Just food for thought–Would you be pleased with either of the following two alternative scenarios–

1. Stull is starter–Pitt wins early season OOC games due to superior talent and mistake free football but loses several later more important games due to Stull’s skills deficiencies.

OR

2. Sunseri is starter, Pitt loses an early OOC game or two due to mistakes as a result of Sunseri’s lack of game experience.

Isn’t that how Cignetti and Wannstadt probably currently view the alternatives?

Perhaps the best solution to that dilemma and what we should probably hope and pray for is that Stull is gradually phased out in favor of Sunseri as Sunseri gains needed practice and game experience. In fact, perhaps, that is exactly what is being privately debated by the coaches.

Comment by pitt1972 08.19.09 @ 10:50 am

Tino doesn’t have a losing bone in his body.

Comment by steve 08.19.09 @ 10:54 am

The analysis of Bill Stull should be that he was blessed with Pitt’s best running back in 30 years and even with that type of running threat Stull could not throw a pass to save his life and couldn’t even win a lower tier bowl game. How is he going to have any success throwing the ball this year without McCoy in the backfield?

Comment by PantherG 08.19.09 @ 11:09 am

The issue I have is that I think Wanny owes Bostick more than he does Stull.

Stull is in his 5th year with a one-year redshirt, and started the entire year less the one game. He was indeed doing well until injured but never came back to that level. That’s the issue … by now, he should be ahead of where he was or at least the same, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Conversely, Bostick had to be thrown into the fire when he clearly wasn’t ready, never redshirted, is allegedly a hard wotker and good srudent of the game, and is now not getting equal snaps … although it may well be that this will be his redshirt season unless injuries dictate otherwise.

My guess is that Wanny’s plan is that Stull is his starter with Tino back-up,and he’s sticking to it …. unfortunately a QB change may only come due to an injury or a needless loss to an unworthy opponent.

Comment by w Bill 08.19.09 @ 11:23 am

Christ, WannY! I haven’t seen someone getting stroked and treated like a baby more than Stull….okay, maybe Brady Quinn in Cleveland, but geez… I agree with all you guys, the college game is different. QBs can turn the corner after a couple live games. Sanchez did after he dropped the terd to OSU last year, and he ended up rolling State Penn…

Wanny coaches the QBs like the Pros…so let’s think like that for a moment…The NFL Atlanta Falcons can throw Matt Ryan out in week one…there’s an example. Cutler too. I’m just not getting it. Why is so scared of throwing in Sunseri versus YSU and Buffalo. He may lose at NC State, but I guarantee he will turn the corner in that game. I keep coming back to Palko. He struggled in his first couple starts…Walt sat him on a couple of series to calm him down in those games, and put him back in. By the end of the Nebraska game, he turned the corner and officially “got it”. By midseason, noone remembered how many starts he had or lacked or etc.

Play the BEST DAMN QB, PERIOD!

Comment by Pauly P 08.19.09 @ 12:29 pm

i understand starting stull, i just hope the staff doesn’t keep him there too long if he is struggling. But my guess (noted in another thread) is stull will lose his job by the 3rd game if he isn’t performing, and tino will get some reps during youngstown and bufallo.

But if i see a d-1 quaterback consistently throw off his back foot that much.. i will run down on the field and take him out.

Comment by Snala the Panther 08.19.09 @ 12:42 pm

Dodd has NC State’s QB as preseason player of the year in ACC– ironically enough, a Redshirt Soph that entered the starting roll (as a RS Frosh) mid season and proceeded to throw 17 TDs and 1 INT in 4 straight wins to take the Wolfpack to a Bowl Game. Maybe Wanny should take a lesson…

I’m officially no longer excited for the season. The guy whos playing better will be on the bench. We’ll see the same frustrating games week after week that we saw last year instead of a complete football team. DW is a moron.

Comment by Dan35 08.19.09 @ 1:04 pm

As much as I would have loved to see T. Pryor or Paul Jones play for Pitt, I cant find it in me to criticize their decision to go elsewhere. There is no doubt in my mind that Pryor would not have seen the field yet at Pitt. How bout Greg Cross not even seeing a little bit of time in some formation last year. Waste of talent. Now you got two of the most highly recruited quarterbacks in the country (pryor and jones) right in your backyard, a position in which Pitt is desperate, and they cant land either. What makes me even angrier is DW’s arrogance talking about the situation. I would love to see the pictures Stull must have of DW.

Comment by Z-boy 08.19.09 @ 1:07 pm

Does anyone else think these writers are being giant babies? I don’t like writing about QB controversies, WAAH. So you job sucks for like 10 days, even though your job is to watch and write about football. We all have bad days at the job, but you don’t see me whining about it in print (Company XYZ is giving me a job I don’t like). These guys need toi suck it up and continue to write about the QB controversy. Shut up and do your job.

Comment by Wannstache 08.19.09 @ 1:35 pm

I seriously doubt that Gorman and Zeise have given up writing about the Pitt QB situation, but wouldn’t doubt one bit that they are tired answering questions about it … especially since no matter what they see in practice or what opinion they may have, it simply will not matter.

Comment by w Bill 08.19.09 @ 1:51 pm

Taking a step back to look at the bigger picture…it looks like the Big East just took a significant blow in terms of its bowl lineup. Apparently, the Sun Bowl is now out of the picture:

link to www2.tbo.com

The Sun Bowl will drop the Big East #3 in favor of the ACC #5 starting next year. I’m not sure what other opportunities are out there, but with all of the talk about upgrading the bowl lineup, all that has happened so far is that the Gator/Sun pairing has been replaced by the Champs Sports.

Comment by Pantherman13 08.19.09 @ 2:00 pm

the reason for this is much of the reason that the BE will probably always struggle to be a viable fb conference. Like Pitt, many other BE teams do not get the following at bowl games that schools from other conference do …. WVU being an exception. The ACC has the advantage of bigger schools in areas not populated with professional teams, plus they have much less traveling distance to many of the bowl sites.

Comment by w Bill 08.19.09 @ 2:27 pm

Doesn’t it sound like the same sad song every August? I have memorized the lyrics and everything. Could be worse though, we could be blinded by the arrival of great conqueror, Greg Paulus.

I am still very optimistic about this season though. The last thing I want to do is shat on my quarterback, whoever he is, with only weeks to go before we drink bile again. But, I can’t blame people for being confused or disappointed. Stull would be a backup at best at several schools, perhaps even ones that employ happy citrus. I think I rather complain about the OL.

I point to the sky and say “We win 10 games this season” Take this optimism and throw it 47 yards to Baldwin for 6!

Comment by Panthoor 08.19.09 @ 2:33 pm

I definitely agree with Wannatache (poster above, not the actual one)- the beat writers have no right to bitch. This is the biggest story surrounding this team, which they both contributed to, and now they’ve decided to let it go? This story is only going to get bigger and more heated as time goes by

Comment by Dan35 08.19.09 @ 2:40 pm

Stull never really helped win any of those games either, right?

There’s a reason everyone’s a’holes were puckered up inside of their stomachs every time Stull dropped back to pass last year. That kid threw more 20 yard ducks than a hunter.

As for not playing in the Notre Dame game last year? Does ANYONE think ole Steady-Hand-Stull would’ve stepped up at the famed sacred Irish ground?…please.

Kid Robbie, you’re right on with Pryor. Why come to Pitt when decisions are made with a cloud of mystery along with a three ring circus? Same goes for the ULTIMATE reason McCoy left. Yes, he made a good decision to capitalize on his skills, but it was a no-brainer to the people around him because Pitt’s half-assed decisions were ONLY going to hurt from here on out; never help. Can anyone honestly say that the voices in McCoy’s ears weren’t predicting this very pandemonium right now?!

snce it appears that we are in dire need of soemthing positive, the following is from today’s Q&A from Paul Zeise in Post-Gazette:

Q: I only know what I read, and if I am correct it sounds like our offense, especially the line, is really struggling against a talented and deep defensive front. Isn’t this what D.W. really wanted when he came here?

B N, Ebensburg, Pa.

ZEISE: Yes, and he has said several times since the start of camp — he has never been on a good team that didn’t have the defense dominate the offense early in camp. I know we talk about him as a recruiter a lot but I don’t think you can fully appreciate how well he’s recruited athletes until you see this team up close like I do every day. I’ve said it before, top to bottom, this is the best-looking team, in terms of overall depth, athleticism, size, speed, that I’ve covered and I’ve been on the beat since 2002. That 2002 team had some stars — like Rod Rutherford, Larry Fitzgerald, Kris Wilson — but it wasn’t deep and the lines didn’t look anything like these lines. This team looks like a Division I team is supposed to — of course, soon we will find out if they can play

Comment by w Bill 08.19.09 @ 3:45 pm

A measure of the irrelevancy of the Big East (fb) in general and Pitt in particular: ESPN just reported on three QB competitions going on now and made no mention of the Pitt situation.

They mentioned Michigan, Tenn and one other program.

This team has a great defense this year, it will be a pity if we have to waste it because of poor QB play!

[…] thing, in reference to my prior posts about the end of the QB controversy — at least as far as the beat writers are concerned. They aren’t going to stop covering […]

It must be football season again at Pitt. I feel this horrible need to start drinking now and not stop until season’s end. I cannot for the life of me understand WHY Wanny would proclaim Stull the starter now….but then again, when have any of us understood much of what Wanny does!

Comment by Dan 72 08.19.09 @ 5:34 pm

Steve I don’t think thats a signal of irrelevancy of the Big East. It’s the fact that Wanny says its not a competition so why would ESPN waste time covering it.
Also, all of the comments of Pryor being better off at OhioSt I think are off. You guys are right he wouldn’t be playing QB for us. TAnd you want to know why, because he would be playing a position he is better suited for in the pros, WR. I just don’t believe the kid is ever going to be a everyday NFL quarterback. His throwing motion is horrendous and will hold him back at that level. He is an enormous stud of an athlete who yes is going to suit OSU at QB well and win them many games. But, for his own personal development he would be better playing at say Pitt who would love to move him to the position he will be best suited for in pro-ball.
Also Paul Jones would be better suited at Pitt than State Penn. Jones is a pocket passer, a game manager, not a spread-HD QB like Darryl Clark. They already have Newsome who is much better suited for their offense and brought in Robert Bolden who is also far better suited. Watch Jones highlight’s he has a cannon for an arm but is not a stud athlete. He’s listed as lower but looks to not break a 5.0 in a 40 yard dash, just doesn’t have great foot speed. So would he be better of at a school that runs a spread type offense and requires a quarterback that moves (one in which they will likely play better suited players, a la Pat Devlin’s situation), or a school that so values a pocket passer/game manager but may redshirt him a year and have him sit a year. I don’t think its a tough choice when I believe it would be at least 3 years of starting at Pitt vs. 0 at PSU.

Comment by Yinzer 08.19.09 @ 8:56 pm

I just don’t want a flashback to after the Bowling Green game.

I was inconsolable for days. I went to my buddy’s house, drank myself into a stupor, and floated around in his pool staring at the sky.

I took it hard.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 08.19.09 @ 9:03 pm

w Bill, the ACC can’t even sell out its own “Championship” game (in fact not even close!) The way I see it, the BE loses the Sun Bowl ( in El Paso, yawn, double-yawn); and gains the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando (Nice trip from the Northeast!) I’d rather send our 3rd team to the international bowl, again a more interesting travel destination than El Paso.

Comment by HbgFrank 08.19.09 @ 9:06 pm

And why not play McGill instead of Temple? It would be more competitive.

Comment by steve 08.19.09 @ 9:21 pm

HbgFrank, don’t care if the ACC chapionship sells out or not … they have much better bowl ties than BE, and there is a reason for that. Read the attached link to myespn.go.com

Like it or not, the bowl situation is going from bad to worse

Comment by w Bill 08.19.09 @ 9:22 pm

That’s what happens when you constantly hire commissioners from a non-football school. stupid stupid stupid

Comment by Yinzer 08.19.09 @ 9:34 pm

Hey Jimbo, was it any worse than the 3-0 end to our season?

Comment by Pitt_it_is 08.19.09 @ 9:44 pm

The Bowling Green Game was the ultimate low in Pitt FB…no doubt….utterly disgusting. Wanny deserved an AD bitch slap, but got the obligatory “stand by your man” crap from Slippery Steve. I called the AD department the Monday after the game, and droppped by contribution by $5K to the athletic fund. I told them, right then, thay I will not support a team that loses at home to inferior talent. Say what you want, but I did my part to show my disgust.
