Devlin Comes to Pitt

Sorry, offline matters and family traveling has been brutal for the last week.

Andrew Devlin makes it official that he’s transferring to Pitt.

Devlin left the Cavaliers because coach Al Groh fired his offensive coaching staff and brought in a new set of coaches who implemented the spread offense. Tight ends do not have a big role in spread offenses.

The coaches switched Devlin to defensive end and he tried out his new position for a month during spring drills. Giving away 50-plus pounds against offensive tackles was an eye-opening experience for Devlin. He knew it would be a struggle to add the necessary weight to compete for playing time on the defense next season, so he decided to transfer to a school where he could play tight end in a traditional pro-style offense.

“I want to stress that I really liked my time at Virginia,” Devlin said. “I loved my coaches. My teammates were great. But I couldn’t be unhappy on the football field for three more years. Virginia runs the 3-4 [defense]. The two defensive ends who played last year were 290 and 285 pounds. I was playing a full 30 pounds lighter at the position. If you’re light and you’re going up against 330-pound tackles, it’s not good.

“They tried to find a place for me to fit in, but I wanted to be happy playing football. I probably wouldn’t have seen the field next season because of my weight. It didn’t bother me to transfer because if I went somewhere else, I’d be sitting out anyway.”

Devlin’s mom will be happy. The article does a bit more than suggest that she was still giving him a hard time about choosing UVa.

As expected, he sees the opportunity to compete for the TE position after sitting out this year. Pitt keeps stockpiling some talented and highly sought TEs. Hopefully they will be used a lot more than just for blocking.

Tony Clemons, a WR from the area, who left Michigan’s program is heading to Colorado. It appears by the list of teams he also considered that Pitt never really entered the picture. I’m assuming it was his lack of interest in Pitt or wanting to leave the ‘Burgh, but who really knows for sure.

Chas,

It’s “Andrew” Devlin. Pat Devlin was the QB who transferred from Penn State.

I wish we could have got Pat Devlin somehow but he is going to become the next Joe Flacco at UD. I wish Wanny would have gone after Robert Marve who just left Miami. Marve is going to Purdue it looks like behind a long line of QB’s already there. Instead of going after a proven product with potential, the lovefest with Stull and Bostick will continue.

Whoops. Corrected.

Marve? Are you serious AJ? Kid is a prima donna, headcase who couldn’t hold the starting job he was handed in Miami between stupidity and poor play.

I realize Miami has other issues with O-line and WRs, but Marve was incredibly inconsistent.

I actually think from reading about Clemmons that its possible that both Pitt and WVU showed no interest. Initially after transferring he said he would definitely be considering Pitt and WVU. But in his list of schools he chose from they were not in it. Yet, a host of less than impressive schools were. I’m not sure if its possible they weren’t interested, or maybe in his release Rich Rod wouldn’t let him attend those 2 schools.

Chas, I agree with you that Marve has had both personal and academic problems but let’s put that aside for a moment. He’s only played one year and took a pretty average Miami team to a bowl. Secondly, after it was known that he was going to transfer, some pretty big names showed interest in him like Lane Kiffin, Bob Stoops, our friend Jim Levvit, as well as a struggling, but quality Purdue program. If these teams that are either on Pitt’s level or are far superior to what Pitt has been over the past decades see something in this kid, then there has to be something special there. I am not saying he is going to be the next Marino, but I would feel more comfortable next year with Marve over Stull. I like Stull and have a lot of respect for Bostic for all that he had thrown on him during his freshman year, but the bottom line is that I can’t stomach another loss to Rutgers (not 2008), BGSU, or any other average team because of QB play.

Marve hasn’t been the same since the car accident that he was in two years ago. He would not be the answer for us. I fear another year of suffering through poor QB play without much competition, but hopefully we can get a good signal caller like Anthony Gonzalez and start opening the QB competition by 2010.

AJ,

Marve won’t be playing for anyone this year. He has to sit as a transfer. Stull will have graduated. Bostick, Sunseri and Kolby Gray will be in the mix for 2010. So, that would make no difference with Rutgers this fall.

The interest in Marve was there for a good reason. He’s got the physical attributes.

Miami wasn’t that different from Pitt insofar as they have plenty of talent on paper. Shannon has recruited players. A team, however, has been something else. Marve was part of that.

AJ, Our loss to Rutgers had very little to do with Stull’s play, but in fact, could have well been attributed to his injury. He was by far having his best game when he got hurt in the 3rd quarter. Sadly, he never came close to regaining this form when he returned from the injury.

w bill – AJ qualified his statement about RU by saying “(not 2008)”.
