Adam Gunn has had his preliminary hearing continued for a week. It was scheduled for today, but it will be next Thursday instead. Austin Ransom’s hearing was continued as well.

The extra details of the event — from the police report — don’t make it any worse than expected. Just a lot more embarrassing for Gunn.

Gunn and a group of other men were attempting to cut the line at Club Zen late Saturday night. Police officers escorted the group away from the line and threatened to arrest them if they came back.

Gunn then circled around and got in front of one of the officers. When the officer tried to arrest him, Gunn “pulled away and spun around swinging” before he took off running through the Station Square parking lot. Police caught him when he tripped on a chain in the parking lot.

As one officer was trying to handcuff Gunn, Ransom ran up and swung at the officer. Ransom then fought with two other officers before they arrested him.

While that was occurring, one of the other men in the group – Anthony Coleman – challenged one of the officers to a fight. He also resisted arrest and broke one of the officer’s badges off of his shirt. Coleman was Tasered and arrested.

It also seems that Gunn got the taser as well.

This is not “kick off the football team” worthy. It’s a safe bet to assume that the final disposition will be lower. Small comfort right now.

They tried to fight a police officer. They should be kicked off the team or at least have their scholarships away

You do realize that two of the actors in question are neither on scholarship nor with the team anymore, right?

Comment by Orange Julius Page 05.14.09 @ 7:18 pm

Boot him off the team. We’re not PSU!

Comment by Gas 05.14.09 @ 8:07 pm

I’m pretty sure Dave is going to want to be harsh with Baldwin. Sounds like the coaches need to keep tabs on these players a little better. I do agree with Gas. I know I won’t feel that way in August, though.

Gunn was charged with Public drunkeness and resisting arrest I believe. He didn’t get assault so I’d have to believe the account of him swinging at a cop is incorrect. I’m all for discipline but kicking a kid off a team for public drunkeness would be absurd. The amount of college students and athletes that have gotten public drunkeness charges is probably extremely high. If Ransom were on the team still yes, he should get booted for swinging at a cop. But public drunkeness is not worthy of that.

Let’s forget about football for a second. Gunn is about to earn a master’s degree. As a recent Pitt graduate school grad, I can attest that interviewing in this terrible is incredibly difficult and sometimes brutal. Adam has made finding a career a lot harder on himself than it already was going to be. His most difficult interview question will most likely be about this shameful incident instead of overcoming the adversity of a broken neck, having great time management skills, ect. I don’t know how you could basically throw your professional future away on a Saturday night at a stupid club.

typo in above post, terrible economy

Comment by AJ 05.15.09 @ 7:12 am

Were the cops plain clothes or in uniform?

Comment by alcofan 05.15.09 @ 10:14 am

Kick them all off the team! Kepp misbehaving guys – anything it takes to get Wannstache fired!

Comment by greg 05.15.09 @ 11:23 am

Gunn has minimal talent, boot him and send a mssg that we are not st. penn west!! Wanny needs to draw the line.

Comment by Kurt 05.15.09 @ 7:08 pm

He needs to be gone.

I’m sorry, but this is getting embarassing.

I hate to say it, but if Baldwin needs something seriously done to him as well. Sure he might be the only offensive threat we have this year, but we should at least try to cling to what little integrity is left in college football these days in college football.

I agree with Ritz and AJ above. Adam Gunn is an honors student in grad school at Pitt. As far as I know this is his first brush with the law. As a criminal defense lawyer and longtime Panther fan, I don’t throw him under the bus for one drunken incident where misdemeanor charges are filed. As a player, he has improved every year and should be a big part of our defense this year. But regardless of his quality of play, we should support our athletes until the legal system runs its course. We should not rush to judgment based upon newspaper reports until the facts come out in court. We are NOT Penn State and should handle each case on its merits. There were no drugs involved in this incident and the only weapons employed were tasers on Gunn and another individual by the off duty police. Levance Fields, Rod Rutherford and other Pitt athletes have been involved in similar incidents and recovered nicely. Let’s see how this one pans out and hope some agreement is reached so all involved can move on and we can get back to business on the field. Hail to Pitt

I have interviewed hundreds of job applicants in
my career. Companies can be very selective, especially during a recession. So much public information on applicants is easily available. Most companies have a background check done by specialized firms. What can possibly be an isolated incident raises doubt about the applicant. Why take a chance? I wish it wasn’t this way, but I wish young people understood the potential terrible consequences of such seemingly minor mistakes.

Heard this from the coach’s mouth last night:

Gunn and Baldwin will both be on the team.

Baldwin’s incident, it turns out, happened weeks if not months ago. He was on a Pitt bus with other players, was drunk, and reached around another Pitt player to slap some girl on the arse when she was holding things up by not getting off the bus. I know that is just his version, but whoop dee doo.

Gunn realized he was screwing up and tried to get away by running from what he thought was a rent a cop, not a Pgh police officer.

Let’s not forget that Levance got drunk, got tasered and still did all right his senior year. Kids do stupid things, God only knows how many of us are still alive after what we did when I was an undergrad. The difference is that there was no internet when I (and most of you) were undergrads.

To everyone on here saying “do this, do that…we’re not Penn State!” Well of course you’re not, because we’re GOOD at football…but apart from that, consider:

PSU players fight other men, and smoke up. Smokers get 3-game suspensions.

Pitt players harass women and fight cops. Can’t wait to see what happens to them! Oh by the way, how many games was Levance Fields suspended for getting drunk and trying to steal a cop’s gun? Hmmm…..

Pitt remains a joke, both on AND off the field!

Comment by Pitt Sucks 05.16.09 @ 9:56 pm

Unlike the last post, most nitters are smart enough to keep their mouths shut. From 2002 – 2008, 46 State Penn football players were charged with 163 criminal counts.

link to sports.espn.go.com

Most all the guys remained on the team but it did not prevent the typical slow 11 major bowl game performance.

Pitt has their problems but the aggies have no room to talk.

If Gunn were up at John Deere U, he would just have to clean up Section EG rows 31-38 at the Beav and he would be back on the team with no further punishment needed!

Comment by AZ Panther 05.17.09 @ 2:37 am

Bossdaws – this was Gunn’s second arrest over the last five years.

Comment by Reed 05.17.09 @ 7:32 am

The way Gunn is looking now isn’t so good. Not that he is in the Penn State class of miscreants, but that he is in need of some serious counseling on growing up. Our high school athletes don’t pull this crap. 23, grad. student, 2nd brush with the law? C’mon.

Comment by TonyinHouston 05.17.09 @ 3:06 pm

Very well stated “Bossdaws”. I concur and would suggest you share your thoughts with Coach Dave. Incidentally, who let “Pitt Sucks” into this mature exchange? Rev George Mehaffey from “Big Eleven” country.

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 05.17.09 @ 7:11 pm

Gunn should be kicked off the team. We are not PSU. He is an adult and you just don’t get in altercations with police officers. The actions of these men were disgusting – get rid of Gunn.

Comment by Dishman 05.19.09 @ 3:08 pm

Were you present at the altercation Dishman? Perhaps you should be a witness for the prosecution. Rev. George Mehaffey

Comment by rev. george mehaffey 05.19.09 @ 4:55 pm

Have any of you actually met Adam Gunn? If you did, you would not be saying half the things you are.

Don’t be so quick to judge unless you really know facts and the people behind all this gossip

Comment by Paul Wall 05.21.09 @ 9:57 pm

I have met Adam Gunn, Paul Wall. He is an honors student in grad school at Pitt with a 3.75 GPA and a gentleman from a fine family. His hearing yesterday in Pgh City Court was continued to permit him to either enter into Allegheny County’s ARD program (as did Levance Fields) or resolve this matter via some sort of community service. The police involved have confirmed that Adam assaulted nobody in this incident and was quite remorseful for his actions, which were misdemeanor in nature. His resisting arrest charge was amended to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct. This case will resolve in Adam’s favor in the near future and he should soon be back on the football field where he will contribute significantly to a solid Panther defense. As stated above by the loyal Panther fans, we all made mistakes in our youth and accordingly should not be so quick to blindly judge and convict. Hail to Pitt.

Comment by Bossdaws 05.22.09 @ 12:59 pm

As a practicing criminal trial attorney for the last 36 years, I still can not understand the incredible stupidity of people, especially privelliged athletes, who fight and argue with policemen who, of course, have guns and other assorted weapons. Can’t we teach these idiots, who are at least ostenibly being educated at a highly respected university, to just say, “Yes Sir,” and keep their dumb asses out of jail and off the front pages? Perhaps as a prerequiste to handing some kid a free 100K education and the power to embarrass an entire university community, they should have to take a course like “Public Civility 80.” Franlky, if a young man can’t take orders from an armed policeman, I don’t know how he’ll ever respond to coaching.
