NLI Day 2009

Well, it is all underway. Here are the primary sources from PantherLair and PantherDigest.

At this point here are the commits who both sites confirm as signing their Letter of Intent (LOI).

Fernando Diaz — OL
Kolby Gray — QB
Cory King — OL
Dion Lewis — RB
Jack Lippert — DE
Bernardo Nunez — DE
Devin Street — WR

PantherDigest is also listing:

Raymond Graham — RB

I’ll be updating as it comes through.

9:10 UPDATE: PantherLair has also confirmed Graham.

Both sites have added:

Tyrone Ezell — DT

PantherLair is now listing :

Dan Mason — LB

Nearly halfway through the verbals.

9:30 UPDATE: PantherDigest still has not listed Mason.

9:50 UPDATE: Mason is on both lists now.

Also signed according to both:

Ed Tinker — WR

Kevin Adams — RB

Carl Fleming — DB

Panther Lair has also added:

Jason Hendricks — RB

At this rate, it will be over by noon.

9:55 UPDATE: One more from PantherLair:

Todd Thomas — WR

Rivals.com a little faster than Scout.com this year.

10:35 UPDATE: Still nothing updated from Scout.com.

Rivals.com/PantherLair has added two more:

Brock DeCicco — TE

Ryan Schlieper — OL

That leaves just 4 verbals without confirmed LOIs at this point.

11:13: UPDATE:

PantherLair has added two more to the signed list:

Shane Gordon — LB

Jason Douglas — RB

PantherDigest has not updated in some time.

12:10 UPDATE:

PantherLair puts one more in the signed category:

Juantez Hollins — OL

There are reports that Will Clarke will not be signing today.

That wraps it up, except for the outside chance that Malcolm Bush, a 3-star TE from NJ decides to join Pitt.

at 10:30, from what I have been able to determine, no LOI from Malcolm Bush, Shane Gordon or Josh Evans — either for Pitt or anyone else

Evans signed with Florida — the rich gets richer

Comment by w bill 02.04.09 @ 11:08 am

gordon is signed 2 pitt

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 11:14 am

I just read where all the commits have signed except for Will Clark, who does not intend to sign today (no reason given)

Comment by w bill 02.04.09 @ 11:30 am

According to Dokish a “B-” class. No pro style QB, tiny RBs.

BTW, he gives PSU an “A” highlighted by their QB recruit.

I’ll take a “C” if it includes one usable QB.

Comment by steve 02.04.09 @ 12:24 pm

Whats the story with Will Clarke?

Comment by stache 02.04.09 @ 12:26 pm

Yo
Walt Harris to Seneca Valley? Maybe he can take Bill Stull back and teach him how to throw a football.

Comment by Pitt79 02.04.09 @ 12:29 pm

well, K. Smith was from SV, but whatever. can we move on from Walt?

Comment by Joey T 02.04.09 @ 12:43 pm

Average class at best….how did West Virginia out recruit us? We better make it to a BCS next year or I’m screaming for a new head coach!

Comment by Marco 02.04.09 @ 12:51 pm

Ya,
I hope Clarke does sign. I look for him to be the big time sleeper in the class. Long, lanky D-end who can run, w/ hoops talent. Sounds like a potential Romeus to me. Put some bulk on the kid and he could be a stud. I also like the gray kid at QB, he may not be a pro-style QB but he can move, which is something nice compared to what we have for mobility now.

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 12:56 pm

Also,
it seems like this year we struggled with closing on recruits, something that Wanny has come through with in the past. Losing out on Evans and Holmes were two big misses and guys who could have improved the class big time.

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 12:58 pm

Let’s not go crazy here- the class is ranked #28 by scout which is pretty damn good all things considered (for what all these rankings are worth anyway). Let’s face it- Pitt is not going to be Ohio State or Florida or USC with all blockbuster recruits every year.

This looks to me like a solid class. The top recruits aren’t going to flock to Pitt until they can prove they are a top-15 team/program/coaching staff. The first couple years its easy to sell the whole “we’re building a winner” line but shitting the bed against BGSU and scoring ZERO points in a decent bowl game against a team that gave up 60+ the game before is going to give some guys pause. I just think they have to produce some great on-field results this upcoming season and then things can really get rolling.

Let’s not forget though- overall there is a relatively deep, relatively talented core on this team now that is going to beat anything they’ve had in years as a whole (not counting #25 of course).

Comment by Dan35 02.04.09 @ 1:32 pm

I read on PSI that Will Clark has noticed the depth Pitt has at DE and is wondering abput playing time; he is going to visit WVU this weekend before signing LOI. I would have to think he, as a 2 star, will not be getting redshirted no matter where he would go (unless he goes to IUP or Slippery Rock.)

This leads into two good reasons why this is a (supposedly) subar recruiting class:

1) the current Pitt roster is full of underclassmen, with several proven and potential players. There is no longer the promise of immediate playing time for many of the recruits as in the past.

2) All of the experts have recognized that this is not a bumper year for Western PA recruits, as were the last few years … and for a school like Pitt, which doesn’t have the national rep as Oh St, USC, Okla, etc., the local prospects are very important.

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 2:47 pm

so is chris burns the front runner for starting RB next year ?

Comment by Snala the Panther 02.04.09 @ 2:55 pm

Looks like one of those classes that adds needed depth. You go for a Baldwin in every class, but in the end if you get some McGee’s, then your staff needs to go to to work on them. If Wannstedt has some Romeus type of players in this class(sleepers), then this is an amazing class. We will have to wait and see with this one.

Dan, bad won-loss records do not seem to impact ND on their recruiting. Every year Charlie has one of the best recruiting classes then fizzles.

I must have been typing as Marty sent it. Any suggestions who should replace Cavanaugh?

Comment by Pidoublet 02.04.09 @ 3:49 pm

ANYONE

Comment by Jamie H 02.04.09 @ 3:49 pm

Wow, Paul Zeise of the PG is reporting that Cavanaugh is leaving to take a job with the Jets, probably as a QB coach.
Sorry, can’t link at work, but it’s on their front page under breaking news.

Comment by Rob 02.04.09 @ 3:49 pm

Great news!! who are some potential candidates to replace him?

Comment by corey at slippery rock u. 02.04.09 @ 3:50 pm

I think it is good news; Cav is a NFL coach.

I know this won’t happen but I wouldn’t mind one bit if Walt came back as OC.

Comment by w bill 02.04.09 @ 3:50 pm

I wonder if Wanny was backing him in the media while encouraging him to leave behind closed doors. This is great news!!!

Comment by Pittastic 02.04.09 @ 3:52 pm

Well, the class doesn’t look great, but at least Cavanaugh is gone. I see that Dokish’s grade was because he said the QB and the little RBs were better suited for a spread offense, not a pro offense, which I agree with. He said it was almost like they were preparing to start running a more spread with the recruits. Maybe that’s the plan now? We’ll have to see if the new OC is a spread guy. With a spread offense, this class makes a lot more sense to me. You want Gray and those little RBs then.

Comment by Mark 02.04.09 @ 3:57 pm

Ya,
I agree w bill. Is there any possibility that Walt could come back. I always thought he was a terrible head coach…but would be a good OC / QB if that was his only job. Now w/ wanny bringing in RB’s, OL, DL. Harris bringing in and working w/ QB’s would be a successful combo. Think of all the QB’s he brought in/or mentored: Pete Gonzalez, David Preistly, Rod Rutherford, Luke Getsy, Tyler Palko, and Joe Flacco. He defiantely had an eye for some talent, and also developed some guys to make them good QB’s…that position was always good under him. He also brought in good WR’s…comboing that w/ everything Wanny does could make a good combo…but I highly doubt Wanny would ever bring him in.

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 4:02 pm

Walt Harris for OC!

Comment by Sharty Mottenheimer 02.04.09 @ 4:03 pm

there’s no way in hell wanny allows the new o coord to install a spread offense. that’s 180 degress from wanny’s “philosophy” of a power running game.

Comment by Scott 02.04.09 @ 4:05 pm

Walt is available, unemployed and lives in the area …. so Pitt wouln’t have to throw much money at him or even have to spring for moving expenses … plus the guy who fired him is no longer at Pitt. Also, the boosters who wanted him out a few years ago but now appreciate him more.

I still don’t see it happening ….. Wanny is schedule to be on local ESPN radio at 4:45 to talk about the recruits and the radio hosts indicated they will ask him about replacements. I will update if he says anything worth mentioning.

Comment by w bill 02.04.09 @ 4:07 pm

I thought Walt took the Seneca Valley job? I wouldn’t blame him for trying to score an OC position at a college though. He would be a great OC, just don’t let him touch the defense. Let’s see what is out there first OK? If we end up with Harris after a nice lengthy search, I wouldn’t cry too much about it. But if he gets hired tonight, I would be very concerned.

Comment by Panthoor 02.04.09 @ 4:19 pm

While on the surface, the thought of Walt Harris coming back to be the OC doesn’t seem to make much sense for him, the more I think about it…the more I think it could *possibly* happen.

Steve Pederson was always a pretty strong backer of Harris, so it’s not like he was the one who fired him. Walt still lives here in Pittsburgh, so there isn’t any relocation required.

The real question is: why would Walt Harris be willing to accept the OC position, when you would think he could certainly get a head coaching gig at a mid-tier DI program. But, the Post-Gazette mentioned a few days ago that Walt Harris was a candidate for the Seneca Valley High School head coaching position…so maybe he is getting desperate? Or maybe he just wants to stay in Pittsburgh for the near future…in which case that could work perfectly for Pitt.

I’m not quite sure how well Wanny/Harris would get along given the history there, but I don’t think there could be a better choice for OC than Walt Harris.

GET IT DONE WANNY/PEDERSON!

BOMBSHELL! I did not see that one coming. This gives me new hope for next season

BigGuy- as to my recruiting comments above and your ND comparison: My point was teams like ND, Ohio State can survive bad years, embarrasing losses, etc. but Pitt unfortunately can’t. It’s just the sad truth. I was able to make it to South Bend for the Pitt game this past season and as much as I hate ND I have to admit there is nothing like a college football game there, which they manage to turn into a non-stop first-class three day event. I just think people shouldn’t be surprised if we don’t have incredible recruiting classes every year. I actually think this one is solid anyway- here’s to hoping the new OC can make some things happen with what we already have

HAIL TO PITT

Comment by Dan35 02.04.09 @ 4:21 pm

There’s no way in hell that Harris will be the new OC. I just hope Wannstedt stops thinking he is coaching in the Big 10 in 1976, but I doubt it. I think we’re going to find that it will be the same with the new OC because Wannstedt is just going to tell him what he wants.

Comment by Mark 02.04.09 @ 4:30 pm

My thoughts are that it is very possible and boardering on likely that Harris would come. I may not be correct on this but from what I remember Harris was fired by Long and not Pederson. I believe Pederson had a very good relationship w/ harris and liked what he did as a coach. Therefore, I could see as soon as the job opened peterson saying this guy is free, he lives here and he has a good football mind to Wanny. Harris can bring the one thing Wanny hasn’t really brought: good Qb’s and good QB development. And Wanny could bring the thing harris couldn’t good o and d-lines. I think this would be a perfect compliment to each other and I think it is something that could happen.

Comment by Willy Ralphard 02.04.09 @ 4:38 pm

Mark,

Why do you say there’s no chance? We’re talking about a guy who’s apparently interested in taking a high school head coaching job. Surely the OC position at Pitt would be a MUCH better job than HC at Seneca Valley.

So, are you saying there’s no chance Pitt would pursue him…or no chance Harris would be interested if they did?

Comment by Jake 02.04.09 @ 4:46 pm

Nothing really to report from Wannstedt’s interview on the Paulsen, Logan and Crow show on ESPN 1250. He basically skirted the question about Cavenaugh, said he was a great coach and that he would have a statement later this week. He talked generically about the recruiting class, without really naming any of the incoming kids by name, but said he thought it was a solid class.

Comment by Jake 02.04.09 @ 5:10 pm

“as much as I hate ND I have to admit there is nothing like a college football game there, which they manage to turn into a non-stop first-class three day event. ”

Dan, I can’t disagree with you. College games at ND, OSU, Michigan, PSU (ouch), and a number of other colleges ARE big events. Pitt has difficulty in filling the stadium. Pitt doesn’t offer the “excitement” that a number of other schools do, so they have to offer a different package. Rutgers is very similar to Pitt. They must offer the same “package” as Pitt since they can’t offer “OSU excitement”

Comment by BigGuy 02.04.09 @ 5:19 pm

Wanny said much morw on Fox 970 than on Espn 1250. He didin’t talk specifically about Cav but didn’t deny it.

He did say some very revealing things about the QB position that I think is a big relief. He said that after the Cincy game, he became convinced about the value of having a mobile QB that can make plays. It was at that point where they decided to put out inquiries all over the country which resulted in the recruitment of Kolby Gray. While he expects to still run a pro offense, he wants more mobiiity from the QB.

He also said that Todd Thomas was the best athlete, B DeCicco the best TE and Dam Mason the best ILB in PA. He said that J Hollins (OL from Alquippa) and T Ezell (DL from Steel Valley) were beast with much potential. Finally, he was pleased with the inroads made in New Jersey.

BigGuy, Pitt will always have problem playing in a Pro city. I lived in Morgantown and State College and the games are events because that is the only thing going on. Steelers and Pens get far more publicity and ownership here in the Burg.

Comment by w bill 02.04.09 @ 5:36 pm

“Pitt will always have problem playing in a Pro city”

W bill, I agree. Rutgers is in the same position. Their attendance (and stadium) is smaller than Pitt’s. It is my understanding that they are “selling” players on academics, “family”, character of staff, and quality of schedule. Their success in recruiting has increased. These are aspects that “sold” me and, perhaps as importantly, my parents on Pitt. It turned out to be a good choice.
