Robert Morris comes to the Pete tonight in a non-televised game. Robert Morris is in a stretch of a lot of games in not a lot of time.

The Colonials have taken on several Top 25 teams this season, losing 78-57 to then No. 22 Xavier and then No. 25 Miami 70-62. The Panthers, though, have been particularly vexing to Robert Morris. Pitt has won all 26 games in the series, and they have not lost any of their 64 games against the Northeast Conference.

Then there is the whole timing issue. Not only are the Colonials large underdogs to the Panthers, but the contest is the middle game of a grueling five games in ten days.

“It’s a very odd spot on the schedule,” said Robert Morris head coach Mike Rice, a former Pitt assistant. “Pitt has almost a week off after the game, whereas we have two and a half days. The timing isn’t great for us.”

The Colonials began the stretch with home wins over Bryant and Monmouth and will finish it off with road games at St. Francis (N.Y.) and Central Connecticut State. St. Francis is the only team to beat the Colonials in conference play this season.

The storyline is not that Robert Morris has never beaten Pitt. It is another assistant that worked for Pitt and Coach Dixon who moved on and coming in for a game.

Rice, in his third season at Robert Morris, was instrumental in recruiting nearly one-third of Pitt’s roster — Brad Wanamaker, Nasir Robinson, Travon Woodall and, to a lesser extent, Ashton Gibbs.

“I’m excited about playing Pitt,” Rice said following Saturday’s 75-62 victory over Monmouth. “I’m a fan of Pitt just like everyone else, especially because I recruited some of those players. I spent a lot of nights with Jamie Dixon and the staff. I’m excited to see where we match up against one of the top 5 teams in the country. I’m excited to go back to a place where I worked tremendously hard for a year.”

This is the first meeting between the two schools since a 67-53 Pitt win on Nov. 29, 2006, a game in which Rice was an assistant for the Panthers.

The Rice hire, surprisingly brief, was meaningful not just for the recruiting work that Rice did to help reopen Philly area. First, it was Dixon’s first real hire for a new top assistant with Rohrssen moving on to Manhattan. It showed that Dixon could identify quality assistants and get them. The following up with Herrion and even moving up with Brandin Knight, only made that clearer. Then, Rice after only a year landed an improving mid-major job helped make the Pitt assistant position even more attractive.

This is the start of a slight decrease in Pitt’s schedule intensity.

Up next is a non-conference game tonight against Robert Morris. When the Big East schedule resumes Saturday afternoon, the Panthers travel to Rosemont, Ill., to face DePaul, which is still looking for its first conference victory. After that there are home games against Cincinnati and West Virginia.

Of the remaining nine Big East games, the Panthers will only play three games against teams that are currently ranked.

I expect a pretty good game from Robert Morris. The kids there have played Pitt in the summer leagues. They know them, and they will be hyped.

Plus, I just expect a little let down from the Panthers in at least the first half. It’s not conference. It is a clearly inferior team. It is natural.

After tonight, best wishes to Rice and the Colonials.

With all due respect to Bobby Mo U., I just wanted to talk about Larry Fitz’s performance last night.

Yes, I was rooting for the Steelers and wanted Larry to fail with every once of my heart (sorry non-Steeler fans on here).

But even in defeat, Larry showed why he is, and always will be better than T.O.’s and Randy Moss’s of the world. He didn’t complain about not getting the ball for the first three quarters, instead he just came through bigtime for his team in the 4th quarter. Hell, he even nearly stopped James Harrison on the 100 yard int return.

In the end, Big Ben and the Steelers were just a little too much for Arizona to handle, but Larry (and his QB Kurt Warner) are two guys that make football fun to watch. I can’t say that I was rooting for him yesterday, but I can say he did all Pitt fans proud.

Now Gerald Hayes, on the other hand… Dude, tell them you went to Pitt next time!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 02.02.09 @ 12:51 pm

Jimbo’s son,

I think Hayes didn’t want to mention that he played at Pitt because he was playing the Steelers.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 02.02.09 @ 1:30 pm

Tony In Harrisburg,

I’m not following your logic, Fitz doesn’t have a problem mentioning Pitt but Hayes does? Fitz was playing the Steelers too?

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.02.09 @ 2:05 pm

I was watching the Super Bowl with my dad (Note: we are both Eagles fans but were fairly impartial to this game), and he mentioned something offhand that really made me realize just why Larry is so well liked. Not knowing Fitz went to Pitt, he said “Fitzgerald always throws the ball to the ref after every catch, no matter what.” So many WRs and RBs are content to flip the ball away or just drop it where it is, but no matter the situation, Fitz always has the presence of mind to be polite and get the ball to the referee. Class act every single time.

Did anyone note that Holmes caught a pass with about 47 seconds to go. Obviously, time was extremely critical. Yet Holmes had to walk forward to let the crowd know that he was the one who just caught the pass. Larry would have been lined up on the line of scrimmage during the time that it took Holmes to get in that little extra bit of showboating.

Comment by BigGuy 02.02.09 @ 3:39 pm

Will the Pitt-RMU game tonight be “televised” over the computer?

Comment by BigGuy 02.02.09 @ 3:41 pm

Yes

Comment by David 02.02.09 @ 3:55 pm

Well Holmes did that stupid imitation of Lebron, which should have been a 15 yard penalty, while Larry as usual showed why he is and always will be a class act.

Comment by Ira 02.02.09 @ 4:04 pm

BigGuy, I know exactly what you were referring to when Holmes celebrated instead of lining up for the next play wasting a few seconds. I also thought he came off like an idiot in a couple of post game interviews. But nonetheless, while he was no Fitz, he certainly was a big play guy for all 3 playoff games.

Pitt now down to #5 in AP behind Duke & UNC but ahead of Wake (all 2 loss teams) which is what I expected …. and not real pissed either.

Hate to say it but I will probably pay more attention to UConn – UL than Pitt – BobbyMo tonight

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 5:01 pm

correction – above poll was Coaches poll. AP has Pitt 6th with UL 5th (3 loss) – still not mad, long way to go

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 5:08 pm

I’m unhappy about Pitt being ranked beneath the two ACC glamour teams, one of which lost AT HOME to BC.

Then you have the non-glamour team of that conference, Wake, who beat both Duke and Carolina and isn’t in the top 5.

Pitt lost two tough ones, on the road, against ranked teams.

Yeah, Holmes probably should’ve been penalized for the celebration. But I was too happy to care at the time.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 02.02.09 @ 5:11 pm

w bill, Holmes did make some great plays. I guess everything is relative. Players are generally kept on a team as a result of how well they play and not what kind of jerks they appear to be. The supply and demand principal. It’s only when they become a disruptive force they get unloaded e.g. T.O. Owens, Jeremy Shockley, etc. Eventually, players are no longer in the league. Then they can dance and showboat all they want, but they no longer have an audience. Unfortunately, too many of them no longer have a bank account.

Comment by BigGuy 02.02.09 @ 5:59 pm

earlier this year, police found marijuana butts in Holmes car and cited him with a misdemeanor charge. Although there were no NFL sanctions and Tomlin had no pressure to penalize him, Holmes was inactivated for a big game vs NY FB Giants. Overall, Holmes has been good citizen, doesn’t miss practice and is a good teammate … but e does have baggage.

In fact, Steelers were able to get him in the 1st Round in the draft after their last SB victory due to character issues/behavior dispayed while Holmes was at The OSU.

But before you get too judgemental, please note that Larry Fitzgerald has a restraining order filed aganst him

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 6:27 pm

Can i listen to the game on the internet tonight for free anywhere?

Comment by Neddy 02.02.09 @ 6:56 pm

go through the pitt athletics site, you can watch for free since its a non televised game

Comment by ryan 02.02.09 @ 7:02 pm

Why does every team seem to shoot the lights out against us early? One of these games, it’s really gonna catch up to us.

Comment by Chris 02.02.09 @ 7:25 pm

On the Pitt website it says the “Media Content is unavailable”. Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

Comment by neddy 02.02.09 @ 7:25 pm

is anyone getting the video feed thru the Pitt site or channelsurfing??

Comment by Tiger Paul 02.02.09 @ 7:28 pm

nope it seems to be crap tonight. stupid tv feed

I don’t know why I pay for that service. it sucks and it is suppose to be free tonight.

Comment by Tiger Paul 02.02.09 @ 7:35 pm

Love the way Dixon, Gibbs, and Wanamaker have stepped up lately. If we get this kind of consistent contribution from our guards, the team plays at an entirely different level.

Comment by Chris 02.02.09 @ 7:40 pm

Wanna see how to break the press? Watch what UConn is doing to Louisville on ESPN. Impressive.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.02.09 @ 7:54 pm

You can tear out your wife’s hair while bouncing her head off a marble floor with one hand and holding your child in the other as long as you hand the ball to the ref after a big play. Everybody has their skeletons.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.02.09 @ 8:02 pm

first of all that isn’t fitzgerald’s wife. secondly, that is her account and the woman is clearly a gold-digger. check her past.

Comment by omar 02.02.09 @ 8:04 pm

The odd thing about the Fitzgerald restraining order was that first, it is an old story that is just getting a lot of play now – and it should raise concern when the woman who files it admits that she may have struck him on the face first. May have struck him on the face? How exactly do you become unable to tell if you hit someone in the face. There definitely was an argument, I just don’t know whether it is like she says it is. Wasn’t she an Oakland Raiders cheerleader?…..

Comment by Joey D 02.02.09 @ 8:10 pm

She’s something like 13 years older than Fitz.. what the heck is he doing with her??? I’m guessing he could have his pick of women.

Comment by Ann 02.02.09 @ 8:35 pm

“Wasn’t she an Oakland Raiders cheerleader?…..”

That was his first mistake.

Comment by Dugdog 02.02.09 @ 8:37 pm

I like that UConn is beating up on L’Ville tonight. It will give the Panthers something to play for when they play the Huskies in a couple of weeks.

Comment by Colt Convert 02.02.09 @ 8:47 pm

y’all prbably noticed Ryan Schlieper switched his commit from Maryland to PITT. Anybody seen him play?

Comment by IronManEE68 02.02.09 @ 8:47 pm

Early February and a team shoots 57% from the floor, 58% from 3 and scored 72 would shock most people at the beginning of the season if our stats from the game were not released. Good effort from Bobby Mo but they just had no chance.

Comment by Joey D 02.02.09 @ 8:53 pm

– Uconn certainly certainly plays like No. 1

– Sam seems to feast on the lesser opponents

– Regardless of who she is, Fitzgerald has to be more resonsible as to who he impregnates, especially because who he is

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 8:54 pm

Pitt just made an offer to Schliefer (3* OG) probably because a few hopefuls are not coming …. supposedly Isaac Holmes (4* DT) going to Rutgers and Josh Evans (4* S) preferring FL

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 9:03 pm

Omar — my bad on the wife comment. Children out of wedlock are the best kind. And I’m sure she tore out her own hair and beat her head against a marble floor for kicks. Point is, Fitzgerald is no angel and folks should stop acting like he’s the second-coming.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.02.09 @ 9:13 pm

according to one oof the Fanhouse Links shown on this site, The Ohio State Athketic Dept is losing money ….. just how much money are they paying Prior?

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 9:17 pm

Back to the game. Good win. Rice has RMU playing well. We have to do something about our perimeter defense. And what has happened to Brown? Wish he could stay healthy. 13 dimes for Fields. Think that might be a career high.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.02.09 @ 9:24 pm

Is Brown injured, or just ineffective? He hasn’t had a real good game for a while.

Comment by w bill 02.02.09 @ 9:35 pm

The following was copied and pasted from Wikipedia:

Holmes has acknowledged selling drugs on the street corner of his hometown of Belle Glade, Florida as a teenager; he says that his mother’s influence and a desire to play professional football made him decide to stop.[8]

Holmes was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida on May 27, 2006 for disorderly conduct.[9] Charges were subsequently dropped after Holmes paid a fine. Holmes was arrested for a second time on June 18, 2006 for domestic violence and assault in Columbus, Ohio.[10]

On July 7, 2006, Holmes appeared in Franklin County Court in Columbus, Ohio for both a pre-trial regarding the domestic case and hearing regarding the traffic ticket. He plead no contest to the traffic ticket and agreed to pay a fine. While Lashae Boone, the mother of Holmes’ daughter and the victim in the assault case, requested that the domestic violence and assault charges be dropped, the prosecutor refused. Boone and their daughter accompanied Holmes to court. The charges were later dropped.[11]

On October 23, 2008, Holmes was arrested in Pittsburgh and cited by officers for possession of marijuana.[12][13] Holmes released an apology after missing a game, stating that he wished to “focus all of [his] efforts on helping our team win on the field and achieve its ultimate goal.”[14]

No editorial comment presented.

Comment by BigGuy 02.02.09 @ 9:39 pm

Dave:

The point is your information is suspect. Fitzgerald was not arrested and the woman’s account is suspect at best. Most professional athletes who slam a woman’s face into the ground would be arrested immediately. This was not the case and instead the woman filed a restraining order. How does that make sense? The woman is clearly a gold-digger.

Nobody said Fitzgerald is a saint. Just seems like an alright dude. Less arrogant than some of his colleagues.

Comment by omar 02.02.09 @ 10:10 pm

I wonder if Holmes and Mickey Mouse burned one together? Ha! Anyway, I wonder if this was a slight letdown by Pitt tonight, or has RMU really improved that much over the last couple seasons.

Comment by Dugdog 02.02.09 @ 10:10 pm

Pitt obviously didn’t play with any intensity tonight. Just the ammunition Dixon needs to kick their butts this week in practice.

Comment by omar 02.02.09 @ 10:12 pm

a trap game against a good friend who recruited many of the current Pitt players — wouldn’t worry about it
