Sportsmanship

Welcome back Chas. My pleasure to fill in for a few days and I will be doing my best to offer some opinions on a semi-regular basis.

During the Syracuse games a few commenters reacted to the Zoo chanting “You hit girls,” in reference to Eric Defendorf and his incident from last November

Defendorf did his time (short suspension and community service) and returned to the team, but Big East student sections are, and will certainly continue, reminding him of the incident throughout the season. Just like they did with Marcus Williams, the laptop thief, a few years back. But my Pitt fans, a short memory we have. You could argue that Defendorf was just pulling a Yuri –  Yuri Demetrus that is. Yes, that’s right. Yuri Demetrus hit girls too. Too bad he couldn’t play basketball like Defendorf.

Hitting a girl is wrong. You don’t need me to tell you that. But should the incident be fair game during a basketball … game? Here is what two commenters had to say in the Pitt Syracuse Open Thread.

First from Ira:

Ehh the zoo was kind of annoying, maybe I am just old fashioned, but making fun of hitting a girl chant just seems in poor taste.

And now the other side of the argument from Mike:

i think it was funny when the zoo was chanting “you hit girls”, if he doesnt like it, then dont hit girls. If steeler fans want to chant that at fitz, so be it, but i think the Zoo did an awsome job today, its a great home court.
people need to lighten up

I am on Ira’s side on this one. When I was at Pitt, the Zoo not-so-creatively came up with a “Quinn’s a pussy” chant directed towards Notre Dame’s Chris Quinn who had owned the Panther’s in recent match ups. The chant was so obvious it could be heard on the National television broadcast. I wrote an entry for my old blog condemning the chant and my opinion has not changed.

Unlike Quinn**, Defendorf brought the chant upon himself deservedly through his actions, but to quote an old elementary school adage, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”

** Unless Quinn deserved it for raining ridiculous 3-pointers on the Panthers, or for having a scrawny mustache

College athletes represent their Universities and should act accordingly. When students attend a game, and choose to make themselves heard, they are representing the University as well. There are other, classier, ways to support your team.

And yes, I know… everyone else is doing it so why shouldn’t we.

These actions have a trickle-down effect. In both Pittsburgh and in Maine I have covered high school athletics on a semi-regular basis for different newspapers. More and more I am seeing similar student sections and similar vulgar antics at the lower levels of athletics. Is it okay in high school? How about junior high? Actually, I might expect it from junior high kids…

A solution? Conferences should have a Sportsmanship award for each sport. I’ve seen it for high schools. Both the team and the fans should be taken into account for the award. Players and coaches should vote and a banner should be awarded. Maybe it wont solve the whole problem, but it will give a little motivation for fans, teams and schools to clean up their act.

Stay classy Pitt. I’d love to hear some other opinions. Just don’t call me a pussy.

Isn’t a sportsmanship award what they give out to every kid on a little league team?

Comment by Joey D 01.22.09 @ 6:08 pm

Actually no, that is the Coaches Award. I got it one year and my brother said “That award means you suck, but you have a good attitude about it.”

Comment by Keith W. 01.22.09 @ 6:16 pm

I thought Demetrius was kicked off the team though….something that Syracuse didn’t do. Imay be wrong though…but I thought he was.

Comment by Ontario Lett's Go Pitt 01.22.09 @ 6:21 pm

He was. But please… if he was a better player… like Defendorf, do you think he would have been? I’d like to think yes, but logic tells me no.

Think Rod Rutherford.

Also, Yuri’s charges were slightly more severe, including burglary because he broke into the girls room to hit her.

Comment by Keith W. 01.22.09 @ 6:24 pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s good to read that in print.

We PITT fans don’t have to look any further than our own when it comes to bad behavior. It’s a real problem in sports and while we decry the other schools (and players) for their idiots – we do the same.

I find it odd that the same people that are bitching about how the ‘world has gone to hell in a hand basket” and that “it wasn’t like this when I was a kid” are the same people that scream obscenities in public and take every day actions like cutting off others when they are driving, or talking loudly on a cell phone when in a restaurant. Well, civility doesn’t cost a thing and makes everyone better when it’s exercised.

I know a huge Steeler fan that drove up for the football playoff game last week (from Baltimore) decked out in full Black & Gold. I asked him how the game was and he said that it was ruined for him because the drunken Steeler fans in his section rode some Raven fans (and their families) so hard that the Ravens fans had to leave in the third quarter. He felt embarassed and ashamed, and sorry that it happened when it should have been a great time for everyone.

Great, wow! How much fun is that – ruin an experience another family paid dearly for just to prove your a great hometown fan.

I know others who won’t take their young kids to sporting events for these same reasons. Well, we get what we ask for in the long run.

Comment by Reed 01.22.09 @ 6:32 pm

I was at the game. I thought the initial chant was ok, even funny. Right after the first one Devendorf hoisted an ill advised 3 to try to quiet the crowd. He missed and it was a plus for Pitt. When some students tried to go back to that chant you could tell the whole group was half hearted about it – not thinking it’s funny or effective any more. I have heard worse things at games.

Let’s not forget the incredible amount of favorable decisions that Devendorf has received. The school initially recommended that he be suspended from school, meaning he would miss the rest of the season at least. Because he’s a player they intervene and get him a slap on the wrist. He misses a couple of weeks over the holidays when they only have 2 games and Boeheim makes him ride the bench. Syracuse should be ashamed of the way they handled this. And I am OK with opposing student sections bringing a little heat when the university folded like a chair.

Comment by Curtis 01.22.09 @ 6:50 pm

i’m all for creativity. i cringe when i hear the zoo chanting ‘asshole’ or ‘airball’. that stuff’s been done to death. i thought ‘you hit girls’
was pretty good.

oh, and pull the stick out of your ass, pussy.

Comment by scott 01.22.09 @ 7:02 pm

Have you heard the Dukies chants??? This was tame by comparison. But I will give the Dukies this…they find some humerous way to present their chants. You hit girls…seemed lame.

Comment by dan 72 01.22.09 @ 7:08 pm

Wasn’t Devendorf on double-secret probation when he hit the girl? What did he do to get on probation the first time – – – wasn’t it for “harming a student” in the spring of 08? If he was on probation then 2 wrongs sort of made a right b/c he is still playing. Calling a player a “pussy” lacks creativity but then again, so does putting out “cheer sheets” like many ACC student sections (no idea if any BE schools do this but I hope not).

Does anyone remember in the early 90’s when a Pitt fan would wear a gorilla mask and hold up signs of things to yell when the other team was being announced? Usually it was stuff like “you suck”, “go home” or “loser”. Also, Panther Paul danced behind the benches (with a cape) during timeouts. Maybe I was just drunk unless someone else saw that stuff.

Comment by C 01.22.09 @ 7:21 pm

This wasn’t Devendorf’s first problem on campus. The one article said he already was working on community service for an earlier incident. It sounds to me like he can’t handle the fire water. My question is: Would Devendorf be chanting the same thing, if not worse, if he was in the stands? I don’t go for the vulgar language chants, but the ones that “if the shoe fits wear it” chants are relatively harmless. By the sounds of the one article, many of the SU student body weren’t “fans” of Devendorf being reinstated just because he’s a good B-Ball player. But sometimes sports gives you a license to kill, just ask OJ. So, I believe he got off fairly cheap, and I don’t believe that particular chant destroyed Devendorf’s ego, or better yet, the reputation of the university.

Comment by ltl 01.22.09 @ 7:43 pm

this was a mild chant but i dont agree with anything too harmful. leave the cussing and name calling out.

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 01.22.09 @ 7:50 pm

Who was “Panther Paul”?? right on Scott.

Comment by Tiger Paul 01.22.09 @ 8:20 pm

Keith, I am much older than most of the bloggers on this site and by no means a youg wise ass. But or the life of me, I see little wrong with the chant “you hit girls.” I am certainly against profanity, and there certainly classless non-profane statement, like they guy at an NBA game a few years ago that was yelling at a player about the player’s daughter who was real ill.

However, I suggest you attend an NFL game. Don’t know what it is like in Foxboro, but I would never take my daughter to Heinz Field or to Cleveland, and my sister who lives in Philly wouldn’t dare wear a Steeler shirt at a game there for fear of her safety. I assure you that compared to many NFL crowds I’ve been around, the Zoo seems quite tame.

Comment by w bill 01.22.09 @ 8:50 pm

i still can not believe we are talking about this chant 3 days later, i am a season ticket holder and the entire row i sit at was laughing when the zoo said this chant. This row has people from kids to older adults and they all seemed to like it. Really, what is the big deal over this, he does hit girls right?…the zoo wasnt saying anything that was incorrect or made up. I am sure he will hear the same chants or maybe even worse chants as he plays away games in the Big East.

Comment by mike 01.22.09 @ 8:54 pm

I’ll change the subject with good news!

Just read on PSI that Dan Mason, 4-star ILB from Pgh Penn Hills, just gave verbal to Pitt .. which is surprising since he was suppsed to visit WVU this weekend.

This is a real good get since this is not one of Wanny’s better classes — but there are a few gems to go along with the current strong sophome and freshmen class.

WVU is crushin Gtown — it won’t be easy on Sunday!

Comment by w bill 01.22.09 @ 9:02 pm

dan mason to pitt, big for two reasons we needed another linebacker and he was down to us or wvu good to see him choose pitt

Comment by vontegocummings 01.22.09 @ 9:03 pm

I was at the Steeler game on Sunday, half in the bag, and I must have yelled “Ed Reed loves c—” about 147 times.

I guess my point is that both cursing and watching sporting events are more fun when you’re drunk.

Comment by Jeff 01.22.09 @ 9:10 pm

As long as we don’t say “You F’in hit a girl”, then I am fine with it. I agree, no need to curse but I have a sister, a wife and a mother and I absolutely want Devendorf to know that what he did makes me sick. Curse words should have no place in chants BUT, “You hit a girl”? … what is wrong with the truth?

I sucked it up when Fields got the “Taser” chants last year because Levance was an idiot…still love him though. It doesn’t matter if Fields or the Cop was in the wrong, Levance should have never been there, end of story. Just like Devendorf should never ever do something like that. Where I come from, I am going to let you have it and you’re going to take it like a “Man”. If the culprit is going to miss shots horribly, I, as a fan, will leave my “class” at home where it’s just me and my wife.

Comment by Panthoor 01.22.09 @ 9:11 pm

Any questions?

Comment by baudolino 01.22.09 @ 9:17 pm

I agree that this one wasn’t bad when compared to other chants. I totally hear that. I guess I was making more or a broad sweeping statement regarding personal, non-basketball rated harassment by the crowed.

Comment by Keith W. 01.22.09 @ 9:18 pm

The post above doesn’t make sense without the picture. Seems like html code is stripped. Anyway, look at this beauty:

I think the subtitle is hilarious

“Devendorf Does Some Good”

Comment by w bill 01.22.09 @ 9:23 pm

Call me old fashioned, but I don’t even like the Zoo doing the “SUCKS” thing when the opposing team is introduced. It’s such a classless word. I’d even be OK with “STINKS” instead..

Comment by Bobby 01.22.09 @ 9:30 pm

Pardon my slight rant, but here’s my take on the Zoo and our chants. It is true that at many NFL (and, as a Flyers fan in Pittsburgh, NHL arenas), it is very common to hear “Fuck (insert team here)” or “eat shit, Pitt” or other such chants. I admit it’s only been two years that I have been at Pitt but I have never heard the Zoo use a four-letter word. People have tried, but the majority of the Zoo will not go into Carlin 7-word territory. As far as some chants…yes, we are a COLLEGE student section made up of COLLEGE KIDS. We can’t just chant “you’re not very good”…it seems lame and makes us feel a bit silly. The point of the Zoo is to get into the other team’s head a little bit while supporting our own team, not to clap politely whenever the Panthers do something good. Be proud that we don’t have fans interrupting the game (Providence) or tackling opposing players (Clemson), that we do not personally attack any player for being gay or insulting their parents or hometown because we feel like it. Devendorf hit a girl, period, and he should be reminded of it. When he shoots the airball, that only makes it sweeter for the fans.

Comment by merlin 01.22.09 @ 10:53 pm

Perhaps they should just stick to chanting ‘bullshit’ instead like happens at every other sporting event. These are college kids and honestly, the fact every chant is not riddled with profanity is somewhat amazing. This isn’t church.

Comment by Joey D 01.22.09 @ 11:25 pm

Again – what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander. If Larry Fitzgerald visits a PITT BB game are you going to chant the same thing? Of course not, so spare me the “He needs to be reminded” bit. If someone “needs to be reminded” of their transgressions do it across the board…

I’m no model citizen – as a matter of fact I swear like the sailor I am. However, I’m very cognizant of where and when I do it. What passes for appropriate language on the deck of a ship isn’t tolerable at our family dinner table – or, IMO, screaming at the top of my lungs in public.

With that, I totally understand that attending a sporting event isn’t church – although since I haven’t been in church for thirty years it may be, but I just don’t know.

However, attending a sporting event is supposed to be a pleasant experience for ALL involved. Believe it or not – the game does not revolve around a select group of people, no matter how great the Zoo is to have at games. Actually I think the Zoo is rather moderate in its behavior – certainly compared to some other schools student sections.

So my post above was more broadly meant.

Comment by Reed 01.23.09 @ 4:34 am

My kids have been to Pirates games, hoops games, and Pitt football games. I will never, ever, ever, take them to a Steelers game. It’s too hostile and WAY too obnoxious.

Comment by KeyboardKev 01.23.09 @ 7:21 am

reed, why would we say that chant to fitz if he came to a pitt hoops games? He is not on the court playing the game, so the chant has not relavance. You can not make all 13,000 fans happy, keep up the work zoo.

Comment by mike 01.23.09 @ 8:51 am

On the topic of zoo gimmicks, the one I absolutely loved was the wild animal noises while an opponent was shooting foul shots. It sounded like a fuckin jungle on my TV. Maybe the zoo can find some animal noisemakers like some duck calls and some cricket noisemakers to pass out to magnify the effect. That was an awesome gimmick.

Frankly, I don’t care what the zoo chants, but they should never be able to use these 7 words: Sh*t, P*ss, F*ck, C*nt, C*cksucker, Motherf*cker, and T*ts. If they say any of those words.. then my Vchip switches off my set.

Comment by ChrisA 01.23.09 @ 1:01 pm

One thing I never understood about the famed 7 words, is why piss and tits are grouped in there with such whoppers as “c*nt, c*cksucker and motherf*cker”. Now THEM’S some curse words.

Comment by Dan35 01.23.09 @ 1:13 pm

I think that there are many older people like myself who are upset with the degradation of the mores of our country. When we were in college, I just don’t think that the student body would have shouted anything at a game that would be considered obscene. Equally sad to me is that what was considered obscene back then is now mainstream. Listen what is said and shown on network TV. Go to a movie. Invariably, boy meets girl in a bar. They leave the bar. Girl takes boy home, immediately undresses him and copulates with him. Boy goes home and says, “Hey Mom. I think that I just found the girl I want to marry. Obviously, I’m looking at a bigger issue than chants from the student section.

I would prefer that the barometer for determining what should be chanted would be “Does it show class?” and not “Is it funny?”

Comment by BigGuy 01.23.09 @ 1:51 pm

Well, well, well. Very interesting reading on this forum. First, so we’re clear, I am an SU fan. My only reason for posting here is to clear up a glaring misconception that has direct bearing on this discussion. The facts of the Devendorf are as follows: Eric Devendorf was initially suspended by a judicial board made up of 5 students who were following the book which said that a student who is involved in a violation while already on probation will be automatically suspended. Mr. Devendorfs appeal was to a judicial board made up of Faculty, administration, (and I believe student representatives.) That board decided that the pusishment did not fit the crime, as it was proven that there was NOT a physical confrontation, but an entirely VERBAL confrontation. All of the above is fact and is information that is easily available through the simplest of internet research. You are welcome to do your own research and come to your own conclusions, of course, but it would seem to me that students of such a fine academic institution of higher education as yours would at least get their facts right

Comment by John Wallace 01.23.09 @ 6:41 pm

Fact: Devo did not hit the girl. He pushed her away from his face with an open palm.

but chant whatever – it’s a bball game!

And I gleefully joined in the “where’s my laptop?” chorus myself . . .

Comment by Romeo 227 01.24.09 @ 12:52 am

Ok, I’ll accept the Devendork didn’t actually hit a girl. But just don’t tell me that Hoopies don’t rape sheep.
