The Formula for No. 1

If No. 11 beats No. 2, No. 3 beats No. 11 and UR beats No. 1, what does No. 3 equal?

Down go the Tar Heels!

Pitt was ranked No. 3 going into the week.

No. 2 UConn fell to Georgetown . Than, Pitt knocked off the Hoyas.

Now, just seconds ago, the final variable fell into place.  The team most pundits have already given the National Title, No. 1 North Carolina,  fell at home, to our good friends the BC Eagles, 85-78.

Fan House already has a take on the game.

How they did it was pretty simple: BC was on fire from behind the arc and clamped down the Heels defensively. The Eagles also fought on the offensive glass and kept UNC from getting into their deadly transition game. That fact caused the normally poised Tar Heels to take frustration shots and make frustration fouls which fed the deficit.

I don’t see how anyone can’t pick Pitt to be No. 1.

The Panther’s have never been ranked No. 1 , and it will be interesting to see how the team will handle the bulls eye.

Pitt’s next game is Sunday at home against St. John’s (who beat ND this weekend).  The Red Storm  seem to have a knack for upsetting the Panther’s when they least expect it. You can bet the Pete will be buzzing a week from today.

NUMBER ONE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if Doug Gottlieb has us ranked in his poll.

ca’t take any BE games for granted but next key games will be on 1/17 at Louisville. They seem pretty unidisciplined today and need a PG badly. However, they will be fired up to beat a No.1 at home.

Bottom line, it is urealistic to expect team to remain No. 1 as we go thru BE schedule, but it is a very important milestone and can only help recruiting. Credit to Coach Dixon.

With the current talent and next year’s recruiting class, the future has never been brighter (not to mnetion the present!!)

Why do I feel like we just won a national championship? We’re #1 – We’re #1!!!

Comment by Maile Man 01.04.09 @ 8:32 pm

Pitt was ranked as high as #2 in the 06-07 for 3 weeks in late November to early December.

Pitt has NEVER been ranked #1 Ever in it’s history of basketball to my knowledge. What a treat it was to watch BC take em apart on their home court! Looked like they had a huge hangover from the holidays (a lot like Pitt/RU).

What a wonderful Sunday!

i remember when we were #3 undefeated and played SJU at the Garden when #1 and #2 lost the same day, and SJU pulled an upset and beat us. Really hope we wreck them next sunday.

Totally unexpected but awesome. Congrats Jamie Dixon and the guys. Great win for Pitt Women today too. Go Agnes!

What a great win for the program. I don’t know if anyone watched the UNC game, but is it just me, or does Hansborough charge every other time he touches the ball and get a blocking foul called against his opponent? Frankly, I think he looks a lot less impressive than he did last year, maybe watching himslef on SportCenter to much. Should be a great game if we meet the Tar Heels in March, but for now, WE’RE NUMBER 1!!!

#1 #1 #1 ,,, Man, Does that feel GREAT !!! Just keep it going and all will be fine !!!

Comment by Joe Pa 01.04.09 @ 9:50 pm

Haha, Ira, I was just thinking about that today. I remembered that game – if I remember correctly, Brandin Knight made like a half court shot at the end, but it was just after the buzzer.

And to think of it…It was the traitorous BC Eagles that got us there. I found myself watching that game thinking “No…I’ll NEVER root for those bastards after they left the Big East high and dry” but alas……..I love Skinner tonight. Pitt has never been #1 in hoops and we are tomorrow!

Hail to Pitt! What a great day to be a Pitt fan. Kudos to Jamie Dixon for building this program to where it is now!

Comment by Pauly P 01.04.09 @ 10:15 pm

na na na na na, we’re #1 !!!!!!!!

I’ve been so sick of hearing how great NC was this year – everyone on TV acted as if they were untouchable. Consider them touched and beaten like a rented mule! Congrats to Dixon, coaches and the team!!!

Comment by Dishman 01.04.09 @ 10:19 pm

I refuse to buy into all of the hype until Pitt actually plays somebody. The schedule has been cupcake city.

Comment by Brian 01.04.09 @ 10:32 pm

Hail to Pitt. The Pete will be electric on Sunday!!
Brian, Our RPI is 1. It may be early in the season, but that’s true for everyone and we are unbeaten with the top RPI. This is a great milestone for Pitt, but we all know what the real end game is and the ranking won’t be as meaningful if we don’t get to the promised land. In the meantime let’s enjoy the moment.

Panther:

I was using sarcasm.

Being No. 1 is a great way to ring in the new year.

Comment by Brian 01.04.09 @ 10:59 pm

#1!! FINALLY!!! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by matt 01.04.09 @ 11:13 pm

The formula for number one is money. With money you can buy all the best players and coach and be the number one.

Comment by Formula 1 Blog 01.05.09 @ 4:31 am

Formula 1,
????. So you think Pitt basketball is like the Yankees? Get a clue.

Comment by SC Steve 01.05.09 @ 7:34 am

THis is a great day. 2009 starts off perfectly. All the NC fans saying on Sat night that Pitt couldnt beat NC and BC beats them the next day.
What a great day for Basketball.

Comment by buzz 01.05.09 @ 9:10 am

I know rankings really mean nothing in college bball, especially early in the season but this is a great accomplishment for Coach Dixon and these guys that have worked so hard for some respect.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by RJ 01.05.09 @ 9:49 am

YES! YES! YES!

Comment by maz. 01.05.09 @ 11:10 am

WE CAN FINALLY SAY IT… WE’RE NUMBER 1!!!

True, it’s only rankings, but do you know what this will do for recruting. Number 1 ranking, Big East Championships and NCAA tournaments, this is a very big deal. It may not last lnog, but who cares!!!

I hope they still talk about those other teams too!!! Go ahead DOUG E. G. keep talking about how Pitt can compete with UNC, but they wouldn’t win. Dick Vitale gave us some respect, but even he threw in the… cupcake, cupcake, cupcake. Really, cupckaes? How come we have the 8th best SOS and our RPI is number 1? YES YES YES!!!
