This is where the bowl structure works against Pitt and several other schools. It’s about who puts seats in the stands. Not wins and losses or rankings.

No one should be counting on the Big East heading to the Gator Bowl, period. With ND out of that, the Gator still has the right to take a Big 12 team. That means, assuming Nebraska wins this week, they and their well traveling horde will get the nod.

The Sun Bowl may have to invite a BE team, provided Rutgers gets to 7 wins. If the Scarlet Knights gag against L-ville then the Sun Bowl can and will grab a 6-6 ND team.

That leaves the Meineke Bowl, PapaJohns.com Bowl, International Bowl and St. Petersburg Bowl. There will be at least 4 teams (excluding Cinci) with 7 wins or more — but no more than 9. With the non-BCS bowls as long as the teams are within a couple wins of a team there is flexibility in who a bowl picks.

Meineke is the biggest and gets the first choice.

Meineke: The folks in Charlotte are going to take West Virginia unless the Mountaineers get routed by Pittsburgh and fall to Louisville and USF. In a bad economy, the ticket allure is just too big. The backup plan is Rutgers, but that might be difficult politically.

Papajohns.com:
Rutgers or Pittsburgh. One of these teams may have to play outside the Big East tie-ins. See below.

International: UConn. Book it.

Now in other stories, it is also factored that if Meineke gets UNC from the ACC rather than Virginia Tech or BC, then Pitt would stand an excellent chance of getting picked for it.

USF is a lock for the St. Pete’s bowl after last night.

Frankly, I’m sure I’ve made a mistake somewhere along the line because this crap is so convoluted and subject to changes and much more, so this could be completely wrong.

Rutgers is the only team still trying to clinch an absolute lock bowl bid.

The point is, as long as Pitt wins there is less of this crap to be concerned.

Eh, for me it’s BCS, Gator, or bust when it comes to bowls. When you get down to the scrub bowls, ie: papajohns.com/meineke/international…does it really matter which one you’re playing in? Personally, I’d love to see them play in the International Bowl in Toronto. It’s a very managable trip and Toronto is my favorite city to visit. Gotta love the “cafe’s” there! 🙂

So…I’ll be holding out a slim bit of hope for the International bowl, since I could care less what scrub bowl we play in.

international bowl would get the biggest amount of fans via the student section. It is the most reasonable trip of all the bowls, plus an overwhelming majority of us can legally drink and tailgate. What student doesn’t want to go to Canada.

Sometimes being a PITT fan really is unfair. I dont like to play the victum all the time but we as fans need to start doing what other schools such like get off your asses and buy bowl tickets. I know we have the Steelers here but come on its freaking college football. There are so many fair weathered and bandwagon riders who follow PITT its unbeleivable. Where are you when were going to a bowl game. Your also the same people who only like PITT hoops and Penn State football. Usually thoses people are also the same iggnorant people that dont have any apperication for student athletets, and have never starped up a helment, and if they did you know they quit too. You other PITT fans know who im talking about here. Its time for real PITT fans to commit more passointatley. If not the drive bys on ESPN, Fox Sports and NY Times will continue to knock us and take the biased shots they take at us and the Big East. Im so sick of hearing about that fucking school in central PA that the only reason why their good in fotball histroy is because of PITT. We have more national titles then they do but yet the national media praises them like there college football, and the greatest team ever assembled ever with that old man named Joe looking on like he has the anwsers when he has done nothing for at least seven years when we beat them.

I know im planning a trip some where in this great land to watch my alma matar and I hope all of you true PITT fans and Pittsburger’s should consider coming along!

Lets Go PITT, beat WVU!

Lou,

I think the main problem is geographics. For students on christmas break, no big deal going to arizona/florida/wherever to go see a game. But for those of us who are out in the working world, it’s tough to get mid-week time off to fly/drive hundreds of miles to watch the team play another mid-tier program. If they don’t play in Toronto, odds are I’ll be watching the game on TV.

I’d love the Sun Bowl
lets win out

Times are tough but we need to start supporting Pitt in bowl games or we are always going to have these issues. I am in for Charlotte and anywhere in Florida

Why did Pitt give back 1700 tickets to Cincinnati and sell only 1300? That does not bode well for a bowl game. If you go back the Car Care bowl with Harris as coach, Pitt fans were upset to be playing in a lesser bowl and really hacked off the bowl sponsors. Then in our only BCS appearance, fans were waiting for the supposed miracle worker Wannstedt to take over so few Pitt fans made the trip to the desert. This attitude coupled with a Big East Conference that is still so much more a basketball leangue makes our lower tier bowls worse than Conference USA’s. When are we going to have a 10-team football league? Pardon me for looking backwards, but why did Tranghese ever invite DePaul & Marquette to join when he should have invited two schools with football teams – Memphis & ?? – and therby lock up the Liberty Bowl. I went to the ’97 Liberty Bowl game and Memphis was a great time.

I don’t think we can take on the attitude of BCS/Gator Bowl or bust. A bowl game is a big accomplishment for this group of seniors, Coach Wanny and the program. I know it can be tough to swallow since we were all thinking BCS until this past weekend, but its a stepping stone for the program and going to any bowl and performing well against an ACC foe or whoever would be great for this program.

So I know we’re all still a little deflated after the loss to Cinci, but any bowl game presents a tremendous opportunity for this particular team and the future of the program.

I will be happy with a bowl appearance but of course would prefer Sun/Gator bowl. As for the comments about attending the bowl game, I would absolutely love to go to the game. Hopefully there is a deal that makes it affordable enough to go.
But first things first….this Friday is another big game for us. We need to put on a show while in the national spotlight again this week. It’s always a great game but I have a feeling that the mountainqueers will be coming out with some revenge on their minds. We shouldn’t need motivated to play this rivalry game, but I am hoping we don’t look as flat as we did the other day.
Hope to see a lot of you at the game. Hail to Pitt.

TJ agree wholeheartedly. Just think of that extra month of practice for the younger guys. It makes a big difference. Not making a bowl game has severe negative effects on a team from not only a recruiting standpoint, but also practice time. With that being said, I still hold out hope for a trip to the Gator Bowl. I for one will try to make it. I was at the ’97 Liberty Bowl and it was an incredible time (other than the loss).

Comment by Pidoublet 11.24.08 @ 9:13 pm

I believe that ND must beat USC to go to the Sun Bowl – (assumung Gator chooses Big 12) then BE goes to the Sun. Paul Zeise wrote about it

There is an NCAA rule that no 6-6 bowl team can fill a slot when a team in an affiliated conference has 7 wins.

Go Pitt!

Not all of us were talking BCS before this past weekend. I knew we would end up in one of the tiny bowls. I have no faith that Wannstedt will get us to a huge bowl game. I love the guy personally and I don’t want him fired, or anything like that, but he has never showed anything to suggest that he is at New Year’s Day level. His teams never show up when there is a lot on the line.

Let’s start with the small things when it comes to Pitt fans traveling to games…Let’s get them to travel to Heinz Field for more than one or two game a year! Between this year and last, DW’s teams have defeated the #2 team and the #10 team on the road, as well as the #17 team at home. The players are becoming more confident, showing more fight, and will become more consistent. This team will challenge for the BE Championship and the BCS Bowl for the next several years.
