Homecoming Open Thread, Rutgers-Pitt

Filed under: Football, Open Thread — Chas @ 2:52 pm

Okay, time-delayed. For those stuck with ESPN360.com, the extra misery is it is my understanding that with broadband only there is a good chance that it is without any announcers. Let me know if that’s the case.

In any case, the floor is open.

My ISP doesn’t support espn360. Is there any way to see it online?

Comment by dave87 10.25.08 @ 3:13 pm

yes someone please post a stream!!!

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 3:27 pm

I am watching this game from some I know’s office in their house where they have 360.

It just keeps saying “Coming up next: Rutgers at Pittsburgh”.

Ummm…. it’s 3:30… shouldn’t it be playing right now?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:33 pm

ya shady just had a td lol

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 3:34 pm

Conredge Collins w/ 2 nice receptions and Shady w/ a long TD run. 3 plays, TD.

Crappy announcers, no yellow line for 1st down, no down and distance displayed.

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 3:35 pm

Anyone have a link to an online radio broadcast? I have freaking comcast thus no 360.

Comment by Dave 10.25.08 @ 3:35 pm

better than not being able to watch it at all like me

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 3:36 pm

Now it says “live”, but I have a fucking black screen. This 360 thing is great!!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:36 pm

What in the fuck!!! I missed a TD!!!!

I’m just getting a blank screen on this piece of shit!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:37 pm

Whoa…major blown coverage

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 3:39 pm

360 is fucked for me too.

http://www.fox970.com has it.

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 3:40 pm

Is this Panthers All-Access thing audio only?

Comment by Kevin 10.25.08 @ 3:41 pm

Is this Panthers All-Access thing audio only?

Yes

Comment by steve 10.25.08 @ 3:42 pm

ESPN 360, simply does not work.

The media player comes up, it shows all of the games available, and then I get a black screen.

That should be their motto: “ESPN 360: Even when you find someone that has us, it probably won’t work anyways.”

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:43 pm

Thanks Steve. Glad I didn’t spend the $8.

Comment by Kevin 10.25.08 @ 3:45 pm

Thanks for the fox 970 link, better than nothing.

Comment by Dave 10.25.08 @ 3:45 pm

Ok, other games are working now, just not Pitt v. Rutgers.

This is really pissing me off, you don’t even know.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:45 pm

I’ve got Michigan State v. Michigan, UCLA v. Cal, and even a fucking replay of the Boise State game to work on there…

…. BUT NOT PITT VS. RUTGERS!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:47 pm

Jimbo Covert’s My Dad — let me know if Pitt actually works, I’ll log back in through Pitt’s VPN. (Oh yeah, if you have a Pitt ID or at least, access to one, you can get ESPN360 through sslvpn.pitt.edu — but it only helps if 360 is actually working.)

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 3:47 pm

I’m sure ESPN360 is overloaded.

Comment by steve 10.25.08 @ 3:47 pm

local blackout :)

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 3:48 pm

oski wawa? Bill’s outta control.

Comment by steve 10.25.08 @ 3:50 pm

O threw two flanker screens that went nowhere…other than an offsides penalty for a first down, slow second time with ball..

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 3:51 pm

Sounds like an angry game

Comment by steve 10.25.08 @ 3:52 pm

Berry nice INT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 3:52 pm

Here’s the deal now.

The first game that pops up when I click on it works fine.

But when I try to select another game, the thing goes to shit.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:53 pm

bad fake punt but glad to see them open the playbook

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 3:55 pm

http://www.justin.tv/sportsbroadcasting

this should work, even on Comcast.

Comment by Mac 10.25.08 @ 3:56 pm

Really, a fake FG? Good lord.

Comment by Dave 10.25.08 @ 3:56 pm

WTF was that?

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 3:57 pm

WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? And who is Andrew Janocko?

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 3:57 pm

Pitt tried a fake FG and Rutgers was waiting for it. Had no chance.

Comment by Jon C 10.25.08 @ 3:58 pm

Wow… Nice D :-(

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 3:58 pm

Fake FG goes awry…

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 3:58 pm

I can’t find the game. Radio it is I suppose. Has anything worth noting happened?

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 3:58 pm

Really? Rutgers is passing? Who would’ve thought?

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 3:59 pm

What the hell? Came back from commercial and a Rutgers TD? 79 yards?

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 3:59 pm

Worth noting? Would two 50+ yard TD passes for Mike Teel be notable?

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 3:59 pm

And I can’t see the game, but I see that we’re losing by 7 now. Great.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 3:59 pm

Mac… That link gave me the NC State game. Thanks, though.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:00 pm

Ugly D..14-7

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:00 pm

Wow, its on that justin tv link…well done.

Comment by Dave 10.25.08 @ 4:01 pm

I will work - they turned it off during the commercial. Go try it again. It’s not perfect, but Pitt game is their main game.

Comment by Mac 10.25.08 @ 4:01 pm

Wanny = Greg Schiano’s bitch.

For the record, I’ve been a fan of Greg Schiano’s since he was DC at Miami under disciplinarian Butch Davis.

Comment by Joshua 10.25.08 @ 4:02 pm

excuse me, “it” will work.

http://www.justin.tv/sportsbroadcasting

Comment by Mac 10.25.08 @ 4:02 pm

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:03 pm

omg thanks for the link mac

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 4:03 pm

Well, I drove out here to see the game, that’s now happening, and now we’re losing to Rutgers and just missed a field goal.

I’m going home.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:04 pm

thank mehinpgh from pantherlair.com - found it there.

Comment by Mac 10.25.08 @ 4:04 pm

Missed FG by Lee…don’t see many of those.

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 4:05 pm

Well Maz, I got home late so I asked what was up. No need to get angry bud.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 4:06 pm

Lee hits the upright!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:06 pm

D playing back on coverage..a bit too deep.

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:08 pm

Not angry at you, angry at the game, sorry Panthoor.

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 4:08 pm

No prob. I’m listening to it now and I don’t blame you.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 4:10 pm

We’re right now a bit out of synch…O moving but then bogging down..D playing soft, unless blitzing….need to get back in control of this game.

Hail to PITT!
-al-

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:12 pm

Wow. We’re getting dominated in all three phases of the game. Didn’t see this coming. Better make some adjustments. Soon…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:12 pm

Teel is 6-8 for 201, 2 TD and an Int. Aren’t you glad Navy threw only 8 passes?

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 4:14 pm

Need to hold them to a field goal at most here.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:15 pm

21-7.

But that’s ok, fellas! We’re 5-1!!!!

Comment by Joshua 10.25.08 @ 4:15 pm

Ha. Maybe not. This is disheartening.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:16 pm

blocked xp 20-7

Comment by pitpanther01 10.25.08 @ 4:18 pm

OK, 20-7, but the way Pitt is playing, what does it matter whether it’s 20 or 21?

Comment by Joshua 10.25.08 @ 4:18 pm

we need to score on our next drive… otherwise it could be ugly.

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:18 pm

Hey. Blocked XP. Way to go. Maybe that will ignite us…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:19 pm

Shades of 2006, anyone? Remember how we were all excited to be bowl-eligible, until we were shut out of ALL the bowls?

Comment by Joshua 10.25.08 @ 4:20 pm

Good, blocked XP…time to change the course of this game!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:21 pm

Baldwin… Nice!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:22 pm

Then McCoy. Big-time players making big-time plays.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:23 pm

Holy balls …as my dear and sainted mother used to say!!!!!!

Comment by FatsythebigMick 10.25.08 @ 4:23 pm

Terrible, TERRIBLE throw. Awesome catch by Baldwin. And these announcers are retarded.

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 4:23 pm

and SHADY with a TD

Comment by matt 10.25.08 @ 4:24 pm

TD Shady..nice, very good. Now lets play some D.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 4:24 pm

Listen online on 970 AM.

Comment by FatsythebigMick 10.25.08 @ 4:25 pm

Glad I didn’t bet the under

Comment by steve 10.25.08 @ 4:25 pm

Baldwin and Shady!

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:26 pm

we need to get a rush going.. and figure out that pass.

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:26 pm

These guys are sleep walking.

Comment by FatsythebigMick 10.25.08 @ 4:26 pm

http://www.justin.tv/sportsbroadcasting

Poor quality but better than nothing.

Comment by Mac 10.25.08 @ 4:26 pm

Good time for a Rutgers turn over.

Comment by FatsythebigMick 10.25.08 @ 4:28 pm

Our defensive effort is pretty weak. We need to get to Teel.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:28 pm

Did our Dline go out drinking last night?

Comment by Jon C 10.25.08 @ 4:30 pm

Unbelievable…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:31 pm

Listening on radio. Is Fields in the game? If not, put him in. He couldn’t do any worse…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:32 pm

we suck fire everybody now

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:32 pm

Did not attend this game after having many folks down for the Navy Game. Typical Pitt, getting caught looking ahead to ND. Thanks so much for the streaming site. I have watched Thatcher and Berry all year get beat on fakes looking into the backfield. Wondered when some team would figure out Pitt’s largest weakness…Guess RU has!!!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 4:35 pm

nice play now punch it in

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:35 pm

td shady, now get a stop!

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:36 pm

Well it is obvious that both teams have secondary’s with the shits today.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 4:37 pm

Enjoy Shady while you can. If he keeps playing like this, he’ll be leaving early.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:37 pm

man.. need to keep it close.. at least till half time so bennett can pound some sense in the secondary. We need some sort of adjustments…

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 4:39 pm

absolutely now pass coverage, awful

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:41 pm

Well, the justin.tv thing is better than ESPN 360, which doesn’t work at all.

Ok, now why is this poor offense going up and done the field?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:42 pm

now they can run all they want too

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:43 pm

uncatchable

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:43 pm

This defense is being SHREDDED by a terrible QB.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:44 pm

another td

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:45 pm

More like “unwatchable” as in “this defense is unwatchable”.

I say this again but, Rutgers offense has been fucking TERRIBLE all year.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:46 pm

This might be Teel’s best game ever, and that is a mouthful because he isn’t very good.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 4:47 pm

if we dont win, i hope we give up 100

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:47 pm

So we stop USF, stop Navy…. and procede to give up 34 in one half to fucking Rutgers…. FUCKING RUTGERS!!!!!!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:48 pm

Great, we all get to watch Bill Stull play from behind too!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:49 pm

Hmmmm… Maybe’ Bennett’s 18-48 record with SMU was a sign. Make an adjustment. Make a play. Somebody do something on defense. Please…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:49 pm

score a td, get a stop, score a td again and regroup at halftime

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:50 pm

defene is busy running into each other…state of total confusion…I know DW hates the blitz but cmon….do some freaking thin!!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 4:50 pm

we struggle with home games

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:51 pm

If I had come back for this for Homecoming, I’d kill myself.

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 4:51 pm

kinder drops it, rutgers doesnt

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:52 pm

can stull throw a spiral? is our defense at the game? teel??

Comment by poostull 10.25.08 @ 4:52 pm

Our best defense may be our offense. Perhaps running Shady and LSH until their legs fall off will keep Teel off the field…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:53 pm

Go for it…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 4:56 pm

GO FOR IT!!!!! collins up the middle

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:57 pm

The over/under on this game is 43 points. Unless you think Pitt is going to put up somewhere in the 30s against Rutgers, the under seems more appealing.

Thanks for the advise Chas…

Comment by Todd Gack 10.25.08 @ 4:58 pm

what a terrible call fire everyone already, conservative bull crap, down 17 at the half, perfect

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 4:58 pm

Down, at home against an inferior opponent, marching towards the end zone, and Wanny kicks a field goal.

Bowling Green all over again.

We’re regressing.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 4:59 pm

Lost in all this is the fact that Stull has 230 yards passing in the first half.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:00 pm

Mike Teel doing his best Bruce Gradkowski impression….

Comment by Ryan M. 10.25.08 @ 5:00 pm

Playing with fire calling that timeout.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:01 pm

Tony settle down man. You are acting like we are the Bengals. Yes our defense is doing badly today but they have shown that they can be a solid group. Let’s wait and see what we do in terms of adjustments before we sling poo at them today.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:02 pm

Anybody have any clue what attendance is today?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:02 pm

down 10 at the half.. it could be much worse. Uggh… lets see what wanny and benett do. (if they can)

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:04 pm

we never make good adjustments, 34 points is inexcusable, ive seen too many underachieving pitt teams

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:04 pm

defense is playing like poopie..we gotta get the shit outta our pants liek Joe Pa

Comment by poostull 10.25.08 @ 5:06 pm

there is hope though, well see, im ready for the second half already

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:06 pm

I agree that 34 points is ridiculous. On a brighter note though, we have countered. If our defense steps up and our offense continues to perform well then we can win this game.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:07 pm

1st half mistakes: defense in general, fake fg (shouldve gone for it straight up), lee of the upright was unlucky, shouldve gone for it at the end of the half. we need the d to regroup and our o to cash in at the end of drives. thats potentially 17 points off the board on 3 bad plays. we need to get pressure quickly on teel

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:11 pm

Well, this is when the coaches earn their pay…time to put pressure on Teel, and not give him time. He’s had plenty of time, and is rolling with a good pocket.

On offense, keep it varied, and mix it up!

This game is very winnable!

Hail to PITT!
-al-

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:11 pm

oh i know we can win this game but it is embarassing to perform like this. i just wonder what tbe coaches are thinking sometimes. lets hope they have a good plan. wannstedt was dumb for playing bostick no matter what anyone says but thats over with, we have to change something and win this game. too many headscratchers with wannstedt is all im saying, i dont understand him

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:16 pm

Wann7y has to get out of this “read and react D with zone behind” and blitz, take chances and play man in the secondary…how much worse can it be! Berry and Thatcher are getting toasted!!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 5:21 pm

Ok, the chat room on the side of Justin.tv is annoying. It’s just little kids arguing about their favorite teams.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:28 pm

lets go, 3 and out right now

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:29 pm

OH MY GOD WE STOPPED THEIR PASSING GAME!!!

(Yeah, granted, it was on one play, first-and-ten, but still!!)

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 5:29 pm

Sack. That’s what I’m talking about!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:29 pm

YES! SACK! SHEARD!

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 5:29 pm

good stop now score a td

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:30 pm

One good thing about having to listen to the game online today: I remembered how good Bill Hillgrove is at what he does.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:30 pm

There we go. That sack is refreshing.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:31 pm

hopefully Rutgers lines get a litte worn out.. and our conditioning kicks in again like iowa and usf. Come on D lets get somthing rolling…opening drive is a big one.

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:32 pm

is justin.tv at least a minute behind for everybody else, its really flashy and lags a lot for me so im just stickin with fox970.com audio

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:35 pm

Agreed Jimbo Covert’s My Dad…I’ve opted for Hillgrove instead of justintv for exactly that reason. He’s the greatest.

Also, TOUCHDOWN BALDWIN!

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 5:35 pm

Baldwin!

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:37 pm

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:37 pm

Shady. Four TDs!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:40 pm

Ok, there’s the TD.

Now we need a stop worse than just about anything on earth right now.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:41 pm

TD. Let’s go Defense!

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:41 pm

To the best of my knowledge, Javon Ringer of MSU leads the nation with 15 rushing TDs, counting the one today. I bring it up because Shady has 14.

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 5:44 pm

lets go d, 3 and out again, sack for duncan, sheard!

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:45 pm

Wow. Another sack! What’s going on here?

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:45 pm

Three and out!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:46 pm

yes, lets score another td

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:47 pm

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:47 pm

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:49 pm

I have sooo had it with Berry…all year he has been very shaky back there..he is barely adequate on D….UGLY….He is going to cost us a game….Now a TD….thanks berry….looks like that game is today!!!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 5:49 pm

another terrible loss to be, pitt kills me

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:49 pm

Berry is not very good at this job. This is the last game he returns punts.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:49 pm

damnit berry….that cost us the game..

Comment by poostull 10.25.08 @ 5:50 pm

agreed.. but howlings back there.

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:51 pm

has he ever returned a punt for more than 10 yards?

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:51 pm

Signs that it isn’t your day: We start kicking ass, and the fucking punt returner let’s them right back in and STEALS momentum away from his own team.

Wow, there is smoke coming off of my head right now.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:52 pm

that is shameful. berry is the anti-playmaker.

Comment by christopher 10.25.08 @ 5:52 pm

well im done with this, but ill be listening to the game, lets go pitt!

Comment by Tony 10.25.08 @ 5:53 pm

that was crushing, you can just feel the disappointment in the crowd over the radio… i’m sure this will be a 3 and out on our part.

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 10.25.08 @ 5:53 pm

wow..not going how we expected, fumble and another TD Teel pass…all we can do now is Win….need another strong O drive!

Hail to PITT!
-al-

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 5:54 pm

That fumble basically just turned the entire game back in their favor.

Defense goes back to shit, offense gets unorganized, and now Bill Stull is hurt.

This isn’t the type of game Pitt wins.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 5:54 pm

Wonderful. Stull is hurt…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 5:54 pm

Good thing Bostick practiced handing off and taking knees, that will help is down 10.

Comment by maz. 10.25.08 @ 5:55 pm

Oh God. Stull is hurt? I hope the kid is OK.

Comment by Panthoor 10.25.08 @ 5:56 pm

Fox 970 just said Stull was knocked out cold?

Comment by FourSnow 10.25.08 @ 5:56 pm

Wow, I went from sure we were winning to ready to turn off the game and get something to eat and forget today ever happened in the span of 5 minutes.

I don’t know whether it’s youth, a lack of character of lack of coaching poise…or maybe all three….but Pitt get’s a bad break and just totally falls apart….where were the mousetraps this week DW? Gee, when were Pitt fans this excited…let’s see .that was before the BG game.
This could be a real season ruiner. Anyone remember the last time when we were 5-1? We are in BIG TROUBLE!~

Hope Stull is OK….he is a warrior….

But you have to believe that Berry’s fucking fumbled punt set about the turn of events that have led us to where we are now. It was just an inexcusable mistake at the worst possible time.

And to make us all feel worse I must remind everyone that Rutgers is not a good team.

Pitt’s discipline (and I use that word loosely) has broken down many times today. But to have RU line up unbalanced and pull a guard for a TD w. NO adjustment at all by Pitt is just plain poor coaching!

Now, they run a flare out of the backfield on 3rd down and NO one covers at all.

We’ve had worse days….but not many

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 6:38 pm

start of the season vs BG. Ranked, everyone is excited about the program: we lose

rutgers game: ranked, everyone is excited about the program…we lose

There is NO EXCUSE for having the 115th ranked offense put up 48 on you on your home field. And just imagine how shaky Bostic would have looked if they didnt put him in for 3 snaps last week.

Comment by matt in orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:38 pm

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

what a freaking joke. I cant even describe the bitter disappointment I feel about this team. WE SUCK. How do you let a QB throw for 370 yards on 15 complete passes for 6 td’s? How is that even possible? That is even hard to do in Madden. I cant take this anymore, please put me out of my misery.

Comment by dan 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

it seems like wanny doesn’t want to let the fans (the fair weather ones) get behind this team. anytime there is some excitement that starts to stir interest… this shit happens. 54 points to rutgers is unbelievable, and incredibly depressing.

Cavanaugh did his job with 34 points. The defensive genius wanny crapped his pants again.

Comment by pitt fan 10.25.08 @ 6:50 pm

Rutgers will be 2-2. Not 2-0 Mr. Hillgrove…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:54 pm

Rutgers played way over their heads on offense today.

I did not expect that at all…. that was worse than the Navy game last year. 54 fucking points.

Rutgers usually has trouble hitting 20 points!! We had the best ranked defense in the conference.

How the hell did this happen? Off day? We’re overrated? I don’t know. I’m pretty sure it was an off day for the defense, but THAT bad… against fucking Rutgers?!?!?!

That was just inexcusable.

And the 2nd half screwups when we were right back in the game? We were moments away from overcoming a disastrous first half when Aaron Berry just killed everything we had. That just killed me.

Then Stull got hurt, and we aren’t coming back on anybody with Bostick in there.

And the way we responded to adversity on defense was absolutely disgusting.

The Steelers could blow out the Giants by 60 tomorrow, but I’m still going to be sick over this one for a long time.

By the way, USF and Cincy lost today. There goes our chance to distance ourselves from the Big East pack a little bit.

The Big East seems to be a conference full of mediocre teams, and every time one of them gets on a roll, another crappy Big East team comes and knocks them off.

I thought we’d break the trend and rise above that. Wow, was I wrong.

We can still win the conference, but at this point that would be like winning the smartest retard contest (no offense to anyone, I have a mentally handicapped relative, but I just couldn’t think of any other way to put that).

Sorry, I’m just rambling here, but that was awfull. Just a HUGE step back after playing two great games recently.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 6:56 pm

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.25.08 @ 6:58 pm

Not the coaches fault. We got beat by an outstanding performance by Rutgers……..WTF, that was RUTGERS…..Somebody needs to get fired. And no more game changing punt returns by Berry. There must be another option. I just hope Stull is ok.

Comment by bombersunshine 10.25.08 @ 6:58 pm

Well, the offense showed up, the defense, not so much…. How does Shady run for over 100 AGAIN with 4 TDs and we still lose?

Comment by Dugdog 10.25.08 @ 7:06 pm

Well, heading into this year, Rutgers was supposed to have what many felt were the best QB-WR connections in Big East, with Teel, Britt, Underwood and Brown coming back. So I don’t know if this was Rutgers underachieving all year and waking up today, or Rutgers just playing way over their heads thanks to an absolute career day by Teel. Or maybe this was Schiano taking advantage of the weak spot on our defense - the defensive backfield, especially on play-action fakes.

Berry = just beyond awful. He’s not even good enough a DB to justify the mistakes he made on special teams. I’d like to think a change is made back there for the ND game…Aundre Wright, Stephens-Howling…anybody but Berry.

Decicco really needs to learn his reads a little better. I know the kid is a true soph., but wow. I like the kid a lot and I think he’s going to be a great player, but If he’s going to consistently bite on play fakes, get him out of there and let Fields play a little bit.

I think we’ll be able to rebound from this. I can’t imagine this defense playing this poorly the rest of the year. What worries me about heading into Notre Dame is that they are also capable of exploiting the defensive backs the same way Teel and Co. did today.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 7:08 pm

Other than the one ill-advised throw where Bostick was hit, resulting in an int., Bostick didn’t look too bad.

Comment by Dugdog 10.25.08 @ 7:08 pm

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 7:18 pm

Hauseer has a broken leg…out for the season.

Stull Ok, but shakey for next week.

Sorry to all Pitt fans for being so negative and disappointed but I am the king of Wanny watchers and even I was stunned by this poor performance.
I went to HS with him and followed him on his entire coaching career. The one thing I will say is that his exploits and coaching failures are inexplicable! Things seem to happen to him that never happen to another coach….and over and over etc. Was hoping that would change at Pitt.

Just so so disappointing, ugly, and unforseable!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 7:23 pm

We tore down Pitt Stadium for this? Everytime we get a head of steam we lose a big game at Heinz. Harris and Wanny both. Do we want an intimadating home field? Obviously not.

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.25.08 @ 7:28 pm

Glad to hear Stull is OK.

That really sucks about Hauser. That kid was doing a great job this year, too. Hopefully he gets healed up and can come back next year. I’m guessing that happened on the Bostick INT because that’s when he got carried off the field.

The Hauser injury worries me because this is the one o-line position where they were really short on depth. I’m not sure if they can move C.J. Davis to center and then put Jacobsen in Davis’s spot.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 7:38 pm

Same old Pitt.

Comment by Same Old Pitt 10.25.08 @ 8:02 pm

And right on cue as if there was a script…the season begins to crumble. An embarrassing loss and two key injuries. I see why Bostick is the #2 this year, they want him to graduate as soon as possible. He looked slow, awkward, and the usually wind up throwing motion. Tino is our next QB.

Aaron Berry was horrific, I would have made him take his uniform off and walk back to the campus after his fumble. He got beat all day long.

Same old pitt. Every time I think Im out they pull me back in.

Comment by Rex 10.25.08 @ 8:57 pm

Wonder what life would have been like with Saddler back returning punts this year. Darn injury bug…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 9:21 pm

Is there anyone out there who does not believe Pitt could go 0′ fer the remainder of the season?
ND will be very difficult, especially for a team like Pitt that makes so many mistakes and reacts so slowly (or not at all), Louisville at home is willable but tough, Cinncy is the most winnable game but at Cinncy, WVU is WVU and UConn is like Rutgers…we never seem to beat them there…

Who would’ve thunk it after last weeks Navy game??

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 9:35 pm

Dan 72,

I’m trying very, very hard not to think about that, although given the way we’ve played at home this year, maybe we need all the road games we can get. And the sad truth is that I’m only half-joking when I say that.

I’d feel a lot better if I knew we didn’t have the injuries to Hauser and Stull to deal with as well, but that’s football. Every team has injuries. UConn and Cincy are down to the third-string QBs, I think.

I didn’t expect Pitt to win every game from here on out, but I kind of expected them to win this one. As you mentioned, some of these games down the stretch are going to be tough enough to win. With this being a conference game and with Pitt’s relative standing to the rest of the conference heading in, I just expected a much more focused effort today.

Maybe this one was a bad matchup for Pitt, though. Schiano is a good coach and it looked to me like he gameplanned to exploit a weaknesses in Pitt’s defense on the deep pass. He wasted no time in attacking it, and he kept after it. It looked like it was by design right from the start. My guess is that he looked at some of the plays that Syracuse beat the Pitt DBs on, and he went right at it.

I watched some of the UConn-Cincy game today and both of those teams are sloppy. As I said, both teams are down to their third-string QB. Louisville is a decent team, but they’re not what they were in the past. They were helped out tremendously today by yet another patented South Florida Self-Destruction (14 penalties for more than 100 yards).

What bothered me today were some of the calls in Rutgers territory. The decision to kick a few FGs on fourth-and-one rather than just line up and go for it. The fake field goal. The call on third-and-one that led to Bostick’s INT (line it up and run it there, please…or at least don’t force Pat to make that throw across his body). Shades of the Bowling Green game.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 10:09 pm

This program is dead. Wannstedt must go.

Good luck and prayers to Bill Stull and Robb Hauser. Pity their bodies had to suffer for our retarded millionaire coach’s incompetence. Their parents should be seething.

Comment by geeman2001 10.25.08 @ 10:42 pm

Wannstedt didnt fumble the ball or blow coverage. Aaron Berry should not be allowed to dress the rest of the year - he was aweful to put it kindly.

I guess it is just time to accept that we are a mediocre team in a mediocre conference. Then to rub a little salt in the wound. Terrible Pryor hands the nit whits a win in Columbus. Now we will have to hear about that all week.

What a miserable weekend.

Comment by Rex 10.25.08 @ 11:25 pm

They should put a sign over Gate A “Abandon all hope ye who enter here”. Rutgers had two big fast receivers and virtually no running attack. Yet Wanny said before the game that Pitt really had to protect against the run first. When I heard that I thought uh-oh. Sure enough, we go single coverage, with defenders who are just a bit slower and smaller than their receivers. Throw in a few “what the …?” calls on offence (fake field goal, not pounding it on 3rd and a foot), a couple of turnovers, and we get blown out. We used 6 defensive backs almost exclusively against USF, but we can’t adjust to the obvious mismatch in the secondary after the nth time? Wannstedt looked very worried before the game - no smiles, not confident at all. He must subconsciously will a loss. The crowd was enthusiastic until mid-4th quarter.

Comment by 66Goat 10.25.08 @ 11:35 pm

Crowd was great for the first three quarters, actually. When we got the defensive stop that forced the punt, that was the loudest I’ve heard Heinz in a while. Berry’s fumble AND the TD ON THE VERY NEXT PLAY threw all that out the window. Two more key plays late: The Bostick pick was a horrible play call and decision by him to throw, and we sacked Teel on 3rd down but blantantly face masked him letting RUT keep the ball. Demoralizing. All those mistakes and we still had a good chance to win until Stull got hurt. I hoped we’d be motivated after that…it was emotional…but the opposite seemed to happen. It was dead once he was gone.

Comment by Brian 10.25.08 @ 11:56 pm

And I would have felt a lot better about it all if one TP could have not farted all over himself on that 3rd and 1 QB sneak. Go Iowa next week!

Comment by Brian 10.25.08 @ 11:57 pm

I agree with most of everyone’s points here. It was a devistating blow to the stomach and reminds us of how it feels to be high on Pitt only to be let down and kill all good will of the new Pitt fans. These games hurt most because these games draw big crowds and remind me of the feeling ND left me with last time we played them.

But Big Ben would have trouble throwing 6 touchdown passes to win this game. Our defense is the sole reason we lost this game and that can include the coaches. To say Bostick was expected to come off the bench into a shootout in the 2nd half of the 6th game of the season without throwing a single pass all year, and suddenly play his best is rediculous. He did fine for the situation and play calling he was given. Look how Stull played in his 1st game this year and he was more or less the Starter since the offseason. Give the guy a break. His throws had plenty of mustard on them compared to last year and he was responsible for keeping us in several games last year. People have very short memories. He got better as the season went and has some advantages over Stull, like Accuracy and timing. If Stull is unable to come back and play, Bostick is a capable candidate to lead the team. That being said…what happened to the Greg Cross experiment? They were going to play him when they needed to throw a rinkle in there. Then they said they never got a chance to use him in the last few games. Now we don’t see him at all. I guess his million yards a cary average are not cutting the mustard. Would a cross and McCoy combo not kept Rutgers offense off the field today if they went to that combo at times. Seems we have no consitant gameplan or direction. But the offensive execution and Bostick did nothing wrong today. Only the defense and coaching of the defense and offensive play calling were really a problem.
