Okay, time-delayed. For those stuck with ESPN360.com, the extra misery is it is my understanding that with broadband only there is a good chance that it is without any announcers. Let me know if that’s the case.

In any case, the floor is open.

Pitt’s discipline (and I use that word loosely) has broken down many times today. But to have RU line up unbalanced and pull a guard for a TD w. NO adjustment at all by Pitt is just plain poor coaching!

Now, they run a flare out of the backfield on 3rd down and NO one covers at all.

We’ve had worse days….but not many

start of the season vs BG. Ranked, everyone is excited about the program: we lose

rutgers game: ranked, everyone is excited about the program…we lose

There is NO EXCUSE for having the 115th ranked offense put up 48 on you on your home field. And just imagine how shaky Bostic would have looked if they didnt put him in for 3 snaps last week.

Comment by matt in orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:38 pm

Try 54! I am stunned! I did not believe that a team with this much talent could get blown out on homecoming no less by a very mediocre Rutgers team.

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 6:42 pm

so back to fire wanstache…. ? lol

I can’t complain about cavanugh though… so shift it to fire bennett ?

Ok.. lets see if we can at least win 2 more games.

Comment by Snala the Panther 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

what a freaking joke. I cant even describe the bitter disappointment I feel about this team. WE SUCK. How do you let a QB throw for 370 yards on 15 complete passes for 6 td’s? How is that even possible? That is even hard to do in Madden. I cant take this anymore, please put me out of my misery.

Comment by dan 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

it seems like wanny doesn’t want to let the fans (the fair weather ones) get behind this team. anytime there is some excitement that starts to stir interest… this shit happens. 54 points to rutgers is unbelievable, and incredibly depressing.

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

Well…it’ll be easier to get a hotel for the Louisville game…

Comment by rpastir 10.25.08 @ 6:44 pm

On the TD run…our D just stood there, looking lost…this is getting worse by the minute…Stull taken out by cart, Houser limping, and i have no clue how we prepped on Defense for rutgers….

I thought 34 points would have won the game…obviously, not today!

Hail to PITT!

get shady out of there. we need his MCLs intact if we hope to win again this year.

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 10.25.08 @ 6:45 pm

I bet Schiano goes for 60…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:48 pm

again, where was Cross?

Bostick couldnt do it last year and he certainly cant do it this year.

4 straight losses to Rutgers. Wanny isnt the answer. He is a .500 coach at best/

Cavanaugh did his job with 34 points. The defensive genius wanny crapped his pants again.

Comment by pitt fan 10.25.08 @ 6:50 pm

Rutgers will be 2-2. Not 2-0 Mr. Hillgrove…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:54 pm

Rutgers played way over their heads on offense today.

I did not expect that at all…. that was worse than the Navy game last year. 54 fucking points.

Rutgers usually has trouble hitting 20 points!! We had the best ranked defense in the conference.

How the hell did this happen? Off day? We’re overrated? I don’t know. I’m pretty sure it was an off day for the defense, but THAT bad… against fucking Rutgers?!?!?!

That was just inexcusable.

And the 2nd half screwups when we were right back in the game? We were moments away from overcoming a disastrous first half when Aaron Berry just killed everything we had. That just killed me.

Then Stull got hurt, and we aren’t coming back on anybody with Bostick in there.

And the way we responded to adversity on defense was absolutely disgusting.

The Steelers could blow out the Giants by 60 tomorrow, but I’m still going to be sick over this one for a long time.

By the way, USF and Cincy lost today. There goes our chance to distance ourselves from the Big East pack a little bit.

The Big East seems to be a conference full of mediocre teams, and every time one of them gets on a roll, another crappy Big East team comes and knocks them off.

I thought we’d break the trend and rise above that. Wow, was I wrong.

We can still win the conference, but at this point that would be like winning the smartest retard contest (no offense to anyone, I have a mentally handicapped relative, but I just couldn’t think of any other way to put that).

Sorry, I’m just rambling here, but that was awfull. Just a HUGE step back after playing two great games recently.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 10.25.08 @ 6:56 pm

Rutgers was averaging 16 points per game heading into today…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 6:56 pm

right now just glad that fiasco is over….just hope Stull is ok!

Not the coaches fault. We got beat by an outstanding performance by Rutgers……..WTF, that was RUTGERS…..Somebody needs to get fired. And no more game changing punt returns by Berry. There must be another option. I just hope Stull is ok.

Comment by bombersunshine 10.25.08 @ 6:58 pm

Well, the offense showed up, the defense, not so much…. How does Shady run for over 100 AGAIN with 4 TDs and we still lose?

Comment by Dugdog 10.25.08 @ 7:06 pm

Well, heading into this year, Rutgers was supposed to have what many felt were the best QB-WR connections in Big East, with Teel, Britt, Underwood and Brown coming back. So I don’t know if this was Rutgers underachieving all year and waking up today, or Rutgers just playing way over their heads thanks to an absolute career day by Teel. Or maybe this was Schiano taking advantage of the weak spot on our defense – the defensive backfield, especially on play-action fakes.

Berry = just beyond awful. He’s not even good enough a DB to justify the mistakes he made on special teams. I’d like to think a change is made back there for the ND game…Aundre Wright, Stephens-Howling…anybody but Berry.

Decicco really needs to learn his reads a little better. I know the kid is a true soph., but wow. I like the kid a lot and I think he’s going to be a great player, but If he’s going to consistently bite on play fakes, get him out of there and let Fields play a little bit.

I think we’ll be able to rebound from this. I can’t imagine this defense playing this poorly the rest of the year. What worries me about heading into Notre Dame is that they are also capable of exploiting the defensive backs the same way Teel and Co. did today.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 7:08 pm

Other than the one ill-advised throw where Bostick was hit, resulting in an int., Bostick didn’t look too bad.

Comment by Dugdog 10.25.08 @ 7:08 pm

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 7:18 pm

Hauseer has a broken leg…out for the season.

Stull Ok, but shakey for next week.

Sorry to all Pitt fans for being so negative and disappointed but I am the king of Wanny watchers and even I was stunned by this poor performance.
I went to HS with him and followed him on his entire coaching career. The one thing I will say is that his exploits and coaching failures are inexplicable! Things seem to happen to him that never happen to another coach….and over and over etc. Was hoping that would change at Pitt.

Just so so disappointing, ugly, and unforseable!

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 7:23 pm

We tore down Pitt Stadium for this? Everytime we get a head of steam we lose a big game at Heinz. Harris and Wanny both. Do we want an intimadating home field? Obviously not.

Comment by TonyinHouston 10.25.08 @ 7:28 pm

Glad to hear Stull is OK.

That really sucks about Hauser. That kid was doing a great job this year, too. Hopefully he gets healed up and can come back next year. I’m guessing that happened on the Bostick INT because that’s when he got carried off the field.

The Hauser injury worries me because this is the one o-line position where they were really short on depth. I’m not sure if they can move C.J. Davis to center and then put Jacobsen in Davis’s spot.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 7:38 pm

Same old Pitt.

Comment by Same Old Pitt 10.25.08 @ 8:02 pm

And right on cue as if there was a script…the season begins to crumble. An embarrassing loss and two key injuries. I see why Bostick is the #2 this year, they want him to graduate as soon as possible. He looked slow, awkward, and the usually wind up throwing motion. Tino is our next QB.

Aaron Berry was horrific, I would have made him take his uniform off and walk back to the campus after his fumble. He got beat all day long.

Same old pitt. Every time I think Im out they pull me back in.

Comment by Rex 10.25.08 @ 8:57 pm

Wonder what life would have been like with Saddler back returning punts this year. Darn injury bug…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 10.25.08 @ 9:21 pm

Is there anyone out there who does not believe Pitt could go 0′ fer the remainder of the season?
ND will be very difficult, especially for a team like Pitt that makes so many mistakes and reacts so slowly (or not at all), Louisville at home is willable but tough, Cinncy is the most winnable game but at Cinncy, WVU is WVU and UConn is like Rutgers…we never seem to beat them there…

Who would’ve thunk it after last weeks Navy game??

Comment by dan 72 10.25.08 @ 9:35 pm

Dan 72,

I’m trying very, very hard not to think about that, although given the way we’ve played at home this year, maybe we need all the road games we can get. And the sad truth is that I’m only half-joking when I say that.

I’d feel a lot better if I knew we didn’t have the injuries to Hauser and Stull to deal with as well, but that’s football. Every team has injuries. UConn and Cincy are down to the third-string QBs, I think.

I didn’t expect Pitt to win every game from here on out, but I kind of expected them to win this one. As you mentioned, some of these games down the stretch are going to be tough enough to win. With this being a conference game and with Pitt’s relative standing to the rest of the conference heading in, I just expected a much more focused effort today.

Maybe this one was a bad matchup for Pitt, though. Schiano is a good coach and it looked to me like he gameplanned to exploit a weaknesses in Pitt’s defense on the deep pass. He wasted no time in attacking it, and he kept after it. It looked like it was by design right from the start. My guess is that he looked at some of the plays that Syracuse beat the Pitt DBs on, and he went right at it.

I watched some of the UConn-Cincy game today and both of those teams are sloppy. As I said, both teams are down to their third-string QB. Louisville is a decent team, but they’re not what they were in the past. They were helped out tremendously today by yet another patented South Florida Self-Destruction (14 penalties for more than 100 yards).

What bothered me today were some of the calls in Rutgers territory. The decision to kick a few FGs on fourth-and-one rather than just line up and go for it. The fake field goal. The call on third-and-one that led to Bostick’s INT (line it up and run it there, please…or at least don’t force Pat to make that throw across his body). Shades of the Bowling Green game.

Comment by Stoosh 10.25.08 @ 10:09 pm

This program is dead. Wannstedt must go.

Good luck and prayers to Bill Stull and Robb Hauser. Pity their bodies had to suffer for our retarded millionaire coach’s incompetence. Their parents should be seething.

Comment by geeman2001 10.25.08 @ 10:42 pm

Wannstedt didnt fumble the ball or blow coverage. Aaron Berry should not be allowed to dress the rest of the year – he was aweful to put it kindly.

I guess it is just time to accept that we are a mediocre team in a mediocre conference. Then to rub a little salt in the wound. Terrible Pryor hands the nit whits a win in Columbus. Now we will have to hear about that all week.

What a miserable weekend.

Comment by Rex 10.25.08 @ 11:25 pm

They should put a sign over Gate A “Abandon all hope ye who enter here”. Rutgers had two big fast receivers and virtually no running attack. Yet Wanny said before the game that Pitt really had to protect against the run first. When I heard that I thought uh-oh. Sure enough, we go single coverage, with defenders who are just a bit slower and smaller than their receivers. Throw in a few “what the …?” calls on offence (fake field goal, not pounding it on 3rd and a foot), a couple of turnovers, and we get blown out. We used 6 defensive backs almost exclusively against USF, but we can’t adjust to the obvious mismatch in the secondary after the nth time? Wannstedt looked very worried before the game – no smiles, not confident at all. He must subconsciously will a loss. The crowd was enthusiastic until mid-4th quarter.

Comment by 66Goat 10.25.08 @ 11:35 pm

Crowd was great for the first three quarters, actually. When we got the defensive stop that forced the punt, that was the loudest I’ve heard Heinz in a while. Berry’s fumble AND the TD ON THE VERY NEXT PLAY threw all that out the window. Two more key plays late: The Bostick pick was a horrible play call and decision by him to throw, and we sacked Teel on 3rd down but blantantly face masked him letting RUT keep the ball. Demoralizing. All those mistakes and we still had a good chance to win until Stull got hurt. I hoped we’d be motivated after that…it was emotional…but the opposite seemed to happen. It was dead once he was gone.

Comment by Brian 10.25.08 @ 11:56 pm

And I would have felt a lot better about it all if one TP could have not farted all over himself on that 3rd and 1 QB sneak. Go Iowa next week!

Comment by Brian 10.25.08 @ 11:57 pm

I agree with most of everyone’s points here. It was a devistating blow to the stomach and reminds us of how it feels to be high on Pitt only to be let down and kill all good will of the new Pitt fans. These games hurt most because these games draw big crowds and remind me of the feeling ND left me with last time we played them.

But Big Ben would have trouble throwing 6 touchdown passes to win this game. Our defense is the sole reason we lost this game and that can include the coaches. To say Bostick was expected to come off the bench into a shootout in the 2nd half of the 6th game of the season without throwing a single pass all year, and suddenly play his best is rediculous. He did fine for the situation and play calling he was given. Look how Stull played in his 1st game this year and he was more or less the Starter since the offseason. Give the guy a break. His throws had plenty of mustard on them compared to last year and he was responsible for keeping us in several games last year. People have very short memories. He got better as the season went and has some advantages over Stull, like Accuracy and timing. If Stull is unable to come back and play, Bostick is a capable candidate to lead the team. That being said…what happened to the Greg Cross experiment? They were going to play him when they needed to throw a rinkle in there. Then they said they never got a chance to use him in the last few games. Now we don’t see him at all. I guess his million yards a cary average are not cutting the mustard. Would a cross and McCoy combo not kept Rutgers offense off the field today if they went to that combo at times. Seems we have no consitant gameplan or direction. But the offensive execution and Bostick did nothing wrong today. Only the defense and coaching of the defense and offensive play calling were really a problem.
