not going to be easy…I say Pitt makes it close not because of the athletes because The Cuse is really bad but the Stach and his coaching staff is the 2nd worst in the Big East only to WVU

Comment by J_EUP 09.27.08 @ 12:00 pm

Anyone know if this game is available on the internet? (I can’t get espn360)

Comment by DB 09.27.08 @ 12:10 pm

So much for those improving special teams…

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 12:16 pm

Comment by Joe Pa 09.27.08 @ 12:18 pm

well like I posted earlier, PITT wasnt going to make it easy, we know one thing, Penn State blew The CUSE to shreds…

Comment by J_EUP 09.27.08 @ 12:32 pm

Wow, we are a bad football team.

We can’t stop the run against ‘cuse?! Really?!?!?!? I am shocked and furious at the same time right now.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.27.08 @ 12:33 pm

Typical Wanny coached team…no fire, mistakes on specialt teams etc. Did anyone expect anything else???

Iowa found something with Thatcher last week and the Cuse continues the pounding. He allowed himself to get sucked up and picked ont he TD.

DW - how’s that mousetrap workin for you??

Comment by dan 72 09.27.08 @ 12:35 pm

Does Stull assume all of our WR are 8 feet tall??

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 12:36 pm

Stull can’t hit a target, when he does they drop it, the defense can’t stop the run now against fucking Syracuse.

This is embarassing. Completely embarassing.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.27.08 @ 12:37 pm

Trap game?! Haha, that term only applies to GOOD teams.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.27.08 @ 12:38 pm

Well, basketball season is almost here! And it’s true, every pass this frickin kid throws is high. It’s been that way all season.

Comment by Bobby 09.27.08 @ 12:38 pm

1st down: Run up the middle 6 yards.

2nd down: Run up the middle for 0 yards.

3rd down: False start. Incomplete pass.

Punt. Rinse and repeat. It must be so hard to gameplan against that explosive Pitt offense.

Comment by Kris 09.27.08 @ 12:39 pm

Start the Greg Cross era

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 12:45 pm

It’s obvious Bill Stull can’t make certain plays and its hindering the offense.

Comment by Brian 09.27.08 @ 12:46 pm

it’s hindering… sorry.

Comment by Brian 09.27.08 @ 12:47 pm

if your are a QB and throw off your back foot, all your paases will be high! Stull’s footwork isn;’t even high school! Where is the coachting here!!!!

Comment by dan 72 09.27.08 @ 12:48 pm

This is disquesting. I can’t watch anymore. Too much talent to play like this. What a disgrace!!!

Comment by J.P. 09.27.08 @ 12:50 pm

Who got the ball first?

Comment by Brian 09.27.08 @ 12:51 pm

Bill Stull is going to get Porter or McGee carted off by the end of this game

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 12:54 pm

Cuse can run the ball. Thats about the only thing they do well. Avg 165 per game.

Comment by Jhenderson 09.27.08 @ 12:57 pm

After watching most of 3+ games, Bill Stull has shown that he isn’t accurate, doesn’t throw a tight spiral consistently, doesn’t have a strong arm, isn’t good at improvising and oh yeah, he has almost no touch on the deep ball. I can count 6 passes today that he had guys open and just missed.

Comment by matt in nyc 09.27.08 @ 12:58 pm

Lee/Brytus in ‘08

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 12:58 pm

Is Berry the worst PR in the country ? He always gets up and says damm, like he had a chance or gave himself a chance.

Comment by Jhenderson 09.27.08 @ 1:02 pm

Kinder finally looking like his pre-ACL tear self again

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 1:07 pm

Would it kill Wanny to put Cross in for the goalline sets?

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 1:11 pm

Nice drive…LaRod ran well, and O-Line played well.

Comment by Oregon_Panther 09.27.08 @ 1:13 pm

Is the defense going to stop anybody today, Brinkley, welcome to the still running club!
fire Bennett, get someone who knows hoew to attack!!

Comment by Kurt 09.27.08 @ 1:25 pm

Kurt..remember these words…

“We read and react.”

“We didn’t execute.”

“We didn’t create any turnovers.”

Hail to PITT!

Read and react small athletic Pitt D lineman are getting absolutely blown up in the middle by those 340kb Cuse poor physical specimens..

Comment by dan 72 09.27.08 @ 1:32 pm

well here we go…I mean if they lose to Syracuse I mean wow…That stupid cover two defense works never but Wanny is to scare to blitz…

Comment by J_EUP 09.27.08 @ 1:53 pm

Berry was beat but he could have at least put his hands up or jumped for the ball. Why is he always given such praise?

Comment by matt in nyc 09.27.08 @ 1:53 pm

On the bright side, I have no faith in the offense OR the defense now. Which is nice.

Comment by Kris 09.27.08 @ 1:53 pm

So, where are those people who were saying Pitt was going to win the Big East? Crickets, I imagine.

Comment by Joshua 09.27.08 @ 1:55 pm

Pretty simple formula here for today…

Long Drives + Field Goal = 2-2 (0-1)

Comment by DaveD 09.27.08 @ 2:07 pm

Conor Lee is looking good with three 40+ yd FGs.

Comment by C 09.27.08 @ 2:07 pm

The defense is driving me to alcoholism

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 2:09 pm

Finally, the pass rush shows up at an opportune time…

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 2:11 pm

BALDWIN!!!!!!!

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 2:17 pm

Impressive running and offensive line play and two clutch catches by Baldwin.

Let’s go defense.

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 2:27 pm

OK. Lets see some good kick coverage, and a pumped up D.

Comment by matt in nyc 09.27.08 @ 2:28 pm

If Stull throws one more scary ball off his back foot, I’m going to re-break his thumb.

Comment by P 09.27.08 @ 2:42 pm

Holy Hell Batman, they came back to take the lead!!! Seems like I missed a lot

Comment by Dugdog 09.27.08 @ 3:04 pm

I saw the score in the 2nd and decided to go to Home Depot and splurge to make myself feel better. Wow, they actually battled back on the road and won. Granted, it was the cuse.

Comment by Dugdog 09.27.08 @ 3:11 pm

Wow….just….wow.

Hynoski came across at full speed a the end there and destroyed thomas’s eight leg…hit his leg inside out…we’ll see if he plays again…it could just be the pain, or it could be season ending…guess we’ll find out later today… Nix, time to step up.

Comment by Stuart 09.27.08 @ 3:17 pm

Thanks, Chas. the live blog was great. really enjoyable for those of us outside the TV area.

Comment by IronmanEE68 09.27.08 @ 3:28 pm

what is the deal with joe thomas? was he able to walk off?

Comment by Kurt 09.27.08 @ 3:45 pm

Way to battle back and get the w. Shouldn’t have been such a struggle, but it worked out well.

Comment by Omar 09.27.08 @ 3:59 pm

maybe we could convince joe tiller to rethink his retirement plans. or hire purdue’s OC. great play calling as purdue goes right down the field vs. ND.

Comment by Scott 09.27.08 @ 4:00 pm

Stuart, I couldn’t have described that Thomas injury any better. No way he didn’t sustain some serious damage on that play. And Kurt, he basically had to hope off on his left foot while he had is arms around some trainers, if that visual makes any sense. In other words, like Stuart said, his right leg got blasted.

Comment by johnny 09.27.08 @ 4:05 pm

Lucas Nix will get his chance.

Comment by Omar 09.27.08 @ 4:08 pm

Lucas will be really good. I feel bad for Joe Thomas, but I don’t think there will be much of a drop off.

Comment by CRIMHEAD 09.27.08 @ 4:15 pm

still it hurts our overall depth, here is hoping Thomas is limping as a caution, as he must be playing well these past 2 weeks. It still is a long season, and Thomas probably won’t be the only lineman we lose. We are pittifully thin there.

Comment by Kurt 09.27.08 @ 4:50 pm

Pretty interesting to read these comments in a thread from start to finish. Not too much credit given toward the end.

Comment by Reed 09.27.08 @ 5:42 pm

You gotta give some credit here. Cuse got a good start going up 14-3. Many Pitt teams of old would fold and never pull the comeback. The offense was solid with ball control. Ok, touchdowns would be preferred over field goals. Just think thats 28 points vrs 12. If cuse doesn’t get that jump start we could have won more handily. The offense was good on third down, and we get some less dropped balls, and stull doesn’t throw behind his receivers, they would have been up more. The D was solid in the second half and finally started getting pressure and stepped up when really needed. Granted i don’t know why we can’t get a sack in the first half ever. They do need to clean up some of the break downs, the deep tds and that horrible tackling at the end of the half on that cuse run.

Comment by snala the panther 09.27.08 @ 6:07 pm

As I said before, if anyone is wondering “perhaps” why Cav is calling a pretty conservative game, just take a look at some of Billy Stulls throws. I know he is conservative by nature but his play calling was much different with a veteran that could sling it like Palko. I think the panthers conditioning was once again a factor. The lines were far more dominant in the second half.

Glad to see more of Baldwin, still surprised to not see any Cross.

Hey, we are 3-1 with a big game Thursday. if we can pull out a victory in Florida, next up is navy and rutgers, two winnable games.

Comment by Rex 09.27.08 @ 6:36 pm

I think we have to come to grips with the fact that this team isnt going to blow out anyone. They are going to stick to their game plan and try to control the clock. We have yet to see the big play potential. When our system is working it can be deadly - it chews clock, puts points on the board and wears down defenses. Much like the steelers under Cowher, not many blow outs but still very successful. I like the fact that our teams have pulled out tough wins that went down to the late fourth quarter. I think it will be extremely beneficial down the road. Lets face it, Pitt is notorious for playing down to its competition under harris and now under DW.

Comment by Rex 09.27.08 @ 6:44 pm

Well a win is a win, USF will show us how good or how bad we really are, I would like to personally thank Greg Robinson for trying to draw our defense offsides and not run a play on 4th down.

Stull has shown no improvement over the first 4 games, he missed open targets all day long. Oline looked pretty solid.

Pass defense needs some work, Fields got beat but it was a pick play that got hung up in, Berry looked shakey all day long.

Otherwise 3-1, anyone going to the game in Tampa thursday?

Iowa lost to Northwestern today!

Comment by Starbuck 09.27.08 @ 6:58 pm

First of all, kudos to Pitt, DW, and Cav…for a very good adjustment and comeback. My game ball goes to Conner Lee. Anyone remember when we couldn’t make a field goal up there on the flat field?

A win is a win….need to put together a whole game of intensity though!

Comment by dan 72 09.27.08 @ 7:00 pm

I did not think they would be able to come back. to many losses like this in the past. It seems as if i have become afraid to get my hopes up anymore. Went to the office at the half and listened to the game on the radio. I have to give a ton of credit to the players for not giving up. I know a win against the ‘Cuse is not great but they battled back. The offensive play calling seemed a little more aggressive, better than no change. Next week will really tell where we are. Congrats to the players!

Comment by Andrew 09.27.08 @ 7:05 pm

It’s tough to be optimistic when your hopes get dashed every time, but why not be happy when we’re winning? This team has given us enough reasons to be legitimately upset over the past several years, let’s not go looking for them ourselves after winning 3 straight. Things can be improved a lot, Bowling Green was still a dumb loss, but let’s just enjoy winning while the team is doing it.

Comment by Some guy 09.27.08 @ 8:28 pm

Another weekend full of upsets and just odd-looking situations.

Duke destroyed Virginia. Maryland upsets Clemson. Navy upset Wake Forest. Alabama is destroying Georgia. Ole Miss beats Florida in Gainesville.

Wisky gave up 20 fourth quarter points to lose to Michigan. Northwestern is 5-0. Bloom is off East Carolina’s rose…they lost 41-24 to Houston.

Cincy needed a 48-yard field goal midway through the 4th quarter and then had to hang on to beat Akron by two.

Comment by Stoosh 09.27.08 @ 9:19 pm

This was a tale of two halves for me.

I wasn’t surprised to see Syracuse come out flying because I figured this was almost a last-gasp game for them. Don’t forget, too, it was right around this time last year that they went down to Louisville and beat the Cardinals doing a lot of the same things they did today. I also wasn’t so surprised to see Pitt come out a little bit flat (that early-game atmosphere felt like they were playing the game in a mausoleum), but I was surprised that it took them as long as it did to wake up and get a sense of urgency.

I said on another board during halftime that if Pitt would’ve lost this game, it would’ve been rock bottom for the Wannstedt era.

I have to say, though, I thought the coaching staff as a whole did a nice job in the second half making some adjustments. Bennett seemed to have the LBs attacking more and it put pressure on Syracuse’s O-line to make their correct blocks. I think they held Brinkley to just 22 yards rushing in the second half.

And I have to give credit to Cavanaugh for opening things up enough to keep the Orange defense honest while still sticking to the gameplan. As it was pointed out above, as much as the gameplan drives us nuts sometimes, Syracuse’s d-line was clearly gassed in the fourth quarter and a lot of that was due to the relentless pounding of the ball up the middle (McCoy had something like 96 yards rushing in the second half).

Consequently, I think our defense works the same way. The d-line got better as the game went on, just as they did against Iowa. Romeus and Sheard were dominant in the second half. Gotta do something about the secondary.

All in all, I’m happy that they’re 3-1 heading to South Florida. I said at the beginning of the year that I’d be OK with 3-1 at this point, and I’m happy with it. Four more wins and the bowl streak is over. Five more wins and we hit what most people believe would’ve been a good year for this team - eight wins and a bowl game.

Comment by Stoosh 09.27.08 @ 9:38 pm

LET’S GO PITT, BIG GAME THIS THURSDAY! KEEP BUILDING.

Comment by Yogi Roth 09.27.08 @ 11:53 pm

a little hoops news from NBE: The NBE Basketball Report has learned from a source close to the situation that Miami-Dade Community College forward Darnell Dodson is ineligible to re-enroll at Pittsburgh due to Big East rules. In an effort to make it happen, Pitt has exhausted all possibilities, but the staff foresaw the possibility and has kept on recruiting.

Comment by Yogi Roth 09.28.08 @ 12:02 am

Love Stull’s guts, determination, lack of mistakes. All that is great. However, IMO, he really seems to lack the arm strength and accuracy to complete medium to long passes. as long as that continues, sending WRs deep in an attempt to make the defenses more honest won’t be particularly effective. Maybe he can improve in this area, maybe the WRs aren’t running good routes and getting open or maybe this is all we are going to get from Stull because it is the best he can do on the longer throws. What worrie me is that without longer completions we may not be able to win 4 more and get a bowl. And, am not sure we have anyone else to play at QB this year that can do better.

Comment by pitt1972 09.28.08 @ 8:13 am

I see So Florida’s total dismantling of NC State (41-10) as a posiitve thing USF seems to be good one week and down the nest week (last week they were very unimpressive) Not predicting a Pitt win but expect a competitive game

Comment by wild Bill 09.28.08 @ 8:18 am

When will the Rutgers game time be announced?

Comment by Mitch 09.28.08 @ 8:38 am

Anyone have an update on Joe Thomas’ leg.

Comment by Michael Buncher 09.28.08 @ 11:13 am

By rule, game times have to be announced 2 Mondays before the game. Expect it on October 13th. Of course, they’ve stretched it way till the end of the previous week before…..

Comment by Kevin 09.28.08 @ 11:46 am

This was a good win. It’s conference play. I can handle a close game with Syracuse, no matter how bad they are perceived to be. It’s bad games aginst lesser, no conference opponents that drive me crazy. I am impressed with the conditioning of the team. For the second straight game, they took over in the fourth quarter and controlled the line of scrimmage. Stull still a little inconsistent, but a definite upgrade over any QB from last season. Interesting to hear on the Post game show gab fest that if Stull went down, they would “definitely” take the redshirt off Bostick and play him. Shady took a lot of heat in the gab fest for “sitting down” after his long run. I watched a DVR of the game and he did not just “sit” down. After a long run, he tried to stop his forward momentum, turn and cut, and gravity did what gravity does!

Comment by HbgFrank 09.28.08 @ 7:37 pm

I think that was a smart move on McCoy’s part, he had 4 ‘Cuse defensemen around him and would have been absolutely leveled if he continued.

Comment by Dugdog 09.28.08 @ 9:40 pm

And it was highly amusing to see, I literally busted out laughing when I saw that

Comment by Dugdog 09.28.08 @ 9:41 pm

A wins a win. It seems like no matter what the record is Syracuse plays us alwyas tough in both sports. I think the D is getting better and better crysping Bennet’s new schems. Im still pissed about this offense. It seems like the only way Cav opens the play book up and attack with the passing game is if where down by two scores. Why doesnt he do this if where up in the third quarter? It cost us the Bowling Green game and probley being ranked around 18th/17th right now going into the USF game Thursday night. USF is no doubt a top 10 team. I dont know what will happen, but I can assure you this that offensively it will be to conservative and if you do that against any good Florida team you are going to pay for it.
