Open Thread: Iowa – Pitt

The ante got upped. Not just my daughter, but my 17-month old son and even the wife are in for this trip.

At least the weather is supposed to be nice.

This is not, despite what the Pitt players got from the coaches, a statement game. Wannstedt has lost too much good will for just this game to make it up. It would, however, be a nice start.

Odds are you won’t be reading anything new from me until very late if not Sunday.

So this game is a 9am affair for those of us on the West Coast. We’re having friends over who graduated from the University of Iowa for BREAKFAST and football. (I’ll never get accustomed to that.) I already know the waffles will be great, let’s put a respectable product on the field, too! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by maz. 09.20.08 @ 10:47 am

Finally. We put Cross in and it works, go figure.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 12:22 pm

Slept in, just woke up, turned on the tv, and wow!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 12:57 pm

What in the heck was that? Then entire offensive team was on different pages on that play!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 1:15 pm

Offense looked good at first, and it appeared with an 11-point lead, they settled for a more conservative approach. Iowa gets it to 14-10, we go three and out on the ensuing drive, and luckily Iowa misses a field goal after another nice drive down the field.

Stanzi replaced Christensen and seemed to give Iowa a bit of life. I’ll be interested to see what the defense does to adjust. Looks like Stanzi makes some bad throws when he gets rushed, so I’d like to see the defense keep the pressure on him.

Two straight draws from Coach Conservative on first and second down after Iowa missed the FG. Unreal. At least TRY to shake it up a little, Matt, for crying out loud.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 1:22 pm

Does Wanny know that Iowa has 3 TO’s left? They will stop the clock if we don’t keep getting first downs. Unbelievable.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 1:22 pm

Three straight three-and-outs on our last three offensive possessions.

Wonderful.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 1:24 pm

Panthoor…I was thinking the same exact thing. Those two draws to LSH went absolutely nowhere the entire drive took a total of thirty f’ing seconds off the clock.

Our final three drives of the second quarter netted nine plays, four yards and less than three minutes of possession time.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 1:28 pm

I just loved how they immediately stopped throwing the ball down the field as soon as they scored the second touchdown.

I’m a believer in the “throw to score, run to win” mantra, too, but it’s the second quarter, fer cryin’ out loud! Throw the damn football!

Comment by Jeff 09.20.08 @ 1:31 pm

And this week the role of Bowling Green will be played by the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 1:32 pm

Right. I also like points. What happened to playing the game to score points? … or at least to stop the other team from “hoping” to score points?

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 1:32 pm

Boring, boring, boring. Look, I don’t know sh*t about football, but common sense tells me that at some point a decent defensive team like Iowa is going to figure out what we were doing and make adjustments to prevent it from happening again. So, you would think that our offense would adjust accordingly and start DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT AS WELL. But, no, that’s not the Cavanaugh/Wanny way. If it worked once it should keep on working. For Gosh sake, mix it up!!!! Throw in the wildcat on second down, go deep on first, keep the other team guessing. Seriously, the combined experience of our entire coaching staff has to top 500 years in total. Is this really the best we can do? Where is the next Urban Meyer? And why can’t we hire him. If you’re going to suck, at least excite me. I don’t even care if we lose 41 -37. Just give me a reason to hope….

Comment by Bobby 09.20.08 @ 1:34 pm

Fans were howling for Cross.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 1:47 pm

Has Cross touched the ball since he scored?

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 1:49 pm

No

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 1:50 pm

Too bad you can’t rewind reality. I would have the players tape Wannstedt to a locker so he doesn’t call any plays during the game, but then send him off to recruit afterwards.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 1:50 pm

Looks like they got LSH and McCoy in the backfield together.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 1:50 pm

We look like midgets compared to Iowa.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 1:52 pm

The only time we truly stopped their offense was when Green was hurt.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 1:54 pm

Steve, they’re all farm boys, whatcha expect? Ha!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 1:56 pm

Bred on maize and steroids

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 1:57 pm

They need to put Cross back in there. We need to keep that defense on their toes. They do not fear Stull.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 2:02 pm

Hard to believe that our coaches are so brain dead. If they don’t play Cross, they lose.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 2:03 pm

Well great coverage, I can’t believe McKillop missed!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 2:10 pm

Bullshit, we’re faster and better than Iowa. Our coaches took our offense out of this game, plain and simple.

Missed tackles are killing the defense. And why are they missing tackles? Because they’re fucking tired from all the 3-and-outs the offense has put them through because of the conservative playcalling.

Look, another missed tackle. TOUCHDOWN FUCKING HAWKEYES!!! Fuck this bullshit.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:11 pm

I said on another board that if Wannstedt tried to beat Iowa at their own game, Pitt was going to lose this game.

As soon as we got up by 11, the conservative playbook came out, and it became another patented Matt Cavanaugh “Field Position” game.

They don’t open things up until they’re forced to do so by game circumstances – namely, being down in the second half.

What have we had? Five or six straight three-and-outs on offense?

To call that embarrassing doesn’t do it justice.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 2:12 pm

They’ve figured out the Stull 4-yard passing game and Shady up the middle for 2 yards offense.

Just like Bowling Green, Iowa made the adjustment after getting their asses kicked for a quarter. They made the adjustment and Wanny is fucking lost. This is a repeat of the Bowling Green game.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:13 pm

We need Cross and Baldwin.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:18 pm

….and they run.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 2:28 pm

Trust your strength? Then Shady answers, “how ’bout my speed?” Wanny had no answer. And will never.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 2:34 pm

Thank you to whoever dusted off the old 2007 version of Lesean McCoy.

Huge stand by the defense here after giving up that long pass when Iowa got the ball back.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 2:36 pm

Now got for another score Wanny to make a two possession game, don’t sit on a ONE POINT LEAD!!!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 2:41 pm

Chappelle (spelling) was all over his guy on that deep pass, he just slowed up for a minute. That should never have happened.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:43 pm

Ok, maybe we didn’t need Cross there….

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:44 pm

The kid needs work. I’d take .500 any day.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 2:45 pm

Woohoo! They Dirty O!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 2:46 pm

Stull just stared a hole in his WR, why don’t you telegraph it a little more… Of course, everyone in the stadium knew we’d run Shady up the middle on 1st and 2nd.

Comment by P 09.20.08 @ 2:54 pm

THROW THE FUCKING BALL DOWNFIELD WANNY!!! What the fuck?! Did you think Iowa wasn’t looking for another short pass on 3rd and short?!?!?!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 2:54 pm

Boobirds on that 2nd down play. Well-deserved.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 2:54 pm

We need 22 Brytusses

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 2:55 pm

3 man rush gets there for the sack…HUGE

Comment by P 09.20.08 @ 2:59 pm

I am so glad Mic is back!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 2:59 pm

Big time sack. Wanny, they have timeouts OK?

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 3:01 pm

Iowa throwoing it? Why don’t they use that other QB?

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 3:01 pm

Perfect Punt. Now the defense has to come through.

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 3:05 pm

D Line comes up big the last few plays

Comment by P 09.20.08 @ 3:08 pm

GAME OVER

Comment by P 09.20.08 @ 3:09 pm

Mic was a beast in the 4th!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 3:10 pm

Still way too conservative, good win though.

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 3:10 pm

Ahhh… sweet victory. And thank God because I probably would’ve murdered someone if we lost that game.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.20.08 @ 3:12 pm

Big win for us. I complained for most of the game but I will take it.

The coaches boggle my primitive mind with questionable playcalling, but not as smart as them Panthoor take. /caveman

Comment by Panthoor 09.20.08 @ 3:13 pm

ditto, Panthoor

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 3:14 pm

Pitt wins!…..not gonna have to break anything else in the house since they ended up winning…..anyone know where I can get a glass pumpkin? My wife is gonna be pissed when she finds the pieces I swept under the couch…….

Comment by bombersunshine 09.20.08 @ 3:20 pm

^ Ha!

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 3:23 pm

Wow, we all think The Stache stinks, you should see Iowa fans ripping on Ferrentz

Comment by Dugdog 09.20.08 @ 3:32 pm

Most Pitt fans would’ve been happy to be 2-1 coming out of this game; I just think the difference is that many may have expected the one loss to come today instead of to Bowling Green.

Phenomenal effort by the defense, especially through the middle two quarters when the offense couldn’t stay on the field.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that McCoy starting finding a little more running room in the fourth quarter when Cav opened things up a little.

All in all, I’ll take it. I’m not concerned about style points when we haven’t been to a bowl game in three years. We’re 2-1 with a good chance to go to Tampa in a couple of weeks with a 3-1 record.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 3:35 pm

Dugdog,

I don’t blame them. I don’t know if that offense is that limited in terms of skill position players or not, but their playcalling was very Wannstache-tic today.

Comment by Stoosh 09.20.08 @ 3:36 pm

Hey, Cross just lost another 30 yards because he has no clue what to do with the ball. WooHoo, more Cross, more Cross, more Baldwin, more Nix. Asses. Get a f%^(ing clue.

Comment by 4loveofthegame 09.20.08 @ 5:04 pm

Again, I’ll take .500 any day of the week.

Comment by steve 09.20.08 @ 5:28 pm

Somebody has to tell the coaching staff that on 3rd and 4, you should be running a play that crosses the first down marker. Every week they are throwing the ball sideways or backwards and not down the field. It is amazing that Matt Cavanaugh was a offensive coordinator in the NFL.

Wasn’t impressive but it was a win. Defense looked a little better, but Stull is extremely inconsistent. Palko on this team would be top 15. I can only hope that Bostick is learning how to throw a deep ball.

Comment by Todd Gack 09.20.08 @ 5:42 pm

Summary

McCoy

Average game but made the big play when he had to. Need to get him outside a little more. Not a guard-tackle runner.

Stull

Not a good quarterback. Interesting enough, he is exactly the QB that Cavanaugh has groomed in the past (especially at Baltimore). Not real flashy, cant win the game on his arm…
Has serious problems completing even the simpliest pass when pressured. This is why we had such a tough time against the MAC teams. They blitzed and forced him to make a decision and execute. Not his strong points.

Receiving Corps

Just plain underachieving. Not real throws to the TE today which was dissappointing. Where is Dickerson. How do you recruit MR PA and in three years never find a way to make him an effective part of your team?
Turner is not big time. Kinder is playing shallow this season. Neither has reached their potential. McGhee has great potential. Must get him the ball more

E Fields –

Finally!!!! Great to see him in there. Solid game. Definately a starter

McKillops

Hard nosed player. Enough said.

Offensive line.

Getting better but still has a lot of room to improve.

D – line

Excellent fourth Quarter. Mick Williams looked fantastic in the fourth. Game ball!

Special teams

Probably the most overlooked strength today. Coverage team was excellent. Heard a lot about Iowa’s return man. Nothing today.
Punter did excellent job with hang time. Final punt was great.

Coaching

great job with the offensive play calling in first Q. A lot of misdirection play action stuff that really worked. When they got conservative it showed. Too much guard-tackle runs in the 2nd and 3rd Q. I believe at one point they were 3 and out for 4-5 straight series. Not good. Advice to Cavanaugh – Stay away from the conservative play calling. You dont have the team for this. Use your speed. Set it up with the misdirection play action stuff. Use the TE more.

Overall a very good win. Help make the BG loss a little easier to stomach! Now dont leg an egg next week against the CUSE!

Comment by A win is a win, I guess? 09.20.08 @ 6:59 pm

Just an interesting note from after the game:

Traffic sucked a big one, and it took our student shuttle 45 minutes to get from Heinz Field to PNC Park and an hour 15 to get back to Oakland. While in standstill traffic by the ballpark, Dave Wannstedt himself got out of his car and tried to board our student bus, likely to thank us for showing up. Unfortunately, our driver wouldn’t let him on.

No lie. Wish I could end that story on a better note, but I thought it was worth sharing.

Comment by mjb 09.20.08 @ 8:22 pm

Just back from the game and many versions of Sweet Caroline….First, they won but it was really hard to watch. Ridiculously conservitive calls on O and read and react on ‘D. Only saw one blitz all day from Pitt.

My biggest concern is now at QB. My first time seeing Stull in person and I was outright shocked at his lack of mechanics. Threw off the wrong foot at leasst 7 times and 4 were batted back to him. He has worse “happy feet” when pressured than Bostick ever had.

Some very good calls by Cavvy …two QB draws caught Iowa totally flatfooted. Iowa dominated on the O side but not so much on D…they had stretches but Pitt adjusted. Shady dancing in the hole way too much and seems to have lost that quick acceleration into a hole.

Porter dropped a must catch ball in the end zone.

Murray did not play at all.

A win is a win…Hail to Pitt

Comment by dan 72 09.20.08 @ 8:31 pm

Two more positive comments….I make em when they are deserved.
1. Pitt special teams are much improved…maybe the best in 4 years

2. Only 2 penalties all day due to procedure etc.

Comment by dan 72 09.20.08 @ 8:36 pm

Traffic wasn’t helped much by PennDot deciding to do major road closures on that day, when both Pitt and the Pirates were playing at home.
