So Pitt and Coach Jamie Dixon are going to host a Coaches vs. Cancer event in Pittsburgh this year. Along with the American Cancer Society and UPMC it will be the first ever Hoops for Hope Basketball Gala on May 31 at the Petersen Events Center.

How’s that working out for the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament appearance?

Rich (Pittsburgh): Andy – Coaches vs Cancer or Legends Classic for Pitt? I am hearing conflicting reports on which tournament they will play in.

Andy Katz: Right now Pitt is being moved over to the Legends Classic in New Jersey. This isn’t done but that appears to be their spot.

That noise started last week. Looks like the organizers want to have better odds of a Duke-UCLA meeting. From a marketing standpoint I can see it. Michigan is a likely non-factor to challenge, but is a name school. Adding Rutgers is reasonably safe to get that Duke-UCLA match-up.

I don’t like it as a Pitt fan, and if the goal is supposed to be to raise money for Coaches vs. Cancer it’s a mistake overall.

Pitt is hosting it’s first gala in support of the charity. Hopes were being raised that the basketball team was going to be a participant in the Tournament. That kind of synergy would really help the Pittsburgh event. Now, Pitt is being pushed to a one-game neutral site. Not nearly the same.

EDITOR CORRECTION: My bad. The Legends Classic is a not a one-off game. It is a mini-tournament like the Coaches vs. Cancer. Thanks to Bethlehemjohn for the correction.

Still not particularly happy since it does at least present a perception of being shoved down a tier for the profile of the event.

UPDATE (4:36): Per Andy Katz’s blog today (Insider subs.):

Pitt is no longer a lock to go to the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in New York with UCLA, Duke and Michigan. The Panthers are more likely to land in the Legends Classic in Newark with Texas Tech. Five schools in the mix for the four remaining spots in the two tournaments are Pitt, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Washington State and/or Southern Illinois.

Yeah. Downgraded. Definitely downgraded.

That sucks and is stupid. Wouldn’t you rather have three top-10 teams instead of 2. I don’t care how close Rutgers is to New York. Pitt would have more fans in the seats at MSG than Rutgers will. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Omar,
I agree that Pitt would have more fans in the seats than Rutgers but for all the tickets Rutgers fans don’t buy, Duke fans will. I think regardless, MSG will be sold out for the event.

Good point.

You are wrong. Legends is the same format as Coaches vs Cancer. Pitt gets two home games and then moves to Newark for two games provided they win in Pittsburgh. This is the same tourney that WVU was in last year along with Texas, Tennessee and New Mexico State.

Big dropoff as far as national significance and RPI. That should be 4 pretty easy wins.

I agree it’s definitely a downgrade but Washington State, SIU, etc., have solid programs. The Salukis have a consistently top mid-major program, and the Huskies were a top-10 team last year. With the insanely tough Big East schedule next year, I’m happy to play some top mid-majors and lower top-majors to work on some chemistry early in the year, and get the freshmen (especially Gibbs and Robinson) some playing time.

Wash State are the Cougars. UW are the Huskies.

don’t count on robinson just yet, some academic issues remain

Will Pitt’s games be televised? If they are, then I am fine with it. I guess the Powersuits couldn’t stand to see us beat Duke again, huh?. Let’s face it guys, we are the team nobody wants to play. The Pitt Basketball team is everything people like Dick Vitale hate to write about. We could be ranked #50 in the nation and #1 teams know they have to go to war just to beat us by 5. Since we have no Junk-Food All American’s then some assholes refuse to acknowledge who we are. *shrugs*

I understand that money needs to be raised, and I am happy that people are doing this. But this sounds like a corrupt boxing match, where they try to fix the ending. If Rutgers plays in this tournament, it will be the first time ever that I cheer for The Scarlet Knights. Go!, you…ugh, red guys! ..yeah.

All in all, hey, we’re playing in a tournament. I can’t argue with that because we get to show people what we can do. A Pitt-Washington State game would be really good. Who knows, this could work out better for us anyways.

Robinson is fine. He’ll be here

apvst2- them too. thanks for the correction.

After how good we turned out when healthy last year and we have arguably the best trio in basketball coming back next year, wouldn’t you be ducking us if you were A) Douche, who got STFU last year, or B) UCLA who is rebuilding and doesn’t want to be this years Douche?

Still, we get no respect. What a fucking joke.

Comment by Stuart 05.22.08 @ 12:00 am

Stuart:

I think we could be better then both of those teams this year. Certainly Duke. But our program’s name doesn’t carry the same weight as Duke or UCLA yet.

Dokish made a big fuss about Blair’s eligibility last year. His information is terrible.

Comment by Omar 05.22.08 @ 9:40 am

I was really looking forward to making a trip for that tournament. Now I won’t even bother. This is horrible. At least we still have the BET.

Comment by freebird 05.22.08 @ 12:55 pm

Looks like we’re being punished for the Duke win. They wanted to beat on a decent team to excite their NYC fans, but not actually LOSE. That either p*ssed off their boosters or Coach Unpronouncable or scared the organizers of this tournament. Hopefully the AD leaks that so we don’t get a withered turd like Smizik ripping us for ducking a tough opponent.
